And, by extension, every empire. "They were only attempting to act in their own best interest, as is their nature!". This does not hold water in the modern era. At the same time, we cannot expect people from centuries past to have anything approaching modern views on much of anything. Those who did were extremely rare. Most WW1 veterans would find modern America unrecognizable and repugnant, and that's only one century and change we're talking about.

In addition, he was missing some severe context about Wilson’s character. He said that Wilson couldn’t be blamed for the other nations not following his fourteen points, but the video didn’t mention that Wilson had a messiah complex and everyone in the negotiations hated him because he felt he was better than them. Wilson basically sabotaged his fourteen points by being the one presenting them. In addition, yes he believed the US should stay out of the war, but only so they could have the moral high ground in the aftermath.

While there's a small grain of truth to the statement that we shouldn't judge people of the past based on our values, people quickly take this way out of balance. Once that happens, it becomes easy to justify the actions of just about any person in history, no matter how heinous. The maker of the original video seems to operate by, "many people held these sympathies at the time, therefore Wilson wasn't a racist," rather than the more accurate and rational, "many people held these sympathies at the time, therefore many people were racists, including Wilson."

Excise tax on alcohol was a substantial source of revenue for the government before income tax, and prohibition would obviously snuff that out. Alcohol excise taxes made up about 25% of the federal government's revenue in 1910. Those two amendments had a lot more to do with each other than people tend to think.

I'm with you about Woodrow Wilson, and for very similar reasons.
From an accomplishment perspective, I think there are worse presidents than Woodrow Wilson. The Federal Trade Commission, the Federal Reserve, and the income tax are all important and necessary developments in American history, and his time as president was not uniquely marked by a lot of especially terrible policy.
From a character perspective, he personified why it's a good thing that the United States is designed the way it is. He is one of the presidents I would have been most afraid of if they were a dictator.

@@kaijuroar8415 The video was good. The one VTH put up of course. I get half of what Z was saying. Some of those things weren't really Wilson's fault.
But the things that most people truly find fault with in Wilson: the racism and the messiah complex aren't really something that can be washed away with "it was a sign of the times".
The video also didn't talk about 1919. In which the U.S. was in chaos in terms of Race Riots and other domestic issues, while Wilson was off in Europe. The leader of a country's duty should always be to their constituents first. Not that the reparations of WWI weren't important... but the U.S. was really in a pickle and he (Wilson) didn't do enough to address that.
Even if you say that Wilson was a president that "did the best he could at the time" and that he was a "product of the time", that doesn't explain his actions in 1919. A president of the time, could have easily had a stronger response than Wilson did.

Probably because I do agree with the first of the video. Wilson wasn't a tyrant or at fault for the taxes or the FTC. But everything after that... that's a yikes of a take to me.

Then I tried some of his videos on post-1800 subjects and I realized he knew parts of history, but was definitely was either cherry picking/intentionally ignoring things or didn't have a deep knowledge on the subjects he chose to talk about. He definitely would try to shoehorn in his own modern politics by grasping desperately at straws (like this one). This one was one of the more edgelordy ones I have seen.

No defence of Wison because he should have known, but the general public wasn't as knowledgable about the klan in the 1910s compared to now It had died off in 1870s only remembered by some of the people in the South. Only to be revived in the 1920s by this film/book.
It was so unknown that in the Sherlock holmes tale "the 5 pips", where Holes takes on the KKK, Arthur conan doyle has to explain what KKK was to his readers in the Uk and US in the 1890s, because the organization had been dead for 20 years.
Im just trying to point out that knowledge of the KKK wasnt as ubiqutous as we may assume. But the president should have known of it if he was interested in the subject.
