2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Review and Road Test in 4K

  • Hyundai's Elantra GT has always been a solid hatchback choice in the compact category. For 2018 Hyundai redesigned the plucky hatch to give shoppers a more distinctive exterior and more gadgets and gizmos inside without losing any of the classic Hyundai value and high expected reliability. The compact hatchback segment is heating up in America so as good as the new GT is, does it have what it takes to be the best? Let's find out.

    Just recently purchased a used ‘18 GT Base (with the automatic and no options). Even though it is a little weaker than the GT Sport/N-Line, I’m still enjoying it quite a lot! In my first week of driving it, I’ve been averaging 28.4 MPG in mixed city and highway driving (in the St. Louis area in both Missouri and Illinois), so I’ve managed to beat the EPA averages (a little trick to that is on the highway I use the manual mode to keep it in sixth gear even when going up hills...it helps a lot because I’ve noticed the transmission doesn’t like hill climbing all that much). Handling and ride are no issues for me, despite the torsion beam in the rear. I can still corner no problem. Great car, and I’m glad I bought it!

    I just traded in a 2013 Kia Soul for a 2018 Elantra GT. Handling is a BIG difference! Taking a curve into or onto a freeway was the biggest change AND gas mileage in the Hyundai Elantra is better than the Soul. Don't get me wrong, the Soul is a fun little car with a HUGE back seat and mine had hauled all sorts of things. The new techie items as well as the styling of the Elantra has me really liking it AND the Electric Blue color helps!

  • @simontallboy209

    I've had a Hyundai GT Sport with the DCT for almost a year now. Really happy with the car. Quite comfortable, and sporty when you want. You're right, the mileage could be better, but it's not terrible and the car looks better than the Honda and it was cheaper to purchase. I also looked at the VW GTi, but in my area it was 12000 more than my Hyundai. I run winter tires, so I will swap to a performance tire on my alloys when the factory tires need to be replaced. Also I've found there is aftermarket support emerging for this car which is nice. I would recommend the GT Sport if you're looking for a sporty hatchback that won't break the bank.

    The Civic has really made everyone have to step there game up. I hate the civics styling but love what they did for the segment. A bit of me does wonder if the Civic would do even better with Elantra like styling. I know it would be in my garage

    • @YasumotoUS
      @YasumotoUS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm with you on the styling of the Civic. There angles of the Civic hatch exterior which really work, but there are others which just stink. Color makes a big difference, for reason, as well, in how the design works. The Civic hatch sport has two other knocks: the cloth seats are modest in their support and the base radio head unit is as bare bones as it gets.
      I'd also like to bring up a more subjective matter: the Civic's uniquely styled gauge cluster. While the Elantra GT creates a highly legible user interface, Honda continues with their non-standard speedometer readouts and presentation. Why? I don't know.
      On the plus side, the Civic hatch's cargo capacity is decent, acceleration is very acceptable and visibility is decent. That fuel economy doesn't hurt, either.

    • @YasumotoUS
      @YasumotoUS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear that, Richard. I still daily a '01 Integra and relish the high-revving, naturally aspirated power plant. I feel like I need to get into a much higher price band to match the fit / feel of honda products from 15 - 20 years ago. But here we find ourselves in 2018 with price points for Civics and equivalent offerings from other makers reaching $30k.

People buy hatchbacks for utility, but very few reviewers ever show us these things. So impressed by your reviews, Alex. Much prefer your balanced analyses to those we have in Britain where reviewers are SO in hawk to the Germans. This i30 (Elantra) seems fine, but in terms of styling looks a bit blander than the previous one. A question: why are all your mpg figures in America so terrifyingly low? My Infiniti Q30 with A 1.5 dCi engine gets about 64 in real world conditions, figures I never see in American reviews. Loved your Stinger piece. Hope you go ahead and buy one.

    16:00 Direct injection create durability concerns . Additionally, with news from Hyundai and Kia that fuel-mileage claims are being downgraded , there’s a chance that some direct injection implementations aren’t as successful as marketed. If it's necessary to put a lot of money in repair , is the economy of gasoline worth the cost?

    Does anyone know on the "size" chart that Alex has at 1:46 what the * means with the four cars? Does it stand for the hatchback version? Thanks. Also, surprised by the large sunroof as most cars with a big hatch don't have it because of lost roof reinforcement (think Buick Regal, Kia Stinger, etc.) Nice review, thanks.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide

      The size of the car has very little to do with the inclusion of a panoramic roof. Perhaps you're just accustomed to the offerings (or maybe lack thereof) in the US, but globally there are numerous compact, and sub-compact (and even smaller, called "super-minis") hatchbacks with pano roofs. Speaking of "mini", that's a perfect example, with even the previous gen R56 Mini Cooper having an available pano roof

    • @Buc_Stops_Here
      @Buc_Stops_Here 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree damieg82. I never said the size of the car, I said the hatch prevents the panaramic roof due to roof structural requirements. The Buick Regal, Kia Stinger, BMW 4 series, Audi A5 series - the list goes on and on. None of those hatchbacks have a panaromic sunroof. In fact, the A5 - the sunroof does not even open - it just tilts.

It's all about stealth, for me. Not look-at-me styling or please-buy-me styling akin to its more recent competitors, ala Yonda Sivic. The Turbo version even looks comparable to the Sivic Si....

    Hyundai's biggest shortcoming is fuel economy. I have a Civic Touring sedan, and can get over 40mpg highway, quite easily. I like the way Hyundai equips their cars, especially for the cost, but I favor my Civic for getting to 60 under 7 seconds and still being able to get great fuel economy.

    • @Grantorius
      @Grantorius 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fuel economy only matters if the prices of the cars are close or fuel prices are sky high.
      When the initial purchase price is a few thousand more, it'll take 10 years to recover the difference.
      Even at DOUBLE today's fuel cost it would take over 5 years.

  • @illitero
    @illitero 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    This and the Elantra sedan both have me gripped in a near-obsessive back and forth on which to choose. Each time something makes me decide on one, something else comes along and jerks me in the other direction. Ultimately it comes down to nitpicking at minute details, but these things matter to me on something I'd be dropping $20k+ on. I find it interesting that overall it's such a struggle to decide between two similar, yet very different vehicles. If the GT model had an INFOTAINMENT delete and white accessory lighting instead of disgusting, hard to read blue, it'd be a no-brainer. If the sedan just had the aforementioned white LED lighting and ventilated seats, it'd be a no brainer. But they don't, so I must incessantly nitpick until the end of days...

      @rmwarriors16 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Richard N. Lucky the newer versions get better mpg on the freeway. My 2013 Elantra only got 34mpg the best we ever got. We drove 55 mph mostly highway with very little traffic and hills, no snow and beautiful weather. I made sure the oil and fluid levels were good and the tire pressure is to specs with cold tire pressure. The 2013 looks the best in my opinion but the mpg is terrible. It's rated up to 28 city and 38 highway mpg.

    I’m replacing a 2003 Toyota Corolla S. I’m not into cars (obviously) and just assumed the mpg specs of any 2018 compact would beat that of my 15-year-old car. I am shocked to learn as I look at the numbers that fuel economy hasn't been much of a priority for car manufacturers. Presumably they are designing for the market, and we Americans continue to be incredibly short-sighted in regard to fossil fuel consumption. ☹️

    1:15 It doesn't. It's still a regular compact hatchback in Europe as well.
    Corolla hatchback AND Corolla iM? Isn't that the same thing?
    Acutally, current Focus isn't as European as previous ones. It was designed under the "One Ford" policy with huge imput from all markets where Ford planned to sell it (including US). Overall we ended up with the least European Focus ever, widely criticized for lousy interior and very soft ride.

    Like the Elantra hatch (and Kia Forte5 counterpart), but the Kia Niro is better all round (in NA anyways). Similar price, far better mileage, practical and spacious. Just won't win any races in one. But then again, HP is really excessive in many cars compared to what one really needs.

    I have a 2015 Elantra Limited sedan, it will give me 40 mpg highway and sometimes better. I’m thinking of trading it in for the new sport sedan with the 1.6 T motor. I’m not that worried about the lower MPG but I do think the xtra HP will be nice.

    9:10 Hope the shiny piano black dash trim fad goes out of style soon. It's horrible. Creates glare, looks cheap, and shows dust easily. Don't know who started it, but a lot of car makers, even high end ones, are using it.

    Nice video. What a filthy car. Definitely needs a good detailing especially the engine bay.

    Hyundai seems to be spending a bit too much time with their lux brands and Kia. They should balance between those and their more popular makes, like the Elantra. I get better MPG from a 2014 Altima.

    I'd still take this car over a Toyota or Honda..simple for not having a CVT transmission. CVT's have a mixed reliability...Hyundai got it right for not jumping onto the CVT bandwagon like all the other manufacturers. Even some Toyotas were recalled because of faulty CVTs.

    WHY are car companies obsessed with the incorrect way of manual shifting. *sighs*
