I absolutely LOVE this song and as Amber said you can absolutely lose yourself in the journey. So many fantastic Supertramp songs though. Too many to say this is my favourite. I guess if I had to put some sort of order on them it would be: (1) Give a Little Bit, (2) The Logical Song, (3) School, (4) Dreamer and (5) It's Raining Again. I return to these again and again.

@@briandonohue2502 If Jay and Amber want to go REALLY deep into prog rock they could review Rush - "2112" , Mike Oldfield - "Tubular Bells" or Renaissance - "Song for all Seasons" but maybe having a video of an hour or so (including comments) would be too much work to make or too long for people to listen through! Plenty around these days like the album Octovarium - "Out of Time" or Andromida - "Voyager".

    • @Particulator
      @Particulator ปีที่แล้ว +2

Why is it scary or surprising that good music last through the years. Just like paintings and sculptures, music is an art form and great artists are remembered. Right now, while you read this, thousands of musicians are playing music written centuries ago, there's even a chance that human invented music(Neanderthal flute) before they developed a language. We who wear the ears, are responsible to "feed" them the good stuff. Don't let an algorithm decide for you what you must listen to. I would argue that most of the music crap we are fed from the medias these days is somewhat the same as Trump's NFTs for visual art, cheap ,shallow, plagiarized and unimaginative.

All I can say is try not to think about that guy for the next two years. Just like in a play, there is an intermission, which is intended to give everyone a rest, so that they can be all fired up mentally when part two inevitably comes.
You'd be wise to take a mental break from "part one", and get that guy out of your head in the meantime.. afterall, this intermission only has 716 days left in it. 🤣

Seriously, you two need to listen to the whole album in one sitting. I was very young when this album came out, but I bought it. I was 7. I really didn’t “get” everything that they were trying to convey, but the music did take me away from where I was at the time. It was amazing. The best distraction from a stressful (not entirely in a bad way) childhood. I was raised in a very strict home on military bases. Dad was often away fir training exercises. We were often on bases isolated from cities and “the real world” populated by homes of civilians. If we didn’t move in any given year, most of our friends did. There was little to no contact with the extended family. But my parents let us have our escapes from daily stresses by giving us unrestricted use of base and community libraries, and both my brother and I were given radios for our rooms. The music was the best. The era I grew up in was filled with such variety and such amazingly creative artists. The reason I started watching these reaction videos is to see the joy and wonder on your faces. It takes me back to not only when I discovered the songs, but the moment that the meanings “clicked in” for me. Thanks for posting the videos. I look forward to seeing them daily.

In college, "Crime of the Century" was always the album we brought to the store to test out stereo equipment and speakers before we purchased. Also, fortunate to catch them live on the breakfast in America tour. Quite the combination of music and visuals on a large screen. They were late to take the stage, so they made it up to us by playing almost three and a half hours without intermission. That night they opened with "School". The first time I decided to put this on and JAM along with it, my discovery was, you don't/can't just JAM along with Supertramp, these songs are ALL definably so well arranged you have to revisit them with a respect of musical educated, sophisticated, and tasty groves that moves you to higher levels!!!

I love Supertramp, and your reactions to them. Please react to Rudy or Fool's Overture next. Two really good Supertramp songs that I know you will love. The title track from this album, Crime of the Century, is really good too.

Crime of the Century album is immaculate from start to finish! Supertramp continues to be unheralded and deserve more recognition than they receive. The RRHOF needs to come knocking - damn shame it hasn't happened yet!

One of my favourite albums of one of my favourite bands & one of my favourite songs from that band. I was 9 in 1974 when Crime came out but didn’t discover till I was 14 when all of middle school did too. I fell in love with their music and have ever since

When I met my husband in 1977 he drove around with 8 tracks playing in his car stereo. This was one of them. I knew the album (it was a few yrs old by then) and some of the trackss but he made sure we listened closely (and loudly), his fingers softly beating time to the tempo on the steering wheel. Or the local FM station would play entire albums in the evening, Crime of the Century being one of them. We still love the album and I'd label it progressive pop rock.
Someone commented that you should react to Rush's 2112: Overture/The Temples of Syrinx (1976).
Talk about headspace! Jay, you will LOVE the heavy warpspeed guitar riff, and Neil Peart's drums that bring it over the top. No lyrics until several minutes in...and man, they're fabulous! It's a crazy concept album depicting a future in the year 2112 where strange priests rule society and have outlawed music. But...someone has found a guitar! The song lyrics amount to a lecture from the priests but oh, what a tune they lecture with!
    Please consider it.
Blessings to you and your sweet family ♡

I have been waiting for you two to discover this song. I just knew that you would like it. For me, this is one of those songs that I like to call, "a driving song". You know the kind of song that you want to hear while you are out on the highway on a road trip. It starts out nice and slow and then just builds up speed. It is a classic for me anyway.

When I was 13 in 1974, a friend's family here in Canada had a pizza restaurant. One of the restaurant employees just happened to be the sister of a Supertramp band member. She had her brother send a copy of the album signed by the band that she gave to my friend. At the time the album was only released in the UK and it was almost three years later that the re-release became an international hit. It's possible that when we used to listen to my friends copy, we were the only ones in North America doing so. We would hang out and play the entire album repeatedly. It was (and is) so good! I suspect my old friend Neil still has that signed copy after 49 years but the album itself is likely worn out.

Supertramp was sort of prog, but with an interesting jazzy twist. This whole album is brilliant (as others have said). This was a great opening track...also love Asylum, Rudy an the title track Crime of the Century.
I was fortunate enough to see them live after the album came out - still remember it so clearly...lights go down and opening with that haunting harmonica...epic

The songs you've done up to now are very good although they are their more commercial successes. Now that you know what they can do, you might try "From Now On", "Crime Of The Century", and "Fool's Overture"... these are masterpieces! Enjoy! Keep on bringing us great reactions!

There are so many different grooves and turns in this song.. It is the band's classic and the opening track on a great album. One thing that is so much less today is the experience of picking up an new album and putting it on starting with track one - side one. This song starts off one of the best albums ever released.

"Give the people what they want, when they want, and they want it all the time !" If I remember it correctly 46-47 years ago...It is the only repetitious chant throughout the whole 7 minute song !!

      No!
      They were OF their time.
Todays garbage couldn’t hold a candle to these masterpieces.
Have a listen to Roxy Music’s debut with Eno on board.
NOTHING like that would be recorded today.
Today should look up longingly at those 3 magnificent decades,60’s,70’s and 80’s and bin the current soulless trash and absolutely concede that THOSE decades are the standard of musical excellence.

Love Supertramp and so pleased you two are discovering their greatness. Also, excellent insights Amber. As a retired teacher of 40 years, you're exactly right. American schools were created to prepare children for the factory system in the mid-1800s and not much has changed since then. It was all part of the dumbing down of America - no individuality, no creativity. Schools, at least those behind the scenes, only wanted to create little robots of the state. Sad but true. I did my part to change that, but I'm only one person.
