I mean an evil spirit. He was it seems a very intelligent man. But very evil it also seems and there is an Egyptian pyramid in the background which is related to darkness and the devil and hierarchical systems of oppression, crooked scales which the One True God hates, and the unbridled tyranny excess consumption and greed of capitalism. He even condescends to the interviewer while speaking about divine condescension toward man. Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. He’s speaking of another deity here and it’s the serpent. He seems a man of high ego and probably a very wilful and stubborn man at this and a carnal man and if a man should make an animal and a beast of himself and chooses curses and death over life what choice is there than for him to be bridled by what this man calls divinity. He may have very interesting thoughts to impart but it seems he led a life of excess and sin. He’s spreading a false doctrine here about brahman. He’s demon possessed and he can’t even quell the condescension for a televised interview. He’s channelling a dark and evil spirit at best here.

My friend gave me Campbell's book, "The Power of Myth," (published concurrently with this series hosted by Bill Moyers). Over the years I come back to it (and to these episodes from the PBS series) and I reflect on the passing of time, on the constancy of my seeking unity with the Universal Principle. // I am very fortunate to have had peak experiences in my life (as per Maslow) and to know their significance in the stream of days, months, years that I have lived. Those experiences have given me verification that the timeless is very real. Beyond the veil of daily life's seeming importance there is our true reality, always there if we allow ourselves to be present in a real sense.

I've sent him multiple small clips over the past 5 years on JC via YT, but he wept to me over the phone this week in appreciation of Chief Seattle's letter. As a casual fan myself, I recommend watching and/or reading Chief Seattle's letter, and pretty much anything Mr. Campbell references in this lengthy interview. Chief Seattle's (or more correctly "Seathl") Letter to Washington:
"The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?
Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people.
We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man all belong to the same family.
The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred. Each glossy reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father.
The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst. They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give the rivers the kindness that you would give any brother.
If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life that it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.
Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.
This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.
One thing we know: our God is also your God. The earth is precious to him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its creator.
Your destiny is a mystery to us. What will happen when the buffalo are all slaughtered? The wild horses tamed? What will happen when the secret corners of the forest are heavy with the scent of many men and the view of the ripe hills is blotted with talking wires? Where will the thicket be? Gone! Where will the eagle be? Gone! And what is to say goodbye to the swift pony and then hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival.
When the last red man has vanished with this wilderness, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, will these shores and forests still be here? Will there be any of the spirit of my people left?
We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother's heartbeat. So, if we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it. Care for it, as we have cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you receive it. Preserve the land for all children, and love it, as God loves us.
As we are part of the land, you too are part of the land. This earth is precious to us. It is also precious to you.
One thing we know - there is only one God. No man, be he Red man or White man, can be apart. We ARE all brothers after all."
      (~December, 1854)

Campbell is so conversant with the ultimate mystery of religion/spirituality, that he's not expressing it in a way that helps the average man in the street. He jumps from one set of terminologies & traditions to another, using specialized term after term that most folks won't know. And although Bill Moyers is doing his best to follow the words _logically,_ I don't think he's doing much better - too much legacy American religion weighing down his mind. Most of us experience the same road block, I bet. Whether we're 'religious' or not, most of us are trapped in our post-Enlightenment logical materialism. Our era and culture indoctrinate us into the conviction that anything that's beyond ration is simply... irrational (= nonsense). :^/

I'm glad I know Jesus personally and that He is not the author of confusion. But Campbell is deeply trying to talk himself into his own ideas about reality! After over 40 years in social sciences, I still find New Age Occult ideas to be more entertaining than Disney, but both use the imagination!

In my opinion, the eternal principle is Love.
The reason is that God limits itself as Man, as Woman, as Life, so not to be alone.
    Just try explaining this.
    Not easy.

@@shotjohnny He sure speaks like one here though, and even kicks off with the Bramanic concept. I have read different places where he places high value on Indian thought. Yes, that doesn't mean that some gurus cannot be charlatans. Actually in this video he seems to talk more like a guru, than not.

    • @shotjohnny
      @shotjohnny ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tayrowell Campbell speak here as a great teacher, which he was, not as a guru, so I disagree there with you. And just because he starts off with the concept of Brahman in this bit (these interviews were hours long), doesn't mean that he was favorable to the idea of a guru. He said in his lectures that there are few gurus that are the "real" ones (he even visited with one when he was in India), but overall he was vehemently against the concept of a guru, because gurus are suppose to represent the "end" of a teaching and students are not encourage to find their OWN way; they are simply to follow the guru's path. And Campbell was HUGE proponent of EACH finding THEIR OWN way.

@@shotjohnny I have read in books about his respect for the religions of the East, very pointedly, Hinduism (Advaita Vedanta (in particular), and Buddhism. So, I do not see it your way based on his words. You can't be against all gurus and take that position. I agree with you that he championed finding your own way. I also think alot of gurus are charlatans even though I have high respect for the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. These works are written by gurus and transmitted by them, though.

God Rest Dr. Campbell's soul in Eternity so he doesn't have to come back for the god-forsaken masses.
The Golden Rule has always been The Golden Path to experiencing Divinity until we're called from this world.
Loved ones I've lost remind me in my dreams. It is about love and watching for the vice, vanity and iniquity in us.
Jung had seen from his dreams and his patients that The Hero (has) A Thousand Faces, who is there to help us.
Jung kept a crucifix to help him and his patents in their dark moments. Someday, we will return to The Eternal Dream.

"the God-forsaken masses" -- such a potent phrase, the hopeless heaviness of it everywhere as we go through life.
But there are pools of light in this darkness that we know so well. I was thinking of Patti Smith's documentary video. At the end she says (maybe referring to the death of her husband Fred "Sonic" Smith) "He is not dead. He doth not sleep. He hath awakened from the dream of life."
