It's not exactly Barbenheimer but this holiday season we'll be having a clash of titans at the theaters as both Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King and Paramount's Sonic The Hedgehog 3 will be releasing in the very same slot. And unlike being a surprise booster for both movies, this is very much the conflict of direct rivals. Gunning for the same demographic at the same time. So the question is, who will end up on top? Who has the most hype garnered behind them? And what will this mean for animation in the future..?

A friend of mine who had never seen the first two movies looked at this trailer and went "that's a day one for me." This is going to bring in so many new viewers cause just by virtue of having Shadow, it is going to be more mature. Which will work in its favor. I'm wondering how parents will be feeling about Shadow's past being on the silver screen. Ohhhh that'll be fun.

I heavily doubt they will explicitly show Maria getting shot. She'll probably get caught in an explosion or otherwise die off-screen. It will be more mature in tone but still very much suitable for kids, anyone who expects this to be an edgefest will be dissapointed.

@@just_an_elli Soo true, especially because the confirmation that Paramount was legally given the rights to that banger was revealed by the person who officially wrote that song and sang it for the SA2 game. (Johnny Gioeli lead singer and songwritter of Crush 40) He confirmed that song's inclusion after some fans questioned him about that.
It's confirmed although it's likely just going to be on the end credits rather than in the movie itself.

I think there's a possibility of Mufasa grossing less than the Lion King remake, some of the latest Disney reimaginings like Cruella, Dumbo, Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid didn't perform as well as they expected (though Pinocchio was a streaming movie), and some of the sequels to popular Disney movies like Maleficient 2 and Tim Burton's Alice Through the Looking Glass perform badly at the box office despite the originals doing great numbers. I've seen some of Disney's reimaginings like Cinderella, The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast, but I had no interest in the Aladdin, The Lion King or Mermaid remakes, perhaps people are getting tired of them
On the other hand, I've saw both Sonic movies in theaters and I enjoyed them, I think their earnings were affected by the pandemic, but now that we're fully recovered Sonic 3 could make over 600 million dollars at the worldwide box office
On my country, sonic 3 also come out a day before my birthday

I think another big thing that sonic three has in its corner is the new game Sonic x Shadow Generations. It's looking to be extremely good and it's going to DEFINITELY bring the kids in the seats for the movie.
Sonic 3 is a movie I'd consider seeing in theaters, Mufasa is a movie that I'll probably watch a few months after it releases on Disney plus.

There are loads of people who liked the first movie more.
The overall conclusion is that the first movie is just a movie featuring Sonic while the second movie is more Sonic-ism with action and characters, lore and easter eggs. But the second movie is paced and put together more sloppily while the first movie is a more charming and well put together story.

Here's the sad truth:
James Earl Jones will always have a special place in our hearts from the iconic Darth Vader to Mufasa in The Lion King (1994), but as he pointed out in the animated feature:
"A King's time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day Simba the sun will set on my time here. And will rise with you as the new king."
In other words, Disney has to move on from their respective IP because they've already proven themselves as juggernauts in the animation industry, over milking their brand is only going to turn their target demographic away. Yes The 2019 remake was a financial success when it came out, but the hype died down as both critics and audiences caught on awhile after. Even Elton John who provided music for the animated film didn't like it.
I'm sorry but Sonic 3 is going to outperform Mufasa, straight up. 😑💯

I feel like the Mufasa prequel could have worked in the animation continuity with Scar as the adopted sibling instead of Mufasa.
It 100% will. People are fu**ing tired of soulless “live action” remakes from Disney, and would rather see the 3rd instalment of an already good movie franchise, that gives fans what they want. If Disney made the Mufasa prequel 2D animated, then people would probably be willing to see it.

Its not a question of can but by how much, Mufasa is an unneeded sequel to an already 'meh' live action remake of a Disney classic. Whereas Sonic has being going strong, now on his third movie, giving fan service and just a generally fun move experience.

Before this video, I was having the same thoughts as you near the end; it isn't likely but if Sonic 3 actually squashes "Midfasa" in the box office, that's gonna be such a massive victory for Paramount, the ever-growing Sonic community, and the internet as a whole. It may also be a step in overthrowing Disney's live-action remake "get-rich-quick" scheme, or at least making Disney reconsider putting all those man-hours to more original/animated stuff instead.
Hell yeah. I know none of them are out yet, but I'm excited to see Sonic 3. I won't bother watching Mufasa. Besides, Keanu Reeves is voicing Shadow.
The only reason their making Mufasa is because of how successful the live action Lion King movie was despite everyone hating it. The movie banked off everyones nostalgia, and since then, people have become aware of how bad or mediocre the Disney live action remakes can be.
I don’t really care if Mufasa beats Sonic 3, i just need it to beat sonic 2 so, it can be considered a success.
Let's hope Sonic 3 overtakes "Mufasa" at the box office, 'cause it'll probably mark the death knell of the live-action remakes, maybe with "Snow White"'s potential flopping being the final nail in the coffin.

To be completely honest, I think both of them will do very well in the box office. The lion king 2019 is one of the highest grossing Disney movies ever, this will definitely appeal to young kids who enjoyed that movie. it will also likely get more of a boost since the death of James Earl Jones. I expect Mufusa will at least make around the same amount as sonic, the problem is Disney live action movies cost a ton to make so they need to raise a ton more to make a profit.
I hope Sonic 3 out performs Mufasa at the box office.

Only time will tell, but we know that it's not impossible for even Disney sequals/spinoffs to flop regardless of how big the previous films were. After all, Lightyear and Alice through the looking glass were massive failures in spite of Toy Story 3+4 and the live action Alice in Wonderland making over a billion dollars each. While i can't confidently say i'm expecting it, it's possible that Mufasa could end up as another failed spinoff nobody wanted, especially since it has legitimate competition. I'm sure Sonic 3 will be fine even if Mufasa makes more money, but i don't think i've ever rooted harder for one movie to win over the other and i'd be beyond happy if Sonic 3 won the battle.
Mufasa isn't going to appeal to many people beyond the hardcore Lion King fandom and doesn't have the nostalgia safety net of being a shot for shot remake of a beloved movie. Sonic 3 is a continuation of a story about the Bugs Bunny to Mario's Mickey Mouse.
While James Earl Jones’ Passing is Heartbreaking to Know, this Mufasa Movie that would have been better if it was a 2D Animated Prequel like Transformers One, Sonic 3 will surpass Mufasa no matter what as Sonic Movie 3 is more Hyped and Requested than a Semi Continuation to one of the Worst Disney Live Action Movies Ever Made.

The thing about Mufasa is that they are using the people who done the original CGI lion king movie, and wanted to do something better after making that movie that has a very distinctive and Jesus-like style.
Why “Jesus-like” because realism is a replication of his art style that showcases his extremely complicated and precise craftsmanship every artist wants to take from him.
Here are three reasons why i think Sonic movie 3 will beat Mufasa at the box office
Reason #1: Paramount actually knows how to please fans of an established IP Unlike Disney. Most people online are saying that they'll see Sonic 3 rather than Mufasa
Reason #2: Disney's current business model is mostly nostalgia pandering via live action remakes and unnecessary sequels. Usually what ends up happening with these is that they ruin what made those movies special in the first place. Plus, from what I've heard, no one was asking for a lion king prequel, the like/dislike ratio on its most recent trailer can kinda testify that.
Reason #3: Disney, in their response to the recent lawsuit against them, has gone and flushed a lot of good will that they had with their audience down the drain. For those who aren't aware, a widower tried to sue Disney because his wife died to her peanut allergy when they ate a a restaurant in Disney world, the but because he signed up for a free trial for Disney+ prior, he could not sue. Disney faced a LOT of backlash because of this. They've since backtracked on their stance, but that doesn't just make the bad press go away, I'm kinda thinking it is gonna hurt Mufasa's outcome
That's despicable. I'm not sure if the whole being unable to sue thing applies only to the trial, or if it is also for those who paid the whole time, but my mom has Disney Plus AND we go to Disney together.
She already has copies of almost every Disney movie, so I may compile some sources about this and talk her into unsubscribing.
Also let your mom know about the time they didn’t let a dying kid put Spiderman on his gravestone because “it ruins the magic”
I think sonic 3 is going to be a runaway success. Because let's be honest here, Disney's reputation has gone far down hill. Losing their own fans every day, with every stupid decision they've made. Not to mention, that the Disney live action remakes, have lost interest with people over time, even if it's an original story, I don't think people will give it the time of day, because it's associated with the live action remakes.
Sonic on the over had, has built up trust and respect for it's audience, both casuals, and sonic fans. Not to mention that sonic 3 seems to be taking the complaints from the last two movies, and taking them to heart, with more game characters, and less focuse on the movie original humans. And shadow will just bring in a million by himself anyway.
That did not stop them from making to billion dollar succesful movies.

Honestly the only reason I remembered Mufasa existed was because of the date. If it wasn’t competing I would have forgotten it all together. I am definitely going to see Sonic 3 opening weekend and the other I will refuse to see it in theaters.
Not to mention it is Jim Carrey's last film before retirement, I think Sonic 3 has a good shot at beating mufasa

My theory is unlike last time in 2019 (where Disney is lucky with the box office numbers), more people nowadays hate Disney for multiple reasons, including countless soulless live action projects (which lots and lots of folks of the Internet hated it). And also, in the 2020 decade, the shenanigans of Disney live action movies are dying. Granted, there may be a few families curious to check it out, but I feel like it does not say much for the hype.
Sonic 3, on the other hand, has a really promising trailer with a very promising fanbase (which the first two were already good, despite their limitations from the pandemic). And for sure a lot of kids would be down to watch it.
Like Mario party with over 7 starsonic.Three has an automatic victory over Mufasa. Especially with the fact that people now have Beef with him for taking Scar's Place in the Pride Lands.
I do hope so, because Sonic 3 has a lot more potential to be a really good movie than the Mufasa Movie

Knuckles doesn't stretch it's plot, it doesn't undermine or demean the titular character, it doesn't desecrate what came before, it wasn't dragged out over an extended period of time, it wasn't used as a political soapbox for the showrunners to spout their poisonous ideologies onto the viewers, and it justifies it's own existence.
^ All things Disney+ Marvel and especially Star Wars are guilty of in spades.

There's a Mufasa movie? The only movies on my watchlist this year are Wicked, Sonic 3 and Wallace and Gromit. I guess that says a lot.
The Lion King will probably sell a lot of tickets to all the disney adults looking to recapture their childhood, but the people who go to see Sonic will probably have a lot more fun. If the previous movies are any indication. I know I'm rooting for Sonic, but disney is able to get away with murder and people will still give them tons of money just because they saw a couple of VHS tapes as a child.
No one expected a lion king "live action" prequel, but people have been waiting for Sonic 3 since the moment the end credits for Sonic 2 started rolling. I'm sure I'm projecting a lot of my own feelings onto the wider public, but I at least know what others in the comments are thinking.
That’s exactly it. I sent someone a link to the article about the Disney + allergy lawsuit and the person’s response is that they agree with Disney. Normies who aren’t chronically online love Disney, and there’s a lot of them. I have a feeling that Mufasa will make a LOT of money.
That being said, I refuse to watch it and Sonic 3 is getting my money.

And, just by looking at the trailers, with the return youtube dislikes extension, there are just more numbers when it comes to the like to dislike ratio for the Sonic 3 trailer compared to Mufasa. Oh, and comparing the viewing numbers, when we are going off the trailer posted on Paramount's channel, Mufasa wins. However, Sonic 3's trailer was posted on Sega's channel, and the official Sonic the Hedgehog channel. Combining numbers that way, Sonic 3 wins by a much larger amount of views. I haven't been able to find other channels where the Mufasa trailer was posted, but I don't want to be one-sided despite wanting Sonic to win.
I did a bit of research, and I think both have about the same about of views (~22-23 million each). The Sonic Movie 3 trailer initially released more than two weeks after Mufasa though, so I'd say this win goes to Sonic.
However, we also have to keep in mind that, as Dazz said, Sonic is definitely the INTERNET's favorite to win. That doesn't necessarily translate to a guaranteed box office win, especially because Mufasa will likely attract an older audience who might not spend a lot of time on the internet.
Sonic Movie 3 will be successful. It might even beat Mufasa on the opening weekend. But I highly doubt Sonic will gross more than Mufasa overall.

The fact Sonic 3 could potentially outsell a Disney movie is a prospect child me would never think possible. Yet I am all for it, both because I am genuinely excited for Sonic 3, I have been a fan for a long time, and because I just hate Disney. So any way to negatively impact them is a win in my book.

It looks like Sonic 3 might be PG-13(just look at how dark and intense the trailer is) and those rumors have been going on for a long time so if one’s PG and one’s PG-13 they’re not really both aimed at kids.

One thing that will certainly get people to not want to see the Lion King prequel is that “Scar” is actually the rightful heir to the throne. Think of it: They’re actually saying that Scar had a valid motive for trying to take Mufasa’s place when he HELPED his now apparently adopted brother get his inheritance! What kind of idiotic story decision is that????? You would have to be absolutely desperate for any kind of new twist to even consider that as a last minute addition! 😤

I've been waiting my whole life for Sonic Movie 3. I watched sonic x as a kid and I've been a sonic fan ever since.
We're comparing one of the most iconic characters of all time to a movie we didn't even know we were gonna get ._.
I think the charm about the Knuckles series is that, while it's "bad", it's not "bad" in the actual bad way of the word (I know lol), but it's more because they clearly don't take the series... well, seriously. The amount of randomness I witnessed in there, along with such a serious character as we all know Knuckles is teaming up with the comic relief Wade, made the entire thing actually enjoyable even if parts of the story didn't make sense. Definitely waiting for season 2. Also yes, I believe the third movie will overtake Mufasa.
