This is BS from the dealer! I did what you said in the video and it turned on. Thank you! First time it took more than 5min to turn over. I'm pissed because I just bought my 2010 dodge journey in feb2015. Should be a recall and a permanent fix because its not fair to leave families stranded in the heat or cold. Glad my 1yr old wasn't with me right now. If I couldn't get it to start we would have been stuck in the heat until I could get a tow,which takes money out of my pocket. Customers get ripped off!

The next day I talked to a mechanic who has a Journey & knows of the issue. It's called a PRNDL or neutral safety switch thats going bad. With so many people having this problem especially with 09's & 10's, shouldn't there have been a recall notice or something??
This video helped me today and saved me a lot of trouble. My car could not start in our building garage. When I turn the key it use to give a single click. Tow truck cannot come in as height is 6ft 8inches. We cannot push the car out as it’s a steep ramp. Came home saw this video and few other Q&A’s. Made sure that all the doors are unlocked (as recently one door does not get unlocked with the key or with button on the door, so had to open it manually). Then put the car in neutral and hit the ignition and Car started. After that it started to work on parking as well. Thank you very much Brian for your video.
my 2010 just did this. your video helped alot. so I found out if you don't put it in park correctly then that is what happens. if you have to start it like that often then make sure that you put it in park. and if that don't work you will have to get a new neutral safety switch put in. it's on the housing of you're transmission.
My car did this for over a year until I got stranded one day permanently. I was told it was the grounding cable … which never existed! They added one and the problem was fixed for about a year. It just started acting up again. Thanks for the tip Brian. I’m hoping this will solve my issue.

Of course, when we went to dealer and paid $95 for them to hook up diagnostic machine and say "there are no codes stored" and the system is down to check for bulletins. Whatever happened to real mechanics that could actually work on a car? Now it seems to be high paid 'part swapper outters'

Trade it in and get something different. That's what my gf did. We had a starter issue but it turned out the starter had burnt out. But yeah too many issues dodge want you to pay $89 to see if they can replicate. Screw that shit

Thanks to you I saved 1000.00!!!!!. After I was working in the fuse box, my car did not want to start. Chrysler dealer advised me on the phone that I had to tow my car to the dealer. (Towing fee 100.00) The dealer would then have to determine if they would be able to reprogram the computer (1 hour labor charge 80.00) or change the whole fuse box module for 1000.00. It took me 15 seconds to restart the car thanks to you! God bless you!

This problem has not come back since the switch was replaced almost a year ago! And yes it was a big battle with the dealer but they finally honored the warranty and did not charge us anything!

Same issue here with a 2010. My wife won't drive it anymore. I came up with my own work around that works some if the time. I wiggle the steering wheel and that will sometimes engage it. I also found by accident that immediately lowering the automatic windows while starting it makes it fire up with more regularity. Now, when this happens I can usually get it started in less than a minute. But I will have to try this next time... which will probably be tomorrow. Smh
I had the same problem. Had the neutral safety switch replaced in the transmission and it took care of the problem. It was under warranty but I still had to argue with the service manager but he finally had it replaced.

it's true just try to start in "N" first! ! it worked for me and I haven't had to chandelier anything or paying any penny to any Dodge car dealership who are usually CLUELESS! !!
Should be a recall soon, funny thing is once our '09 was shifted into neutral to start it has not failed for almost a year now in park. As far as the suggestion to buy a Toyota or a Honda, I'd rather pay for the less expensive and more versatile Journey and deal with it's set of problems compared to almost killing my family when the brakes failed completely not once but twice in my Honda Accord, or deal with (the dealer did fix it) fried engine when the oil pump failed in my '13 Corolla. Fairly sad state of affairs all around.
I am glad to see this temp fix. I have had this problem since I bought my 2010 in 2011. Two different dodge dealerships find nothing wrong. I took it to a machinist who told me yep...its the starter. Now ripped out of 300 bucks because they didn't diagnose the problem first. I'm going to write to dodge now that I have seen this issue. Thanks for sharing.
We had ours replaced, and cost was going to be around $1,000 mark. We had it over to - two different place's, first said starter - Nope, then brought it to dodge dealership, loose wire-harness to starter solenoid, at least they found something, second time going back, asked them to check out transmission range sensor, they looked into it and found it was riddled with fault codes. In short, it was faulty, required them to take apart the transmission itself. Haggled them down to $850, because they mis-diagnosed. I'd hope to god this don't ever come back, it's been about a month of this. I will try and write back on here as to where its.
My 2009 Dodge Journey SXT Does this exact same thing! (Engine engages but wont turn over) So Aggravated! It only does it every once in a while (Once a Month), and seems to last about 30 minutes to an hour then will start again. From what I have read there are THOUSANDS of these Journey's plagued with this problem (In addition to other problems) and Dodge looks the other way and wont acknowledge it. I hope someone starts a class action lawsuit. There are THOUSANDS of complaints on the internet about this vehicle. I want OUT of this vehicle!
i have a 2010 dodge journey and I just paid 1,433 on Dec 2 2015 for a second battery, retainers, valves replaced, spark plugs replaced terminals replaced oxygen sensors replaced. but just got the no starter problem last night. then on X mas. now car just got towed. any suggestions? I was told twice that its the starter. had the vehicle for 1yr with no problem now have over 100,000 miles.
Thank you! We just bought a 2010 Dodge Journey on Monday and have had this problem since Wednesday. Two tows later and still the mechanics couldn't figure the problem out. Between this video and some car forums we now have three different ways to solve this problem in the future.
It has been a while and I can't remember both of them. One of them was to take the key out, go out of the car, lock the car. Wait a couple of minutes and then unlock the car. It sounds weird but has something to do with the security system. If you Google "Dodge Journey won't start" you will probably find those car forums. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I had mine for 2 months and got the same problem , got it to the garage and told them about this issue with the sensor and they basically said I have no clue what i'm talking about , did the recall to the ignition switch and said its all good now, very next day had the no start problem again!! so I put it in neutral and it started took it right back to the garage told them hey problem wasn't fixed told them again its the sensor and they basically said well we cant find anything wrong with it even though I'm telling them what it is.... just because there computer systems don't show it doesn't mean there is no problem.
Next time this happens, take the fob (key) out of the car, locked the car outside of it and then unlock it, then get back into the car and it'll start up! The computer sometimes has a error and this is a way to reset it, hope this helps.
I have a 2010 dodge journey. Just had $1,100.00 worth of work done to it. Just to have it break down a month later. Found out it was a pulley in the alternator. Replaced the alternator($427.00) yesterday morning. Drive it in total maybe an hour just to have it break down again. It just clicks when I attempt to start it up. I tried the Neutral trick and it did not work.
Are any of your breaks hard cause I have a push to start 2011 journey Main Street it was working fine for 2 years but the power steering went out and it sat for a month and a half through negitive weather now it won’t start
I have my 2010 in the shop right now for the same problem.... they cant figure it out! I told them to check the range sensor..... He said he would look into it, I will keep you posted.....
no they did not change it.... the first time they changed the starter, that didn't fix it, it kept happening, they put an extra ground from the battery to the engine block and unplugged the fuse box in the engine compartment and checked every wire and cleaned the terminals and put it back together, which they found nothing wrong.... but since then I have had no trouble.... I guess I would try the extra ground cable since that is easy to do...
So could I ask you what was all the things you changed on your dodge..because I have a 2009 journey and the same thing also happened but I did the little trick you showed in your video...And it work but then it happened a week or two later and I thought it was the same trick thing again so I did so and it didn't turn on after that and it been broke down for a couple months now. I'm having the same issue..I have a 2010 Journey it's been in the shop (4) or more times they putting parts on it guessing what it might be and trying to charge me $100.00 deductible each visit,HELL NAW...I've had battery,starter,grounds tightend and a ignition modgular put on this one car and it's still not working...

Not only that my gf's 2010 journey use to roll the windows down randomly in the a.m., stalls and shut off any and everytime while driving. That thing was a death trap. So it got traded
So I told my mechanic about this video and he put a new sensor in it. He said the dealership sold him the entire prndl gear shifter thingy because that contains the sensor in it. Been less than 2 weeks and now it is doing it again. UGG. Any other ideas? Now sometimes it takes it longer to start too. It turns over 5 or 6 times instead of starting right up as well.
This does seem to be the issue and the resolution - the shifter assembly has to be replaced, due to the bad sensor.. I paid the local repair shop $550.. $300 for the part, $200 to replace it - it has worked just fine for almost 2 years, now it's acting up again and doing the same thing. Last time it gradually began to get worse and worse.. they said that they could try to warranty the part - offering 2 year warranty on parts but they did buy it from a dealership.. so I am torn as well - I don't want to keep doing this every couple years.. and I don't want to gets stranded somewhere.
why don't they do a recall to replace the sensors if this is a known problem? Last week this happened and they told me my battery had discharged, so they recharged it and I'm hoping this is all it was. I don't want to be stranded with the children because of this. Your video really helped because this is exactly what was happening with my vehicle. If it does happen again, I will try putting it in neutral just so I can drive it straight to the dealership. Got stuck at McDonalds today.. Tried the neutral trick and it did not work!! Ate my french fries and tried again..Halfway through my fish sandwich tried starting in park and wallah, it started!! Gonna replace that darn Range Sensor as soon as possible..
+Jesse Moore Jump it. Mine has the same issue and doesn't start in Neutral anymore. If you jump it, it will start. Even though the problem isn't your battery.
I had to call a tow truck and they jumped it for me and i had to drive around for 20mins without cutting the car off, something about recharging the battery and its been fine ever since.

Having this same issues right now in CT. On vacation til 18th and my dodge journey 2010 won't start without boost.

Try starting in neutral. If it starts normally then its the neutral safety switch in the transmission.
my parents have the same problem with their 2010, the dealer says they don't know since they can't duplicate it.

I have this problem, I put the car in N and it works everytime. except I use the manual release instead of turning the key to select gear

no they did not change it.... the first time they changed the starter, that didn't fix it, it kept happening, they put an extra ground from the battery to the engine block and unplugged the fuse box in the engine compartment and checked every wire and cleaned the terminals and put it back together, which they found nothing wrong.... but since then I have had no trouble.... I guess I would try the extra ground cable since that is easy to do...

So could I ask you what was all the things you changed on your dodge..because I have a 2009 journey and the same thing also happened but I did the little trick you showed in your video...And it work but then it happened a week or two later and I thought it was the same trick thing again so I did so and it didn't turn on after that and it been broke down for a couple months now. SO PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE!!!! AND THANKS

I'm having the same issue..I have a 2010 Journey it's been in the shop (4) or more times they putting parts on it guessing what it might be and trying to charge me $100.00 deductible each visit,HELL NAW...I've had battery,starter,grounds tightend and a ignition modgular put on this one car and it's still not working...
I was searching TH-cam about how to replace my starter (haven't purchased it yet), then I saw this video. If this works and the range sensor (?) is bad, I'll know exactly what to tell the mechanic so I don't get stiffed with changing the battery (again) or starter.

there is a recall on the ignition switch, just had mine replaced and got 2 new key fobs.

You "shouldn't have to do that" I have heard too many times with mine-and the horn honks and the music only plays 23 seconds and skips....

Not only that my gf's 2010 journey use to roll the windows down randomly in the a.m., stalls and shut off any and everytime while driving. That thing was a death trap. So it got traded
So I told my mechanic about this video and he put a new sensor in it. He said the dealership sold him the entire prndl gear shifter thingy because that contains the sensor in it. Been less than 2 weeks and now it is doing it again. UGG. Any other ideas? Now sometimes it takes it longer to start too. It turns over 5 or 6 times instead of starting right up as well.
This does seem to be the issue and the resolution - the shifter assembly has to be replaced, due to the bad sensor.. I paid the local repair shop $550.. $300 for the part, $200 to replace it - it has worked just fine for almost 2 years, now it's acting up again and doing the same thing. Last time it gradually began to get worse and worse.. they said that they could try to warranty the part - offering 2 year warranty on parts but they did buy it from a dealership.. so I am torn as well - I don't want to keep doing this every couple years.. and I don't want to gets stranded somewhere.

why don't they do a recall to replace the sensors if this is a known problem? Last week this happened and they told me my battery had discharged, so they recharged it and I'm hoping this is all it was. I don't want to be stranded with the children because of this. Your video really helped because this is exactly what was happening with my vehicle. If it does happen again, I will try putting it in neutral just so I can drive it straight to the dealership. Weird... my 2007 dodge charger does the same thing it also shutoff on me in the middle of the highway now it has a weird knocking noise...

Got stuck at McDonalds today.. Tried the neutral trick and it did not work!! Ate my french fries and tried again..Halfway through my fish sandwich tried starting in park and wallah, it started!! Gonna replace that darn Range Sensor as soon as possible..

Yes! It usually happens to my 2009 Journey without any code! I just put the gear in Neutral and start!

+Jesse Moore Jump it. Mine has the same issue and doesn't start in Neutral anymore. If you jump it, it will start. Even though the problem isn't your battery.

Did you get your car fixed? What was wrong? I'm having some problems with mine right now.
I had to call a tow truck and they jumped it for me and i had to drive around for 20mins without cutting the car off, something about recharging the battery and its been fine ever since.
