    Great video...Have the same receiver but I am a complete newb when it comes to setting up
    what you did here. So I just opened mine, figured how to get that heat sink off,
    renewed the thermal grease and put it back together.
    My lack of knowledge was tapping that 12 volt power for the fans.
    So ended plugging a small noiseless stand alone fan to an outlet
    and pointing it to the receiver top grill to add a bit of flow.

    Oh nice! I have one of these controllers for the two 120mm fans in the cabe box i built for my iMac last year, in which I hid an external hard drive, ethernet and usb hub and all the power supplies. I followed an old tutorial and it never dawned on me to look up the meaning of the solder jumpers. Thanks for making me aware. Off to the solder iron!

    I had to do a cooling mod to my SA-TX50 as it gets very hot. And the vents on the top cover are very small and is not enough for dissipating the heat. I don't know how Technics thought of this back then. I've mounted a 120mm fan on the top of the heatsink, and a 80mm fan at the back. And for the psu I use a small power brick, which is connected to where the mains go in to the transformer. So when I turn on the receiver, the fans turns on.

    Excellent video. Listened to this on a similar (Denon AVR-1602 5.1 from 2000) with a much simpler setup.
    In my case, since it never really showed a sign of getting too warm, I just went with a single 80mm fan on 5 volts.
    Dead silent & always cooler than it would've been. Similar mod on a 1980 Realistic STA-800, just to prolong its life.

    How about make a video showing how you made the regulator w/ input output caps;

    Nice work,i solved this problem in 90is with another fan over the original fan,convected to outside power supply,sa ax6.

    Very nice, also very complicated mod. I own and use SA GX505 as well as whole system based on SG U91 that is in storage. Running 2 channels only, flat. Very clean and powerful sound. Those two, receiver and amplifier, generate heat moment they turned on. More power more heat, of course. OEM cooling leaves much to be desired. What happened to 'other' KISS principle - keep it simple stupid. Three, low profile, USB powered fans with speed control. Dual port USB wall charger (all amazon). Install and run power off receptacle at the back of receiver. Cooling runs the moment you turn receiver on.

    Great mod and nice explained. I have a SA-GX300 Receiver. Is quite identical with the exception that there are less features but the amp and mainboard is the very same. I was thinking to setup an internal PC 120 Fan just over the the heat sink fins, or look for a better disipation aluminum heat sink. This is a big design flaw.
    I recently got this one failed with this very same problem you address. I've replaced the Hybrid AMP and the regulators but I'm missing some resistors values since they are completely toasted.
    I was wondering if you can provide values for R771, R772 and R614 that are around the RELAY module. Would appraciate your help greatly. Hope I can recover this one. It sounds fairly nice. This one has been with me since I purchased it new in 1991.
    Sadly I was not able to find any diagram or service manual in the internet.
    Any way thank you for sharing!

    Nice, I will have to try to do something like this on mine, I have the same model but it's about ready to die. The LCD screen is dead and the sound is really low for a few minutes, then comes on. Need to recap it and see if that helps.

    Hey, just wanted to be clear before I do this myself: how specifically did you bypass the overload protection again? Or did your receiver not have that sort of check... I've got a technics SA-R477 which I just recapped and sounds excellent and the recap was subjectively a night and day difference but I want to protect the components with proper cooling

    What regulator did you use . I want to do this to my amp which is the same as this one. Thanks.

    Do you think I can just use an external fan blowing into the hole? That's what I've been doing but I can't crank it past 4 or so it gets too hot

    I just got one more suggest , make a dust mask on the top , maybe it's magnetism or simple things can cover it well, them it should take care itself for a long time~

    Great work! However, wouldn't it be possible to replace the linear logic
    supply with a switching regulator so it would not put out that much heat in the first place?

    • @TheUbuntuGuy
      @TheUbuntuGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but then it would be a lot more work and you'd have to filter the switching noise back out of the supply.

    Yeah...this kind of cooling dr
    esigned by Technics is strange...
    But more strange is,why the power amp section goes always very hot,even no music is played,and ofcourse volume knob is less than half its way..!My Su X520D has this kind of issue,and yours aswell...
    Probably it is just a nature of that hybrid Integrated power section used by Technics (SVI family) ...called New Class A???From my observations...
    There are plenty of commonly used Power section pacs from STK family,and they are never become even warm,if music is not played...
    I have 2000's Denon on Darlingtons,I have also powerful stage No Name amp on SA1943/5200 transistors..no issue of this kind at all!They go warm/hot only if music is played quite loud...
    If no music played they are cold as ice!
