Korone Finally Found a Way to Talk Without Her Accent, but Then a Boss Battle Appears [Hololive]

  • Much like how Subaru can change her voice while talking on the phone, Korone also found a hack to speak without an accent.
    For those unfamiliar with Japanese, it might be difficult to hear Korone's unique accent. Essentially, her pronunciation and intonation is all over the place, and she tends to omit a lot of syllables when talking.

      The arrows are important! Japanese pays more attention to tone than English does (though, I believe, not as much as mandarin Chinese does?)
      Notice that a rising arrow follows roughly with Korone's tone rising slightly, as a falling arrow follows a falling tone, and the upright and downward-facing arrows show very high and low tones.
      If you're monolingual speaking English, it'll be really hard to pick up, but a good analogy to help you see...
      When you make a statement, at the end of your sentence typically your tone drops down. But when you ask a question? The tone of the last word rises. "The tone of the last word rises?" Pay close attention to the way you read those sentences.

    • @Blah64
      @Blah64 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ferociousfeind8538 Japanese is concerned with 'pitch accent' as opposed to tone. (I have no idea what the difference is, I've just had people explain this to me many times)

    • @baronvonbeandip
      @baronvonbeandip 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Blah64 Chinese has a 3 + 1 (unvoiced) pitch system with varying patterns between each pitch class. Japanese is a dual pitch system, high and low, and has 2 superclass variations, heiban and kifuku. Kifuku is subdivided into 3 classes, atamadaka, odaka, and nakadaka. So, as Korone talks about Haagen-Dazs, she defaults to korone pitch, which is sorta like odaka... but really... wavy. Kansai natives tend to do this inflection at the end of words, though not as wildly. Also, they do alot more atamadaka instead of heiban.
      Like, arigatou is normally nakadaka with pitch drop on 'ri' but Kansai add a high pitch on u or, even, to. Korone does similar but... with everything... like minna, hotate, and orayo.

    • @Pichuscute

      It's the pitch of each syllable that's different. English doesn't use pitch for specific words like that, but Japanese does.

      @blxckdreadful7419 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      This is probably the same case with Japan so I'm gonna use it as an example.
      In my language, there's a word called "bukas"
      Bu-kas = Tomorrow
      Buk-as = Open
      The intonation differs, and so the meaning of the word changes, if you say "bu-kas buk-as 'yon" that would translate to "tomorrow it is open"
      Korone puts stress on every syllable, in a language where intonation matters per syllable, that would totally sound weird for native speakers.

    • @wolflore7
      @wolflore7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      here is more example of it th-cam.com/video/1RKWcCyD7GI/w-d-xo.html
      Taken from the top comment in that video
      "If ppl dont really get Jp accents, english is a stressed language while Japanese is a pitched accent. Stressed languages stress sections of words for eg. ‘tomorrow’, to - MO - rrow. You’re normally supposed to stress the ‘Mo’ in tomorrow. Different accents work by stressing sections in words differently, either stronger in the case of stronger accents and opposite in the case of weaker ones. Japanese doesnt stress different sections of words but changes pitch depending on the section of the word u pronounce, in this clip, they say ノドボトケ or nodobotoke. U saw the pitch u speak the word with in the sub titles but the ‘normal’ Japanese accent is alittle different, alittle bit more flat than the accent Korone speaks with, Korone changes pitch on nearly every character she says whilst Shion speaks with the more universal Japanese accent. Tip for if u want to learn Japanese, learn to speak with a pitched accent rather than a stressed one, it should help pronunciation and annunciation and will definitely make u sound wayy more natural wen speaking. Thats often why u can notice wen a foreigner is speaking Japanese compared to an actual Japanese person, a lot of foreigners speak Japanese with a stressed accent as opposed to a pitched accent where instead of pitching sections of words they stress them and to me, it never sounds natural. Idk why i wrote a paragraph and if u read this than sorry"

      The word nai isnt really a proper exclamation, it means "not", but I hear so many japanese speakers use it as a stand in for "no" (maybe its slang) that it just slipped out from hearing it so much.

    Why does everyone seem so determined for korone not to speak with her accent?
    I don't want to exist in the timeline where korone doesn't have an accent.

    • @EmperorPylades

      I've watched almost nothing of Noel, but IIRC Okayu's native accent is a Tohoku one (after she outed herself by talking about food), which is to Japan as a Mississippi/Gulf Coast drawl is to the USA: associated with uneducated hicks. Korone's accent seems like a complete mishmash, but I'm not really that familiar with JP regional accents.

    This video and another clip was what helped me finally understand Korone's accent, great stuff. And the funny thing is that it does seem to have a bit of a parallel with the "musicality" of American southern accents. So like, "That's what I thought" with a southern drawl is more like " thay-at's (/ \) wut (_) ah (_) tha-owt (/ \)". Up and down, like Korone.

    Though most foreign people who don’t understand Japanese can’t tell, there are certain differences in how Japanese people speak depending on where they live, just like in every country. It’s easier to pick up on the more you listen to different people from different areas speak.

    I mean. Everyone has an accent, so there is no talking without an accent, it is just a different one.
    Like as an Ohioan, I don’t think of myself as having an accent, but I have a midwestern accent (think Mumei or someone like MatPat’s accent). To someone else, I have an accent.
