Rex reminds me of so many of the "cool dudes" I remember growing up in the late 80's. my friends and I riding our bicycles through the neighborhood you'd see lots of guys who look like Rex working on their cars in the driveway, a boombox playing the radio real loud, a cooler full of beers. Sometimes it'd just be one guy, sometime it'd be him and his buddies, but you'd see these guys everywhere. It's one of the strongest childhood memories I have actually. Only a lot of them had rat tails or full on mullets, and it was back when fanny packs were in style as well as super bright colored clothing and sneakers.
rex is underrated; he defended several attacks, he described what he offers in the class and its price, and he slowly built up the students' confidence as the class progressed

The "mid-American feel" is something I haven't seen captured in any other movie tbh. In most movies, even comedies, they choose someone who's at least average-looking in an extraordinary setting or extraordinary circumstances to show how silly it all is. This entire movie may as well take place in a dying mini-mall where everything was made in the 80s and 90s, which the movie acknowledges as being hilarious in and of itself.

Back in the day karate klass was twice a week........Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday.
