    You missed the plate voltage on the Art. That’s one of the coolest features, run it in high plate voltage and it’s just more refined and clean without any brittleness/harshness... just nice and smooth and high end sounding.
    When you want to go dirty kick that off, and you get a different animal.
    It’s worth experimenting until you figure out the different ways the gain/output knobs respond with plate voltage high or low.
    Thanks for the review. Good job.

    Honestly I like the grit and the imperfections of the ART! It depends on what your going for. If you want to drive your drums, bass, snare, kick whatever ART is the go to for Saturation. Avalon to me is cleaner and smooth!

    You know you're supposed to press the plate voltage button in? When not lit up, the preamp is running the tubes at a low voltage (cheap preamps like these Behringer tube ones do this, it's called a starved plate design - because the tube is being run in "starvation" by having not enough power to work as it was intended to). Creating a higher voltage (100-200V) for proper tube operation costs money, this is why manufacturers often go for starved plate. In the ART unit you can switch which one you want. From the manual:
    The PRO MPA II takes about 10-30 seconds to smoothly transition from one mode to the other. There is a slight increase in gain in the “High” plate voltage mode.
    In the “normal” (OUT) position, the tube distortion gradually rises until it smoothly clips. The tube is run almost completely open-loop in this mode, providing a musical tube “crunch” when overdriven with a natural recovery from clipping. The tube section can be more easily overdriven when the gain switch is in. This mode brings out the harmonics in the input sources, particularly stringed instruments.
    The tube circuit runs extremely clean in the “high” (IN) position of the plate voltage switch. As signal levels rise distortion remains very low until within 6dB of clipping, where the overload characteristics smoothly limit the signal swing. There is increased bandwidth (>100KHz), and headroom in this mode as well.
    So you might want to revisit that one!

    I actually thought the ART unit worked better with that vocal mic. I thought it was warmer and more even. The 737 revealed a little harshness in the upper part of the mic that I didn't hear when you were using it with the ART. I also thought the ARTunit was more versatile, tone wise. You could really hear the quality of the tubes with the gain switch employed, plus the variable impedance adjustment was very cool. While the Avalon was definitely more pristine, and accurate, that's not always what you're looking for from a preamp. Sometimes you want color. Sometimes you want character. The ART unit simply won in these regards.

  • @bennettshapiro2965
    @bennettshapiro2965 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Next time, maybe you can compare the 737 with the ART Voice Channel. It might be a more apt comparison.
    Thank you for doing this.

    Avalon sounds great as always ! I ain't mad that Art Pro MPA II except for when the light goes out ! Thanks for this comparison. This is exactly what i needed to help my decision making. While i love the expensive gear and all the bells and whistles, i'm starting to get into cheaper (in price) gear that sounds great as well. As an engineer, i strive to have the best sound for my client, but at the end of the day its not the gear what makes the performance sound good. They one line i get from most artist is "Make sure my vocal sounds crispy" At the end of the day the consumer of music is not going to be thinking about which mic pre was used. Great Video !

    With all studio equipment, it’s about preference. Having a lot of tools is beneficial but what stands out is skill. I don’t own the outboard tube pre for the Avalon but I do have the UAD plugin emulation of it and I own a single channel Art mic pre and a Behringer ultragain vacuum tube pre, which all are nice but I prefer the behringer over the other 2 and it’s the cheapest out of all 3 🤷🏿‍♂️point is, get what works for u and ur workflow cause it’s not always about what u have, it’s what u do with it 💪🏿💯💯

    Thanks man this video sold me on the PRO MPA2. I've been recording myself rapping for like 15 years and finally I'm getting a badass tube mic for my birthday and needed a pre to run it through. Although the Avalon is way better, this video along with others showed me the awesome sonic characters the MPA2 can hopefully achieve for me.

  • @acmeyakko
    @acmeyakko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Appreciate you doing the video, but if you're going to do a comparison, probably best to run the plate voltage high on the Art. The Avalon has a proper plate voltage (similar to the high on the Art). The lower plate voltage on the Art is a nice feature that lets you get a different distortion character but isn't comparable to what the Avalon is doing.

    I have both - both really useful! You would think 200.00 per channel would sound bad or at least not be remotely comparable to 3800.00 per channel but it's just not the case. To be fair, my ART purchases over the years have proven to not physically hold up as well. Light meters fail, buttons break, etc.. The components are cheap as you might expect. The Avalon will easily outlive me! That said, ART's designs are really good and make the most of inexpensive components. They do work and they sound good enough for most of to use in the real world. And who doesn't love a VU meter?!

      I haven’t tried the Lauren audio 320 but I actually love this mic over the cv-12. My first purchase of the cv12 didn’t go so well. It produced a lot of white noise and I had to change the tube and the noise stopped. Once the noise stopped I sold it. Found out later that it was an issue that a few ppl experienced from the first issue of this mic. I loved the sound and purchased it again after missing it so much. After purchasing the v13, I couldn’t see myself keeping the cv12 any longer and let it go again. Lol. I love the v13 and cant see myself parting with it anytime soon. It will be my tube mic option for sure!

      Things like drums that are tone clusters, or synths that are no where near a real sound, don't give a good idea on this kind of gear. I think any preamp on those things sound fine. It is on vocals and other acoustic instruments where pres like the avalon really shine. We know a human voice inside and out. When it sounds off we hear that fast. Drums are a thud, think, thin, its still a thud.

    The avalon is the most overpriced piece of junk in recording history. Shockingly horrible.

      Facts. I like the mic pre on it, but I definitely wouldn't pay more than 1,000 bucks for one especially with all of the affordable new gear out there that's holding it's own against what is considered to be "vintage gear".

    Avalon compressor sucks. All that money, and the compressor stinks 😩. Unbelievable. Overrated

      It definitely isn’t made to be hit hard at all. I do like the eq on it though. I love the preamp and eq. I would only hit the compressor lightly, but for the money, you should be able to really push it! 🤷🏾‍♂️
