There's a very old SSI game called 'Combat Leader' which I played for hundreds of hours back in probably the 80s... It used a 2d top view and this feels like a 3d version of that, which is giving me real happy memory vibes. This looks like a great game as well. Just bought from Matrix Store and looking forward to playing this evening. Thanks for doing this video so I now have an idea what to do.
The thing I wanted most from Armored Brigade 2 was nice quality topo maps that made you not have to sit there and spam the shit out of the LOS tool to check angles. It kind of blows my mind when wargames don't have topographic maps... I would have honestly rather had that than fancy 3d graphics that are harder to parse quickly and severely increase system resource usage. There are already enough 3d wargames like this, I wish Armored Brigade 2 would have stuck with the elegant abstraction of the first game, it honestly gives me pause about the wisdom of the devs calling the shots here, the 3d wargaming market is already stuffed full of games that don't really know why they have 3d game engines other than it looks cool. Hey I hope the game turns out great but I am far more interested in what a team of developers could have accomplished by sticking to the 2d abstraction and leveraging the inherent possibilities of increased potential scale of battles, complexity of AI behavior and mechanical nuance that the abstraction provided.
the number one request from the community was 3D. If the devs had listened to you they'd be betraying their community's wishes. As for system resource usage, reports are that it's barely any more intensive, they use very simple textures and models. Also the first game actually was 3D. It's kinda complicated but the game maps were 3D, with 2D sprites for the units. It was necessary for some of the terrain calculations. So the only real change is that there are 3D unit and building models
@@gormros fair enough if that is what people at least thought they wanted, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was a wise game design choice *shrugs*, I don't think it was, how does it improve gameplay at the end of the day?
@@truslew8089 This has to be toggled on and off repeatedly to check height information, a nice topo map places that information onto the map so you can just look at the map and see what you need to without having to switch on another view that obscures other battlefield information. There is a very good reason topographic are the professional standard for mapping all over the world in a vast variety applications, why not have them here?
@@tylerbrown9797 Even in Graviteam Tactics Mius Front you have to spam their LOS tool or get right down to grass height to figure out why units can't see an opponent that you can, and Graviteam has the highest quality topographic maps in the genre, most taken from real operational plans, maps and geological surveys. The vision for Armored Brigade is well fleshed out, you aren't going to get everything upon this limited release yet going 3D is not only an attempt to listen to their core player base, it encompasses a broader vision to appeal and attract to the wider RTS community at large, bring in professional clients and lay the foundation for what will untimely be Armored Brigade 3. If this iteration is successful.
Lol just been reminded I was going to buy the first one, then with the delay on coming to steam, forgot all about it. Thinking this is going to be the exact same, thing.

I wont buy anything from the matrix store, I did a long time ago and they just straight up removed the game I bought and now i can't even download it.
23:14 to FINALLY see the new 3D view
A lot of the other people showcasing this almost never go down to eye level to show the 3D. So frustrating.
Tic toc, 2 days until I get my grubby hands on this

The "HGT" button in the bottom right gives you a heatmap for the height of the terrain

That font is unreadable on youtube btw
OMG, 10min in and still at the main menu.
Dudes camera angle is basically in 2D mode.
it litterally looks like just an update making it 3d. very basic graphics and quite flat terrain with almost no details.
