  • Saphir Reno'Mat provides an in-depth leather shoe cleaner to remove the build-up of silicones, resins, and dirt that accumulate over use, thereby preparing leather to receive the full nourishment offered by Saphir's Medaille d'Or products. It can also be used to remove darker polishes that may have mistakenly been applied.

In my experience the Renomat is actually one of the more gentle wax removers, often taking over an hour to completely clean a single shoe. Saddle soap is a much faster method. Acetone is the fastest and easiest but careful with overdoing it and damaging the leather. I usually use saddle soap to take off the majorly of the old wax/polish then use Renomat as a sort of “detailer” to take away any leftover spots.

I accidentally nicked my new walnut strands with black AE speed polish. Very small nic. I bought the Saphir Reno’Mat and tried to remove with a few passes but it’s still visible. Can I really dig in to remove or do I risk damaging the leather? I will say this particular spot on the shoe is very sensitive and darkens easily after applying polish though it returns to its natural color in minutes.

What is the best way to deal with water spots? I have a pair of new Allen Edmonds in Walnut that before I treated in any way got wet and now has several dime sized light spots on the vamp area. I would guess that the shoe shining routine you normally recommend would end up covering these spots well, but I want to make sure the next step I take will be effective and don't know if using Renomat or anything else would better before going through the normal shoe care process. Thanks.

2:10 in such cases which Saphir product should be used for a proper cleaning?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

At the factory, when leather is dyed, it is done so with permanent, alcohol-based leather dyes. These dyes cannot be affected or removed by shoe polish or even the Reno'Mat. In order to affect a properly-applied factory finish, a stripper has to be used.
From time-to-time, we will have customers whose shoes seem to be affected by the Saphir products or even the Reno'Mat. In most instances, the factory/brand always blames the shoe polish. But it is impossible for Saphir Medaille d'Or or the Reno'Mat to affect a properly-applied, alcohol-based leather dye. It just doesn't happne.
If you do have a shoe that is being affected by Saphir, then I would recommend cleaning it with a wet rag. It's about the only thing that will work without affecting the finish. Any proper shoe polish is going to contain solvents (to soften the waxes and penetrate the leather), which would all have the same affect on the shoes.
You could use a really cheap, water-based shoe cream, such as Meltonian, but it is important to understand that polish at this quality level does nothing to actually nourish the leather (it can actually damage it), and is akin to just rubbing something on top of the surface of the leather.
Now, if you have a really cheap pair of corrected-grain leather shoes, there is no pour structure left to the leather (it is no longer natural), so conditioning is not important.
      Hope this helps!

I just bought a bottle of Renomat to restore a pair of shoes my brother gave me when i started my new job a couple of years ago.
Just finished one shoe and the formulation really works. Thanks for the reality check on elbow grease. Getting the dried on hard wax streaking out (don’t ask ha ha ha) was, to put it mildly, an herculean effort.
There’s still some visible streaks and spots so i wonder if i should do a second round again or perhaps nourish the leather first before doing another round.

I've just taken all the old wax polish off a pair of Church Oxford shoes. I used a very sharp Stanley knife blade held at an acute angle. This fetched off most of the polish in two minutes. I then used Reno Mat.

Can't imagine this is a widely accepted practice, 😳

I just used the renomat on my Allen Edmond With Ave, and maybe I used too much elbow grease, but it looks like it pulled off the original color. I have the most recent Bourbon color. Is it possible to pull off the original color? And what Saphir cream polish do you suggest for Allen Ed Bourbon color?

I have a Bourbon Carlye and find that the medium brown cream is most similar to bourbon. I also patina it with a bit of black polish.
The Bourbon color is just really a Walnut shoe that AE ran through a polishing wheel for black shoes. Hope this info helps.

Noluckbuck123 thank you. Are you also familiar with the chili color? If so, could the medium brown polish work on the chili color?
