Marphitimus, in the HL:A part ¿Did you play that part on VR or just took it from somrwhere? I heard there's a way yo play Alyx without vr. But, I don't know. Forgive me. My English isn't good
The "taste" is probably only described so vividly by marphy. It's not really taste or at least I doubt the programmer thought of it that way, it's just a pragmatic function to prevent barnacles from getting trapped in a loop of chewing and spitting out the same object over and over again. Would kinda defeat the purpose of them being obstacles to the player if they can be effectively "disabled" that way.
I would assume it was a technical limitation (due to the addition of ragdoll physics) if not for the fact that the beta had it and it works fine. The only thing I can think of is maybe the resurrection process doesn't restore all NPC data (health, weapon, etc.) and they couldn't figure out how to make it work so they removed it.
@@Triumph263 Most likely it was done because it looks silly for the npc to just drop from the sky in its standard pose. Animating the ragdoll back into a standing position was also not possible.
Jesus, these things gave me the shivers and they still do now. Just the concept of getting ingested alive by a hole in the wall with teeth is just so unsettling.

I think this was a feature designed to stop barnacles from picking up the same things over and over again. It is cool to think of it as a sense of taste though.
Fact: The Civil Protection units have an unused animation where they’re grasping their necks from the tongue of the barnacle strangling them, and when they’re being eaten, they get compacted into the barnacles mouth.
I saw it when I was playing gmod with an addon that lets you play animations if a ragdoll has them. When I saw the CP’s animation list, I saw those animations. I don’t know the source of the animations but I guess they were used in early stages of the game’s development but ended up being cut or unused. The addon for gmod is called “easy animations tool”
I like how the barnacles seem to adapt after Half-Life 1. They used to prey on humans and could always be escaped, now they try to eat everything and instantly kill unprotected creatures.
Though it made no sense that they ate only humans seeing as they're from Xen. I'd say their typical prey is usually headcrabs, houndeyes, and any unwary Vortigaunts.
Seems more likely that it's just engine limitations, they weren't able to make animations for the barnacle eating all the aliens in the original Half Life so they cut it, then Half Life 2 had ragdolling so animations aren't required and they can just eat anything.
Dude, you’re over thinking this lmfao. The goldsrc engine literally couldn’t handle 90% of the barnacle improvements made in HL2 and Alyx. There are no deep lore implications or story reasons for these features to be lacking. It’s just the technology they had at the time.

There's probably an official explanation somewhere, but my theory is that barnacle spores require a host, which means that the barnacles you encounter (except on Xen, perhaps), were just people or animals unlucky enough to have a spore portal'd into them, driving them up to ceilings where their biomass is converted into a full-grown barnacle.
HL2 barnacles spit out corpses in the form of toothpicks, catch them, try to eat them, realize they're toothpicks and then spit them out? ...I always thought they were just ripping stuff off the floor. Made way more sense to me. Still does.
Something unique about the barnacles in HL:A is that they seem to eat much more slowly. Over the course of weeks or months. They won't settle simply for the head of a creature, they can be seen growing around a creature as they consume it, sort of like a snake swallowing its prey whole. This behavior can be seen in the quarantine containment section. I distinctly remember seeing a CP hanging by the ankle with his entire foot up to his shin consumed. They've certainly changed as the series progresses
3:20 Combine announcer: Individual, you are charged with socio-endangerment, level one Gordon, with a camera: whats up my dudes for this prank we're gonna feed this alien b*tch some soda lol like and subscribble
04:59 Imagining the Zombie crying and saying "MY ICING!!". Funny thing about the Barnacles in HL2 is they will even eat a whole Antlion Guardian but they never spawn in the game map unless you use Spawn Codes. :P
If they redesign the HEV suit, it'd probably be a good idea to make it out of soda cans. If you can't have a helmet, the least you can do is taste yucky to barnacle.
HLA turned these things from minor annoyances to being down right terrifying, its like feeding a lion you wanna run but at the same time its fun to watch it eat.
2:03 I was disappointed by this in HL2, but like the so-called "missing" features in Alyx it doesn't ruin the game for me and everything. They actually made some barnacle strangling animations for citizens and vortigaunts that ended up unused. I'm surprised you didn't mock something up with those, Marphy!
@@sonicdash9652 Couldn't be further from the truth, if you look at all the features Half-Life 2 has in Marphy's series here. The graphics aren't even the best part of the game, even for 2004.
Imagine if in Alex you spawned it fuck tones of little cans or something like that, and shoved all of it into a barnicle? Then upon killing it, it crashes the game!
I'm sure I remember a room in Opposing Force right after you get the handheld barnicle full of barnicles and headcrabs where I used to lead the headcrabs into the tongues - did they change it so barnicles eat headcrabs in OF?
Opposing Force (and Blue-Shift, maybe even Decay) are in a weird spot when it comes to "canon", I think... For the most part they're pretty self-contained and from what little I understand: Are almost like they're in some kind of "no-mans-land" (As in: Made by different developers and technically might not've actually happened as far as VALVe's concerned, which is kinda understandable since Opposing Force really experimented with things like Race X and all...) Some stuff like Black Mesa getting nuked stuck while others like Race X, Gonomes (possibly via retcon since it's a known fact that Headcrabs are a bit different in HL2 onwards due to Combine experimentation), etc. didn't. A "detached" Barnacle is indeed a weapon you get in Opposing Force, and you use it to grab up and can kill most enemies with it (I think. Haven't really tested. Marphy oughta do a video on that), but I think Gearbox mostly did it because they just thought it'd be fun at the end of the day. As some people have pointed out: They either could have started eating Headcrabs and trying other things *later* out of necessity since humans became savvy to how they operate as predators, or it was a oversight in/retcon of the first games running on GoldSource... In short: I guess take it all with a grain of salt, *probably* canon unless VALVe says otherwise. Also quick sidenote: Pretty sure the *game* Black Mesa only lets them eat Headcrabs because it's using the same engine as HL2. It was made by fans, after all. (The Headcrab design is also the same as HL2's even though the ones in HL1 & 2 have significant differences in design)
@@ThatGenericPyro I figure Gonomes are headcrab zombies that have been infected by Xen spores given their somewhat similar appearance to Jeff and their ability to spit toxins and that they often appear in spore infested areas in Opposing Force. Race X was from a another dimension entirely the portal to which was closed by Adrian Shepard at the end of Opposing Force which explains why they aren't in HL2. As for why Race X soldiers use what appear to be Xen spore grenades I have no idea, maybe they just figured out how to use them in the same way Adrian and later Alyx did?

In alyx its shown that you can resist for a while
So barnacles choke you till youre unconscious, break your neck and eat you

And here's a mistery: Why EVERY barnacle in the series spits out human gibs(or bones) upon their death?
There's probably an official explanation somewhere, but my theory is that barnacle spores require a host, which means that the barnacles you encounter (except on Xen, perhaps), were just people or animals unlucky enough to have a spore portal'd into them, driving them up to ceilings where their biomass is converted into a full-grown barnacle.

The changes in eating behaviors show the barnacles getting more desperate to find food
HL2 barnacles spit out corpses in the form of toothpicks, catch them, try to eat them, realize they're toothpicks and then spit them out?

Oh man I've gotten puked on so many times in Alyx, the game is so immersive
God I hate the idea of getting eaten by a barnacle, just sends shivers down my spine lol

Barnacles have such satisfying sound effects.
I didn't played any Half-Life but I still find this video very informative
"goblee smack smack" he has such a way with words
I can imagine the metro cop from the start being endlessly entertained by a barnacle complying with his orders.
by HL 2, humans became much more scarce, so barnacles had to expand their palates.
In HL2, they were focusing more on the "Source graphics" and minor details like this one.
@@sonicdash9652 Couldn't be further from the truth, if you look at all the features Half-Life 2 has in Marphy's series here. The graphics aren't even the best part of the game, even for 2004.
In Garry’s Mod, the Barnacles eat anything except Poison Headcrabs, even objects bigger than them.

Your videos are just too good man.
your content is as glorious as Gordon himself!
