Visited the 9/11 Museum here in NYC recently and was so "happy" (not quite the right word) that they included the Disintegration Loops in one of the installations. I recognized it as soon as I came around the corner and heard it overhead. A truly difficult museum to spend time in without getting choked up. Very fitting that they included it.
I wind up back here, something special about this piece and this footage. It articulates something deep in the centre of it all. Less a political opinion piece and more just an honest lament, for the state of things, the quiet ache of the human struggle in this current age. The cycle of melody and the slow decay, the imagery of billowing smoke. It is wrong to think of Sept 11th as some sort of beginning of anything. For some it was the end of an innocence, the end of the illusion that somehow peace and prosperity reigns. Instead there is a strangeness when one realizes the decay that already exists, the strain and tension that ripples beneath the surface, the polished shine of America, held together by such carefully stretched strings. And so much we wished to over look, that we cannot over look. So much we wish to point the blame and miss our own brokenness and darkness, this darkness billowing out of our very centre. May we have compassion to see, wisdom to learn from our secret selves, may we learn the value of forgiveness, the bankrupt nature of revenge, may we come to sense the wounding of our passivity, to no longer ignore the lives we hurt with the excess of our consuming lives, and the insatiability of our corporate greed. But this all takes time, and maybe for an hour we can sit with it, and try and discern it's whisperings.
iTzDark740 There are a lot of great "minimalist" composers out there that achieve the same thing for me. I like Terry Riley's concert in Koln; I come back to it all the time. Arthur Russell helps me, too.
abreather Beside the ones you have named is there any other songs that are as soft as this or if not sound similar? Cause I am struggling a little bit right now with my depression even more.
iTzDark740 Interesting that it helped you through some parts of depression. This masterpiece is a haunting reminder of the decisions I made my first semester of college. Ever time I listen to this I do the samething I did the day I heard this; lay on my bed, turn all lights off, and slowly close my eyes as a tear herre and there falls. The psyce is a wicked thing.
the day just ended here about an hour ago, but still: may we honor those who helped on this day, and keep those who didn't make it in our hearts may we pray for a brighter world tomorrow, where we can all learn to love just a little more
+MrZaZa3k12 Agreed with both of you. With that being said, I think of this video as another way to look at that opinion. Look at the sun setting sky. The remnants of that beautiful clear blue day, and the orangey tone at the bottom. A new day is coming.
Imagine being the plane passing by at 29:14 . Seeing all the chaos that lies below. In a way, despite how powerless you are to it, you keep chugging on... It's sort of poetic in a way. This video is a work of art; a historic footnote of our American history. May we all keep moving forward; despite the hurt we have faced.
Just heard this on BBC Essential Classics this morning. I tuned in too late to get the composer & title so had to listen to the programme again on-line to find out. Now I've found it on You Tube. Thanks for the upload.
Pompy for this genre or that haunting but simple loop type of tracks there is so many pulled off so perfectly that i struggle to put them in order.. i would probably still say rhubarb is at the top with burial - forgive trailing behind at a molecular amount # rhubarb # burial - forgive # gas - pop, track 4 and 7 # stars of the lid - even if you're never awake # stars of the lid - meaningful moment through a meaningless process # disintegration loops 1.1 and 3, or just the whole album.. # boards of canada - nothing is real # stone in focus is pretty up there.. lots more BoC and SoTL too, there is so much of it. they all seem to convey the same emotion
These notes are simply amazing. It is so infinitely absorbing and easy to understand. I love it so so much. The information about the video is interesting and this music bodes so very well, being heavy. This music is solid gold. X
This music reminds me of the hours after 9/11, like how the rest of the day went. Families crying, calling their relatives about the events that unfolded. I imagine a family of 5 sitting in their apartment in manhattan crying over the lost ones, panicked and confused, looking out of the window and seeing the smoke clear out.
incredible, overwhelming, poetic. have spent moths of my life listening to this. it is the only piece of minimalist music my partner will listen to, she becomes mesmerised.
Thoughts in fragments my mind yearns for clarity. Ideas fade like the days of youth that can never be relived. We all live in fragments of time. Use it wisely, we all die alone. Beauty is found in pain. Without the pain I feel, I would never understand the beauty that surrounds me. I am isolated.
I think I agree with Stockhausen's comment on 9:11 being one of man's greatest artworks. It's pure expression, and it was witnessed by, inspired and utterly moved millions of people.
@Russell Colwell If this is true about the chickens (which I too often doubt) then the other way around is also true...id est good deeds will return right back at you. This is the case för me. I have received unearned unbeleivable pain and beating during my life. I dont know why...I must have been a very horrible man in my past life or so...

came here after listening to the caretaker, i was happy to find that the loop here doesn't change
it becomes more and more heartbreaking as it decays and as the gloom of night overtakes it. As a piece it is masterful. As an event, a tragedy.
I legitimately listen to this to help me go to sleep every night..this also helped me get through some parts of my depression.
iTzDark740 me too
iTzDark740 There are a lot of great "minimalist" composers out there that achieve the same thing for me. I like Terry Riley's concert in Koln; I come back to it all the time. Arthur Russell helps me, too.
iTzDark740 It's crazy how music can have such an effect on us. this is true beauty.

This has been one of my favorites for years now. Those three notes were made for each other
the day just ended here about an hour ago, but still:
may we honor those who helped on this day, and keep those who didn't make it in our hearts
may we pray for a brighter world tomorrow, where we can all learn to love just a little more
+Teddy Edwards What a beautiful comment, Teddy.
feels like a lamentation of anything that has ever happened in all of time-- the buildings look like they could be from the middle ages
+swantonist innnnit, ur not wrong cuz!!!!!
Beautiful and depressing as hell at the same time.
+MrZaZa3k12 Agreed with both of you. With that being said, I think of this video as another way to look at that opinion. Look at the sun setting sky. The remnants of that beautiful clear blue day, and the orangey tone at the bottom. A new day is coming.
It's the song of feeling unsuccessful, being more depressed over days.
Listening to this, you're witnessing the literal death of music.

I can listen to this song all day on loop without getting bored
I just bought the CD boxset of all 4 of these records, and I gotta say, they cut me deep
***** it was 80$ but I feel it'll be worth it in the long run
***** See, that's also how I feel, but a lot of people seem to think that's stupid. I'm glad someone else knows what I'm talking about...
Josiah Perske nahh man, they've brought me many nights of peace and solace.
+Urine Denial it's been a year, still worth it?
Oh yeah, literally one of the best cd purchases I've ever made. I fall asleep to them quite often, makes for good dreams.
i hope this song is what death feels like.

Such a beautiful piece of music, but very emotional. Reminds me of Aphex Twin - Rhubarb.
+MegaSnippezz Totally. both songs are gorgeous and profound, and at the same time painful and melancholy.
rhubarb is my the greatest song of all time, in my opinion. this is also in my top 10 probably. well there's my taste in music for you.
+Edgar Pifflewiff Care to share your top 10? If you have compiled it that is.
Pompy for this genre or that haunting but simple loop type of tracks there is so many pulled off so perfectly that i struggle to put them in order.. i would probably still say rhubarb is at the top with burial - forgive trailing behind at a molecular amount
# rhubarb
# burial - forgive
# gas - pop, track 4 and 7
# stars of the lid - even if you're never awake
# stars of the lid - meaningful moment through a meaningless process
# disintegration loops 1.1 and 3, or just the whole album..
# boards of canada - nothing is real
# stone in focus is pretty up there..
lots more BoC and SoTL too, there is so much of it. they all seem to convey the same emotion

Is this what dying sounds like?
+samantha smith

untill you get to the higher astral planes.. then the real music begins!

shoutout to william basinski for making the best working music ever
Some of the best electro ambient stuff I've heard pretty much ever, and I don't say that shit lightly.
+Jay Lenno :: Sure agree ::

This legitimately makes me want to fall asleep and never wake up... not because it's good. A negative feeling of depression and horror.
This piece makes me want to cry
This is so beautiful. It transcends music. It's pure art!
I come back here every year
I think I agree with Stockhausen's comment on 9:11 being one of man's greatest artworks. It's pure expression, and it was witnessed by, inspired and utterly moved millions of people.
i think this is what the stars must sound like
Fuck. I cry every year.
Magnificent and sad. Befitting of the first day of the 21st century.
this made me cry
Pure as cold in a winter morning
this is what dying in your sleep sounds like
Somehow this reminds me how Gary Jules' Mad World turn to ambient for hour....
Just to drown in my own tears.....
Thank you William....

Around 50 minutes, I get some serious silent hill vibes. Cool!
I just might have to listen to this next 9/11.
Thanks for this!
The end, the en, th en, th e, t e, e...
powerful stuff
Now I know where Broken Kite Footage came from. There's something about this piece that reminds me of Graceland.
I listened something dying.
playing right now on 95.3 Boston
Beautiful. Terrifying. Awe.
nice :) found this in the related videos for slowed down aphex twin tunes. Can anyone recommend anything else like this?
Basinski released a really haunting piece called melancholia, it's similar to this check it out
Gas - Zauberberg
Urine Denial Thanks for the Gas - Zauderberg suggestion - so good!
Kugel Blitz Check out Gas - Pop as well, lighter in mood, but still excellent :)

If you keep your emotions in check you can listen and hear that this is a repetitive series of notes that amounts to NOISE!
