I felt like the end left the story unfinished..."and then they all died"
I agree with that. It isn't a very satisfying ending, is it? There's a lot of built-up tension that never quite amounts to anything.
After you explained Poe's state of mind and the message he was trying to send, "You can't escape nature" it made sense. I have to admit.
