i think the biggest misconception is that workouts ONLY improve aesthetics, but actually it improves almost everything there is. Even 30 minutes of sports per WEEK, already gives you deeper, better sleep, hormones are more under control, u feel more energized overall, less tired, even mental capacity goes up, because exercise creates just as many new neuron onnections as intense studying does, better skin, better hair, better eyes, better everything, literally and the list goes on and on and on.

A good strategy is to have walking be your only mandatory daily requirement and then add on official workouts 3-4x per week as extra credit.
When you get in the habit of daily basic movement like walking, that anyone can do for free, it elevates mood and overall health. So actual exercise seems less intimidating.

I’ve heard a lot of people saying” just do only 10 push ups” and I was like “cool amazing I can’t actually do one” “okay do knee push ups” “still nothing!” Finally a trainer showed me to do push ups against the wall and then a windowsill and then a bench and then the floor. Also I highly recommend- if you are going to go to a gyms- go to one that old folks go to. Those gyms have a “gotta keep this thing working” vibe rather than “I need to be better today than I was yesterday so I can be impressive!” vibes

I feel very lucky to have found coaches that know how to scale any exercise to any ability. It's especially helpful when I have a mild injury (like an inflamed tendon) and they can give me a substitution. I wish more people knew about things like the pushup progression you mentioned.

I think the end of the video is the one the the least mentioned but most important aspects of fitness. Most fitness content assumes you want to push yourself to your absolute peak, which is very hard. If you just want to exercise for health and wellness though, it quickly becomes much easier to maintain after the first year or too of building your body (which is also hard).

Good for you man. One thing that you haven't listed that you should also probably consider is that it is a very good example to set for your daughter. I've never had any of the problems you listed because my dad was military and he "trained" us physically from the moment we could go running with him. I've always been in shape because it's a habit that I learned growing up. It's a part of me now.

I feel like having a parental example would definitely help with that and I hope I can be that example for my future family! ^-^

As much as I love the "aesthetic, bodybuilding" part of exercise and working out and everything, I do think the common view of working out from people who don't engage with it is JUST that side of it and that can be and is a turn off for a lot of people. I respect that you make a point to present exercise as a thing that can sort of be whatever you need it to and I'm sure for a lot of people "feeling better and having a little more energy" is enough of a reason to do it.

    • @bodycounter9386

I actually think that working out in general can be overwhelming at first. Going into the gym for the first time in your life and seeing all these trained people can be very intimidating. Working out is much more than just building muscles so i can only advise moderate training for everyone still being sceptical.

Working out really has helped me with my mental health a lot more than I would've thought. The ability to go outside and not get consumed by anxiety about the way you look, the way you move and a million other things is incredibly freeing. It's not that I even look that different, you just get more confident with yourself with regular exercise. You feel like you've put in the work and everything else is out of your control, so you stop worrying about it as much.

How has it done that exactly? Because it hasn't worked out that way for me at all.
Just for context, I have been trying to exercise for the last...20 years on and off? I have done everything from big box gyms to dinky five-person Crossfit gyms. Biking, Kayaking, Running, Hiking etc.
It all sucks, it all fizzles out after a year and I find the whole experience pointless. On top of that going to the gym tends to give me anxiety.
I don't get where the good feelings come from. 🙁

@@mbogucki1 i was also coming to this thread to ask the same thing, and maybe ask OP for pointers. The first thing EVERYONE (even therapists) say is "go workout!" I kept this up for a little over a year straight. I was very fit, but it did nothing for my depression. Beyond that, i don't have a car so walking and biking are my primary modes of transportation.

A great way to get exercise without even noticing, is thinking about how you commute to work/school. Taking the bike instead of driving will make a huge difference, or even just driving half way, park the car, and then walk to work/school the rest of the way. The whole idea that exercise means you have to do push-up and jump around a room is a highly misunderstood viewpoint, and that's really what scares a lot of people from exercising. You just have to think about moving your body in a way that 'increases your heart rate and exerts your muscles', it's as simple as that.

It's been around 10 months now, that I am unable to resume my workouts properly. I started trying to introduce some walking on a stepping machine, though. Like do 15 minutes of work, and then 10 knee-pushups, or studying on the ground while stretching. Personally it helps me keep my energy up. Taking a break to go to the gym personally helps me work longer days with more productivity. But some people really do have every minute scheduled. Good luck with your degree :)

You didn't ask, but I'm going to say it anyway. Until i started doing it very regularly, the biggest misconception I had about working out was that it was driven by self-hatred. A kind of thinking that went, "I hate my life and my body as it is right now and I want this exercise session to be how I can get to a point where I can finally deserve to love myself." After getting into a better mindset, I realized that exercise can be a celebration of my body as it is right now and that, with exercise, I'd learn more about my body and how it can change and, because of that knowledge gained, I'd be able to love my body even more fully.

I recently started working out like 10 simple excersixes everyday for two weeks now sometimes I also walk with it now. I do it late before bed but as long as I do it. Once I get use to it I’m going to try doing it earlier.

The no time and no fitness excuses loomed over me until five months ago when I decided I'd do ~something~ once per day except on Sundays. Now here we are, enjoying the 4 daily exercises that started as 3! And adding some stretching and slowly pumping the reps up!
For me the best part is feeling the changes rather than seeing them, like how carrying stuff that would leave me breathless last year is now easy.
It also helps a lot to have an accountability buddy, even if really far away, and marking the exercises on the calendar, so the completionist in you won't let you skip a day even if it means squeezing it in right before sleep!

Ive really been enjoying ur content and its gloriously amusing presentation style. All of ur topics are of interest and speak to all of us 40+ ladies and gents. They make me think about my own excuses and ability to find reasons not to follow up on things i know i should be doing. Did 15 sit ups and 15 push ups whilst still watching and will be restarting my fitness prog… with a nice swim in the beautiful local river in Celle, Germany. I also used the 10 minute at a time suggestion which let me tackle a number of small issues that kinda heap up over a period of time. Thanks very much and all the very best to u and ur delightful family

I'm at the point that always kills my momentum. After a year its now the slow growth period. I packed on a ton of muscles in the last year and I'm at the point where doing more hurts (I get tennis and golfers elbow at the same time. Should just call it lifters elbow.) So I have to STOP progressive overloading, and that just kills my interest. I love tracking my strength progression and now its just the same weight week after week to maintain. I do find it boring and discouraging so I have to change up the workouts to make things interesting. I walk a hilly 5k once a week and added a water resistance routine that is really interesting.

hey craig, love your videos. they have truly helped me make so many necessary changes to my life. i’m getting better every day and you’re to blame!
i just wanted to point out a little concern i have with the sponsored link. i clicked it to see if i would be interested in signing up, but it immediately takes you to an unskippable quiz that is functionally just copilot data harvesting.
it’s a really small “problem”, and maybe i’m being over sensitive, but it did turn me off of the program a bit. maybe i’m wrong but i have to imagine other people felt similarly.
i would have liked to have been able to read some stuff about the program, instead of immediately being put into a quiz that boosts their marketing info.
i didn’t even get to see the cost of the program before they started trying to collect metrics from me.
just a thought. i know you don’t have any control over that side of the link, but i also assume you didn’t know that that’s what happened & i wanted to let you know.
still love your work, and i appreciate you more than i have words for. sorry that one of my few comments is a criticism.

In february this year, a friend offered to make a workout plan for me. I didn't realize it at the time, but it was a great plan. I had never followed a plan before, but I realized I could never have worked out on the regular without a piece of paper telling me what to do. If I was left to decide what I "want" to do for my work out, the answer would always be nothing. But once I obey my paper, I have so much fun.

Running is a lifechanger. Like magic. Never thought of it like something fun. But it will be, once you get into the community and get some park runs or even a little 3,5 or any race. And i say it as an ex-acrobat and basketball player. Yes, running is not boring once you get into it. Took me half a year. Trail running will make you travel and see thing and experience them the way you've never felt before. This is worth training for. And journey will be a pleasure.

I went from never working out and overeating every meal to doing that and I am down 16lbs in about 2 months

I know the feeling of being lost in the gym back in the days. It is very helpful to get in touch with someone experienced who can sort your first training plan together with you. It's especially important to learn the correct techniques at the beginning. Good luck with trying out a Copilot.

I like that your only goal is consistency, and just keeping your good health. The idea that we need to be constantly pushing forward and trying to achieve peak performance is offputting, and definitely a barrier to exercise for those of us who don't really care about that.

I'm just starting out at age 46, and I watch SeniorShape Fitness because she does really simple, enjoyable workouts that even beginners can do and master. It's a GREAT place to start! [Edit: AND it doesn't cost $99/mo. Yikes, Copilot...] I just pick one video (currently it's a beginner kettlebell video) and do that one every day. I like it because it's adjustable - I add weight as I get stronger. My goal is simply to dedicate a few minutes every day to something, no matter how small. It seems super basic but it's made a huge difference already in my strength and ability to do things around the house. I'm even motivated to move more on days I thought would be break days, and I've started hiking. So, find something simple that works for you, and if you're just beginning, check out some stuff made for old people. No shame, it's a fantastic place to start because anyone can do it! Start small, start easy, and, soon enough, you'll be moving on to more advanced stuff! In the end, big or small, it's more about developing a regular daily routine than anything else. You can do this!

  • @thatjillgirl

Time is definitely the biggest barrier for me. And yes, if I'm honest with myself, I probably do have the time. But it's hard to get motivated for it when I'm so burned out from work. I come home and just don't want to do anything that requires effort. Although I know from experience that I would probably feel better if I just went ahead and exercised.

    • @ranchan1111
      @ranchan1111 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just. Get. Started.
Every single day all you have to do is get started. Even if you don't finish a workout at first, as long as you just get started you should take that as a success.
You don't even have to worry about whether the workout is "good". Eventually you will build enough momentum to improve and do more. But, for now, just get started.
