welcome to the Dragonball universe, so glad you actually started off with the OG!, i may cop flak for this but imo watch them in release order, DB, DBZ (also most DB and DBZ movies after DBZ), GT(GT has a movie that is actually in continuity with it, something very rare for the franchise), Super (you could power watch super by watching the movies instead of the first season, but some things just don't line up because different things happened but the movies are great too), Daima. GT gets too much hate but it is goated, ffs SSJ4 Gogeta is awesome as but the whole story of GT is great imo!
never trust a "fan" that treats the ogdb as a prequel instead of THE ACTUAL FUCKING START of the series. They will never understand the sheer goodness of seeing piccolo and goku team up for the first time.
@@HowdyJ.Marston yeah exactly, so many people reacting on youtube start with DBZ then go to SUPER (!?) Then go to OG... doesnt make any sense. Its like watching star wars prequels first, then sequels and then the OT at the end...
I love when TH-cam recommends to me channels that have so little subs but the amount of work put in is so encouraging. You’re going to blow up soon if you keep up with this level of quality.
Skywardwing started yt a long time ago growing his following off of gaming and speculation vids mainly about a very popular game called kingdom hearts. I stopped watching after he left his main yt back in 2019 so ion know what he’s been up to frfr. I just pop in here and there
0:52 NEVER, and i mean NEVER start dragon ball with DBZA. (like some fans actually do) It can and most likely WILL ruin your perception of Goku, Piccolo, Gohan, not so much Vegeta etc. etc.
I love those perceptions even if i grew up with dbz. Some are accurately exaggerated. Example: goku is not that dumb but he is originally like that if you grew up with a dub that is not changing the entirety of the script (english dub.)
I never watched it because everyone I met who has watched it has never seen the original. I've seen a few clips, but I was never a huge fan of parodys of specific media. I prefer parodys of tropes, like "Scary Movie", the anime episode of "Southpark", or "Black Dynamite".
@@damienjohnson3450 I was an og fan of dragonball since it aired on tv, and re-watched it multiple times after that, abridged really is quality, especially season 2 (namek arc), maybe it's not your style, but you should definitely watch a few episodes just to make sure.
Here in Mexico we got Dragon Ball from the very beginning, with the original score and no censorship. There is something different about watching a character grow, physically and metaphorically as you accompany him on his journey. That's why Goku and DB are so beloved here. It's like someone you know since he was a child. And yeah, it starts as a very charming comedy/adventure show. Akira Toriyama is a gag manga artist at heart, so expect lots of gags and jokes. The show becomes progressively more serious as story arcs start to pile up, but not in a jarring way, it is all smooth and sweet how the stakes get bigger and bigger every time. Hope you enjoy your journey, the best is yet to come.
It's mostly criminally underrated because of the air dates in the US. In the states, we didn't get a proper release of Dragon Ball until 2001, five years after Z had already started airing state-side. Because of that, a ton of folks who watched Z growing up in the 90's had already moved on from the franchise by the time OG Dragon Ball was airing, or simply couldn't get into the more lighthearted and comedic Dragon Ball after the (relatively speaking) more adult and serious Z. If it's initial dub in 1990, and the subsequent dub attempt in 1995, had found more success instead of both getting canned, Dragon Ball might be more highly rated than Z by the general audience. It also doesn't help that the Subbed version aired at 6am on Tuesdays in the US, a horrible timeslot for audience retention (and let's be honest, anime fans in the 90's were criminally underrating subbed anime).
@ Yeah. I was a fan of Dbz first. Didn’t know what anime was. Never heard there was a dragonball that came first. I found out many years later, watched it, watched it again, again, again, and original DB became my favorite. And it wasn’t long ago that I read about it actually having attempts at a dub before Z. I always heard DB didn’t air at all in the US before Dbz. To this day I’ve only seen DB on the internet. Never TV
@@yozarian86 I love, love, love Dragon Ball, and I can't help but feel it was done dirty by broadcasters. I've also only ever watched it through streaming online, and never saw it broadcast when I was growing up. It should have had a proper after-school timeslot the way DBZ eventually did, but it had the misfortune of coming out at a time before anime hit its big surge of popularity in the US. I'd love for Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z to get a modern day remake/remaster that has wide-scale distribution to go alongside Daima, but I know that's a pipe dream. Hell, TV networks are collapsing in on themselves, and animation in particular is being hit especially hard (just look at what happened to Cartoon Network). Enshittification seems to be ruining a lot these days.
@ Streaming services are seriously turning people off, so I wonder if TV will get to make a comeback. DBZ has some things better, but when you add it all up, I think original DB is the best in the franchise
I actually started READING DragonBall 2 weeks ago. And it's such a BLAST I'm already at Namek arc and I just can't stop won't stop. Happy to see fellow newcomer
I checked out Dragon Ball when I was in college. Super was on the horizon to release and, like you, I had only really gotten to know this franchise through cultural osmosis. So I decided to finally try it, and watch episodes between classes or on lunch periods. The shock and awe that went through me with Dragon Ball was incredible. Like you, I finally Understood it. At least, kinda? Cause all anyone talked about was Z. But this was the start of the story. Z was gonna be greater, yeah? For me at least, yes and no. I've witnessed the great moments, have laughed and cried through Z. But seldom did it ever give me the joy OG DB did. It's just... Incredible. Now whenever I see young Goku, I smile. When I think of Goku, I think of that silly monkey boy. Happy to see you checking it out now, can't wait for more of your thoughts on various social media
Yeah, thing most people do not realize is that Z... had way worse writting. The problem is that Toriyama always was a gag(comedy) mangaka, not an battle-action mangaka. Toriyama writting was at his best when he was writting gags or adventures, while it was at his worst when he was writting increasingly threats and fights with flight and beams. His writting was very good in the first part of the manga which correspond to OG Dragon Ball and was kind of a constant mess in the second half that corresponds to Z. People usually overvalue Z because in some parts of the world Z was aired before the OG dragonball, so they got their initial taste of dragonball trough Z and only watched OG Dragonball much later, so Z has nostalgia tinted glasses for them. I watched the whole show from OG to GT when I was a pree-teen and I noticed the sharp decline in quality in Z. As you said, it had its very hype moments but... the story were a mess, the fights were rather boring except some peaks and it was very confusing at times. The Android-Cell saga is the major example of this. That shit had 0 direction with Villains changing again and again.
@@diablo.the.cheater Nah, you are definitely undervaluing Z. I also love Dragonball the most as well, but Z brings a seriousness to the series that was definitely a huge part of Dragonball's continuing success. And while Toriyama did write everything (including og Dragonball) by the seat of his pants, that only makes it more impressive if you ask me, and gives the series a level of unpredictability that keeps you going. And another part of the charm of overall dragonball is getting to see the cast grow up, and into Z, have children that expand their martial arts family. And seriously, Vegeta has better character development than any other character in the series, including OG dragonball. The build up throught he saiyan arc to frieza vs goku, and Gohan's rise to prominence in the cell arc are both amazing parts of the series. All in all, there are a number of aspects that Z brings to the table that really enhanced the series as a whole. But definitely OG Dragonball, and Kid Goku, are the core of the series at its purest.
People think Z starts with Raditz but it really starts with Demon King Piccolo. Thats where everything that would be Z starts. Things have actual stakes and Goku actually starts to struggle.
I mean as far as that plot structure, sure it starts with King Piccolo. But the DBZ anime starts with Raditz. In a way, DBZ is really the story of Gohan even though he ends up taking a back seat at the very end. There is no DBZ manga. It's all just Dragon Ball in Japan. Viz Media split the manga in their English translation to match the anime because most English speakers were first introduced through DBZ
In terms of tone, action, and Saga structure; Z starts at Piccolo, sure, but I wouldn’t say that it’s Z in terms of story. Demon King Piccolo begins right after the fight against Tien, and you would be missing a bunch of context if Z starts there. Whereas the Raditz arc serves as a soft reboot to the series, with a timeskip being the main way this is shown. I can’t really see any other place in the series where the split could’ve been made without losing a bunch of context for the first Z arc.
He struggled a hell of a lot against Tenshinhan as well. Though that's in a tournament environment where he's not supposed to be killed (although it's entirely possible somebody could die by accident in a battle on that level)
Glad that you're loving Dragon Ball! If you want the know-how in terms of the series, it goes like this: -DBZ takes place right after OG, it's a timeskip -The Bardock OVA takes place before OG -The History of Trunks OVA takes place before the Cell Saga -The Tarble OVA takes place right after the Buu Saga -Daima (which just barely started) also takes place right after the Buu Saga of DBZ -DBSuper takes place after Daima, but before the End of Z (the last few episodes of DBZ) -The first two DBS sagas are retellings of the Battle of Gods and Resurrection F movies -the DBS Broly and Superhero movies take place after DBS, but before the End of Z -DBGT (which isn't canon) takes place after the End of Z, another timeskip -A Hero's Legacy takes place after GT, though the last scene of GT features those characters and takes place after the OVA -The OG and DBZ movies are non-canon, so you don't have to worry about where they fit in
also in the DBS manga, there’s two unique arcs while not animated yet, take place after the Broly Movie and before the Superhero Movie, The Moro and Granolah arcs. Both written by Toriyama and Toyotaro
@JordanGoretology Nah here are some examples Turles happens midway through Namek Slug happens when Goku is a about to fight Frieza Broly happens between the cell games Those are a few examples
Enjoy it man. This is making me want to experience the whole series again. Dragon Ball was my first anime, and I’m not embarrassed to say that is shaped a lot of who I am. Looking forward to your next video on the topic!
This got me off guard in a nice, surprising way. I was listening to other videos on auto-play while doing chores. All I heard was your voice. I'm like, Wait, Sky talking about DB and not KH? XD
I recently started watching DB again with my 6 year-old. Boy, the scene where Goku smacks the hell out of Bulma's poonanner sure prompted an awkward conversation with my wife when she walked in during it lmao.
My nephew and I just finished watching some more Dragon Ball today. We've been watching as much as we can for a while now to get him all caught up to play the games while having full context for the characters and experience the story while avoiding more spoilers than he already knows about. We're watching with Dragon Ball Recut, a fan made recut that gets rid of the filler, unnecessary padding that wasn't in the manga, and even adds the original japanese song inserts. There's also a Recut for Z Kai. We're in the middle of the second to last arc (I had only watched up to the middle of the third arc of OG DB several years ago, and grew up with Z). So far, my favorite arc has been the 22nd World Tournament. It's far less reliant on gags and more focused on great fights with great choreography and animation. And, yes, my plan is to get my nephew fully caught up so that I can then destroy him in various Dragon Ball games with no remorse. I'll also let him play Kakarot on my PS4.
Really glad to have you as a Dragon Ball enjoyer. Quick tip about watching anything while eating... Watching a screen while eating can diminish your enjoyment of the food and can promote over-eating because you are distracted and don't feel full.
My favorite DB character is Mr Satan. He's so fucking funny but is also the star of some of my favorite moments and episode in the whole franchise. That episode where he brings the dog to buu is absolute peak.
Dragon Ball is one of the most important thing in my life and has been since i was born. My brother introduced me to it when i was very little, he watched it and all of his friends did. 15 years later, me and all of my friends were watching aswell. AND THE SHOW WAS OVER FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS AT THAT POINT. My dad, my mom watched it occasionnaly with me and enjoyed it (my dad loves beerus for exemple) and most preciously my grandpa watched it both with me and my brother. (R.I.P 😢) I love watching others discover this show that is so precious to me all these years after.
Around 7:09 The comeback in the manga is even better, because Goku punches Yamcha so hard that he hits the upper part of the panel and bounces down to ground, Goku literally breaks the 4th wall with that punch so hilarious and cool
Welcome to the fandom! Loved this video. You made the right choice starting from the series humble beginnings so you can see how it grows and evolves into a phenomenon.
I just saw your video and I can totally relate to everything you’ve shared. We’re basically in the same position and have just started watching the Dragon Ball for the first time. Though I haven’t played the games let alone have friends to play with the games, but I am genuinely surprised at how random each episode can get. It has been surprise after surprise, with genuine funny scenes each episode. I am watching with subs but when I read comments from dub watchers, it makes me want to rewatch everything in dub after. -EDIT- I instantly subbed and gave a like after watching this video but I am afraid to watch more of your Dragon ball content to avoid spoilers. I am at the Red ribbon arc at the moment and might slow down in the coming days, but I’ll be sure to watch your vids when I feel like I won’t be spoiled haha
Once you get to the "Z" portion of the story, I definitely recommend watching the Kai version. Kai removes the filler and, in the case of the English dub, makes the dialogue much closer to the source material. Plus the voice acting and direction is much better in that version for the dub.
Welcome aboard the Dragon Ball ship! Can't wait to see what you think once you finish the series! My personal advice for the series is much like Kingdom Hearts, experience them in release order lol. This is how I would do it if you care to read it: So Dragon Ball into Dragon Ball Z (though I would recommend DBZ Kai, as it's just DBZ but slightly remastered with filler cut down on). Then if you feel like experiencing everything, Dragon Ball GT would be next. GT is basically considered a alternate universe, as later on when Dragon Ball Super came out, it became the "canon" continuation for DBZ. But GT does still have many cool characters and moments that people grew up with and are still used today, even if some of the story writing was kinda poor lol. I'd also say checking out all the older DBZ movies is a fun time! None of them are canon but they're just more awesome moments with the characters, and some cool, fan favorite villains came from the movies, and people popped off when they were announced for the new Sparking Zero game lol. Then after would be DB Super (the first two arcs were also released first as movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F. I'd say they're worth checking out too, honestly some parts I like way more than the series version) The thing with Super is that the anime was what came out first and ended, but the Super Manga started coming out, had a few parts that were different than the anime, and also has like, 2 or 3 more arcs than the Anime had lol. So might wanna read through Super as well, because idk if we have any word if those arcs are gonna get animated. After that are two movies that are considered canon as well. Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and then Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Then of course the newest show, Daima. It takes place between Z and Super, but I'd still wait and watch it after Super.
That's awesome to hear Sky Welcome to the Dragon Ball fanbase you're going to love it Dragon Ball is an amazing series and it gets better and better with it's Characters and story along with it's adventures and fights I'm glad you're going through OG Dragon Ball first it's my favorite part of the series besides Z~ Goku is hands down my all time favorite character in all of Dragon Ball he's just so awesome on top of that he's a good friend and father too~ If you are going all the way please keep watching OG Dragon Ball follow by Dragon Ball Z Kai than afterwards you can watch the two specials Bardock The Father Of Goku and The History Of Trunks than watch Daima Battle Of Gods Resurrection Of F Super and finally GT hope you can make more Dragon Ball videos in the Future!~
How do you only have 385 subs??? That is just criminal. You deserve a LOT more! 🧡 Edit: I dropped you a shoutout in my community post because you are very entertaining 👍 As for what to watch after Dragon Ball. You have TWO options! 1. Original Dragon Ball Z. It's just called "Dragon Ball Z" It has 291 Episodes, and contains filler! So it'll feel much like Dragon Ball. 2. Dragon Ball Z Kai. It's a more manga accurate, no filler version with superior voice acting, and writing. It has 167 Episodes. What do I recommend most? Depends on what you want. If you're the kind of person who doesn't like filler at all, and would prefer a more up to date, and more accurate to the original Manga story. Go with Kai. Me personally, I grew up on the old Dragon Ball Z. So I am always drawn to that, it's probably just nostalgia. But some of the Kai voice changes I never liked. Also DBZ with it's original American Soundtrack "Faulconer Productions" is my favourite way to watch. The music is MASTERFUL! I have a much better time enjoying the original, and I actually like filler. It's more Dragon Ball content at the end of the day, so I'm happy seeing it lol. I'll leave the decision up to you! There is no right or wrong choice. ^^
It’s so great to see that you started Dragon Ball from the actual beginning! ^^ (so many just skip it because they want to get to the iconic fights in DBZ) If I had any advice…just watch it however you want to honestly. The DBZ movies are not canon besides Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, but I still recommend watching them because a lot of them are really good and some not so good but still worth the watch just to have the experience ^^ Also I know a lot of people will say DBGT is not worth the watch, but I’d still watch it. Theres plenty of great moments in it and is definitely worth the experience despite it not being canon ^^ Also side note, there are some side OVAs that came out that aren’t counted as movies to check out if you want to plus some spin off manga that connect to the DB series in some way if you want to check those out one day.
It’s freaking awesome to see you getting into Dragon Ball Sky! Great your staring from the beginning as well, right when i was in the middle of doing a re watch of the show as well lol, still your definitely going to enjoy it, but especially og dragon ball with how charming the adventure is
You've got so much to look forward to, glad to have you along for the ride! It's rare to see or hear about someone going into dragon ball as new as you were, given that pop culture osmosis has had 40 years to do its thing, but it's always a fun journey to see people go on.
Welcome fellow new fan! I just started my Dragon Ball journey this year on March, the same month Akira Toriyama passed, something about it finally drew me in. Now I’m getting my friends into it, first by having us watch DBZ Abridged, and once we’re done I’m hoping they’ll want to see the Buu Saga that we get to the actual show! Then, show them where it all began. A little kid with a monkey tail making friends and bumbling through happily. We call the watchings Sayian Saturdays, I’m so excited to see their reactions and getting to tell them the difference from the actual show to the interpretation, and I hope for us to enjoy the actual show. I’ve gotten two figurines of my favorites, Frieza and Perfect Cell, I’m going as Future Trunks for Halloween and future conventions, I’m hoping to get a zip up hoodie with Mecha Frieza in the middle because it’d be hilarious, I listen to what ifs… It’s easy to fall in love with it the series and truly appreciate it, it’s want what I initially thought it was, I genuinely love and enjoy it and sometimes I get choked up thinking how something like this became so iconic. Saluting you on your adventure, it’s going to be a fun one!
fun fact, the term “ Brolick” if I’m even spelling that right came from Dragon Ball Z. When the Broly movie came out in the 90s, people started using that term because of Broly being so muscular to describe muscular people.
Sky is finally a dragon ball fan, haha. xD Tbh og Dragon Ball is the only thing I've never watched from Dragon Ball media, so you're giving me the urge to want to watch it too
Fun fact: Toriyama and his publisher and editor weren't entirely sure how popular Dragon Ball would be at first, so there's an alternate timeline where the panty wish was the ONLY wish ever granted by Shenron. Also, if your friends continue to say good things about Daima, you can start that right after the final saga of Z, since it takes place there and doesn't require you to have seen Super or GT.
I think re-cap videos at the end of every major arc would be great. Maybe every other if thats too short but theres a lot more to see in Dragon Ball before you get to the end of this first show.
The more consuming media ends up feeling like it's daunting or legendary, the more memorable it ends up being when you finish it. I hope to see another video on your thoughts after finishing or dropping it.
I'd recommend anyone wanting to get into Dragon Ball into reading the Manga before DBZ instead. The OG DB Anime is neat, but its pacing and amount of filler can be daunting for many, and the humor translation can be a hit or miss...and out of all sagas is the most needed of a full remake because of it. Instead, the manga is funny and doesn't waste your time as you read it at your own pace. Seriously it's the better option. Just maybe switch to the anime for the Tenkaichi Budokai sagas, but that's it.
I agree that the manga is great, but Kai fixes the majority of the pacing issues, so there are still good options for anime viewers. It's a shame OG DB never got the same treatment, but honestly the pacing was mostly fine; the bigger benefit would be a new dub.
Dude I'm so glad you're liking it! Welcome to the fam bro! Word of advice: keep it simple and enjoy! The movies don't matter if you're having a first watch for one but there are other things. Some stuff isn't even canon. Just have fun and don't let the length of the series overwhelm you. Instant sub on my part because someone is actually going through it properly. So thanks for that great vid!
People are saying that you should watch Kai instead of Z, and I agree, but not because it's shorter, but because the english script sometimes just goes wack, and ruins some moments. A lot of talking when it's supossed to be silent, and one major character defining speach, turned into superman monologuing If you want to watch Z, my opinion is you should change to subtitled, if you stay with english, you should watch kai
@@omega7057 That's my biggest reason too, but I still recommend Kai to sub watchers if they can't stomach that old school pacing. But yeah, the Z dub is not suitable for modern consumption outside of historical or nostalgic purposes lol. The Kai dub is definitely the go-to dubbed experience for newbies (and guys like me who can't do unfaithful dubs anymore).
@@OmegaRockman Best way to watch Z will always be Kai subbed, since it doesn't have messed up soundtracks and the voices and pacing are much better, but I get why people want to watch it dubbed
@@omega7057 The soundtrack issue still affects Japanese Kai on the home releases. You have to sail the seas to watch all the Yamamoto episodes, which might be a tough sell for a new viewer, and and even then Episodes 96-98 are going to have Kikuchi no matter what you do. For the dub, there is a fan restoration of the Yamamoto soundtrack for the second half of the original run. But I actually like the Kikuchi score in Kai even if the placement isn't quite as good, which is why I like having my Season sets in addition to my old Parts sets. I also like both the dub and the Japanese versions of Kai--in fact, Kai fansubs were my introduction to the Japanese cast in the show proper (I'd only heard them in the games before then). It was an awesome experience.
@@Durandd5 Well, that's why I added the caveat of if they're not able to stomach Z's pacing. As someone who's actually watched Kai from start to finish in both Japanese and English, I can say with confidence that Kai is perfectly great in Japanese. The returning cast still delivers, and I enjoy some of the new voices just as much as the originals (Unsho Ishizuka's Mr. Satan and Bin Shimada's Babidi come to mind). Sure, Z has even better performances and music placements on the whole (though Kai has some pretty great insert songs, particularly during the Namek stuff), but Z's pacing is hard to sit through for some people. It's not that I don't recommend Japanese Z at all, just that Japanese Kai is a perfectly valid alternative if Japanese Z is too slow for you.
Thank God you started with the beginning DB. So many people in the fandom refuse to actually watch the first part. Mad respect to you for starting at the beginning.
I'm from Ukraine and this series was never broadcast here, but the markets was full of bootleg merchandise with images of characters from this anime and I was always curious who they were, and only recently watched it, and I'm even glad about it because it also has adult humor.
Hey, this is awesome! Glad to see someone new taking an interest in OG Dragon Ball as a way to get into the franchise! My best advice for you watching this series: Don't watch (most of) the movies while you're watching the anime. They're all non-canon, except the most recent three (Battle of Gods, Resurrection F, and the new Broly movie). They can be super fun to watch after the franchise, but trying to fit them in to your first watch of the anime is just going to leave you confused, since they're littered with major plot contradictions (characters being alive who should be dead, for instance). The only movie worth watching for the sake of watching the anime is Dead Zone, which is best watched right after the introduction of Raditz in the anime. Just know that Dead Zone, like all the other Z movies, is non-canon. In spite of this, details from Dead Zone do come back in the anime, unless you watch Dragon Ball Z Kai (in which case, skip Dead Zone). Speaking of, that's actually another good piece of advice. Don't watch original Z, as nostalgic as it might be for most. Kai is just the better experience 9 times out of 10. Much more streamlined, better paced, way less filler material, and more consistent voice acting. Now, distinctly separate from the movies, there are two TV Specials: Bardock - The Father of Goku, and The History of Trunks. These, I actually highly recommend watching, as they were actually just special episodes of the anime that were designed to fit in to the greater series. Father of Goku is good to watch basically at any point during the Namek arc, but I believe was released around the episode where Goku first arrived on Namek. History of Trunks is best watched right after Cell announces the Cell Games. Both of these are flashback specials, and not entirely necessary for the overall story of Dragon Ball Z, but they're some of the best animated and most compelling stories in the franchise, so I can't recommend them enough. PS: Favorite Dragon Ball character? Incredibly hard to pick one, but I do really, really like Future Trunks.
I’m doing the exact same thing!! I’m about halfway through season 5 and I’m truly hooked! If it stays as good as it had been it’s an all time great show.
Super happy to hear you’re getting into this series! Ima tell you this rn before everyone else jumps on it- when u finish OG, I implore you to start Uncut Kai, not original Z People are gonna tell you about the different music scores, and certain voice actors, blah blah blah- here’s the deal: Kai is a re cut, re dubbed Z. They tried to cut out as much filler as they could and the redub is more faithful to the original manga and Japanese broadcast, and the voice acting is top notch in most cases, compared to the original. Even the dub and voice acting on OG Dragon Ball is better than Z when it started in the states, cause OG was actually translated and dubbed AFTER Z started! Crazy how that works huh? People are gonna tell you one thing, and frankly a lot of them will be coming from nostalgia. If you want a quality and authentic experience as close to the source material as possible, watch OG, then Kai (you can look up different scenes from Z if you’re curious- I won’t sit here and tell you there’s NOTHING goated in there, cause there is) then when you finish Kai you can choose to watch Final Chapters OR switch to Z for the last of the arcs. I have a suggestion but I’ll wait til u get through more of the series first, you’re in for SUCH a good time by starting from the beginning! And you’re gonna looooove these coming arcs. I don’t LOVE the next one until the very end, but from then until the end of OG it’s pretty much just straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I am *literally* on the same journey as you! I grew up watching Dragon Ball Z but just started the OG about a month ago. After a long day of work, this really is my comfort show.
Although never seeing you before I actually am so excited to see you get on this train with the rest of us. Can't wait for your later reactions to Z and possibly GT/Super!
Watching the series from the very start makes you understand the connection and impacts later on. E.g. why the impact of Krillins death by Freiza made Goku transform into SSj. Krillin and Goku went through so much together. They were rivals at first, ready to beat the crap out of each other to get on top. This struggle connected them so much and the stories they lived through together... First Krillin death (btw such a heavy episode ... ugh...) was pretty much responsible for Goku to push beyond limits, find ways and trainers to become stronger, to get revenge on King Piccolo. It was such a "great idea" to make it similar later in DBZ when Goku had no chance against Frieza but Krillins death turned it all around
This is so peak. I hope you enjoy the ride man. My one bit of advice is if you can stomach it, don't skip the filler! I find myself always craving more dragon ball and the filler definitely helped keep that feeling at bay for me.
OG Dragonball was more adventure focus with some comedy added to the mix like One Piece. Dragonball Z on the other hand was similar to Bleach, the main pros were the soundtracks, character designs and transformations. Super is kinda dull though, beautiful art style and colors, but story wise? The arcs feel like old ideas repackaged. Daima so far feels rushed, but whatever.
wow 1.2k subs, this channel deserves so much more. great video. as someone who grew up with the show, I appreciate you giving it the time and glad you got locked in :)
So glad you checked out the Dragon Ball series! I'd say my favorites are either Goku, Vegeta, Vegito or Shin!! Honestly I can't choose, but I can't wait to see you progress through the entire series!!
I started this with my wife recently. Seen most of DBZ but not much of DB. The fact that it’s a whimsical comedy hooked her. Now it’s one of our dinner shows too. We also just started DBZ simultaneously and seeing the contrast of goku and Gowan is quite funny and interesting
You also missed out on the BANGER of a song during the tournament because of the dub. They think kids can't watch something with out someone talking. So during the Goku vs Jackie Chun fight they completely cut the Tournament song and have the announcer talking over the whole fight. They also add dialogue where ever they can to characters off screen. You lose these moments of silence that really helps build the atmosphere. Like Goku just riding his cloud through the mountains.
This is crazy…. I just started dragon ball and I decided to start with the original one and I’m SO glad I did. Really let me know everything I needed to know for the rest of the series.
After you finish og db, you watch the 4 movies about it (Curse of the blood rubies, Sleeping princess in devils castle, Mystical adventure, and path to power) They aren’t really canon or important to the main story, just think of them as an alternate course of events or side story. After that you can move on to DBZ kai which is basically Z but with no filler and better voice acting.
I only started interacting with Dragon Ball, at 27. Reading Book 21/42, now. I was only on book 2 when Toriyama passed and didn’t quite get the hype. Now, it’s my new obsession. What an excellent manga and talented writer! Excited to see what comes next!
Yamcha landed Bulma and was one of Goku's first friends, not to mention seeing his wolf fang fist was awesome. Yamcha's peaked early, but man he's great lmao.
Launch in the OG Dragon ball is a hell of a character….i just love OG DB coz it is the beginning of everything, character development, and how everything works out for the development of DBZ
I'm so freaking jealous of you. Not only you watch db for the first time, but you also have friends to discuss it with. I wish I had friends as infantile as me, so they would still like db in our age
definitely need to make a series about this just reviewing dragon ball, im sure im not the only one that would love to know a newbies thoughts on certain things
I'll sub in hopes of hearing more of your thoughts as you continue to watch the series. It's really fun to hear new fans as they experience a lot of the series for the first time.
Thank god you started from the actual beginning, it is unreal how many dragon ball fans haven't seen where it all began and what led up to the events of Z
Love that you used "Brolic" as a descriptor in a Dragon Ball video. Legend has it that word originated in NYC, specifically after the DBZ movie character Broly. Calling someone "Brolic" meant you were comparing them to Broly. This word origin is disputed, but it also makes sense!
Great video, but here's some advice for the future: - Instead of Z you should watch Dragon Ball Z Kai. It gets rid of all the filler and has a better script, as well as improved voice acting. - After episode 83 of Z Kai, you should check out the "History of Trunks" special. It's a canon special that shows the backstory of an important character. - I'd say the Z movies and GT are all worth a watch, despite them being non-canon. (Don't watch Bio-Broly though. That movie kinda sucks) - After Z Kai, you should watch the canon special, "Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return!!" (Unfortunately, this one still hasn't been dubbed) - Before starting Super, you should watch the movies, "Battle of Gods" and "Resurrection F." These movies were later made into the first 2 arcs of Super, but the quality of the writing and animation were nowhere near as good. Here's a guide to watching the remaining arcs of Super without filler: - Episodes 28--41 - Episodes 47-67 - Episodes 77-131
I had no prior knowledge of Dragon Ball, except for seing the mang books in shelves at the school library as a teenager. Never been much into anime, loved Silber Fang as a kid though. But that was it. Somehow got Deagon ball chips in my youtube feed last winter, and saw one clip of Rochi where he says "My limitatuons can go to hell". That clip got me interested enough to look into Dragon ball. So I started watching it from the beginning, so DB, DBZ, GT and DBS. I finished watching the last episode of DBS today, have yet to complete the GT. Because I wanted to see the Roch scene for myself. It is AWESOME!
Really cool that you're starting from the beginning. You actually get to experience things most western fans didn't initially get to and you can see how we got to point B, where as a lot of long time fans *started* their Dragon Ball journey at point B I have to say, though, of the cast you've seen so far, I'm always torn between Krillin and Yamcha.

We are expecting the rest of your reports asap sir , good job.
welcome to the Dragonball universe, so glad you actually started off with the OG!, i may cop flak for this but imo watch them in release order, DB, DBZ (also most DB and DBZ movies after DBZ), GT(GT has a movie that is actually in continuity with it, something very rare for the franchise), Super (you could power watch super by watching the movies instead of the first season, but some things just don't line up because different things happened but the movies are great too), Daima. GT gets too much hate but it is goated, ffs SSJ4 Gogeta is awesome as but the whole story of GT is great imo!
Wow! By starting at the ACTUAL BEGINNING you have already consumed more dragon ball than a massive number of fans, congratulations!
You're god damn right he did!!
Ikr?~ I'm so proud of him! 😭

@@HowdyJ.Marston yeah exactly, so many people reacting on youtube start with DBZ then go to SUPER (!?) Then go to OG... doesnt make any sense. Its like watching star wars prequels first, then sequels and then the OT at the end...

0:52 NEVER, and i mean NEVER start dragon ball with DBZA. (like some fans actually do) It can and most likely WILL ruin your perception of Goku, Piccolo, Gohan, not so much Vegeta etc. etc.
THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING FAX
I love those perceptions even if i grew up with dbz. Some are accurately exaggerated.
Example: goku is not that dumb but he is originally like that if you grew up with a dub that is not changing the entirety of the script (english dub.)
I never watched it because everyone I met who has watched it has never seen the original. I've seen a few clips, but I was never a huge fan of parodys of specific media. I prefer parodys of tropes, like "Scary Movie", the anime episode of "Southpark", or "Black Dynamite".
@damienjohnson3450 it's like those tho.
Hope you enjoy your journey, the best is yet to come.
only the real fans know the first fight was goku vs bulma. canal 54!!!
So u got the Japanese version with Spanish dub. That's interesting
As a life long dragon ball fan just gotta say. Welcome
Also it’s Gohan great saiyanman and all
No one told you it’s a comedy because the original dragonball is criminally underrated. People don’t talk about it as much as Z and Super
Dragon Ball z has its fair share of comedy as well still.
I love Goku. He's my favorite character. And Dragon Ball is so cool, it's nice to see people getting to enjoy it too

im trying to watch dragon ball ;)
But definitely OG Dragonball, and Kid Goku, are the core of the series at its purest.
gohan reaching his potential vs perfect cell might make you shed a tear.
@@aozf05 Viz actually released these 3-in-1s that don’t have Z and OG Dragon Ball split.
The Tao pai pai arc is pretty similar to Z in structure.
He struggled a hell of a lot against Tenshinhan as well. Though that's in a tournament environment where he's not supposed to be killed (although it's entirely possible somebody could die by accident in a battle on that level)
Goku having to remind Krillin he doesn't have a nose is top tier
Glad that you're loving Dragon Ball! If you want the know-how in terms of the series, it goes like this:
-DBZ takes place right after OG, it's a timeskip
-The Bardock OVA takes place before OG
-The History of Trunks OVA takes place before the Cell Saga
-The Tarble OVA takes place right after the Buu Saga
-Daima (which just barely started) also takes place right after the Buu Saga of DBZ
-DBSuper takes place after Daima, but before the End of Z (the last few episodes of DBZ)
-The first two DBS sagas are retellings of the Battle of Gods and Resurrection F movies
-the DBS Broly and Superhero movies take place after DBS, but before the End of Z
-DBGT (which isn't canon) takes place after the End of Z, another timeskip
-A Hero's Legacy takes place after GT, though the last scene of GT features those characters and takes place after the OVA
-The OG and DBZ movies are non-canon, so you don't have to worry about where they fit in
Watch the battle of gods and resurrection of F movies instead of the dbs anime, the animation is unbearable in the anime
also in the DBS manga, there’s two unique arcs while not animated yet, take place after the Broly Movie and before the Superhero Movie, The Moro and Granolah arcs. Both written by Toriyama and Toyotaro
Bardock OVA isnt canon.
The DBZ movies are non canon but most of them do fit somewhere in the main storyline.
@JordanGoretology Nah here are some examples
Turles happens midway through Namek
Slug happens when Goku is a about to fight Frieza
Broly happens between the cell games
Those are a few examples
Enjoy it man. This is making me want to experience the whole series again. Dragon Ball was my first anime, and I’m not embarrassed to say that is shaped a lot of who I am. Looking forward to your next video on the topic!

I love watching others discover this show that is so precious to me all these years after.

Though I haven’t played the games let alone have friends to play with the games, but I am genuinely surprised at how random each episode can get. It has been surprise after surprise, with genuine funny scenes each episode. Once you get to the "Z" portion of the story, I definitely recommend watching the Kai version. Kai removes the filler and, in the case of the English dub, makes the dialogue much closer to the source material. Plus the voice acting and direction is much better in that version for the dub.
Agreed
Yeah og dbz is nostalgic, but for newer viewers kai is the move, a lot more consistent with the source material.

Welcome aboard the Dragon Ball ship! Can't wait to see what you think once you finish the series!
My personal advice for the series is much like Kingdom Hearts, experience them in release order lol. This is how I would do it if you care to read it:
So Dragon Ball into Dragon Ball Z (though I would recommend DBZ Kai, as it's just DBZ but slightly remastered with filler cut down on).
That's awesome to hear Sky Welcome to the Dragon Ball fanbase you're going to love it Dragon Ball is an amazing series and it gets better and better with it's Characters and story along with it's adventures and fights I'm glad you're going through OG Dragon Ball first it's my favorite part of the series besides Z~
Goku is hands down my all time favorite character in all of Dragon Ball he's just so awesome on top of that he's a good friend and father too~
If you are going all the way please keep watching OG Dragon Ball follow by Dragon Ball Z Kai than afterwards you can watch the two specials Bardock The Father Of Goku and The History Of Trunks than watch Daima Battle Of Gods Resurrection Of F Super and finally GT hope you can make more Dragon Ball videos in the Future!~

How do you only have 385 subs??? That is just criminal. You deserve a LOT more! 🧡
Edit: I dropped you a shoutout in my community post because you are very entertaining 👍
As for what to watch after Dragon Ball.

If I had any advice…just watch it however you want to honestly. The DBZ movies are not canon besides Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, but I still recommend watching them because a lot of them are really good and some not so good but still worth the watch just to have the experience ^^
Also I know a lot of people will say DBGT is not worth the watch, but I’d still watch it. Theres plenty of great moments in it and is definitely worth the experience despite it not being canon ^^
Also side note, there are some side OVAs that came out that aren’t counted as movies to check out if you want to plus some spin off manga that connect to the DB series in some way if you want to check those out one day.

I’ve gotten two figurines of my favorites, Frieza and Perfect Cell, I’m going as Future Trunks for Halloween and future conventions, I’m hoping to get a zip up hoodie with Mecha Frieza in the middle because it’d be hilarious, I listen to what ifs…
It’s easy to fall in love with it the series and truly appreciate it, it’s want what I initially thought it was, I genuinely love and enjoy it and sometimes I get choked up thinking how something like this became so iconic.
Saluting you on your adventure, it’s going to be a fun one!
I love to see it.
fun fact, the term “ Brolick” if I’m even spelling that right came from Dragon Ball Z. When the Broly movie came out in the 90s, people started using that term because of Broly being so muscular to describe muscular people.
Sky is finally a dragon ball fan, haha. xD
Tbh og Dragon Ball is the only thing I've never watched from Dragon Ball media, so you're giving me the urge to want to watch it too
OG Dragonball is so fun! Glad you get to experience it for the first time
Fun fact: Toriyama and his publisher and editor weren't entirely sure how popular Dragon Ball would be at first, so there's an alternate timeline where the panty wish was the ONLY wish ever granted by Shenron.
Also, if your friends continue to say good things about Daima, you can start that right after the final saga of Z, since it takes place there and doesn't require you to have seen Super or GT.
lol the panty wish was the send-off and the punch line of the whole adventure lol. Not mad at it.
The “Not Like Us” sting on the Master Roshi intro was dirty work 😂
I'd recommend anyone wanting to get into Dragon Ball into reading the Manga before DBZ instead.
A lot of talking when it's supossed to be silent, and one major character defining speach, turned into superman monologuing
If you want to watch Z, my opinion is you should change to subtitled, if you stay with english, you should watch kai
@@OmegaRockman Recommending Kai to sub watchers is crazy. Not in a million years 💀
@@Durandd5 Well, that's why I added the caveat of if they're not able to stomach Z's pacing.
My best friend skipped Dragon Ball and immediately went to DBZ lol. Glad you’re watching peak!
2:57 Launch is my favorite character. At least she’s in Dragon Ball Legends!
Super happy to hear you’re getting into this series! Ima tell you this rn before everyone else jumps on it- when u finish OG, I implore you to start Uncut Kai, not original Z
People are gonna tell you about the different music scores, and certain voice actors, blah blah blah- here’s the deal: Kai is a re cut, re dubbed Z.
I wish I could watch dragon ball for the first time again, truly a masterpiece and I wish you enjoy the journey of Goku
This is so peak. I hope you enjoy the ride man. My one bit of advice is if you can stomach it, don't skip the filler! I find myself always craving more dragon ball and the filler definitely helped keep that feeling at bay for me.
Great video and welcome to the fandom! Hope you stick with it and continue the series! Looking forward to more videos.
Subbing just to see more of your journey through this series that has touched my heart since I was a child
I love this! I hope you do a follow up video!!
So glad you checked out the Dragon Ball series! I'd say my favorites are either Goku, Vegeta, Vegito or Shin!! Honestly I can't choose, but I can't wait to see you progress through the entire series!!
Krillin meeting with his old bullies in the first world tournament was such a great moment.
I thought this video was by a multi-million TH-camr. Wow, your vid quality is incredible
TH-cam recommended something interesting im here for it
I started this with my wife recently.
I be watching a dragon ball since the 92, and still watching it over in over and can't get enough.
R.I.P Akira sensai
Yoo I’m literally so excited for you to experience some moments for the first time, I’m jealous
After you finish og db, you watch the 4 movies about it (Curse of the blood rubies, Sleeping princess in devils castle, Mystical adventure, and path to power)
They aren’t really canon or important to the main story, just think of them as an alternate course of events or side story.
Amazing video. Baffled how you got so little subs. I'm gonna follow for more dragonball, keep it up!
Dude, why do you only have 673 subs? You are very entertaining and your video editing skills are great! Keep up the good work!
Welcome to the world of Dragon Ball, Sky. We’ve been waiting for you.
You're on the right path. Enjoy it as you are and you can't go wrong.
I'm so freaking jealous of you. Not only you watch db for the first time, but you also have friends to discuss it with. I wish I had friends as infantile as me, so they would still like db in our age
subscribed just to see more of this series, keep it up!
My favorite memories are watching OG Dragonball with my dad. Its just such a lighthearted amazing joyride of an adventure
definitely need to make a series about this just reviewing dragon ball, im sure im not the only one that would love to know a newbies thoughts on certain things
My favorite Dragon Ball character? Man... Aside from the main character, its Demon King Piccolo!
I like the way you talk & edit. Subbed
Great video, but here's some advice for the future:
- Instead of Z you should watch Dragon Ball Z Kai.
That movie kinda sucks)
- After Z Kai, you should watch the canon special, "Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return!!" (Unfortunately, this one still hasn't been dubbed)
- Before starting Super, you should watch the movies, "Battle of Gods" and "Resurrection F." These movies were later made into the first 2 arcs of Super, but the quality of the writing and animation were nowhere near as good.
Here's a guide to watching the remaining arcs of Super without filler:
- Episodes 28--41
- Episodes 47-67
- Episodes 77-131
THIS!
You are in for a TREAT!! Dragon Ball is a world wide phenomenon for a GOOD REASON! I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!
Holy fuck, 200 subs? So can I say I’m an OG when you blow up? Great work man! You’ll get far in no time
Great vid! Welcome to the fandom!
Keep us posted with your thoughts. Maybe a video per every major arc.
