She is an absolute grace. Every single movement she made is an enchantment in this inventive choregraphy, between playfulness and pure elegance. And as said elsewhere, the light work is gorgeous.

Mia mamma a volte mi canticchiava questa canzone, ma ricordava solo le parole Negro Zumbon e bajon. Era una canzone di quando aveva 18 anni. Se n’è andata ormai vent’anni fa, e mi piace ricordarla così

This is the very FIRST song I ever remember loving as a small child. But when the movie and Ms. Mangano were both Italian, I thought the song must be in Italian. That confused me for many years.
Now, of course, I speak both Italian and Spanish, and can certainly tell the difference. But this song probably planted the seed of my love of learning languages, so many years ago.

That's so funny. This is also the 1st song I ever loved as a child. I think I was 3. I was totally entranced by it. My parent told me about annoying them for days/weeks till they bought the record. . . I can see why. It's a gem. . . Learning Spanish right now too. . . Happy days. . .

I feel the same way as you do. I'm 81yrs. Old in May and first saw Silvana Mangano in Bitter rice a film I didn't really understand until I saw it as an adult all I remember was that I didn't like Vitorio Gazman very much. When We saw the film Anna I fell in love with the rhythm of the music and Sylvana. Nearly wore out the record. Does anybody know that she was Giada's grandmother?

Statistics will tell you about monster hits dominating the charts for months, and we often have a hard time recalling them at all. But I can tell you: In the early and mid-fifties _El Negro Zumbón_ was heard everywhere. You couldn't go to a dancing and _not_ hear it. Silvana Mangano was the star dreams were made of.

My amazement is not that Silvana had successes at a young age, yes many do that, yes many even younger. My amazement is that singlehandedly (okay with great co-stars and production teams) Silvana "flashed" the entire Italian movie industry (which was then money-losing and inward-looking) onto the international scene worldwide, via half a dozen black-and-white movies from ages 18 to 24. Each movie made a ton of money, which showed all others in the Italian movie industry that it could be done. Very directly Loren and Lollobrigida and Mastroianni and all great directors then found it easy to move forward. I believe that in an economic sense Silvana was the most important actor ever in the world. Reports of for example crowds lined up to see Bitter Rice in London and other UK cities are really astonishing. I'm glad the TH-cam community has a new recognition of her, Italy and Spain and I think Brazil have always known. :-)

There is also a film called Caro Diario where they also put this song in a scene. It makes the singer and the movies are from Italy. there will never be a movie so ingaged with the nostalgy of movie theathers and passion as in Cinema Paradiso film. i discover a way of love in movies that i never saw in any other movie.

My Mom (who just passed away a few days ago) had the original MGM 78 record of this. (& I still do) When I was about 5 years old dug into the parents' record collection & this was one song I thought weird but so catchy! One of the ones I kept playing over & over. Mom said it was Italian, & she was right in a sense-the movie was Italian, but it was sang in Spanish, as I just found out not too long ago-it didn't sound Italian to me!

A clear example of the magic in Music, eroticism in Classical Movies (I prefer this "martian" scene of Silvana Mangano to that of the famous "Gilda" and her glove, for example ...), and the joy of dancing. Definitely, a strange sequence, rare for its time, with beautiful B&W photography, and... it´s from another planet!! I love to see dancing with grace, which are not typical nor traditional like this. One of my favorite scenes of all time! I don´t get tired of watching it!! Still learning its choreography to dance the Bayón together with my wife... :-)

I love this song too. It's supposed to be Brazilian but the lyrics are in Spanish, not Portuguese. Thought someone might like an English translation (probably muy pobre but here goes):
Here comes el negro zumbon (like, "the black party guy" or merrymaker)Happily dancing the baion (Brazilian dance) Banging the zambomba (Spanish pull drum)And calling out to the all the women
Silvana's part (I know, it was really Flo Sandon): I have an urge for dancing this new beatEverybody I pass says:(chorus sings) "Hey girl, where you going?""I'm going to dance, the baion!"
That's it, rinse and repeat. Short but oh so sweet!
