    I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for six MLF Championships and won roughly a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

    I have watched several videos on this exact subject in the last few years. You nailed it. The most simple explanation and advise I’ve heard on how to put line on a spinning reel. I’m glad you took time to make that clip Matt. Thanks!

    I've heard that a loose drag can also contribute. By this I mean if you have a fish on and you turn your handle while the drag is slipping, the line is twisting horribly. Is this the truth or just something I've heard over the years? I love your videos and have recommended them to my grandson who fishes high school tournaments. You give practical, hands on advice without all the crazy fish catching hype that teaches nothing and just wastes time. Thanks!!!

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn’t say it’s a loose drag that causes line twist. It’s the act of reeling while your drag is being pulled. So yes you will increase line twist if you are reeling while your drag is being pulled out. Great question!

    • @juleswinnfield826
      @juleswinnfield826 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One could also lock the the drag down and back reel at the moment that a big fish would normally take line from the drag...... with that said this takes a good bit of practice and the back reel switch in a convenient position on the real. Learned this 30 plus years ago when spinning reel drag systems weren't that great.

    This is one of the many reasons u use braid to leader on everything... especially on bait casters cuz I find that backlashes are way more forgiving and easier to untangle without destroying a full spool of line. Great tips, I always close my bale manually, but still didnt realise that not doin so with the handle would cause line issues💪💪

    I have an electric line spooler that allows me to remove the reel spool and mount it onto the arbor and put line on it with zero twists. Years ago I discovered that this is not the best way. When you have no twists on the spool, the line twists as it comes off the spool during a cast. If your spool is 4" in diameter and you make a 100' cast, you will have 300 twists between the spool and your lure. The reel will remove those twists when you reel the line back in...mostly. You will lose a couple twists each time you lift your lure out of the water between casts, and you lose them all on your first line break. In short order, the first 100' or so off your spool ends up twisted back onto the spool anyway. Personally, I would rather have my twists on the spool and not between the spool and my next PB. Tight Lines!

    What about using those dropshot hooks that have the swivels? I've never tried them, only because there seems to be more stuff at the nose of the weight.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't found them to help with line twist much in my opinion. However they do let the bait pivot nicely.

  • @briannordberg3184
    @briannordberg3184 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another extremely common source of twist is continuing to crank the handle while the drag is slipping. This just twists and twists line. 40 years of frequent spinning reel use leads me to believe this may be the most common cause, especially with novice anglers.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! Reeling while your drag is going out is terrible for line twist.

  • @zgambler1
    @zgambler1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    more line twist comes from reeling and having the drag going out at the same time

  • @ballzybaits4414
    @ballzybaits4414 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another line twist is when a fish is on the line and you're reeling it in as it fights and you hear the drag clicking but the line isn't going out, you're causing line twist....dunno how to explain it but yeah...you get the point. lol.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep reeling at the same time drag is being pulled out leads to line twist

      After re spooling
      Take the spool off and drop it in a very very hot cup of water and let it set for 15 to 20 minutes.
      It will re memorize the line to the spool and totally eliminate that 1st line adjustment birdsnest.
      Learned this from basmasters magazine early eighties 👍

    Are you familiar with KastKing V10LS Spooling Station Rod Rack
    I bought one for the rack setup itself. As far as the spooler part of the station. The baitcaster spooling part is easy and makes scenes but the spinning reel setup is What i'm asking about. The way it works. It comes off of the real counter clockwise but then goes up through an eye loop. Then to your rod was wondering if that's creating line twist. or is the process they have working just fine? I don't want to keep using it if that's the problem but we are getting line . twist. And yes I always close the bail by hand and mostly throwing Wacky riggs , and Texas rigged craws , beavers and worms . Would like to know your input thank you

    I'd like to add a couple more tips.
    1. Braid has very little twist compared to mono or fluoro
    2. When you go to the lake after spooling new line, let it all out trolling behind the boat for a minute or two then reel it in while still trolling. This wets the line, let's it untwist, and reels back in under an even tension.
    3. I recently learned this one. If you notice loops on the spool, DO NOT CAST! Just back off the drag and pull the line out. It almost always comes right out.
    4. Using lures with stop and go or jerk retrieves, like topwaters, allows little loops on the spool, compared to lures with steady retrieves, so pay closer attention to the spool when using these lures.

    This question is around the same idea of the video. I bank fish/pond hop all throughout the week randomly. I keep my combos and my bag with tackle in my car just about at all times. Does the heat inside the car have any effect on the line? I find that even after 2 weeks my line has some pretty bad memory and I'm buying sunline and p-line.

    • @MattStefanFishing
      @MattStefanFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would need to get extremely hot for it to make a difference. But if the spool touches something in the car that is to hot to touch it can definitely hurt the line
