    This was my first gun. My grandfather gave it to me YEARS ago. I used it to teach my Wife gun safety, and she loves shooting the dinky little .22. Awesome little gun. I have some SLIGHT issues with a Failure to Eject, but I never fully jammed on me.

    I had a chance to buy one of these rifles in 1996, NIB for $75 at a gun show. I wish I'd have gotten two or three of them, because the vendor had a table lined up with them. A friend of mine bought one for his son, and as far as I know that rifle still works like a champ. Not Japanese quality like a Browning, but they're reasonably well made for the money and they work flawlessly.

    • @314299
      @314299  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine works well enough, but some folks have had less luck. They certainly are not as nice looking as the Browning guns but quite a lot cheaper for sure.

    I got my Norinco from WalMart in the 80s.
    It was a lot of fun but I quit shooting for the last 25 years or so.
    I renewed my interest in shooting a couple of years ago.
    Got the Norinco .22 out to shoot and found that the feed tube was broken away from the receiver. After some thinking and a youtube video, I decided to rethread the tube.
    It worked and the gun is running again.

    If these sell for $170, it means their manufacturing cost is likely well under $100, which is pretty astounding considering what it is.

    • @314299
      @314299  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think this was $139 back when I bought it. I think big reason these are cheap is that they are not current production but were made 20+ years ago.

    • @314299

      As the Norinco is a direct copy of the Browning I expect an SA22 firing pin would work, perhaps needing some minor fitting. Of course the only way to know 100% would be to try it.

    Hey. I just purchased on of these little 22s. It's alot smaller then I expected. Is there any upgrades you feel would be good for this 22? Also I see you have a Halifax shirt on, are you from the city?

    • @314299
      @314299  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not from Halifax, but I am from one of the maritime provinces. I cannot think of any upgrades to the rifle that I think necessary. I would however advise you to do a very good job of cleaning the action of grease, oil and possibly manufacturing debris that it will inevitably will have in it, and following that it needs to be properly lubricated. These rifles rarely work properly out of the box if not cleaned first. Best of luck with your new JW-20 .

    Nice review and display of the mechanics. What is your opinion for parts interchangeability with the browning model? Also does the steel seem to be soft or of good quality? Thanks

    • @314299
      @314299  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have a Browning on hand to try any parts interchangeability with the the Norinco, perhaps someone else can comment who has both. Being a copy I would expect some interchangeability with a bit of fitting required. The steel seems to be of good quality and does not seem soft.

    In 1988 I got to shoot a buddies Browning .22 auto. A sweet rifle for sure. Priced waaaaay outta my budget I longed to own one. NRA American Rifleman had a 1989 review of the Norinco ATD and I wanted one. Got it in 1990 for $150 and really like it. Ammo fussy, mine shot Remington Goldens and Thunderbolt fodder very reliably. Yes, the stock finish is eye catching and scroll work on receiver is a nice touch. Machine checkering looks good and overall it's a great gun. Mine doesn't have the threaded muzzle but is drilled and tapped for cantilever scope mount. Only gripe??? Drop in comb is too much for me to get my face "comfortably" down on stock. Miner carping though as it's an accurate, reliable rifle. Held up well for thirty years.

    Clearly, this is an excellent example of the old adage, you get what you pay for. The fit and finish is nowhere near what the Browning SA-22. The finish on the stocks is rough, not even in the same league as the Browning. The engraving doesn't begin to compare. And teh metal work doesn't look to be near the same quality. As he moves the action, you can hear how rough it is.
    If someone is looking for a cheap gun, this may be an option. But that's about it.

    • @314299
      @314299  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here in Canada the Japanese contractor manufactured "Browning" branded SA-22 lists for $820, which is 5.4 times the cost as much as the Norinco. It is without doubt a more nicely finished and polished rifle than the Norinco which could be purchased for about $150.00. The problem with the "Browning" branded gun is that it is a $500 gun being sold for $820. My roughly finished Norinco works well and I did not have to spend and extra $670 to have it.

    • @burnetthopkins9583
      @burnetthopkins9583 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@314299 Totally understand. It's all a matter of expectations.
      Are you looking for a gun that will shoot bullets down range? Nothing unique about the design because it has been copied from someone else. No particular beauty to the engraving, because it really doesn't even look like engraving, but more like cheap metal stamping. No particular effort for quality, other than providing a firearm at a very low price point.
      Or are you looking for a gun that has been built with fine craftsmanship? One that will make you smile every time you handle it, because you admire the precision in the checkering, the almost flawless finish on the stocks, and the beauty of the engraving on the receiver. And working the action reminds you that the gun was built with precision. One that will be desired by your children and grandchildren, and become a family heirloom for generations?
      If what one wants is a gun that will shoot, then the Norinco is a great choice. If one wants a gun that will function with precision and accuracy, then the Browning is the choice. As is often said, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It is also a reminder that imitation rarely measures up to genuine.
