- Pokemon Competitive Singles has seen the triumphant return of many Legendaries of the past, thanks to Pokemon Home Compatibility. Despite some of the most powercreep the franchise has ever seen in Gen 9, good old Mewtwo, the original OP Legendary, remains an excellent choice in Ubers this time around thanks to its excellent stats, the signature move Psystrike to threaten key special walls, and a vast movepool with myriad coverage and utility options.
Iron Mugulis and Iron Fellow know all about it.

What helps Mewtwo *immensely* is the lack of Calyrex-SR in Gen 9 Ubers due to being banned to AG, therefore not having to compete with it for the niche of a Special-oriented Psychic attacker
that's true but arguably mewtwo's best quality is its blissey matchup (and now clodsire). while calyrex shadow hits harder, is faster and can snowball, unboosted calyrex psyshock is weaker than mewtwo psystrike. calyrex is the better mon overall but a lot of the time that extra power is excessive, and if the rest of your team is weak to blissey mewtwo is the better choice and will tear through the opponent to set up its teammates. mewtwo would even be great with calyrex to soften up the switch ins early. mewtwo is also far less predictable with a wide support movepool and superior defensive typing and bulk

Calyrex-Shadow's Psyshock is still a 2HKO, the difference with the Blissey matchup is negligible due to Heavy Duty Boots being its preferred item, so the only way chip damage is gonna happen on switch-in is if Sandstorm is active.
@@daniellejackson6543 timid calyrex with a defensive item takes 3 unboosted psyshocks to kill a bold blissey, specs mewtwo psystrike does 90%. i agree that calyrex is overall better but as i said if you need your special attacker to easily beat blissey or if you're trying to target blissey for other special attackers mewtwo is the best choice. its objectively worse but if your specific team needs what mewtwo provides then theres a valid reason to use it was the point

i still dont get why the OG legendaries have such shit abilities. they rectified this mistake gen 3 onwards since every new legendary has some signature or used to be signature abilities YET mewtwo, the original legendary, HAS FREAKING PRESSURE!

All I can say is Mr Fuji did an amazing job creating this guy. Mewtwo really is one of the most powerful pokemon of all time
Now imagine if it still had 150+ special defence like it did on release, when the Special stat was a combined special attack and special defence.
Give it Gen 1 amnesia and make it an exclusive move to mewtwo.

It is very nice that the original ultimate pokemon is still quite relevant un Ubers. Maybe not the uncontested top dog, but still viable. He never slipped down into OU, or UU, or anything like that. He maintains the legend.
tbf we are still decades of powercreep away from having it weak enough to not be banned from OU
Its interesting because when you look at the stats, Mewtwo has been power crept almost completely by Miraidon, which has better bulk, better typing, better speed, and better damage output through its ability. However, Mewtwo's movepool is still incredible and lets it do things Miraidon can't, like take on special walls or have defensive set options.
That's pretty cool. I'm glad to see Mewtwo is still a good pokemon in Ubers!

Mewtwo. the legendary pokemon, the catalyst that has sparked the very idea within the smogon council to form a tier even above OU. Ubers. This scientifically created pokemon that stem from an experiment of trying to evole Mew never fail to traumatize the gen 2 players for just how ridiculously insane its stat and movepools were.
No not even the smogon council (smogon was formed in gen 2/3), just the idea for competitive pokemon was that mewtwo was too good and no one should use it.

Yeah! Is this what is called 4MSSD, or 4 Move Slots Syndrome?? It's when a Pokémon has many great move options, and wants or needs to use more than 4 of them, but a Pokémon can only have 4 pre-selected moves at any given time!!!

Mewtwo has always been my go-to legendary, just the fact that it can learn almost anything and has such well-spread stats that it's never walled by anything is just incredible.

...Legitimately though, it is so cool to see that one of the Top 5, maybe even Top 3 Most Iconic Pokémon Ever is utterly immune to power creep and always ends up not just being able to hang with his fellow Ubers, but actually thrive in the format.
Despite everything that's changed in almost 30 years of Pokémon, Mewtwo simply keeps being Mewtwo. It brings a level of stability that my nostalgia-infested brain deeply appreciates.
None of this is true. In formats where legendary mons are legal its objectively outclassed and rarely used. It's overhwhelmed by even normal mons now with Flutter.

Psystrike: Get that ass ready
This would likely be broken as hell but I wish it had an ability that sort of does what psystrike does but for all of its moves. All offensive moves hit the opponent on their weaker defense stat, regardless of if the move is actually physical or special.
it would be completely centralising more than almost any mon in history, it'd be even stronger than tinted lens, adaptability, supreme overlord, and all the boosting ones like sharpness and tough claws. the reason it's broken is because it completely prevents counterplay, with one pokemon clicking one fighting type move you could ohko max spdef eviolite chansey and max defense mega aggron lmao
Honestly, if it just got something like Magic Guard or Moldbreaker, I'd be fine with lol. It fits well with it's "Wall Breaking" duties.

That's because it got introduced in gen 5 of all places for some dumb reason. I used to think it had it sience gen 3 due to FireRed and LeafGreen.
Of course, in the same generation, GF also created a slightly less powerful version (Psyshock) and handed the latter out to anything and everything it seems.

If people think Mewtwo is even anywhere near eventually being balanced in OU, they need to think for another 0.4 seconds and realize how stupid that notion is
No way is that ever happening. Having high speed and special attack while still having good bulk and one of the best move-pools in the game means it will never go anywhere near OU. I could see a lot of other ubers dropping to OU before Mewtwo would ever be considered.
They already did that with a pokemon just as absurd as Mewtwo. Back in Gen 6, they tested putting Deoxys-attack form in OU, it went about as well as you can imagine.

Also, did you not remember that the only reason your "perfect pokemon" is currently viable, is because Calyrex-Shadow, a Mon that also likes running focus sash, got banned from Ubers, and mewtwo is just there to try and fill out that spot. And mewtwo really isnt even that highly used in Gen 9 Ubers, it barely reached the top 30 in the high elo usage stats, and hatterene is more used than it.

i personally liked how mewtwo was designed in gen 1 the most. it truly felt like a reward for completing the game in full, and it was so climactic for a final boss in an rpg. now that pokemon has shifted to be competitive, though, it's lost a bit of charm

Man, I feel so nostalgic using MewTwo in Gen 4 Ubers, and always using Lightscreen/Reflect defensive set. I loved it for the sheer utility of it. Far more versatile Pokemon than people think.

Competitive player’s report, August 16, 2023. Three years. Three long years. That’s how long I have tried and failed to teambuild. First it was going well. Then setback after setback, loss after loss, made what was going to be a quick and decisive ladder into three years of hell.
I'm glad that they've mostly kept the max stats at 700 (I'm leaving out Mega-evolutions, Dynamaxes etc), where with many other "catch 'em all" series they add a new pool of creatures to make people want to upgrade their resources again. If the standard became Pokémon with Max 800, 900, 1000 it would kill the Rivalry to the end.

as much as i love that donkey kong country soundtrack, try to dig a little deeper into the nintendo soundtrack. everyone seems to use forest interlude or aquatic ambience (for obvious reasons), but i think you get my point - there are soo many other cool soundtracks that maybe fit your videos.

Team Rocket succeeded in creating an ultimate weapon I guess. Psystrike helps a ton and Unnerve is a slept on Ability for keeping an attack a 2 hit through resistance berries and pinch berries.
Mewtwo’s story in the manga is sick too, creating a genetic bond between it and the scientist who created it. Seriously read Adventures if you want a bit more mature Pokemon story.
