IIH by Bardon is an internal power system based off of the elements as a form of letter magic. As such, it is an equivalent to the Six Yogas of Naropa, Shingon Buddhism, the Eight Limbs of Pantanjali, etc. The primary difference between IIH and most Western systems of magic is that it is not a ritual based system. As such, development is slower than a ritual system, but the practitioner is not influenced by the egregores associated with most ritual systems. The items missing in Bardon's system are a viable method of body training and breath retention. My efforts, and that of Mark Rasmus, are largely organized around correcting these.
Yeah I'll be meeting Sifu Rasmus at the end of the year and I'm looking forward to speaking with him and asking him some questions about his approach to IIH.
@@JivecattheMagnificentwas doing a system of Caucasian yoga and got immense power/willpower in the beginning I got up to the third book on my own and then read mark rasmus book got slightly better and then found sixty skills. I highly recommend learning from him.
@@tmmmedia731 Is this his Backdoor into Hermetics that you read? I will be learning from him but probably only for a couple of days as I'm already a student of both Master Yap Boh Heong and Master Dennis Wang, so it's hard to see myself also becoming a full time student of Sifu Rasmus (however amazing he is, and I don't doubt that at all). Perhaps you could also attend? I don't know where in the world you are, but Sifu Rasmus is teaching at The Martial Camp in December this year, near Chiang Mai in Thailand.
I think most adepts in Bardon's system agree that "master" was an unfortunate choice of words, and should more accurately say "gain proficiency"... and if you can't, just do it the best you can and move on, as it will likely self-correct as you develop further proficiencies. I feel like that wording may be the cause of so much folks' failure to progress. I at first had a severe aversion toward Bardon's work, thinking it was obtuse and poorly laid out. But lately I am thinking it might be one of the most important works in magick...
A very wise bit of reflection and advice you give there regarding 'mastery' etc.. I think what you wrote should be quoted at the beginning of all magical systems books.
The most important thing for the beginner is to realize that the practice part of the book is not a linear progression despite being presented as such. Its basically a blind. Just like step one is.
The emphasis in Bardon's system is that the magician should successively strive for achieving elemental balance within him/herself before attempting to direct and control the elemental forces, also Bardon wanted to present the system as non dogmatic/non egregore related, unlike many other systems that are very group/orderderived or related. That said, Bardon has definitely been influenced by the likes of Agrippa, Pascal Beverly Randolph (fluid condensers). There is a great youtube channel of Clint Sabom that helps you clarify the instructions and exercises "The steps" in a simple way. There is also a great companion guide to Bardon's book by Rawn Clark which helps greatly in understanding the system:"A Bardon companion" .
Wonderful to see you covering this book. I think we all knew it would not be for you, but still great to see you looking at it and maybe getting an understanding as to why some people really do well with it. Many thanks.
I've been a disciple of Franz Bardon for many years, and i was like you before adopting the path he lays out. It takes time to move beyond the intellectual understanding to appreciate this system. This book is actually for beginners, there are two others that follow for more advanced students and a third that remains incomplete. At your stage, i would say continue on the path you've created for yourself. Consciousness grows with time and no one can predict accurately their own future and to believe so is childish. A true path cannot be mastered in one incarnation.
@@THEShogunBallistic No, possession in the astral conscious contact is not possession . It's nothing something that can be understood from a brief overview. i was also grown in afro-religious traditions as well as a member of European orders for years,, in a addition to practical alchemy and taoist yoga, for a long time. I know clearly the differences. When i say beginners, I'm talking about mastering preliminary levels so one move onto his books on evocations and quabbalah mysticism. Many don't make it past the first book because it's real work. Most that do have been an initiate for many, many incarnations. Bardon resisted disclosing this gnosis to the profane, but divine providence would have it no other way. It's meant for the coming age, most people at this time are not remotely ready for the great work.
I was able to spend all of my time practicing the lesson for 2 weeks. I was at the point where I was trying control my dreams. One evening after having a spiritual experience the night before in a dream, I just started speaking to whatever has been taking care of me. I said, "I know I probably have known you for thousands of years, but I don't remember you and that's why I don't love you. I know that you've been taking care of me this whole time." I began to cry. A feeling of deep emotions with a vibration that had come into me vibrated my body, then above me a voice said, " it's about time you realize that we've been taking care of you this whole time." Then around it more voices laughed as to confirm what was said." Slowly the vibration left my body from head to toe. I sat up on my bed and said, " were you supposed do that? Did you get permission from God? Are you ever coming back again?" I reluctantly told a friend of mine who was a Psychologist, I figured he wouldn't believe me, all he said was had I read the book that he had given me the day before, I said no. Then all he said was, read the book that I had given you. I started reading, and a few pages in the person had had the same experience. It blew my mind. If I had read the book prior to my experience one could say that I had been influenced, but I hadn't read it. This is my experience with practicing this book. I had felt abandoned because I knew that it had taken a lot for me to get into such an emotional state to manifest what I now know are my spirit guides. With that said I had stopped practicing. I'm going to begin to practice again. If anyone has had any experiences with these practices please tell me. If you have any questions I'm willing to do my best to help guide you as well.
Sometimes the subtitle is forgotten: "THE PATH OF THE TRUE ADEPT." Nothing less than perfection or mastery can be expected from a true adept. Therefore the harshness of its sentences, and the insistence on first finding balance and purification before embarking on hard magic, at the same time the practitioner will be elevated to the spheres of magic, evocation, and qabalah which without a foundation could bring mental imbalances in this and other lives. It's not for everyone, that's true.
One interesting pathway in this book is the tarot card itself. If you are struggling on any of the steps feel free to fall back onto meditation on the tarot card itself. Along with re-reading the intro theory on electric/magnetic.
From what ive read, certain choices in his wording is due to the fact that Bardon was persecuted by the Nazis and tortured to give up esoteric info. So he put certain barriers to stop them making progress
I have much the same attitude to this work. I hadn't realised that the paperback was expensive; I picked it up in Glastonbury for around £20 years ago, and like many others, I've started and stopped the steps many times simply because I couldn't get past a certain stage. Ultimately I think that it's fine to experiment with his method, try different parts and just see what happens. Not everything in life happens systematically and progress isn't always made in a linear fashion. Excellent review.
Merci beaucoup, une fois de plus ! Oh, et belle synchronicité puisque j'ai découvert votre vidéo un jour après avoir obtenu une copie de ce livre de Franz Bardon. Bien belles coïncidences que tout ceci !
This may sound a little crazy partially because I'm paraphrasing, but I heard someone explain the reason why he harped on getting everything right before moving ahead was because of the time and place that this book originally came out shortly after World War II ended and was trying to keep it out of the hands of negative/ evil influences ..or at least keep them from benefiting from the book
@robertscarpati6683 This invitation to belittle Bardon's requirements to complete a step has been propagated by Mark Rasmous and his most publicly exposed students (SixtySkills/Bob Smith and Jake Senn) and it's one of those things that Mark Rasmous got wrong. WW2 ended in 1945 and IIH was first published in 1956, when everything Nazi was amply decayed. The reason why Bardon gives strict requirements is in order to allow the student to build solid foundations, follow a balanced development and reduce the chances of unawaringly enter in a distorted path. A childish dismissal of requirements can result in an unaware egress into a path different than the one Bardon outlined (it's the case of Mark Rasmous), failure to be proficient in magical skills (SixtySkills/Bob Smith and Jake Senn. Ask them to show you clairvoyance. They can't.), sloppiness in advanced techniques (SixtySkills/Bob Smith is teaching QBL but can't perform it on the Physical level just to name the most obious limit), serious danger of twisting the path and establish strong ties with negative beings (Jake Senn is teaching Evocation in a way that is horrorific, ignoring every caution Bardon has been very clear about, inducing the practicioner to invite spirits INSIDE oneself (that is not Evocation but Invocation/Possession, explictly frowned upon by Bardon), and is completely ignorant about the way a spirit is actually evoked in semi-physical form, having never performed such an operation but he is nevertheless convinced he can teach about PME). My advice to you is that you carefully study Bardon's text (not the commentator, that have mostly distorted the teaching for one vanity or another), strive to meet the high standards and, if you don't reach them, at least avoid to delude yourself into thinking that those standards were not actually to be taken seriously. If you choose Franz Bardon as your teacher you are supposed to trust him. If you don't trust him then your teacher is not Franz Bardon but is Mark Rasmous, or Bob Smith, or Jake Senn or whoever believes he can rewrite IIH without being at the level of Master Arion.

Greetings. One point to bear in mind is that you should read the whole book and keep making progress with your magic diary. All the exercises has the same importance. Mark Rasmus also comments that perhaps this militarized method of making the system is done in such a way that those who follow it tend to fail, also given the circumstances of the time Bardon lived in, with the war and everything. In fact, it doesn't make sense to follow it like that, since the Akasha doesn't have time and space, and everything is interconnected.
I found this book in a kind of very long lasting state of “perfection” just love and connection with all things and just understanding things for no reason. Very pure. I stopped anything bad and even didn’t eat meat for a while. Did a type of yoga as well to maintain this state and stumbled upon this book and was able to do it easily. Belief/faith in oneself is a HUGE part of it. If you “know” the force is there for you then it is. Any doubts can push it away. From my experience. Also willpower is everything in my opinion in the beginning. Because if you have willpower you don’t need correspondences, you can face a candle or the sun or even just to the south and pull the fire element with pure will. You can look at a planet in the sky and with trained willpower fill your whole body or energy centers with it. Just knowing for sure there is energy there to be had. Fasting and discipline and practicing “a system of Caucasian yoga” before finding this gave me such an edge. I am significantly weaker and fatter and less disciplined now yet still capable. Just not at that level. Which is ok. It was extreme. But without it a doubt after learning from Sixty skills and then teaching on my own (in my own way) you do not need perfection at all. Just an inner faith and a little willpower.
this book is a kind of “mind map” to get you in resonance with real world teachers who know the path well and can transmit their wisdom, skill & understanding to you. it’s not a book that can be approached purely intellectually or linearly.
Concerning attention struggles: Bardon explicetly states some basic exercises/effects will just last seconds at the beginning - and that is just ok that way (and true to my experience). Just like the infamous 'micro habits' introduced some 50 years later... Not to rush anything is of more importance than perfection, which takes nothing (hehe) but time, discipline and patience - I think this point was missed in this review. And, as said, Bardon himself was a smoker. I can' remember he wrote about kicking that habit/ addiction (correct me if I'm wrong) As one will love the outcomes the progress in time and attention will be easier. In fact, to me the basic exercises in this book were a remedy to my spoiled attention span (though not going along with Bardon's way generally).
It is not a matter of ‘being perfect’. What Bardon teaches is the same as many other teachers have suggested: The first thing to do, is to ‘put your house in order’. Perfection is never mentioned in the book. However, if those teachings do not resonate with some, that is absolutely fine.
Bardon saved my life and the lifes of many around me. I now challenge you to get a review of Josephine Mc Carthy´s QUAREIA System....and also the initiation system of Karl Brandler Pracht!!!!

Similar to the counsels of perfection of Mouni Sadhu's otherwise wonderful books, which I balked at. Even in Tibetan Buddhism, for all their goal-seeking behaviors, perfection is never assumed.
On perfection (first of - shame on me for buying all of Franz's books and still not cracked the spines - sometimes life happens) [that aside] I surmise that perfection is met a la Abremelian "working" meaning separate your self from ALL to purify and then to not be forced to compare one self to others but only to the self. This is more doable than tryna please everyone in community e.g. the constant comparing of one self to this person that person etc... but then again I'm just yapping away random musings having not read the books. Guess I better get cracking! Thank you for the review. Great vid as always! 🤘😔🎸
His three books are great, i haven't worked his system yet BUT read the books. The Golden Dawn and Italian Traditional Witchcraft pretty much like Hoodoo we work with the Bible a lot and the saints and Angels etc use the washes, oils, Stings etc, the dusts, candles etc. and I love the Golden Dawn rituals from the Middle Pilllar, The Lesser Banishing ritual and the Boneless ritual along with many more things.
I have all three books in this series but I haven't even finished Initiation Into Hermetics much less started the other two. Bardon's writing is really hard for me to get into, mostly for the same reasons you describe.
beautiful works by beautiful mind. I have some his czech "original" texts (including the reviewing one), and also great work of his pupil Josef Drabek: An aid for introspection. if you come across it it is worthy any price 😊 mind changing book
YESSSS finally Initiation into Hermetics! After using this for many years, I added this as a source for a very lengthy paper on Karlheinz Stockhausen and his varied influences in Grad School, direct and indirect, in the context of his week long opera cycle, Licht!
btw, I have ADHD as well, and love the Bardon system! I just wait and wait and wait until it feels right to progress; it’s incredible practice to hyperfocus on a previously mastered skill! Taking EXTRA time to get thru this stuff paid off in spades! I was abt halfway through the text when I first encountered your channel 4 years ago-ish, but now I cycle the step 9 step 10 around and around, and managed to codify the technique of turning musical compositions into spells! Lolol I was heavy in your comment section around the time when my first composition-as-spell backfired on me, the piece, Crossing the Abyss, was so hypercharged it came to life 😅😅
I guess this is motive for the Bardon companion' books, or books that try to help with the system, Rawn Clarke's books being an example. I did not read it yet, but maybe I'll try...
Juat curious and I know it is off topic and perhaps personal but what do you do to work around the ADD? Years ago I saw an ethical doctor who prescribed the correct med at the correct dose and it worked great but I don't have that option anymore.....ADD does have its perks, particularly learning aspects of specific subject really thoroughly and becoming an expert of sorts but it is also is a huge pain in the rear especially in studying the occult. It slows a process down that is already slow by nature....Also people end up thinking I'm some kind of savant or the other end of the spectrum, an idiot. Any suggestions? Again sorry for the huge digression. Ironically I just purchased the book from this video and it is currently sitting on my "To read" pile.....
I think Bardon's element colors are based on the Tattvas, so it shouldn't be too uncomfortable for those who follow Golden Dawn, B.O.T.A., etc. Both of those orders incorporate the Tattva system and adhere to those colors.
I have the worst ADHD. I FINALLY got a doctor to give me meds. I'm far from perfect but I'll always aspire to conscious contact with the divine as defined by my 48 years of sailing these seas of cheese. Under the auspices of love. Make no mistake, I will always aspire to the highest of acceptance and understanding!
Holy wowza, I think I subscribed to you "in search of" your view on IIH - and thus just kept channel as a sort of news feed of other books(forgive me, I watch few vids - yet I know I like what I had seen hah). ~~ Haven't watched this one yet, about to! Trippy to see is all. I have high expectations, I've seen/read some great reviews that match quite a bit with how I feel. Time to review your review... :P
Considering it was written in the fifties it is very good ,covers the fundamentals with plenty of practical exercises, for training pre internet practitioners it must have been a godsend😊
I was wondering why I haven't yet seen a video on IIH on your channel, and now it makes sense. Different strokes for different folks. If it is not to personal, I am curious as to what system you study as the aphantasia is a major issue with step 2 of IIH not to mention ADHD? Also, thanks for the quareia recommendation, will be checking that one out as well 👍

I really related to this to this review. “Step one, be perfect!”Right? I picked this book up fairly early on in my occult journey. The dietary restrictions and fact that I’m a smoker alone were enough to tell me this probably wasn’t going to be a system I would be fully adopting. I also struggled my whole academic career with undiagnosed attention deficit issues; trying to figure out how to learn in environments that were not geared towards teaching a mind like mine. So I understand being unable to concentrate on things I found boring or did not resonate, and having people say: “you’re just not applying yourself…” I did however, find some things that were helpful in forming a broader understanding of hermetics and magick. I always appreciate the candor and sincerity you bring to your reviews. See you next time, Denis! Be well.

You have almost the exact same opinion as I do on his system. As you know, my path is helping the homeless specifically, and the wisdom i seek is for a human being that is in need of something a bit more subtle and patient. I also find his style to be a bit erring on the side of insisting upon perfection, so I never delved too deeply into it as a practical manual, though ive read it more than once and find his ideas to be so fascinating. Happy you finally read it, I was so curious what you would think of the differences between some others in the western magical tradition. Now go sell your copy for 8million dollars lol
Yes, it's good to know the consistency of bricks before you build a house but once you do, you build it to SPECIFIC PERSONAL FOUNDATIONS That's how I look at magical systems.
I think your second point is right-on. I tried IIH as a teen multiple times, never got anywhere. I came back to it as an adult with experience of living traditions and knowledge of the context in which IIH was written. At that point I found it very workable, but I honestly can’t imagine working it as a beginner without a teacher, because things can be said in a certain ways and come across differently. Also, some of his stuff is outdated and just of the era. The psychological stuff, the mirrors of the soul and the willpower “balancing” of the elements, are (in my oh-so-humble-opinion) are neither necessary or helpful, and one would be better served by some good psychodynamic therapy, or something similar.
Nice to see you feature this book, though your focus on perfection - which Bardon does not call for really shows a lack of understanding on this one. He simply asks you to do a before b. If people cannot achieve the step 1 requirements then I think they must be confused as to the requirements. Plus balance is the key to the book not perfection. We are to balance negative and positive qualities. Not sure if you were in a rush on this one but I think a very big misunderstanding on your part.
The GoM books (some of which are great, others... YMMV) always have a word to acknowledge people with aphantasia and give them a way to get through the rituals anyway.
Aphantasia is a big issue for me in this work. Have you looked into or heard of “image streaming”? I can’t vouch for it, but lots of people say it worked for them.
Thanks a lot for yet another very useful review dear Denis. You emphasizing the pitfalls of a suggested requirement to be perfect as lesson one could be a video on its own. I’m personally not interested in Franz Bardon whatsoever, I came to click like but I stayed for your statement!
Magic practice is already condescending and this sounds even more so. I know Josephine McCarthy thinks highly of him but As a neurodivergent I’ll just as soon skip this.
there are just too many things wrong with this system- fire is not an element, it is a chemical reaction, air and water are molecular compounds- not elements, earth i suppose - could be, but its way to general to be meaningful. this system ignores basic foundational chemistry and physics, it's steeped in imprecise vernacular and draws very heavily on borrowed eastern ideals which are repurposed to make this into something. it plays to romantic ideas of people who like the idea of using magic, which is basically fantasy for adults. its very likely Bardon had schizophrenia based on what we know about him, if he was genuine and not a scammer, which i dont think he was. Arthur C Clark said it best, 'magic is indistinguishable from any sufficiently advanced technology', technology also inclusive of mental processes and systems like CBT therapy or remote viewing. There is nothing in this system that cannot be gained by a deep understanding of modern science and/or neuroscience. I would respectfully pass on this as poorly plagiarized philosophy and badly written science.
In the book, Bardon specifically explains that the elements - water, fire, air and earth - do not refer to the physical elements (H2O, etc), but to their attributes. I am afraid this work is not for everyone, and if people are comfortable following other paths, that is absolutely fine.
For Heaven’s sake, Denis!!! Do you really have ADD?!? Goodness gracious! Then I suppose you know you’ll have to quit magic immediately, don’t you? You poor thing… 😉

@@Quareia My goodness... thank you! (But I'm only paraphrasing the ones who've done the work!)
Bardon was a chainsmoker...but he chainsmoked perfectly 😂

That's very interesting what are your sources? :o
He was persecuted before he wrote the books though
@niv4331 This is distorted information, from unexisting sources.
Read my comment to @robertscarpati6683 for more details.
Yes, wasn't he tortured by Nazis, and then years later died while in custody of Czech secret police? Wow, what a life...
I've been on Step One since 2010. Got it nailed though
All paths lead to the same end but some, like Bardon’s, take you closer.
@robertscarpati6683
This invitation to belittle Bardon's requirements to complete a step has been propagated by Mark Rasmous and his most publicly exposed students (SixtySkills/Bob Smith and Jake Senn) and it's one of those things that Mark Rasmous got wrong.
Was this in person or in a video somewhere? I'm curious to hear more about this interpretation.

Excellent review. Thank you for creating this for us.

Great reviews - I have had that on my list for a while but now I know that, like you, I am 100% not the target audience for that book!
this book is a kind of “mind map” to get you in resonance with real world teachers who know the path well and can transmit their wisdom, skill & understanding to you. it’s not a book that can be approached purely intellectually or linearly.
I think I'd have to set up base camp on the slopes of part 1, and spend forever gazing up at the mountain of perfection ☺️.
We requested, and Foolish Fish delivered! Many thanks!
Whew!!! He finally did it! Haha. Much love FoolishFish.
Concerning attention struggles:
Bardon explicetly states some basic exercises/effects will just last seconds at the beginning - and that is just ok that way (and true to my experience). Just like the infamous 'micro habits' introduced some 50 years later...
Not to rush anything is of more importance than perfection, which takes nothing (hehe) but time, discipline and patience - I think this point was missed in this review.
And, as said, Bardon himself was a smoker. I can' remember he wrote about kicking that habit/ addiction (correct me if I'm wrong)
As one will love the outcomes the progress in time and attention will be easier.
Danke für deinen Tip.
I believe he's already done a few videos on the Quareia system

Would like to hear your thoughts on Mastering Witchcraft by Paul Huson.

The best explanation of ADD....It is so frustrating as an adult...

@FoolishFishBooks ah yeah I saw that a little while ago. It's not happening :(
I really related to this to this review. So I understand being unable to concentrate on things I found boring or did not resonate, and having people say: “you’re just not applying yourself…”
I did however, find some things that were helpful in forming a broader understanding of hermetics and magick.

Hi Foolish Fish! Are you considering publishing a book on your own magick system?
i have this book in my library on line but i have not read it yet, theres 804 books a head of it, so wish me luck
hahaha! Oh boy, I can relate!
Can definitely relate with your initial challenges with approaching magic. Great review, appreciated!
Any books or practice that could help with aphantasia please?

Yes,yes,yes?
This doesnt work people forces it into their present situation
For Heaven’s sake, Denis!!! Do you really have ADD?!? Goodness gracious! Then I suppose you know you’ll have to quit magic immediately, don’t you?
