"the loopholes you have to jump through". A very revealing phrase in an unconvincing effort to justify working at the heart of Murdoch's empire and the culture it engendered, elevated and fed off
It's quite a clubby interview, as illustrated by the revolving door from which Gordon Smart worked at the Sun and now the BBC. And why does he keep calling people who work for the Sun "journalists"? You're a journalist, or you work for Sun. You can't be both at the same time.
I liked how most of the episode established that the media (in its various forms) has more power than politicians now. Then they asked Gordon whether it was the case and he claimed not.
Were it not for our celebrity obsessed culture, including the culpability of journalists past and present, Brand would have been just another know-all gobshite, the sort found in every town/pub and avoided, with a groan, by those who know him.
Saying " i m a well educated, well mannered, ethical guy "....self proclaimed is always suspicious...he was there. Now he talks, using the airtime to say how well educated he himself is...weird..like Russell he speaks in this polished way but not 1 % of Russell s charisma...jalous ?? He was right then right there
He just seems (fake) to protect him self and his image / say all the right things( but worked at the sun for that long and didn’t understand the papers agenda or position in society)…. And deflect anything negative from his past roles.. Fake False and shady. Russel brands behaviour was created through people and institutions that this guy worked for and stood for! This guy would have loved mixing and hanging out with Russel for sure. Shame he didn’t speak truth but guess he’s protecting him self but still shady stay out of it if u don’t want look bad.
This guy reminds me of Brand in a way- he was embroilled in unethical behaviour, now he's a family man 'repents' and has come out the otherside- now he is being unethical in another way. Brand may well be a thoroughly unpleasant human being, but we have to maintain innocent until proven guilty, we can't have a world where anonymous accusations are enough to inflict punishment on someone, demonetising them etc. Freedom of speech is crumblng and people will use situations like this to push through laws that will diminish it even further.
I believe the Times/Channel 4 or whoever planned this takedown have much more up their sleeve than they're making out...They're just waiting untill it goes to court then they'll pull all the aces out..They reckon they've spent 4 years investigating this and they probably have a truckload of accusers queuing up for a court day...
@@Dimple_5 I dont think thats true- i think people are also defending the principle of innocent till proven guilty- such as Peter Hitchens- who in no way can be considered a fan of Brand! I don't think we have seen much evidence of Brand being a criminal yet- just being a degenerate. What evidence have you seen so far? There has to be a proper process. How can the Times be 100% sure? Are newspapers really so reliable? You're going on the word of a weak minded, immoral ex editor of the Sun?
This interview confirms you should leave it to the courts...especially colleagues and friends should shut up until then. Very disrespectful towards a colleague you all were close to and apparently loved to be around him
Newsflash. Culture changes. It develops over time and what is socially acceptable adapts and morphs. It’s the reason why your grandparents will say something and you have to correct them and say you can’t say that anymore. It’s the reason your parents are constantly two years behind with slang. The only difference is that now, because of the internet everything is forever, and people are being held accountable decades later for something that they have evolved and grown from. All of us are guilty of of it in some fashion. We might have used to joke about things we don’t joke about anymore, dress a certain way that would now be laughable, engage in behaviour that we look back at and wince. Now this isn’t to say that serious criminal allegations shouldn’t be investigated due to the time they were in, of course they should, but there needs to be an acknowledgment that certain things were a product of their time and when it was happening it was socially accepted. We learn we grow.
Murdoch makes people like Trump and cancels them at his convenience....fox news one of the many creations costing him billions for creating narratives with global impact, putting people in place who are pure mobsters...how can anyone want to work for Murdoch. Worse ,who wants to work in the tabloid world...strange ambition.
This is ridiculously irresponsible, RB was accused, if we talk as if he is convicted the legal process ceases to have any meaning. This conversation alone is enough to enable RB lawyers to argue for the case to be dropped. What are you doing? Is this just entertainment??
If it does go to court, it will most likely be for accusations not mentioned in the original documentary/story, thats what I think happened with Harvey Weinstein,
Wait wait wait. Here we have s guy saying 'it was a culture that I was caught up in' whilst condemning Russell Brand's actions. At which point will be he man enough to see himself in the mirror of Russell Brand?
it's easy to say in hindsight you should have said something but these guys were in their 20s and millionaires in the '90s which was a debaucherous decade, not justifying anything that brand may be accused of but you don't have Noel Gallagher and Matt Morgan trying to salvage their image and disassociating with Brand but that's what you get with a reporter for The Sun
Oh come on...this is very very gossipy talk...what else to expect..these " journalists " 😂😂..throwing each other under the bus..what else is new if you work in a sleezy business
An excellent podcast! Never was the biggest fan of Gordon back in his Sun heyday but he seems to have matured and his insights into Brand are hardly surprising but very telling. We've certainly known about his predations since Katherine Ryan tried to out him in 2018, and his establishment legal team threatened her. Glad the Times and C4 finally had their legal ducks in a row to publish/broadcast and the alleged victims can finally get some closure. Very brave of them to come forward too give the levels of horrendous vitroil they've been (predictably) subjected to from the usual knuckle-draggers.

Actually a surprising number of journalists defended him when he was on 'their side' and they felt they needed someone to sway the apathetic young voter.
They should have went forward to the law. Channel 4 were so concerned about the victims that they produced this 'exposing' documentary to show the world what Brand is like but at the same time have compromised any chance of a legal prosecution. The fact the documentary lasted 80 mins and there was only probably 1 or possibly 2 provable claims showed that the agenda was more than the evidence to back it up. To tell you the truth I've never been a fan of Russell Brand and especially at his height of fame on mainstream TV and radio and found him intolerable to watch and listen to. And it would not surprise me if all these allegations are true. He's definitely a narcissistic individual and a bully and those traits are certainly applicable to that of someone accused of his crimes but I'd much rather have him prosecuted in a court of law rather than trial by media.
Like the Savile phenomena; a creep hiding in plain sight, surfing the tide of supplicant media. Brand looks like such a dinosaur now, still he has his millions to count as his infamy fades.
Why legitimise a person like this? Sorry, I can't call anyone who's worked at the Sun a 'journalist'. This pod is sinking into relativism. So disappointing.
Hmmm a missed opportunity to get some real insight into the much buried Dan Wootton story. After all his career was similar. Strangely GB news is still monetised despite more mounting evidence than RB..........
Interesting that he claims Brand is a sociopath or psychopath, which is purely an opinion of someone with no qualifications in the field and they both lap it up without any scrutiny, and then goes on to say that a medical addiction to a drug is different to a behavioural addiction - and Maitlis is equally clueless about addiction, so they are fully aligned on that. Tell me how the "criminal investigation" is going...
And what about all the women who used to "throw themselves" at Russell Brand? And that this is well known (as mentioned here) in celebrity circles? Well let's not hold any of those women to account!! Russell has been pretty transparent about his past behaviour and has apparently changed. Shouldn't this mean that we should change our view of all this?
“Hold them to account”? What exactly are you alleging these women did, other than consensual acts? It’s the stuff that Brand is alleged to have done that WASN’T consensual that has landed him in so much trouble.
Amazed that this editor is also a psychiatrist/ psychologist and able to diagnose RB with personality disorders. Not even pulled up by the interviewers. Shame on you.
Kim James, My comment exactly. Who is he to diagnose. It’s farcical. Like you I was waiting for them to challenge that and out a stop to it. Free speech is one thing but to label with such confidence and conviction say ‘rb is a psychopathic narcissist is unacceptable, improper.

Brand as facade/cliche simply took what the Music Biz historically had kept for itself - the drink/drugs/groupie exploitation culture and put it in front of TV Cameras as light entertainment. He's just one more high profile stomach-turner who could exploit his good fortune, and no doubt continues to do so.
Consider this - UK celebrity culture has a questionable line going back to Savile. Look at Celebrity Juice over the past few years. Holly Willoughby joking with Keith Lemon about him 'coming on her face' and his many references to her 'bush' which she indulges , guests Susanna Reid describing 'licking other women out' as a 'special skill' and Amanda Holden talking about '69' are openly available on youtube and itv2 catch-up. The only guest who looked uneasy was Christine Bleakley when Lemon referred to her 'not being able to walk for a week' if he got hold of her. This 'frat boy' climate is/was/has been encouraged since at least the 1970s [ eg Tiswas into OTT ] and the pressure on women to humour it and audiences to laugh along is intense. Poor old Russell must have got some mixed messages or what? Brand is clearly a problem & history shows he's not the only one

Nah. He's just a narcisist playing the part of a massiah, he knows he's not a messiah, he's just playing the part and laughing at his followers.

Quite possibly one of the best interviews I've ever seen. Gordon comes across as a very transparent guy. Fascinating on so many levels.
Courtney Love has publicly said she rejected Brands advances (apparently they are friends still) but also went on the record about a fling with Steve Coogan, what are the details that he does not want to say??
The time of celebrities is over.
It’s what we celebrate
Were it not for our celebrity obsessed culture, including the culpability of journalists past and present, Brand would have been just another know-all gobshite, the sort found in every town/pub and avoided, with a groan, by those who know him.
Jimmy Saville was an open secret.
When reporters say "So and so denies the allegations", it must be very tempting to add "but they would, wouldn't they?"
He was right then right there
An intelligent interview which is so nice to see! Shame about the less intelligent comments!

No, Russell Brand's behaviour was created by Russell Brand.
He still sticks up for the big boss and his son.
Surely 'freedom of speech' extends to people being able to make their own person mind/opinion up on what Brand has or has not done?
Yes!
yes definitely@@MrBarry465
I'm sure if you dug into any one of those 3 panelists you'd find some skeletons in their closet as well.
That’s too broad a statement, Rose and Fred West had skeletons, literally, there’s a sliding scale.

Awesome interviewee. And great questions.
This interview confirms you should leave it to the courts...especially colleagues and friends should shut up until then.
Very disrespectful towards a colleague you all were close to and apparently loved to be around him
I agree that it should be left to 'the courts' and that the truth is unconditionally revealed...but I fear that it may never reach the courts.

Working for Murdoch should be illegal
Murdoch should be illegal.
They talk about bad behaviour in the past, like people are all well behaved now !
Start with David Koresh, add a healthy dollop of PT Barnum, and a dash of Charles Manson.
Scientology is what connects them to Trump and Epstein
They're also all Jesuits
the more I see of Brand the more i'm getting the whole Jim Jones/Koresh cult vibes!
Also a hilarious Freudian slip “the loopholes you have to jump through”!
Very tongue in cheek. Love your humor Lesley.❤❤❤
Totally agree.
Much better articulated than my own similar comments.
If he has serious concerns about other people why not go to the police? Its obviously STILL going on
The fact that the instructions protected brand is as bad as brand behaviour.
His art teacher in high school had been a member of Wet wet wet??? No way!! That's wild
Poor, decent guy....at all happened around him, bless.
Give him a break, he’s a creep………gives himself a pass. Hypocrite……
Whats unsettling is that you celebrated Russel Brand in the past, and now it’s inconvenient; you condemn him.
He's been credibly accused of serious crimes by multiple women in different countries over a decades-long timespan
Murdoch empire was and still is the king maker of Uk politics, Blair, Cameron, Boris, next Starmer will be anointed.
Brilliant investigative journalism? In the tabloid world....is this a ' cover all our behinds ' interview ?
This is ridiculously irresponsible, RB was accused, if we talk as if he is convicted the legal process ceases to have any meaning. This conversation alone is enough to enable RB lawyers to argue for the case to be dropped. What are you doing? Is this just entertainment??
Right!!! All double speaking, gaslighting BS!!
If it does go to court, it will most likely be for accusations not mentioned in the original documentary/story, thats what I think happened with Harvey Weinstein,
Gordon comes across as pretty genuine and he’s very open about his time at the tabloids in this interview.
Brand belongs in prison not just demonotized
A great insight into a world I, along with many others, know exists but know almost nothing about. A compelling interview.
Im sure a lot of people thought he was a creep but because he was left wing at the time he was given a free pass by MSN and toted as cool
Claiming this was an episode in showbiz history is missing the wider truth ; lying and narcissism is now the norm in the public space.
Why should we trust a tabloid journalist??
I think we all know who should be investigated
A fascinating interview.
we need Russel Brands ground breaking journalism back on air -- instead of this idiot from the Sun
Wait wait wait. Here we have s guy saying 'it was a culture that I was caught up in' whilst condemning Russell Brand's actions. At which point will be he man enough to see himself in the mirror of Russell Brand?
I enjoy all these podcasts
it's easy to say in hindsight you should have said something but these guys were in their 20s and millionaires in the '90s which was a debaucherous decade, not justifying anything that brand may be accused of but you don't have Noel Gallagher and Matt Morgan trying to salvage their image and disassociating with Brand but that's what you get with a reporter for The Sun
noughties not 90s
“The loopholes you have to jump through”!
Ha yes, I noticed that as well. Not hoops, loopholes!
Oh come on...this is very very gossipy talk...what else to expect..these " journalists " 😂😂..throwing each other under the bus..what else is new if you work in a sleezy business
So you've invited one of his enablers, cheer leaders and profiteers to talk about what a narcissist Brand was. Hmmmmm. OK.
Asking if he knows other victims??? Watch your boundaries lady
"There's nothing I could do about it now".
Really? Do you honestly think that?
An excellent podcast! Never was the biggest fan of Gordon back in his Sun heyday but he seems to have matured and his insights into Brand are hardly surprising but very telling. We've certainly known about his predations since Katherine Ryan tried to out him in 2018, and his establishment legal team threatened her. Glad the Times and C4 finally had their legal ducks in a row to publish/broadcast and the alleged victims can finally get some closure. Very brave of them to come forward too give the levels of horrendous vitroil they've been (predictably) subjected to from the usual knuckle-draggers.
C4 who enabled his behavior
Absolutely, applauded and turned a blind eye. They were 100% complicit. @@soulfireonfire6423
Adding to that online fury were widespread anecdotes of social media users being swarmed by Depp fans on Twitter if they spoke critically of the actor or even just sympathetically towards Heard. While the overwhelming theory is that Depp’s team employed the use of fake accounts in Russia (a.k.a. “bots”) to boost support for the actor on social media, a new study reportedly suggests that’s not entirely the case. According to Bot Sentinel, yes, an “organized campaign of widespread targeted harassment,” but there were actual people behind the attacks.
According to the full report, which you can read here, the harassment campaign was described as “one of the worst cases of cyberbullying and cyberstalking by a group of Twitter accounts that we’ve ever seen.” Bot Sentinel also concluded that Twitter failed to act accordingly to protect users.
“It’s our opinion Twitter didn’t do enough to mitigate the platform manipulation and did very little to stop the abuse and targeted harassment,” the report stated. “Twitter essentially left the women to fend for themselves with little to no support from the platform.”

Fascinating thank you. ❤
Like the Savile phenomena; a creep hiding in plain sight, surfing the tide of supplicant media. Brand looks like such a dinosaur now, still he has his millions to count as his infamy fades.
In the intro monologue. The brummy accent is strong!!
No sound!
Why legitimise a person like this? Sorry, I can't call anyone who's worked at the Sun a 'journalist'. This pod is sinking into relativism. So disappointing.
Brand didn't throw his dog down the stairs. At least get those details correct, it's written in his book.
Yeah he kicked it down the stairs.
Hmmm a missed opportunity to get some real insight into the much buried Dan Wootton story. After all his career was similar. Strangely GB news is still monetised despite more mounting evidence than RB..........
“ . . . Managing Rupert Murdoch’s interests . . .” Says it all.
Brilliant interview
This guy is part of the problem and this a poor attempt at deflection and obfuscation
More like the Richard and Judy show
Interesting that he claims Brand is a sociopath or psychopath, which is purely an opinion of someone with no qualifications in the field and they both lap it up without any scrutiny, and then goes on to say that a medical addiction to a drug is different to a behavioural addiction - and Maitlis is equally clueless about addiction, so they are fully aligned on that. Tell me how the "criminal investigation" is going...
come on, rupert made politician deny climate catastrophy, that's on him
And what about all the women who used to "throw themselves" at Russell Brand? And that this is well known (as mentioned here) in celebrity circles? Well let's not hold any of those women to account!! Russell has been pretty transparent about his past behaviour and has apparently changed. Shouldn't this mean that we should change our view of all this?
….doesn’t mean in amongst all that consensual legal behavior that he didn’t still commit serious crimes
“Hold them to account”? What exactly are you alleging these women did, other than consensual acts? It’s the stuff that Brand is alleged to have done that WASN’T consensual that has landed him in so much trouble.
What about them?
You took the diggers money, you take the consequences.....
Could try asking Russel…
Now we have cancel culture, extreme gender politics, critical race theory, thought police censure...
Race doesn't exist, YT man created that fake socio-constructed...
He has bad karma
You sound disappointed
So some progress has been made.

Amazed that this editor is also a psychiatrist/ psychologist and able to diagnose RB with personality disorders. Not even pulled up by the interviewers. Shame on you.
You might like HG Tudor’s conclusion video of RB.
Kim James,
My comment exactly. Who is he to diagnose. It’s farcical. Like you I was waiting for them to challenge that and out a stop to it.
Free speech is one thing but to label with such confidence and conviction say ‘rb is a psychopathic narcissist is unacceptable, improper.

You must attend a very special and expensive university to learn what a narcissist w/sociopathic traits is and does.
It’s top secret.
However, you must have a working frontal lobe.
The examples he provides sound more like a case of poor impulse control as a result of ADHD. And this is a condition RB has admitted to having
What’s the difference between a non sociopath with ADHD and a sociopath with ADHD .
Start there.

"Victoria is an incredibly meticulous, diligent hard working human being," ...sure. Maybe. But she edits the Sun- she's a monster feeding on hatred and resentment.
So you decided to get a gossip columnist formerly employed by Rupert Murdoch just to get a bit of balance.
Alrighty then.
Too many words, where do these people find peace, constantly talking? Knitting, baking, fishing. Pottery? This isn't journalism, it's gossip and name dropping. Shaun is dead in the head. He thinks he's wonderful.
Great interview!
