    This info is so useful - thanks for providing this series on the "good oil". I recently came across online info saying that as much of 70% of oils marketed as extra virgin olive oil are fakes. After doing more research into oils available at supermarkets, there's only a handful of brands I would trust. One reliable Australian brand is Cobram Estate - this is also available in USA, and presumably in other countries.

    Thank you for this excellent information on extra Virgin olive oil. Being of Spanish decent, I grew up on olive oil and have used it all my life. I truly believe that it’s the reason why at 76 years old my health and especially my skin are in such good & healthy condition. I buy the Kirkland brand for cooking and purchase the good oil from The Olive Oil Hunter. Love your videos🥰

      HI again Jose and yoúre absolutely right! There are some incredible Australian oils and one of the advantages for people looking for the freshest oil they can buy year round is that Australia’s harvest season is the opposite six months from the Northern hemisphere (I think I might have mentioned this in the series but cańt quite recall…); Thanks for bringing this up because it’s an important point about sourcing the freshest oil you can find.

So I’m happy to hear from somebody in my old stomping grounds. I always suggest organic (that’s how we farmed our olives in California and how we do it here in Spain). So I guess I should have been clearer in the video but thanks much for asking the question and giving me the chance to point it out. Hope you enjoy learning this great way to eay every day. This is educative, thank you!!! For the past few years, I have only tried to prepare completely oil-free dishes because I received the suggestion that oils and fats are unhealthy. I am slowly trying to change to the Mediterranean lifestyle. After finding this video of yours, I realized there is a bottle of unopened olive oil in the cupboard, which unfortunately expired in April. What do you think? Can it still be used since it has not opened, or should I throw it away?

      Hi J.A. and thanks for contributing to my channel with your question. Yes. I have two suggestions. Widely available in grocery stores is the California Olive Ranch brand. It’s a quality brand and what’s in the bottle is the real thing. As editor of the Olive Oil Source years ago, I interrviewed them a few times both when they first got started and as they grew. They’re dedicated to quality and I think they deliver. As far as online sales go, you can’t do better than The Olive Oil Source, ti’s excellent for variety and authenticity and quality. And their balsamic vinegars are amazing too!

    Extra virgin olive oil can be used for deep frying.. is that what you mentioned or did I get u wrong? Is it really suitable for high heat? Kindly pls advise.. thanks.

    • @mediterraneanminutes
      @mediterraneanminutes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Guik Kim, and yes, you did hear it right. Extra virgin olive oil is a good choice for frying because the ideal temperature for frying is usually around 375 degrees farenheit and olive oil has a smoke point well above that according to many studies. You might find the third segment of this series of interest to you because I go into some detail about this exact question with back-up reference for my facts. I use extra virgin olive oil in my kitchen every day, frequently to prepare dishes on the stovetop and, as long as you don’t let the oil go beyond smoke point, it will still retain some of its healthy benefits but they do diminish as the heat increases. Hope this helps clarify things! Cheers, Caroline

    I've been buying Cento EVOO for years. I just read the bottle and it says EVOO from Spain-Greece-Italy, packed in Italy. Since this is 3 countries and "packed" in Italy is this good? Since it says "packed" I'm assuming it could be bottled in these 3 countries and then packed in Italy.

    • @mediterraneanminutes
      @mediterraneanminutes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kimberly - You bring up some really important points. First, I would hesitate to buy any oil brand (and I am familiar with that one) that doesn't define a single source. Second, you noticed an important difference on the label..."distributed or packed" means there is an extra middleman from the tree to your kitchen and it's really hard to maintain quality in this situation. The oil would arrive in bulk and be bottled in Italy most likely and lots of time and changing temperatures in transport can cause degradation. Italy has always been great at marketing so they frequently buy oil from countries that don't have as romantic an image for olive oil (a lot of it from Spain actually where 68% of the world's olive oil is grown and produced). Third, the industry is rife with fraud, bottling inferior oil and refined oils but passing them off as olive oil. So...having said all that, if you can find a local source, great. If not, buy from brands like California Olive Ranch that are single source options and don't have to travel as far, plus they are easy to find in stores. If you live in Australia, Cobram would be my choice. And if you are coming to Spain, give me a call and I'll give you a bottle of ours! Cheers, Caroline

    Maybe use fewer words. For example, upwards of 75% of "olive oil" in all three varieties are not correct. - No one to police the quality, so Marketing managers have a field day as they promote their inferior products.

    • @mediterraneanminutes
      @mediterraneanminutes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi J - You’re absolutely right about fraudulent claims in the olive oil industry, it’s rife with misleading information and fake oil problems. If you want to know more about the history of these probmes, I can point you to Tom Mueller’s book, Extra Virginity. It’s a bit old but the information is not out of date. And I couldn’t find your other comments in the area to respond so I wanted to share another good source about the Cretan diet (which is sounds like you are familiar with), “ The Mediterranean diet has been recognized for decades as a pillar of healthy living. This diet pulls from the 22 countries in the region surrounding the Mediterranean Ocean, emphasizing the consumption of olive oil, fresh fruits and vegetables, some fish, and small amounts of meat.
      The modern-day Mediterranean Diet is described as being a combination of Greek, Italian, and Spanish cuisines. The diet emerged from a the "Seven Countries Study", which was begun in the 1950s. The study was led by Ancel Keys, a physiologist from the University of Minnesota who was dedicated to learning about and combating the heart related health issues that were beginning to plague Americans. He discovered that the island of Crete, pronounced "kreet," was was the healthiest of the countries in his study, with incidences of heart disease occurring at extraordinarily low percentages among the Cretan population. The population of Crete tends to eat seasonally and locally, consuming between 9-12 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, as well plenty of olive oil. This is the only oil they use--there's no butter, no lard--and it makes up to 37% of their daily caloric intake.
      While there are aspects of his study that have earned criticism, longitudinal follow-up shows that adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in general, and the Cretan Diet in particular, has resulted in active and vital seniors. Those who adopted a more Western diet pattern saw a rise in heart disease, and other corollary diseases like dementia.” from spicesinc.com. They have much more detail so you may be interested in reviewing their data about the Seven Country Study. Cheers, Caroline
