      U67 over TLM 67...but I’m not paying that much for a mic. The u87 has too much air in the top end. The 67 mics still sound dull to me though. The TLM 193 is the most modern sounding mic IN EXISTENCE...plus it is very “flat” so you can really tailor your mixing to your liking.

      I have used many vintage 67's and am a bit of a connoisseur . My warm audio 67 is actually good. It is the only mic I have not sent back from them. However, my Soyuz 017 is my favorite microphone, bar none. I hear the tube mod for the TLM67 us quite good. Enjoying your channel!

    I think it’s more that vintage mics are OVERRATED 😂 …the prices make no sense for what you’re getting. Would love to try the TLM 67 because I’m blown away by my brand new Neumann M-149. Sounds so much better to me than the vintage Neumann U47 I rented from Blackbird, and even at $5K new it’s still 1/7 of the price of an original U47 😦

    I have both a modern re-issue 67 and a TLM 67. After the re-issue burned in after about 6 months. Its pretty amazing close to the TLM. When new the U67 was brighter. You are absolutely right about the TLM. For less money and simpler maintenance the TLM is kinda hard to beat. Thanks for doing this comparison!

    Dude I just watched a Neumann shootout and that mic stuck out to me amongst many vintage neumanns... next day, you upload this video. It's definitely underrated. To me, it sounds a little more usable for modern vocals because of the increased midrange response.

    Very similar. They did a killer job emulating it without tubes. I mostly hear a subtle midrange push on TLM but ultimately still smooth low end and high end. Impressed! 😍

  • @thumbody1

    The intro was the vintage U67. I heard that "sizzle" you described. It also had the transparency thing that tube mics have over FETs too. That's hard to describe because it's not a frequency or dynamic range thing. It's a clarity thing. It's very very subtle but it's there. Still, the TLM was great without a doubt. I'd like to hear a comparison between it and a U87Ai just for reference.

    Amazing mics, both of them! You should try to put them against Warm Audio’s WA67 and Advanced Audio CM67SE. From what I’ve heard, there’s as much a difference between 2 vintage U67 than between them and the real deal. It would be a very popular video I think!

    I'm kind of shocked at how much forward the mids are on the TLM. I think if you put a certain type of a singer on these that could really belt it out the Vintage U67 would be slightly more forgiving in the mid-range. You'd possibly use less compression. Great content as always Colt!

    • @gmichaelhall
      @gmichaelhall 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a spot on assessment. The TLM 67 with an experienced talent that knows how to self compress at the mic in combination with the TLM 67's mid compression at the capsule is a fantastic sound that requires very little help in post. Hope I said that clearly.
      The necessary cut is at 1.6khz, maybe a dB, but that's probably a move to make on many mics ime

    Great video, Colt! On the acoustic guitar example I felt the most difference between the mics. The vintage mic had a lot more robust and presence on the mids. The TLM sounded boomier and with enhanced high frequencies. It sounded hollower than the vintage in the low mids and mids. At least that's what I heard. But as you said, this is something that could be eq'ed. As far as underrated, I feel the U89 and TLM170 are probably more underrated... But they are also more expensive. Great video! Big fan.

    Used both of these interchangeably in my studio for years, sometimes my vintage one is just too noisy for the source, so TLM fits the bill nicely in those cases. To me, the high end is “tougher” on the vintage tube mic, and the lows are more solid… But just by a hair.

    Great comparison! The first time I used a Neumann in the studio I realized why they are so revered. All of them sound great. I have a U77 which was the model made for 1 year after the U67 with a FET and T-12 power before going to the U87 with phantom. The 77 has Same capsule as the U67 but more transparent due to being tubeless so prob similar to the TLM67? Anyway, I love the thing and very different from my Gefell UM70 (also astonishing mics which is no surprise cos they were once the same company) great work.

    The way I look at gear is that either can get you great tone as long as you’ve got a great source and you’re a competent engineer. The difference between the two would not be the reason why something didn’t sound as good as you wanted. It reminds me of statistics class when the +/- overlaps and you say there is not statistically significant difference between the two.

    The highs/mids on the U67 are so creamy. It complements the female vocals so very well, but I reckon the TLM67 would work better for deeper male voice as it has a bit more intelligibility while still retaining a smooth high-end.
    It's the mic I plan to get for my voice overs and will contrast my MKH416 (a brighter, more crisp mic) perfectly for different types of voice over work. I reckon this will do wonderfully for narrations and longer form content whereas the MKH416 has that punchiness which is great for certain types of commercials or corporate work I've done. Of course, I don't know for certain and I'd love to find out. It just reinforces my desire for the TLM67.

    I think the intro was done with the TLM 67 first and at the switch, changes to the U67. The difference I noticed being a less pronounced mid range and a more "even response" after the switch. Wow! You just sold me a tlm67! I did a blind test and prefered the tlm. I do think both are fantastic though. Maybe the u67 has a bit more character, feels a little more edgy, as if all her words were a litle more pointy in a way. Might be cool to have somethings sound more „special“. But overall i thought the tlm sounded more even and ballanced and i prefered that in the end. Very cool, especially with that price

  • @rocnroll1715
    @rocnroll1715 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    For the price difference you can't beat it. I'm still on a sub 200.00 microphone and hope to one day afford a nice tube microphone U47 or TLM49. My journey in recording is like a newborn, but so far I've realized that getting a good sound form a guitar,bass,keyboards etc is way easier and less expensive than getting a good vocal sound which really the foundation or a good vocal sound starts with a good entry level microphone that still cost as much as most all my other instruments ,lol, but that is the nature of the desire to chase that tone,,that color.

    I bought a Peluso P67 last year and it's by far my favorite mic for vocals. Looking for a chance to try it on acoustic guitar and mandolin. The 67 design topology is excellent all around I think.

    Hey man! How do you think this mic would sound on a male vocalist who sings and screams. Over a dense mix? Do you think it would capture the screams well? I’ve tried a few mics where the highs are too present with the screaming. Help!!

    I was about to buy a U87ai and they had this TLM67 and I said the same thing…I’ve never heard anyone use it or talk about it. If it’s an affordable version of the $8,000 - $16,000 U67 why do more people not have it when it’s only like $2,500.

    I totally agree! I absolutely love it.I do Voiceovers and this is my favorite from the 7 mics i have in my studio. Combined with a GAP pre73 premier or the UA710 is a wonder!

    That 67 sounded scooped compared to the TLM, who know where is the **true**. The result is better on vintage for guitar and i would prefer the TLM for her voice. Thanks

    First I would like to say I love the quality of you videos. I remember when you kinda just started so again love the great quality you put out. Second of all the singer Haley wow she most likely sounds great on most mics. Lastly I must say I prefer the newer one. The vintage has its own mojo but not like “oh I hate one vs the other.” But I doubt I would pay the money for the vintage one.
