    I picked up If Beale Street Could Talk based on an old video you did and you actually read thru some pages and referenced your own journey! Loving James Baldwin’s writing style! Thank you for these Rec’s.. The four agreements was the first book I read on my healing journey in 2016 and it’s one I revisit often!

    I resonate w/ you so much, it’s scary. I too wasn’t a big fan of history-based books, especially ones dealing w/ trauma we’ve dealt w/ as a people but I read a book this year on the experience of a Black navy-man during Pearl Harbor and babyyyy, i readddddd that book like it was the best thing popping and was!
    Also, I read the money version of the “badass” series and such a good mindset changer.
    I too find that fiction books are equally, if not more self-helping than self help books.
    I started using my library for finds and I’m in love . Deff see myself sitting in a library or book shop as a self date soon!

    Deacon King Kong - James McBride
    Wash Day Diaries, graphic novel - Jamila Rowser

    “Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” and “The Four Agreements” are two books that I come back to faithfully as well! They have helped shape and change the way I think pertaining to almost everything. I would recommend reading bell hooks’ all about love.” That book is definitely an eye opener by challenging how we are domesticated when it comes to the notion of love. Currently, I’m reading “Hood Feminism” by Mikki Kendall, and it is so thought-provoking yet digestible. Another book I’m reading is “The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching” by Thich Nhat Hanh. I’m really taking my time with it and using in almost like a devotional so one day I can really practice what insights the book offers.

    Ri! i love when you stated your realization in regards to self-help books and fiction books-- that was a ''mmmm" moment for me . I just got back into reading fiction books coming up on about a year and a half ( i made a deal with myself to read 12 books a year to get myself going again) and I've fallen back in love with it. So I can see the truth in how fiction books can help us heal too. Some of these books you've mentioned are already in my book queue & girl (pronouns?) i be judging my book covers too. The covers and that inside flap and a few flips through the pages will draw me in. I’ve been a subscriber and I’m not sure how often you do these vids but keep them comingggg! Lol I’ll be tuning in always. Thank you-love & light p.s.- i have a whole Google doc on books i want to read next but based on the books you reviewed, i think you’d really like Ben Okri’s ‘The Famished Road’ (it’s my version of ‘Transcendent Kingdom’) --that is if you haven’t read it already.

    I am so glad that I came to your channel. I used to read a lot, but I fell off due to life. I do agree when you said Giovanni’s Room will be with you forever. I read that book twice years ago, and I think I may read it a third time. IMO, that book is so next level. James Baldwin was truly in his own universe. On another note, I am looking forward to reading The Fraud. I read parts of it at my local bookstore, and I think I might just purchase. Btw, your locs are so beautiful. Also, have you read Chain Gang-All Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah? If so, what are your thoughts?

    Agreed, the Vanishing Half is a great read! And the one book i read this year that I still can’t stop thinking about is Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It is an interesting narrative on race from an immigrant perspective but it’s a novel 😎

      I have to add The Vanishing Half to my reading list. I've heard great things about it, but for some reason it hasn't grabbed me, at least not yet.
      I read Americanah a few years ago and I agree that it was well written and engaging. However, for me, it wasn't exactly relatable nor was it particularly memorable 🤷🏾‍♀️

      @@SharayaMW Vanishing Half I would say is worth a read but not one I’d likely pick up again. Americanah wasn’t necessarily relatable, but I did find it fascinating. Have you read Coleman Hill? Are we starting a book club on this page? 😹

      @SharayaMW 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @alaynerosales6217 This is the first time that I'm hearing about Coleman Hill, but I'll look it up on Goodreads.
      What other good books have you read in the past couple of years?

    • @alaynerosales6217
      @alaynerosales6217 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SharayaMW all black authors that I found quite unforgettable. Many with heavy trigger warnings but all in all good reads. Some are older than others- Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin, Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson, Memorial Drive: A Daughter’s Memoir by Natasha Tretheway, all of Angie Thomas (on the come up, concrete rose, the hate u give)
