    I lost it when you just let yourself get bitten by a centipede (twice) and still decided to hold it, yet you seemed much more hesitant to pick up the gopher snakes
    I’d take a bite from a non venomous colubrid over a centipede any day lol

      @GeneralApathy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I practice not getting bitten by any snakes that I handle regardless of the species. This later becomes helpful when handling non-lethal venomous snakes (Malpolon, Oxybelis, Trimorphodon, etc.) because a lot of them are pretty sketchy. Meanwhile, with centipedes across the world, it’s easy to know what you’re in for.

      @@GeneralApathy, I grew up in Monterey, catching gopher snakes, California kingsnakes, striped racers, yellow-bellied racers, garter snakes, ringnecks, sharptails, etc... I've been bitten by gopher snakes, garter snakes, and racers innumerable times. I've never had a sharptail, ringneck, or kingsnake even attempt to bite me. I guess if you travel to other parts of the world where you have snakes that are somewhere in between harmless and deadly, or just venomous enough to cause some kind of reaction, it makes sense to learn to avoid snakebite, even by the ones you know are harmless, but for me trying to avoid being bitten would have meant modifying my behavior in a way that doesn't really help me engage with the animal. I mean, letting them bite me, when it's not easily avoided, is my way of telling the snakes, "It doesn't affect me so chill out -- I'm not a threat anyway."
      As for centipedes and arthropods generally, they've always struck me as creepy and potentially venomous, so I generally avoid interacting with them. I just notice them, and look at them briefly. That's about it.

      @@GeneralApathyAre there any centipedes outside of East Asia with medically significant venom? 🤔 (Like could hospitalize/be fatal to someone)
      Also why did you say you _have to_ pick up any centipedes under the rocks you flipped? It seemed they were mostly buried/partially buried i.e. if you just rolled the rocks on their side without moving them and _gently_ rolled them exactly back in place, then there shouldn't be any risk of smooshing the centipedes 🤔

      @@Darhan62 Good points. The Ringneck is venomous but oh so slight. Not harmful to humans. Not sure how that small mouth to bite a human anyway.

    Today I found an eastern ringneck snake, 3 northern red belly snakes, 6 maritime garter snakes, and 2 eastern smooth green snakes. Sadly a lot of people here are not snake friendly. My uncle drinks a lot and smokes. So he says he's killed a few but he also says he's caught a few and put them in buckets and threw them back outside. So at least he doesn't kill them if he knows to do better.

    It brought me a lot of happiness when you changed “mean” to “defensive” I appreciate that respect. That gophers hiss was really funny to me for some reason and the cut from it being really defensive to just chill in your hand was hilarious

    Gopher snakes are sweet, we have quite a few on my property, I even caught one to keep as a pet but it escaped in the house and was never seen again; though I'm sure it made it's way back outside, probably the same way the field mice get in.
    I'd go out flipping rocks to find snakes, but we have a ton of rattlesnakes in our area(they always seem to be really feisty) and the closest hospital is 40+ minutes away; dying is not on my list of priorities at the moment

    That was a mildly humorous cut from the large snake being panicked by your presence to the snake just submitting to your presence.

    Down here in the southeast US (central Georgia) you have to keep a hook pole to flip logs while herping.
    I'd say a solid 70% of the snakes you find under a log here are venomous.
    If it's a rattlesnake, you're fine, they'll run first every time. Copperheads are a little tricky in that it's a 50/50 chance it feels like, whether they run away from you or chase you for a few yards.

    is that T. torosa or T. granulosa bc you said rough skinned newt in the video? T. torosa doesn't go very far into proper norcal compared to T. granulosa and the ones you found do look pretty rough. my assumption is that the height of their eyes gave it away? since T. granulosa typically has a flatter head with lower eyes

    I hate picking up animals not because I’m scared of them but because I’m scared for them. I always worry that I’m going to be too rough and hurt them. Luckily I don’t have to pick up too many creatures except toads and the occasional gecko. Both of which will either run or jump right into my hands so I don’t actually have to grab and potentially hurt them.

      From the animals mentioned in the video, I've caught the ringneck snakes, slender salamanders, gopher snakes, newts, and jerusalem crickets (a different species) here.
