Kraus was a great lyric tenor.One of the best. A great range in the higher registers and a beautiful timbre and tone. I heard him once at the Met. A very resonant voice.

Tengo entendido no se si bien,que esta opera no era de la linea de A.Kraus y aun asi la vanta extraordinariamentebien mejor que muchos que si la tienen ensu repertorio ,pero claro,siempre terminamos en lo mismo ,que solo hay un Kraus .

Alfredo Kraus è sempre stato uno dei miei tenori preferiti ma dopo aver ascoltato la sua gelida manina forse posso dire che Kraus sia stato IL più grande di sempre. Tecnica fenomenale, fraseggio impeccabile, linea di canto purissima sono peculiarità al centro delle sue interpretazioni. Grazie Maestro di averci regalato una voce così meravigliosa.
Many people have different technique, and that comes down to personal taste in sound. What is not up for debate, however, is the fact that Kraus was able to sing well, in his own unique voice, with access to his whole register including high notes, for several decades. That is only possible with healthy, consistent and SUSTAINABLE technique. Regardless of personal taste, Kraus built his instrument for the long run, and I find that in itself beautiful.

He basically didn't sing this role on stage, but did by some reports only once, and of course was musically perfection in all he did, but more Lyric roles then this where his forte, and his high notes, especially in his early years where among the best of any lyric or Leggerio tenor, he was more a Schipa then a Pavarotti, but his high notes where better then the great Schipa. I was in house in Chicago IL. for Kraus, that was in 1962 at his USA debut in opera, his "Una Furtiva " brought the house down and made him a Chicago favorite for many years .

Lo hizo una vez en Lisboa y lo grabó en disco.
El rechazó cantar varios papeles por no considerarlos adecuados para su voz, a pesar de que algunos le gustaban y habría querido hacer. Igual que alegan otros cantantes como Berganza que eran muy restrictivos en su repertorio, de haber cantado en su juventud ciertos papeles, su carrera musical podría haberse resentido por sobreexponer su voz y pasados los 50 ya ser una sombra de lo que fueron. Por suerte Kraus supo escoger los papeles para tener una larga carrera en plenitud vocal.

Yes, as Vicente points out below, this is heard by us as being one-to-1/2 tone higher than we hear recordings of today like Pavarotti, Kaufman or other artists. I do not think it is the result of the recording being sped up, because the pace is actually a bit slower than current orchestras play this in live Opera. There is a controversy that older orchestras tuned higher than we currently tune, and that may be the cause. Nonetheless, Kraus had a pure and clean voice that could really reach high notes cleanly and sustain beautifully without sounding like any kind of strain, especially up to the age of 45. He does a fabulous job of this aria and it sounds gorgeous even though marred by the movie sound track in which it is embedded. After listening to so many "dark" tenors these days (Kaufman, Villazon and others), I love the more briliant, higher, bel canto sound of Kraus.
"dark" truly means not dark, but artificially coloring, cloudy, throaty singing. Old school tenor is hard to find today.

Lástima que Alfredo no quiso cantar esta ópera, creo que la cantó alguna vez al inicio de su carrera. Él hubiera sido uno de los grandes Rodolfo, aquí está la prueba, pero bueno, gracias a que no quiso cantar verismo, se lo pudo escuchar hasta su fallecimiento con la voz intacta. Su do con la e bien puntiaguda, como la canta también Caruso, es hermoso. Otros cantantes optaban por cantar el do con una e disfrazada de a, como Franco Corelli, Pavarotti, etc. que le daba más cuerpo al do agudo, también queda lindo...

Es lo que tiene ir sobrado de voz y de técnica, en lo que otros tenores se desgañitan ,tu te puedes dedicar a construir linea de canto, musicalidad, sentimiento....a Maria Callas le pasaba igual.
Conocí a un profesor de canto que decía: canta con lo que te sobra de voz. Alfredo lo hacía.

Probably it was reajusted, originally it's a C natural. Have you noticed many classical pieces are played a semitone sharp in films?

por favor no nos rasguemos las vestiduras, si es cierto que Lanza solo realizo 2 operas y todo el mundo lo sabe escogió a Hollywood, , Kraus y Wunderlich, aun y cuando el 2do apenas empezaba su carrera a nivel internacional son 2 de los mas grandes tenores ligeros de la historia,, pero porque a muchos nos apasiona Lanza, simplemente por todo el portento, saludable fraseo, y su voz el único tenor de la historia, dentro o fuera de la opera que podía a su antojo sonar dramático y en un instante lirico puro. si no preguntémosle a Domingo o a Carreras que nunca han podido emular a Lanza en la ultima nota sobre aguda de "Be my love", y a Calleja que dijo !yo quiero cantar así" refiriéndose a la interpretación de Lanza de "A vuchella". mas respeto a este maravilloso artista y por supuesto mis respetos para el gran maestro Kraus.
Los cantantes, y más los de ópera, se evalúan en un teatro, sin amplificación y "pasando" una orquesta. Aunque Mario Lanza, en grabaciones y en el cine (que también se graba en estudio), daba la impresión de ser un gran tenor, me preguntó por qué no hizo una carrera operística. La respuesta no la se, pero no es comparable lo que se escucha en una grabación de estudio, con lo que se escucha en el teatro. Ni siquiera lo son las grabaciones pirata. Lo cierto es que nunca canto el La Scala, Ópera de Viena, Liceo, La Fenice, Covent Garden...etc. Por algo sería, pero yo no lo sé. Lo que si parece cierto es que a un cantante lírico le gusta cantar delante de un público mucho más que delante de una cámara. A mí también me "encandiló" Lanza en su día pero, cuando fui madurando me hice esta pregunta, todavía no contestada.
