A "bar" is a place where you go to drink a wide variety of things. A "pub" is a bar that also serves food. A "tavern" is a restaurant that happens to also have a bar. An "inn" is a place where you stay that also has a place to eat attached, which may or may not have a bar. A hotel is kind of like a big inn that may or may not have a restaurant and/or other services available.
And all that gets messy because people tend to name things whatever the hell they feel like.

A pub is a type of bar, but a bar is not always a pub. Gavin's explanation makes total sense. It's a different atmosphere, even if the product (alcohol) is the same.

Yeah, when you ask friends to hang out at the bar, it's kinda assuming going out on a night out. The pub is just chilling out in the afternoon in an old building.

James Hirst They serve different purposes. You don't try and get a girl at a pub, it's entierly for socialising. You may try and get a girl at a bar or a club though, not much socialising at a club. Bars are a mix of pub and club.

A "bar" is a bar. An "inn" is either a small hotel with a bar in it, or a bar with a small hotel attached. A "pub" is a bar with oak beams. A "tavern" is a bar with fake oak beams. A "saloon" is only found in places like Vegas or Disneyland.

    • @GabbyGoLucky

I agree! I've been on a trip to Europe before and England was one of the places I visited while there. I'd say I noticed that the pubs I went to were more like a restaurant that has a bar as well, along with them being mostly built out of wood and stone. The bars I've been to here in the US have always been more focused on the drinking aspect, and will usually offer appetizers and occasionally will offer meals too. I guess the main difference is the overall atmosphere, bars being more modern-styled and pubs being more medieval styled.

Gavin is absolutely right about bars and pubs, and I'm American. A pub is like a mini restaurant, it's about drinking AND having a full meal, while a bar is all about the alcohol. Yeah, you can get a basket of drip-cheese nachos, or a couple small, greasy sliders at a bar, but you're not going there for a full meal.
A good way to tell the difference (though this doesn't always work) is to ask does it have an age restriction? Because a bar is all about drinking and partying, they almost never let in anyone under 21 (in America). Because a pub is about drinking and eating, they will usually allow children with adult supervision, and will have a selection of soft drinks for them.

We have pubs in australia and it's exactly what gavin is saying. A bar is more of an environment purely for alcohol, a pub is sort of a hybrid of a restaurant and a bar. Kids are allowed in with their family's and (at least in australia) are actually allowed a beer or cider if they're over the age of 12, as long as it's with a meal. Most of the time when you go to the pub, you're either going specifically for a meal, or to just catch up with some friends or wind down after work, have a beer or 2. People don't really go to pubs specifically to get drunk, although some pubs will have a sports bar or something off to the side that can only be accessed by 18+ and people get pissed in there sometimes, but that's just certain places. Pubs are great, usually really warm and welcoming.

in the UK, a bar is just the bar part. In a pub, you would have seating and maybe a beer garden and a bar. Bar's are also found in a lot of restaurants or clubs. So the bar literally means just the table where they actually serve drinks, and usually, in a pub you can order food. I've never heard of a pub that doesn't have at least some kind of actual meal.

In America, there is much less difference between a pub and a bar. The two are largely interchangeable. The common understanding, I think, is that if something is called a "pub" in the U.S., it probably is meant to evoke the ambience of a UK pub- although what exactly that is depends on which "pub" you're at. However, I've been to both bars and pubs in the U.S. which served restaurant-type meals. I've only been to one pub in the UK (alright, technically, I have been *outside* of one pub in the UK). I was still a kid with my family, and it was passed local dinner time, so this particular pub had begun to limit patronage to those above drinking age. Basically, at night it turned into just a bar!

in Canada (at least in Québec), there definitely is a difference between a bar and a pub. It is similar to what Gavin is saying.
A bar is a place to drink your heart away. You can do that in a pub, but it is more of a homey place. If I wanted to go get lunch with a few friends after a class in college if we all had free time, we would walk down the street to the pub nearby and get some awesome meals and a few beers.
If there was food in a bar, I would definitely not try it.

I was always under the impression that bars and pubs are in fact different, its just that in America, they're not called pubs, they're called "bar & grills". For example, say you want to celebrate with your boys and have a night out on the town, you'd hit up one or multiple bars for some rounds before heading out somewhere else. But, if you all just want to get together to hang out, you'd all go to a bar & grill, order a meal, and have a pint or two while playing a round of pool or darts or slots while you wait for the food to come out. Problem is, a lot of these places are "disguised", if you will, as family friendly restaurants, like Applebee's or Chili's. Despite this, there are ones that fit the more conventional feel of places that are more for adults, but I've found that they are more of a local business type establishment (as to be expected, really) and are sometimes harder to come across as a result. In my town alone, I can think of five places off the top of my head that fit the bill of "pub" as to how Gavin explains it, but they call themselves a "bar & grill".

Pro tip Matt; every day sleep an hour earlier, or later, than the day before until you get the sleep schedule you want. That way you don't have to make a huge adjustment at once.

Like stripper names, a proper British pub name follows a specific formula: A one-syllable noun paired with a two-syllable noun, neither of which has anything the fuck to do with the other. E.g., "Pig & Whistle," "Duck & Elbow," "Bong & Bedpan," "Zit & Dildo," etc.

a bar is a place with booze, a pub has a bar, the place where you get the beer and stuff in a pub is the bar.
