    so one morning I wake up for school when I’m in 10th grade and my dad said that he had a little surprise for me I had no idea what it was because I thought it was just going to be a normal every day school day. Well round about 11 o’clock or so he comes up to the school and picks me up and I asked him what we were doing and he goes oh guess what Alex we’re going to Baltimore to go see Dream Theater I was speechless.

    The term "god-tier" was created for these guys. They take peak performance to new levels, especially live. The studio is one thing. But to recreate a piece like this in a live setting is absolutely mind boggling. I say this as a musician of 30 years myself. We're not worthy...

    I call this synch rock - everything is like a precision Swiss time piece- most people don't appreciate this because it is like going to a buffet and putting everything on one plate

      Didn't ELP, Yes and Rush play the same 20 years prior? This is progressive Rock. Yes they are very precise. I do appreciate that they can play their compositions live just like they recorded them in the studio.

    The Dance of Eternity... in Metropolis part one the conclusion is love. When they finally created a part two due to fans inquiry for years I could not help but think the first was hard to follow up. In stepped a full L.P. and the piece "The Dance of Eternity" with over a hundred time signatures... unbelievable and as a musician - hard to follow - iow may get lost so easily... best be on your game. Truly masters.

    When I was growing up, I enjoyed things like Pink Floyd, rush, ELP, yes, Boston, and tool. But when I reached about sixth grader, so I discovered this band called dream theater. And they showed me just how much you could do with progressive metal. Before then I thought there was kind of a limit to it to where you could only be quieter. But Dream Theater is like nope wrong Alex.

    Hi Guys , I can't believe you have the dvd and haven't watched it yet. If you don't put it on soon Nick I have a feeling Lex is gonna do it when you are not there. Lol I love watching live concerts and have so many now in my collection. I recently bought only a couple of weeks ago, "Steve Hackett - Genesis Revisited Live Seconds Out & More" [ 2 dvd's + 2 cd's ] Incredible to watch and hear. The lead singer is Nad Sylvan who sounds like a cross between Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. [ yes you heard me correctly ] I mean what a find for Steve ! Wow ! The set list is stunning ... Firth of Fith / Suppers Ready / The Cinema Show / Carpet Crawlers / Dance on a Volcano among them, as well as solo tracks from Steve's albums. You need to find time to watch the dvd concerts you have. Put a list of movies you want to watch on strips of paper + a few concerts. Scrunch them up and put in a container.... When ready put your hand in and pull out what to watch. Don't forget the popcorn. Oh and ... Prog Rock rules ok ! [ stick Pink Floyd Pulse in that list to watch hmm ? ] 😀👍 Byeee Jim X

    Jordan who? Oh Spider fingers!! As you know it's early days for me and Dream Theater, but I'm definitely up for more opportunities to hear what they've got. Very impressive technically of course, and in such control of everything, now I'll be looking for more melody in the future. Are there any old reactions you did of DT that you recommend? Thanks guys xx

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the thing Richard,
      Most people think of DT for their EPICS, but they have MANY melodic tracks that focus on the "song", and the band holds back on their virtuosity. The album this track comes from; "Metropolis: Scenes from a Memory Part 2" has a few tracks that are VERY melodic, in-between the epics and the technical tracks (which helps tell the story of the _concept_ album).
      Every DT album has their share of melodic/song focused tracks :).

  • @MisterWondrous
    @MisterWondrous ปีที่แล้ว

    That's not really fair, because they probably practiced that. And you do realize there were too many notes. They could have gotten that done with half as many...and their fingers would not now be on ice.

    100 points for your faces Alexia 😃 having heard this song so many times studio and live version since 1999 and having seen this specific video 6 - 8 times I could completely concentrate on your faces ... Nick following the song because of knowing it and you experiencing one surprise after the other. That's one of the reasons why I watch reaction videos : re-discovering my favourite music through the ears and the eyes of others... that's the big fun of it all 😆👍
    I guess latest by now you understand why I went to their concerts 18 times since 2000 and I feel a bit sorry for you, because Astonishing was the "worst" .. it's been a concept album with more than 10 characters, and James had to sing them all. That can't work .... compared to this AYREON's concept album are masterpieces and you should see the list of singers he's gonna have on stage, when they play another one of his albums in September ... the list is too long to put it here😵‍💫
    Coming back to Dream Theater: this is not on Score, I'm sure others mentioned this already ... but you are ready for Score, and if you do a single song reaction, there can be only 1 song: Metropolis Part 1 ... played with the orchestra... I couldn't stop watching them shredding their violins cellos etc and some even had time to headbang ... simply awesome ... I hope you can watch that soon. And I can tell you, for somebody having grown up with the prog of the 70s and looking for some harder stuff, Dream Theater was the NONPLUSULTRA for a very long time 🤘❤

      But they DO have those songs. People ALWAYS focus on their EPICS, but never their shorter songs (the less than 7 min. tracks). They have plenty of melody and focus on the "song" because of the lyrical content, and even Mike Portnoy (not in this video, this is the later era of DT with Mike Mangini) pulls back on his drumming when the track calls for it.

    Nick & Lex . . .
    I'm shocked that there are only 20 comments and 734 views 🙁.
    I'll blame Mothers Day Weekend, yet go figure . . . I met a couple at work tonight; the guy was wearing a *Wintersun* shirt, the gal, a *Meanstreak* shirt. "Meanstreak" is a band made-up of females that play Metal, and 3 members are married to Dream Theater members. I told them about your show as well as talking all things Prog Metal (and Rock & Metal), and the woman agrees with you about "LaBrie", Lex :P. But they both still love the band. I hope to hear back from them soon, and I hope you have 2 new members of LaFamilia 🙂.
    Note: this DT Concert was from "Breaking The Fourth Wall" in Boston (2014). The DVD I sent you "Score" is with Mike Portnoy and the 1st time they played with an Orchestra (with the astounding version of "Octavarium", but does not contain; "Dance of Eternity/Instrumedley") from 2006 at Radio City Music Hall, NYC.
    Also see previous comment for the video of Portnoy counting-off all the changes :).
    - Its great too that Lexi is getting into the complex stuff, but she will have to hear more of their _direct_ "Song" oriented material where they are more melodic and hold back the virtuosity.
