Kerbal Space Program - The Magic Ladder (to Eve and back)

- A kerbal on a ladder has its mass and drag ignored by the parent craft, which is obviously very powerful for mass optimization. This craft can do an Eve return in under 4 tons. Mass without kerbal and without cargo is 3996 kg; mass with cargo but without pilot is 4061 kg.
This is very similar to, but distinct from, the ladder kraken drive. The only force exerted on the lander is from propellers and engines (and air resistance). However the basic principle is similar - a kerbal cannot transfer force to a ladder, so in this mission the kerbal is effectively massless and dragless, while in a kraken drive it can push against another part and create an unbalanced force. This should be legal under the standard low mass rule set, although I wouldn't be surprised if the rules were changed afterward.
Thanks to Ultimate Steve for discovering this and showing me.

madness as always, the flag entry shield was insane
And here I was seeing the thumbnail and thinking "wow, a four-ton Eve ascent that's impressive!"
This is certainly some scraping off the optimization barrel
Telekinetic wizard goes to Eve.
Hm I’ll assume one day rocket chair to Eve and back is possible
This is incredible work! Flag heat shield was something I never even thought of!
Min/maxing the game to the most extreme degree. Incredibly impressive work.
This is absolutely insane, incredible job
Every cheeto was pulled out of the bag for this one 😂
beautifully designed
Incredible work.
Bro made a space scooter
I love KSP but I don't understand anything of what you guys are doing in these crazy videos. How you do it is also a mystery to me. Still, very entertaining to watch.
Pushing the limits beyond the limits, beyond the li... ?
GG ^^ very impressive ❤
ah yes, breaking ksp physics so hard it's basically magic or alien tech
Here before this video blows up
Incredible optimization😆
Pure insanity but good job!
all you need to go to eve is a kal controller, fuel tank and 2 smallest engines but this bullshit is pretty damn close
Wow.
NASA should hire you.
I'm already at SpaceX!
@@proxima_fishamazing
Hey what mod did you use to get that background of space in the actual game?Or is it some setting?
It's a skybox replacer called Pood's Calm Nebula, you can get it off CKAN.
@@proxima_fish Sick. Thanks!
The chuck Norris of Space 🤣🤣🤣🤣
bro hold ladder for 14+ years
Niiiiiiice!
Ok do 3 tons
holy shit bro this is insane, go work at spacex please..
Can't wait to see Elon use a flag as heatshield 😂
Wack
Wow, this might make eve and back in 80 days a bit easier for people who actually want to do it
This craft uses DLC rotors and this technique may be difficult with stock propellers
@@proxima_fish Yeah maybe
Someday the quest for less weight is gonna circle back around to the pre-1950s concepts for saving weight on rockets when specific impulse was *really* low. Stuff like combustible fuselages and cellular staging. Probably not possible to to in stock KSP but eh, not my problem.
Anyways time to revolutionize the low mass grand tour again
With this trick (just on the Eve lander) and a couple ascent optimizations that are in this video but I didn't mention, the mass goes below 7 tons. And it'll get even lower if magic ladder is used on all the other landers as well.
Very impressive, I am happy to see more KSP channels showing that the bondaries of rocket design can be pushed to the next freaking level.
It was cool that you used orbital construction as it makes ship designs even more interesting.
Also I didn't know that you could use flags as heat shields, I will surely keep that in mind for my next missions!
the silliness is mounting, improvements are counting (idk)
Deserves more than 10k views
Blud used a fin propeller
this is insane!
watched this while listening to Mozart 2x Speed Left Ear | Bible In Chinese Right Ear
why dontcha have more views and subs? Ya totally deserve more :)
actually impressive, now what if you attempt to go to eve, moho, and eeloo using this new trick?
its challenging but i have hope
good luck my fren :D
How did I never realise before that you can change MechJeb settings while paused?
This is extraordinary
That's a stairway to heaven! :)
You're a mad lad
now do it in real life😂
how
Yowza
Amazing mission!
Hello, what is the mod for the engine flames?
Waterfall by Nertea and Stock Waterfall Effects by KnightofSaintJohn
This game is broken in the best way possible
Super cool! Does the kerbal occlude the part of the rocket beneath it and negate drag on the front face?
There's no drag occlusion unfortunately
How does this compare to all previously known kraken drives?
It's not a kraken drive. I'm not getting any impulse for free, simply getting more out of the rockets that I already have.
@proxima_fish oh that's crazy, I didn't realize
2:14 smart A.S.S 💀🤦♂️
