There is nothing wrong with ear pieces. It's just that they didn't have them in 1981 that worked properly so they had wedge monitors. It's so you can hear what is being played, otherwise you can't. What we hear on stage as musicians is not what you hear in the audience

Glad you recognise the whole band, so many only see Freddie. As Freddie himself said, he is only the lead singer, not the leader of the band, they are four equal band members. So good to see Brian, Roger and John getting the praise they deserve too.

Three of the four were great singers, and all four wrote number one songs for the band. You need to watch their performance at Live Aid, imagine six songs as powerful as this one. I was a Beatles fan as a teenager, but now that I'm old, I have become a huge fan of Queen and Freddie Mercury.
John could sing, though not like the others, but didn’t like to. He’s pretty shy from things I’ve read.
I heard a singing coach once say , after Freddie , Roger Taylor had a world class voice .

Freddie Mercury had a great voice, so charismatic on stage, not forgetting of course the other members of this great band, Queen. Brian May, (guitar), John Deacon (bass guitar) and Roger Taylor (drummer and backing vocals). Together they made one of the most legendary bands of all time, amazing catalogue of music and Freddie himself left an incredible legacy. This performance in Montreal in 1981 was fantastic and a fabulous song. Love watching YT live videos of Queen, including of course their phenomenal set performance at Live Aid 1985, anyone who saw this will never forget it! 👍😊

If you watch, you hear Brian signal the band, that’s why Freddie’s head flips around. Roger and John go into the holding pattern and Freddie got up and started engaging with the crowd you can see Brian walk off stage to fix whatever he needed to fix and the when Freddie sees Brian returning, he times it perfectly for Brian to get to the microphone to sing harmony. They are a well oiled machine

@@susanwgallagher-wc6jn Actuallllly, I have heard/seen many guitarists say that when Brian broke a string on the Red Special, he would grab another guitar for the duration of the song so his assistant (it wasn't Pete Malandrone at that time. Pete didn't start until Jan. 1994.) would change the string on the RS and it would be ready for the next song. When Sir Bri walks back during this song, he has the RS in his hands and he comes back with it. The guitarists I have heard/seen talking about this said there are any number of tweaks he might have needed to do and it would be hard to guess.
BUT, the freakin' fabulous part is how incredible the team/band was together. They were seamless with mistakes/changes/shifts and Roger has often said, even in the Commentary for this specific Concert, that they could almost read each others' minds and connected with each other via eye contact. If you have not seen the Commentary, do take a look. It is a HOOT! Roger is one naughty boy!
It's very possible that Brian broke a string (guitarists break strings all the time) but if you listen carefully enough there's only a few seconds where the guitar is not playing in the background; if there was a guitar switch, they were ready to go at the drop of a hat and switched out literally in a matter of seconds. However, that breakdown was a part of every one of their shows, not an impromptu sing-along.
They knew each other so well, and had so many non verbal signals between them everything was just seamless and effortless. Not a beat was skipped when Brian had to leave the stage..the timing of everything was impeccable.👑👑👑

Queen had this show recorded with 35mm film with the intention of releasing it as a feature length movie on mobile screens. It’s had a few dvd releases over the years and this January it was remastered in IMAX and was wildly popular.
Pretty much, except it was director Saul Swimmer that convinced Freddie Mercury to film the show. Freddie liked the idea of being on massive theater screens all over but Freddie hated the cameras, he thought they were too distracting. Throughout production the band grew to hate the way Swimmer did things and didn't keep the band informed. As a film director, Swimmer knew the stage had to be brightly lit within a certain color temperature to get the best image captured to film, he did not inform the band that he was changing their lighting. He also demanded the band wear the same clothing for multiple performances so the film could be stitched together from multiple performances. He also demanded that the band moved and danced the same way each night, which really pisses off the band because nothing is choreographed for live shows, which really made performing uncomfortable for the band
The IMAX version is AWESOME!
The decision to record on film also benefitted the quality of the audio recording as it was done reel to reel.
Freddie Mercury is the Greatest Font man of All time. "Somebody to Love" is just one of Queen's great songs. It's too many to mention of their great songs and Live performances. Freddie is a great composer and singer. He has a unique charisma that you can't explain. His duo with Roger Taylor (Drummer) is great. I hope you continue your discovery of Queen so you can tell for yourself what a great band they are. Live Aid is something you should be able to react to because it's a testament to their talent as a band and Freddie's superb performance around the world. Thank you for your great reaction. Watch carefully and you’ll see the total professionalism of Queen, too. Brian May breaks a guitar string, calmly walks towards the back of the stage, changes it, and the other band members just improvise until he rejoins them, stage front. A total class act.
The drummer is roger Taylor. If you like his voice you’d love I’m in love with my car from this same Montreal show. He is good enough to front any other band by himself.

Roger did have his own band called The Cross which he had alongside Queen he was the lead singer & played rhythm guitar they did 3 albums before disbanding 🎸
I was thinking the same song! I love Roger Taylor. I'm in Love With My Car is a great song. You're right IMO. He could be the lead singer. I've heard in an interview that depending on Freddie's voice, Roger stepped up to get that higher register. That was towards the of end their touring days but they really are a family.

You noticed how he moves on stage - wait until you watch DRAGON ATTACK from this same concert. it's 2 minutes of audience play (call back) and then the song begins and Freddie literally slinks across the stage. Watch for it. No MAN walks that way. Kicks his feet out at the need, slight torso twist and manages to appear slink up and down in slight height changes while doing so. I absolutely love it. Love that you also noticed how he sits back down mid song at the piano has flawless pick up - no missed keys. At the end of this song Roger takes over the lead singing giving Freddie time to scat like - he is playing with sound his mouth creates. This is a masterpiece of a live performance. And I think it's show cases the perfect growth of Freddie's style of mustache. lol

This performance always makes me cry 😭 You can tell Freddie wrote this song because he pours his entire soul to it talking to God about why he's so lonely with nobody to love. RIP A LEGEND

Freddy getting the recognition and love across TH-cam nearly 30 years after he died and was annihilated by The British gutter press, well it really gives me joy. That was such a sad time. Incredible performance by the entire band. Freddie was an amazing musician and all around talent. The reason the quality of this video is so good is because this concert was filmed to be viewed in a format that was larger than IMAX. This was not video film, it was filmed on 8mm film. The audio on this is excellent as well. I recently saw this concert in IMAX and it was incredible, you truly felt like you were right there front and center at the venue. It was so good that I went back and saw it a second time. The movie was only circulated for 2 weeks and was not advertised. I only knew about it because I follow Brian May and Roger Taylor on social media. It wasn't even listed on the cinema page. Sony just bought the entire Queen catalog for a billion dollars so I am guessing that showing the movie is somehow attached to that sale. Roger Taylor is the drummer and he actually has the most amazing falsetto which you will hear in some Queen songs. Brian May is the guitarist and he too has a great voice. Both Brian and Roger are lead vocalists and have been in their solo careers but when you have Freddie Mercury as a lead vocalist and Front Man, you might as well let him carry the load. I saw it in IMAX as well. I entered a contest for tickets, and won, and found out it was in London. I’m in CO. But the promoter told me it would be released in the US and to watch for another email. It was extraordinary!! I wish I could’ve seen it again. Every part of this concert is great!

Great intro! Couple of things I would add. Sir/Doctor Brian May had his own band "The Brian May band" and put out some great music as did Roger. Brian is also is a great singer. I swear that man has played in some capacity with every famous musician. Big or small ways. Queen pretty much had 3 lead singers (John did not sing)
As for their musical style you can't put Queen in a box. There is no box they fit into.
Also anyone new to Queen (or just doesn't know) Brian and his dad made his guitar (The Red Special) when Brian was about 17 out of parts around their house as Brian could not afford a guitar. Fireplace mantel, knitting needle, his mother's pearl buttons. Except for a small facelift one time it's still the guitar he plays to this day 50 years later!
Absolutely phenomenal performance by these legends, all the members of Queen amazing musicians and each member of the band have written No1 hits,Queens greatest hits album is today still the best selling album in their home country the United Kingdom 🇬🇧,I attended many memorable live performances from these legends and I actually attended LiveAid where on the day Queen stole the show with their legendary flamboyant performance,and LiveAid was televised to around 1.9 billion people worldwide, I also attended Freddie’s very last performance with the band at Knebworth Park 1986,to a crowd of estimated 120-140 thousand people, great reaction thanks 🙏

YESSS, obviously this is a great “letter perfect” performance… Queen also has many other live performances as well that - depending on who you ask - actually rival this or - again, depending on who you ask - even surpass it.
Queen prided themselves on being a live band, and are actually the ONLY group who were renowned for being even BETTER live than in-studio.
It would just be a shame if someone who is new to Queen, were to stop after seeing this one performance (or this and Live Aid) …thinking that they’ve seen all that Queen has to offer.
With over 200 songs in their catalogue and having performed 700 concerts, far from it!
I was privileged to see them live in concert twice and they are best. When they did We are the Champions, Brain May played an extended guitar solo from that song,, so amazing
This song is one of my favorites too.
Certainly not the only group considered better live, dire straits, pink floyd, led zeppelin, skynard, the who, the doors, deep purple, rush to name just a few.
@@samlawrence4670 All I know is that I’ve watched many many many music reactors watch/compare Queen studio tracks with live performances of the same songs, and 99% of them actually said that they preferred the live performances over the studio recordings. (This is primarily due to the fact that Freddie Mercury’s vocals in live performances were always much more dynamic than just in the studio, because he “fed off” the energy of the audience.)
I DO also respect and appreciate the groups you mentioned (and others as well, not mentioned here) who I’m sure are equally as good live as in-studio.

I am a diehard Led Zeppelin fan and a huge Robert Plant lover. I am a 70’s teenager and have been to 100’s of concerts. Queen is on my regret list. The first time I heard Freddie’s voice I thought of an Angel. He is the GOAT of frontmen in R&R!
Freddie was such a treasure. While I didn't get to see him live, I'm so fortunate to live in a time when I have his voice.
This band is a gift. Adam does such a good job honoring Freddie. He was the perfect addition to modern Queen. They allow Freddie to live on.

The band created beautiful harmonies in the studios, but their live performances were on another level, and this live version is very different comparing to the recorded one, that you have heared on the radio. Great reaction, you have noticed the nuances as well.

Thank you....Yes!...John slapping the bass!...while Brian plays a syncopated half beat at the same time...Freddie wrote this song as a tribute to Aretha Franklin...he admired her greatly...he had hoped that she would sing it one day...it certainly has a gospel feel to it🤩

It is scatting,, baby, it is. If you look at other live videos of this song you'll see that they've set aside thoses 12 bars for improv on everybody's part. Other performances are completely different. These four guys were all such accomplished musicians, and had played together for so long, that they could very nearly read each other's minds. If you know what to look for you can find examples of them playing around like this everywhere. Queen as a group is without equal. Freddie, well, Freddie was touched by the gods.
Brian and Roger are the founder members of the band (Smile) that was to become Queen after Freddie and John joined. I'm so glad that Freddie said he was the lead singer and not the leader of the band. It takes all four members to make Queen, and each had a vote on band decisions. I've always thought of Roger as a percussionist, rather than a drummer, and so important to hits like Bohemian Rapsody, and Now I'm Here!

I saw them in Philly on Thanksgiving 1976 with Van Halen opening up. I'm onto hard rock/heavy metal and they were the best show. They did songs that they didn't play on the radio.
Great reaction. At about the 7:00 you can see the guitarest, Brian May walking backstage as Freddie across. Brian broke a string on his guitar. Freddie, along with Roger Taylor on drums and John Deacon on bass just bided time till he got back almost seamlessly. You mention in your reaction how John is just strumming his base to the drum beat. You can see Freddie look back to Brian coming back at 7:45

Four musical Geniuses. You were right when you said all the band members had to be on the same page so to speak. They absolutely knew every aspect of each other. There are some great documentaries that show why and how well they knew each other. Some people think Freddie was the whole show. You know better. Freddie was Queen and Queen was Freddie . Thankyou hope to see more Queen along with so many other great performers of times gone by 👍🏻❤️

I'm an example of someone the right age to have been a live Queen fan, but I was busy in college, graduate school, etc. I actually thought, back then in the U SA , that they were an all-gay band, and as a young woman in the 1980s, I just had no time or interest in pursuing Queen's music. UNTIL now, after seeing the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. NOW, for the past two years, I've delved deeply into Queen and esp Freddie. I've read ELEVEN biographies of Freddie, and am still watching the thousands of videos from performances, to "Reactions", to interviews, and I cannot get enough. I now know more about Freddie than I do about my own field of study. And I am utterly overcome by him and that VOICE, that gift straight from God. I am totally mesmerized by the voice and watching him sing, watching them all, but esp Freddie. The magical charisma he had, it's like I'm drugged, I cannot get enough . Say what you want about that movie, but had I not seen it, I'd stil NEVER have "found" Queen and Freddie. I am grateful that we HAVE these videos, and I assume and hope there are millions more like me, who have even now been discovering Queen and Freddie. And yes, that Montreal 1981 show was one of the very best; the quality of the video was because it was meant to be a real showcase, official video. I also like the Budapest 1986 show; it too is very clear, as that iron curtain country wanted to show the world what they could do. I LOVE a good and understanding Reaction, and esp a pure strong appreciation for what you are SEEING and HEARING; something that we won't see again in life. Freddie's voice was one in a billion.
He was so charismatic he filled a stage. From beginning of the band to his last performance.
I saw them four times in concert, including this tour. If you wanna get close to the same effect it’s easy. Watch the video of their show at Wembley (not Live Aid) from 1986. With headphones on, volume set to max+ for the whole concert. Remember, given a choice between live or studio version of a song, choose live. Like, Who Wants to Live Forever, or Save Me and of course their set from Live Aid. 🖖🍻

The seamlessness of Freddie's movement from piano to mainstream microphone is truly amazing, as are the accompanying musicians, who articulate guitars and drums. It's a group of extremely talented, individuals. Try Bohemian Rhapsody, that's their iconic signature song, just as popular now, as it was in the early 70's.
This song was a homage to Aretha Franklin!
Queen is one of our greatest exports from the UK. Freddie was THE ultimate frontman.

Little known fact to some... >Freddie was apparently a decent Boxer in School (he also man handled I think it was Sid Vicious out of a recording studio). Freddie was no joke even beyond singing
Agree with Jamie. They had this performance playing in imax theaters in January, and I drove my mom four hours to see it. My mom was watching Live Aid on TV getting my baby room ready at 8 1/2 months pregnant, so Queen is very much her favorite band. I actually love this performance even more than Live Aid.
Two other recorded Queen live performances that are - to me - on the same level of perfection as this and Live Aid, are:
White Queen - Live at Hammersmith Odeon, 1975, and
You Take My Breath Away - Live at Hyde Park, 1976
- although others will of course have their favourites.
Both intense tales of love: unrequited or insecure, White Queen features a mind-blowing piano/guitar duet/ instrumental break between Freddie and Brian while YTMBA is just Freddie alone at the piano, quieting a rowdy crowd with his exquisite solo performance in the green twilight. Both utterly magical, not to be missed.

About the band…
Freddie Mercury, lead vocals, piano, guitar sometimes. Had a degree in graphic arts. Designed the band's logo and many of their early costumes. Died of AIDS in 1991.
Brian May, lead guitar, backup vocals. Made his guitar with his dad while in his teens. After Freddie died, went back to finish his doctorate in astrophysics. Has worked with NASA. Works for animal rights. Knighted by Charles III.
Roger Taylor, drums, backup vocals (the high notes). Has a degree in biology (was headed to dental schoool).
John Deacon, bass. Electronic engineer. Built a lot of the equipment the band uses on stage. Doesn't like to sing.
All 4 have written #1 songs and all are individually in the songwriting hall of fame.
John retired after Freddie died. Brian and Roger are still performing (in their 70s) both solo and as Queen with Adam Lambert out front.
They may have argued viciously in private over creative ideas but they always had each other’s backs.

My favorite Queen song
Jump down the Queen rabbit hole to 1975 at Hammersmith Odeon and listen to White Queen. The interplay between guitar and piano is otherworldly with bass and drums keeping it grounded. An amazing hidden jam. Haven’t seen a reactor yet that hasn’t gone crazy over this song.
My friend's uncle was at that show in Montreal at the Forum.. he introduced us to Queen in the late 80s early 90s. That particular performance.. he wouldn't shut up about it! 😂😂 (With reason!!)
The Foo Fighters before Tyler Hawkins passed away, did a cover of this in concert and Taylor Hawkins was the singer. He gave him a break from playing the drums and then Dave Grohl would play while he was singing a great video.
The original concerts were recorded over two nights in November, 1981. It features Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon performing some of Queen's most iconic songs, including "We Will Rock You," "We Are The Champions," "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Another One Bites the Dust." Tensions were high on and off stage due to such creative differences, and to annoy the director Freddie wore shorts for the encores on the second night (he wore pants on the first night) nor did they even perform the Elvis cover, which meant much of the footage couldn't alternate between both shows. The executives said they had to wear the same clothes the 2nd night. Freddie being Freddie came out in very short shorts, no shoes, no shirt. They filmed the movie that way. Lol lol Freddie didn't drink soda or beer before or during the show. Was afraid he might burp, he drank tea with honey 🍯
All four are so totally in the zone, individually and collectively. Giving 100% Regarding he scatting, Freddie never sang the same song the same way twice, (he said that would be boring for the audience) he always improvised to some extent and the band are so in tune they all just go with the flow. Roger's singing whilst playing the drums is outstanding.

Hard to beat Queen. Genius performer along with everyone in the band. So glad I had the music of my youth. 1960s Summer of Love. We had it all. 40 years of great music.

The entire band was amazing, but Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest ever. He was, like so many, a tortured, misunderstood artist. He poured his essence into his music. You could see that he loved the music he was making. RIP Freddie. I hope you finally found peace; and thank you for the music you left us with.
