The regional manager of your company calls asking you to make a big transfer without the usual approval because it's time-sensitive. People fall for this all the time over the phone or even with a spoofed, similar or phished email address, and this is clearly convincing for a short amount of time for even a sceptical viewer.
yes, there have been papers on machine learning algorithms that can tell a deep fake from unedited footage a big percent of the time. this level of editing has been possible for years, its only a problem because its a powerful tool almost anyone can access.
@@simpleton7 The regional manager scenario doesn't work so well because you need to set up a recording session with the manager in the first place where you get his face from all angles an lighting conditions.
The Omegle thing would be super cool if you guys did one of those "Which celebrity do you look like?" quizzes first. Find an actor who has a similar face shape and bone structure. Would be interesting.
thankfully, it took the extensive facial scanning of Wren to even make this look as good as it did. It's not as mind bendy if you just take "celebrity" photos from around the web to program a mask.
Do you rememeber the dude who got caught in North Korea for tearing down a propaganda poster and came back brain dead? I'm not saying he did or he was set up, but just imagine this tech is used for that and you have no proof to save your ass. That's just scary.
@@hollywoodguy70 That's the pace of it's advancement is so scary. As it gets "better", less input material will be needed to create increasingly convincing deepfakes. They’re probably not real time (yet) but they still could be useful for any upcoming deepfake related projects.

@@steelbluesleepR Yep, I believe they call it a "capture volume." I remember seeing them do a bunch in the behind the scenes for Death Stranding, with the actor sitting in the center of a bunch of lights and cameras set up from like every possibly angle.

This was just about the funniest video you guys have ever produced. Not only was it amazingly informative, it really showed off the awesome culture at Corridor. Well done and thanks for sharing.
It's gotten pretty good as well. There was a site called "Not Jordan Peterson" where you could type in stuff and it would replicate his voice with scary accuracy. People kept misusing it to fake horrible stuff being said by him and then trying to post it online as "real," so it got shut down though. But it was a very interesting demonstration of where the technology currently is.
The implications of this technology are still scary as Hell. I remember some creep last year tried to blackmail schoolgirls with deepfakes of them in sexual situations. Imagine what might happen when this technology becomes more commonplace and easy to use.
@@Faizan29353 No need to worry? How much time and money will society have to spend following up with criminal complaints? Will everyone have equal access? This stuff doesn't happen magically. There's technology to defeat viruses but they can't keep up and stay ahead.
Actually if deepfakes get really common and easy then we just wont be able to use video as admissible evidence... not without deep analysis of the video. Any video of compromising integrity will just be dismissed as fake. You just wont be able to black mail people with video any more. It wont be that bad. The bad period will be when they are still hard to make, but very convincing, and the public still has little knowledge. But that period will only last a couple years at most imo. Probably 2023-2025. After that windows movie maker will probably be able to make deepfakes and also tell if a video has been deepfaked lol
@@baqcasanke video evidence has massively changed whether some crimes get prosecuted, and whether people get convicted. No more video evidence will mean fewer prosecutions and convictions for those crimes.

Niko has a really distinct presence and mannerisms. Personally that and the AI struggling with Wren's chin fuzz were the major tells otherwise I would definitely be fooled having never seen Wren in person.
I really wanna see them combine the real time face deep fake along with the voice deep fake. All you need then is some acting skills and you can practically become another person. Both awesome and terrifying
I've been following this project and the live version hasn't gathered a lot of community support, most people are sticking to the more accurate non real-time version. For someone to do this they'd need a NVidia GPU with 8+ GB Vram and ton of photos of the target person to train from (diff lighting and expressions ect) as well as a lot of time. Niko trained himself and Wren on three 3090's at the same time and took weeks, with more training needed and more settings to tweak. As cool as the live version is it needs a lot more data for training than the non real-time version they've been using before and doesn't look as good as deepfaking a video.
I think you need to use a high quality camera for the stream cam, then once the deepfake is comp'd in bump the quality down to stream quality with lower saturation and contrast. The quality difference in the webcam to the deepfake jumped at me and if you give a coating of compression as one unit it will sell the effect even more.
This is really good. Doing something like this in real-time and getting good results is really crazy. The biggest problem I notice that you didn't really mention is that Wren has really defined dimples and creases around his mouth. Niko has very little dimples, around his mouth. Especially since his facial hair hides it. Niko has a very definitive creasing around his eyes when his mouth moves. The deepfake was doing what deepfakes do, and just smoothed the creases and dimples away. It is a bit noticeable to anybody with experience doing deepfakes. It should be especially noticeable to viewers when any sort of shadow crosses in front of the person's face. It would likely create strange blurring patterns as the deepfake smoothed the faces' features. Another great video! I like the informative topics like this one the best!
I feel like the gamified version of this is having two identical people in a zoom call, and attempting to figure out which is the deep fake. The advanced version would be to find a set of twins willing to get a complete deepfake made of their combined data set, then having them plus a third in a call.
As much as I like Niko's optimism for what crazy things this could be applied to it is actually very scary too, if in the wrong hands, which at some point is inevitable. I image smear campaigns doctoring false incriminating videos or blackmail. Even if proven as a fake, you can't wipe away that first impression in some peoples minds.

This needs a second run but with Niko and Wren having the exact same haircut and facial hair to train the AI. And people need to be aware that this level is already possible on Highend consumer grade hardware.
@@baqcasanke the 3090 is what used to be called a 'titan' which is a 'prosumer' grade part, not quite quadro money, but above normal consumer hardware.
This technonogy needs a kind of special verification, like a proofed ID, so it can be identified when missused. There is so much possible as the wren/nico call shows
Hey Niko! I was thinking that you could speed up the training process by including an auxilliary GAN discriminator for the reconstruction function. I'm not sure what the current deepfake technology looks like exactly, I've had good results reconstructing data with autoencoders that used the internal features of a GAN discriminator as a reconstruction function. If the software doesn't use GAN-like losses (as I intuit due to the slight blurriness of the result), maybe trying that out will give a final boost to the decoder!
It depends on what you consider Corridor. I see that they got popular in their newer channel Corridor Crew with "VFX Artists React", which got viral and their channel got more famous to other people. But I remember times, where they shot films on their primary channel Corridor Digital (now known as simply Corridor), they still do, but not so much, compared to their regular content here. I would’ve loved it if after the reveal and the deepfake focuses on the other people there, that you guys would chant “WE ARE WREN,” in a robotic voice! Either way, incredible work as always!
The scary identity theft aspect of this aside (when it gets more advanced ofc) it'll be interesting to see just how good impersonations can get with this technology. Instead of getting new actors I wonder if we'll eventually start seeing more deepfakes in the future of popular dead actors, though I'd like to think you could opt out of something like that.

People fall for this all the time over the phone or even with a spoofed, similar or phished email address, and this is clearly convincing for a short amount of time for even a sceptical viewer.
Tbh even tho deepfakes are amazing, there's really no software needed, both context and regular vision are enough to understand if it's real or not
@@mk-ul5tv It feels very dangerous to just assume you will be able to tell
yes, there have been papers on machine learning algorithms that can tell a deep fake from unedited footage a big percent of the time.
this level of editing has been possible for years, its only a problem because its a powerful tool almost anyone can access.
This is a great idea!
It is insanely scary how fast this tech is advancing. Just imagine how crazy this world is gonna be when this stuff lands in the wrong hands.
thankfully, it took the extensive facial scanning of Wren to even make this look as good as it did.
The stage that it's currently in is already very convincing, and this is while the tech is still relatively yough. Imagine how accurate it will work in 2, 5, 10 or 20 years.

Isn’t anyone gonna talk about Wren’s super evil and goofy mockery moment at 13:28??? I LOVED IT SO MUCH
I remember when you guys were messing around with faceapp a couple years ago and Niko predicted this technology would be available in video format. Crazy!!
THAT INTRO ALONE WAS CRAZY! I LOVE YOUR GUYS' WORK SINCE THE GLITCHING MARIO!
Only the very tiny last bit (after the last cut) of the intro was the deep fake. The majority was wren.

Dude I can't even imagine what this would be like. It's a different level of uncanny valley, though better than just what I've known. Then having Wren pop up while you're so focused on trying to reconcile what is happening would probably make me pee myself.
Nice job!
As far as audio goes - I think you guys should look into Descript or Wav2Lip or other audio deepfake solutions that are out there (especially considering Wren’s interest in sound design). They’re probably not real time (yet) but they still could be useful for any upcoming deepfake related projects.
Really all they need is a sound board with audio clips qued up. With the lag using video chat i think it would be believable
real Wren peeking out behind the couch is comedy gold. What a wonderful gremlin of a man
It probably wouldn't be worth the work, but creating a rig that handles the lights and recording for deep-fake face referencing would be neat
Once deepfakes become more popular with movie studios and the like, that's probably something that's going to be made in a product that will be available for video/movie makers, and the public, to buy
They already have that for capturing assets for CG, actually.
@@steelbluesleepR Yep, I believe they call it a "capture volume." I remember seeing them do a bunch in the behind the scenes for Death Stranding, with the actor sitting in the center of a bunch of lights and cameras set up from like every possibly angle.
I truly love deepfakes but on the other hand it's also pretty scary!
Without softwares that will be able to automatically detect deepfakes, like countermeasures, yeah, it will be pretty fucking scary...

I can see this aging faster than we think. And then this becomes a kind of “Time capsule video”. Amusingly watching people getting easily amazed at such basic technology.
This was just about the funniest video you guys have ever produced. Not only was it amazingly informative, it really showed off the awesome culture at Corridor. Well done and thanks for sharing.

I'm kinda excited and scared about what the future hold

It's gotten pretty good as well. There was a site called "Not Jordan Peterson" where you could type in stuff and it would replicate his voice with scary accuracy. People kept misusing it to fake horrible stuff being said by him and then trying to post it online as "real," so it got shut down though. But it was a very interesting demonstration of where the technology currently is.
YO! Let's collab and make that Omegle video happen👀
LOOOOL

Now were going to see people replacing others in zoom calls, this is gonna be crazy
these guys are really good at what they do. no way the average person can pull this off realistically!
@@danidisco284 with enough work an average person can do it
I've been following this project and the live version hasn't gathered a lot of community support, most people are sticking to the more accurate non real-time version.
You actually got me with the deepfake at the beginning, I only saw it at the moment you said "can I fool you?"
I think they changed it midway through. You don't see the weird marks until that cut
Only that last shot when he says that was the deepfake, all the previous was him
The moment when he says "can I fool you" was the only shot with the deepfake.
@@isaimelendez9006 didn't thought ab that when I wrote this comment, thanks for letting me know tho!
@@LimiOttertje
What you saw was real. You got the deepfake the moment it was presented.
I'd call that more of a video turing-test than a gamified version, and yes, let's do it

6:09 aww, so cute 🥰 The best advertisement!
Yeah. If science fiction has taught us anything it is that technology won’t make the future better or worse, but more complicated
Any tech in wrong hands is bad. The hands are wrong, what do you expect.
I did immediately go back and do a double take that it wasn’t deep fake Wren during the whole intro.

If anyone knows, it would truly make my day to learn what it's called. Would be great background music for drawing. :)
After a couple of tries, Shazam managed to get it, despite the talking. It's called *Yi Nantiro - Blue Lantern* if anyone else is searching for it as well! :D

You guys are great. Great content and always entertaining. You explain and make it easier to understand even for a rookie like me. Thanks.
14:56 is JUST like that birthday party scene from "Signs". Genuinely still upsetting, even after re-watching it. The transition to WRENFACE is really smooth.
This needs a second run but with Niko and Wren having the exact same haircut and facial hair to train the AI.
And people need to be aware that this level is already possible on Highend consumer grade hardware.
Niko should’ve wore a beanie to cover his hair. And some sunglasses would sell the idea
the 3090 is basically consumer grade. the only difference would be the time it takes to do it
I mean that still doesn't change the fact that their head shapes and bodies are totally different haha! we'd need to get somebody plastic surgery.
Well having the money for a computer with 3 3090’s in it isn’t really at the “consumer” level quite yet lol. But i get your point....
@@baqcasanke the 3090 is what used to be called a 'titan' which is a 'prosumer' grade part, not quite quadro money, but above normal consumer hardware.
After this there is no way you guys shouldn't make a horror film based on someone on the screen is behind you the whole time.
The fact that it still took them a while to realize something was up is insane
16:10 and they say I am not a vfx artist haha no one else figured it out that quickly
Wren's pure joy at this prank is so wholesome.
This technonogy needs a kind of special verification, like a proofed ID, so it can be identified when missused. There is so much possible as the wren/nico call shows
Yeah, that's impressive and totally terrifying at the same time
You can always train an ai with enough voice clips to get that down but doing that live holy crap, we know it's possible.
Adobe could fake voices years ago
It's amazing that we are tlat the point where the deep fake itself is almost perfect, and it's just hair, mannerisms and face shape that hold it back

@TechConnor You are right!
One of the best content by corridor recently. It was amazing to watch everyone's reactions.😂
I am a veteran at this point (joined TH-cam in 2008) and honestly I miss the older times, where the main channel was the star back in those days. I see that you are even older, that is why I am curious, how do you mainly recognize those guys?
In the beggining you can see the subsurface scattering from the orange hat mesh disappear after a cut, but it’s a really good one.
I would’ve loved it if after the reveal and the deepfake focuses on the other people there, that you guys would chant “WE ARE WREN,” in a robotic voice! Either way, incredible work as always!

I love how they make this scary stuff so positive and awesome LOL Love it.
The intro was maaaad 🔥🔥🔥
Could you guys 3d scan your faces into models. Then, instead of projection mapping your textures, place a deep fake over your model?
The scary identity theft aspect of this aside (when it gets more advanced ofc) it'll be interesting to see just how good impersonations can get with this technology. Instead of getting new actors I wonder if we'll eventually start seeing more deepfakes in the future of popular dead actors, though I'd like to think you could opt out of something like that.
You can't opt out because you don't own your facial appearance. You can't because everyone looks a lot like someone else - sans the deformed.
bring it 99% of the way with a good impersonator, on makeup.
and then the remaining 1% is gonna take 3 times the budget, and 10 times the time to render.
Niko's hand curtain cut was suuuper smooth
Oh we're still in the fun phase of this tech...
Remember when Facebook was all just fun?
I could watch that scene at 17:31 in a loop, cause so many interesting emotions are expressed on their faces. Every rewatch I notice something new and it's really fun how their reactions transition into something totally different with basically every frame but in a way that makes so much sense!
