I think that Kai being kind of underdeveloped as a character makes sense. He isnt someone were supposed to sympathize with, he is the final challenge for Po, an unstoppable force whos motivations boil down to bitter resentment. hes not a character whos misunderstood, hes a monster, and that is fine.
Yes. Exactly. Also Kai had some reason to why he was doing what he was doing. He felt betrayed by his best friend and also hated that his prior glory as warrior and hero of China was wiped from record due to his selfish action towards getting addicted to chi to the point of harming innocent life, that he sought to destroy everything oogway built as payback. Definitely not sympathetic, but he wasn’t just a generic bad guy unlike the chameleon. I compare Kai to someone like Jack Horner or Pitch Black. Someone who has reasons for doing bad things but isn’t sympathetic at all and is still pure evil.

In defense to Kai, apparently Oogway was also a conquering warlord and his brother-in-arms. It's less that Kai turned evil and more Oogway that turned good when discovering Chi, "betraying" Kai in the process. With that said, I agree that Kai would have benefited from more development on his backstory to be as compelling as the legends that are Shen and Tai Lung.
Also Kai’s reputation as a warrior and hero for China was erased from history due to his selfish actions towards sentient life stealing chi from life, thus was trying to destroy everything oogway built as revenge. He wasn’t necessarily a generic villain. He had layers, but he just wasn’t given enough fleshing out.
In a time as old as that i wouldn't think being a warlord is necessairily a bad thing, he's a turtle and probably lived through a time of constant conflict between various Clans and whatnot
Additionally, since Kai and Oogway were blood brothers (as in brothers forged through bloodshed on the battlefield; blood is thicker than water and all that), and Oogway was nearly killed on the battlefield, from Kai's prospective it was his lack of power that led to the possibility of danger arising and not that he was unable to build up anything and only could destroy. When he saw Oogway become more passive, he saw him become weaker, since to him not being aggressive is weakness (cause on a battlefield, striking first is almost always best) and saw him endangering himself. He couldn't understand how his friend had been so poisoned other than the panda's being the cause, so no pandas Oogway will be back to normal right? no obv, but that's not the mindset of a warlord who rules with overwhelming power But yeah, there was no screen time for any of this, and no real substantial development
@@ParkerCS2 it would've been so cool if Po started nerding out about Kai mid-fight about when Kai used certain moves in the past, with nobody else understanding what he's talking about. We know Po is a massive fanboy of Kung Fu, so him being the only main character to know about Kai would make sense
KFP 1 - Believe in yourself KFP 2 - Don’t let your trauma define you KFP 3 - Find your spirit even when all is lost KFP 4 - Don’t be short Edit: Guys, the “don’t be short” thing is a joke lol. KFP 4 is just super average
@@ThePrincessCH They should have continued with the lore of that though as Tigress accidentally read Po's potential careers list instead of the actual Kung Fu Masters list. A cleaner, a comedian, a dancer, a doctor, and an emperor. Like, there was potential past lore for Tigress there, no? Also, the Ti-Po shippers might go wild for this if they haven't already.
There's a small layer to Kai's motivation I feel like he doesn't outright say, but does heavily imply with his dialogue that may infer to what he really wanted originally. In almost every encounter Kai has, he seems to be increasingly frustrated that nobody knows who he is. It's been a long time since he's been alive and, while Oogway has statues and is generally loved, Kai, who was his "brother" for most of their lives has been completely forgotten. Kai has been buried by the flow of time and I believe what Kai ultimately wanted (whether he knew it or not) was to leave his mark on history... that he would be remembered... and that never happened. It's why when Po actually acknowledges Kai's history that his anger subsides even for a moment and he seems actually happy. While not being as obvious as the other villains, Kai's real issue was a feeling of insecurity and that he wanted people to know of him. He wanted to be a legend. He did not want to be a forgotten memory.
On top of this, Kai's intention mirrors what Po wants in KFP3. To leave a legacy. He perfectly fits the theme of this particular movie. I still stand by Kai being a far better villain thematically than most people give him credit for.
@@norsehorse84 Not to mention his backstory does the same, him not changing with Oogway from the warlord days after seeing the pandas and instead resenting Oogway for attacking him and painting himself as a monk parallels Po’s other conflict of not wanting anything to change, he wanted his identity to stay the same but Po eventually realises that you can simply find your identity through your natural actions rather than just forcing it to be a certain way and that’s all that matters.
I wholeheartedly agree, being such a renowned master and also being completely ignored by all of history must sting, I can relate with the need of wanting to be remembered by the history books as well.
FUN FACT: Kai’s theme is a version of the song “I’m So Sorry” by Imagine Dragons that the band actually helped Hans Zimmer make!! i see so many people who praise the music in this film who aren’t aware of that info. i remember seeing Kai’s intro scene in the theater the first time i watched KP3 and kinda freaking out cuz i IMMEDIATELY recognized the melody lol
It's an overlooked detail but Po was also slowly learning to use Chi through all 3 movies. He figures out the wooshi finger hold in the first movie, the second movie he uses chi to redirect the canon balls (it's not stated outright but the fact the balls change color to what chi looks like in 3 and what the wooshi finger hold explosion looks like in the first.)
The KFP series was perfect as a trilogy, all had an important lesson KFP 1 - Believing in yourself KFP 2 - Discovering yourself KFP 3 - Mastering yourself And all the villains challenged Po in the one of the 3 ways of martial arts training Tai Lung - Po's physical test, trained the body Lord Shen - Po's mental test, trained the mind Kai - Po's spiritual test, trained the spirt Then the 4th movie was just an unnecessary cash grab
To quote a TH-camr: it’s like Star Wars. First one is an epic origin and a classic. Second is a lot darker, the fan favorite, and the main characters learns about their family. (Luke I am your father, po learns from Shen) finally the last one is slower, spends time in a grass land with cute cuddly creatures and elan epic finale that makes up for it all.
@@UltimateDespairado I'd argue Kung Fu Panda 4 is even more of an insult than Episode 1, because Kung Fu Panda 4 actively destroyed all the progress that was made in the previous movie. Episode 1 didn't disrespect or ruin the original trilogy, it was just a lackluster movie that nevertheless added something of value to the universe. Kung Fu Panda 4 is more on the level of Episode 9 with that awful "Somehow Palpatine returned" line, that's how disrespectful it felt.
We can technically still count it as a finale, Kung Fu Panda was always planned to have two trilogies.. So this can be the finale of the first trilogy and the first saga. Or we can also just pretend that Kung Fu Panda 4 just doesn’t exist!
If Kung Fu Panda 3 was the final part of the story, where would Po meet Zhen. When would the Chameleon bring back all the worst people that threaten Kung Fu just to extract their powers?
Oh he’s definitely intimidating, the trilogy cooked with villains, it’s just when you’re competition Shen and Tai Lung being a lil below them is nothing to scoff at
I’d agree with you if the movie didn’t constantly turn him into a joke in almost every scene. I feel like if you cut out literally all the scenes where the writing decides to take a haha funny jab towards him, he’d be 100% more memorable and intimidating
I will admit, Kai does actually have the most interesting concept art of the villians. There’s drawings of him with an extra set of arms and blades to lean into the spiritual aspect, there’s art where he’s essentially a looming demon that’s watched the pandas since his death. There’s much more stark artworks in his lighting as he actually throws the entire jade palace down the mountain. There’s even a nicely done storyboard with written dialogue of when he runs into crane at the desert ship. But instead it had the writing of interactions of a much deeper story like in 1 and 2. It’s just fascinating.
I feel like Kai’s motivation was more about how Oogway let his memory die. I also like each villain in trilogy represents an aspect of Taoism. Tai Lung is the body, Shen is the mind and Kai is the spirit, which is why Kai had those supernatural powers related to chi.
Fun fact: Mads Mikkelsen was the original casting for Kai, but his schedule couldn't accommodate it, so he was recast with J.K. Simmons. Not to downplay J.K. though, he was great.
@@SecretMagician That's probably for the best. I can't really imagine Kai being voiced by Mads Mikkelsen. He specialises more in cunning, soft spoken kind of villains as opposed to J.K. Simmons, who's a better fit as an angry, vengeful general.
Villains don't always have to have some grandiose emotional reason for being villains, occasionally a big scary man with at least a spec of intention is all you need
@@jeffreyquinde6707Well yea but not to the level of Tai Lung by any means. Tai Lung felt betrayed by Shifu and Oogway, not being given the Dragon Warrior title. Shifu filled his head with broken dreams, trained til his bones break, and was ultimately denied the destiny he trained for because of the lingering darkness in his heart. Lord Shen meanwhile.... he was always a bad dude. He sought to learn the darker path of fireworks, the fear and destruction from the gunpowder. His answer he chose when he saw he would be bested by a warrior in black and white? He chose genocide. The only emotional thing Shen has going for him is him swearing revenge and hating his parents despite the fact the parents banished him in a regrettable decision. They still loved him, and banishment was a hard choice to make.
I don't remember where I heard this, but Po's outfit in the Spirit world as the Dragon Warrior contains all three colors which symbolized each movie - the first movie's warm yellows is in his hat, Shen's dark red is in his belt, and Kai's green is in his new staff. Really shows that every obstacle grew Po into what he is today.
So the main thing that I actually appreciate where others don't is the more light hearted tone and emphasis on comedy. While it may seem like a stark contrast from 2's intense drama, I think it makes perfect sense. Finding inner peace Po is now completley happy and content with himself and his life. So while the stakes have technically never been higher, it can be handled with more fun to reflect that positive change in Po mentally.
I appreciate more than ever what a great, *true* conclusion this is to Po's journey to fully become the Dragon Warrior. Showing why Oogway chose him, not Awkwafina Fox.
@@watershipup7101 Yeah, that was pretty out of character for Shifu. I actually think that the movie had a pretty plausible ending; Zhen won't become Dragon Warrior immediately, she still has to serve time in prison and has to be trained to only one day assume the role. But Shifu somehow wants Po to choose a successor among a bunch of strangers on the same day as he was told that? I actually thought that he was the Chameleon in disguise for a moment. Considering that earlier in production Shifu was supposed to have been kidnapped by her (so that he could have a reunion with Tai Lung) it actually could have been a nice twist.
@@apenasmaisumdiogo.7115 I like your idea that Po appointed Zhen now, but that she won't take on the role of dragon warrior until much later. According to the first film, it usually takes *YEARS* of training to become a kung fu master. So, it makes sense that it is tradition to begin training a younger person while still in your prime: by the time they are ready to step up, you'd be ready to step down.
I always interpreted Oogway's betrayal being that Oogway was once a villain alongside Kai, but the compassion of the Panda Village made him have a change of heart, with Kai seeing his turn to the light as a betrayal.
I don't think people were really that harsh on the third movie When it came out, they were mostly like yeah it's good enough, not the first Two but still good book end
I really liked the use of Trigress in this movie too. It was really satisfying to see how her and Po’s relationship had developed through all 3 movies. You get to see how they both come to respect each other’s differences that they’d initially found to be strange. They also don’t have a forced relationship unlike how most movies believe that “male and female characters must be romantic partners and can’t just be friends.”
2:34 when the valley comes under attack and Po is going off to fight Kai’s jombies, the lighting on Li turns blood red. It shows the lingering PTSD that Li has from Shen’s attack that massacred his people, definitely killed his wife, and seemingly killed his son all in one fell swoop when he “lost everything”. Very brief, quiet moment but effective.
I absolutely adore Kung Fu Panda 3 and it makes me sad that people don’t give this movie as much credit as it deserves! The fight with Kai when Po finally gets his transformation into the dragon warrior looking like how he did in the intro of the first movie just might be my favorite scene in the entire series. Great video!
Even though that Kai is arguably to be the weakest Kung Fu Panda villain until the Chameleon but he is probably one of the most powerful DreamWorks villains out there.
That’s at least one good thing to come of this movie’s villain. In fact, every voice actor who played a villain in these movies is one of the best things about those characters, and yes, that includes The Chameleon’s voice actress, Viola Davis.
Honestly, Kai’s design and asthetic SCREAMS the inspiration of Death from Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The weapons scraping on the floor on both sides, their role as the looming threat, the glowing eyes, the glaring stare, everything is just screaming Death.
I have a family friend who voice acted in this film. They made him a character SPECIFICALLY for him to voice, with his first name as the character name. When we got together one year we played his scene and just kept shouting his lines. I still chuckle when thinking about it.
It might be hard for the villain to live up to the standards of someone who single-handily escaped a maximum security prison using only a feather, and Gary Oldman as an evil peacock, but I do have to give Kai props for not only still posing as a decent threat (and for arguably being more powerful than both Tai Lung and Shen COMBINED), and for also getting the yellow m&m himself to provide the voice.
5:54 I mean to be fair, we also see Lord Shen suddenly wanting to conquer all of China just by seeing some fireworks. Yes Shen has more importance than Kai between the two movies, but I think they’re similar enough to make this statement.
I feel about Kung Fu Panda 3 the same way I feel about Star Wars Episode 6. Even if you aren't a big fan of it you still have to admit that it was a good conclussion and it ties the knot on all the themes.
Something else I'll add - this is the one theater experience I've had where seeing it in 3D actually benefitted the film. I usually avoid 3D, but I saw this as part of a three-movie day and the only showing that fit the schedule was in 3D. It turns out the stuff in the spirit world was excellent in 3D, and conveyed the scale of the space and the objects floating (and being flung around) in it VERY well.
Something that still bothers me about 4 that could have at least made the ending a little better is Poe's choice of new dragon warrior. He chose Awkwafina Fox when Tigress would have been a way better option. The deal in the first movie is that everyone expected Tigress to be the dragon warrior even when it was given to Poe. It would have been such an amazing tie-in to the first movie if she finally got the title she had trained for her entire life.
I 100% agree. Tigress has this powerful character arc as she grows from struggling to reconcile with not being selected as the dragon warrior. I, too, find myself greatly frustrated at the 4th film's audacity to not only throw aside her development for a less compelling character, but to not even INCLUDE HER at all. As Schaff mentioned during this video, KFP3, despite some of the goofier moments, respects the previous films. Somehow, the 4th movie fails at achieving both the emotional maturity of the first two films and staying true to the characters and their arcs. Suddenly, the conclusion brings the movie down to something like a 4/10 for me.
I disagree. One major component of Tigress' character is her learning that being the DW is not her destiny and she has gradually come to terms with this. While she definitely respects the title and what it represents it isn't what she truly needed. Besides, her primary motivation for wanting the DW title in the first place was to finally make Shifu proud of her. She didn't really care about the title itself. Same thing with her getting into Kung Fu and following the warrior's path was again due to Shifu and her desire to be close to him and have him genuinely acknowledge her and love her enough. Tigress was deprived of love all of her life so this sense. She received all of the love and validation she needed in her life from Po later anyway.
I don't dislike the third one but I wouldn't rewatch it as I would rewatch Toy Story 3 or Madagascar 3. I wish DreamWorks ignored those parents who complained about the second one being too dark and went with the original intent of it being a much darker installment.
I will say, the best thing about KFP4 is that it made people appreciate KFP3 more. I loved this film even before the fourth came out, so I'm glad more people are seeing 3 as a more worthy sequel than they used to.
The third act misunderstanding being reversed in 5 minutes is very refreshing, especially having Po's adoptive father helping with it too. Some people really do just want power, and don't need a twist. That's actually a bigger twist than there being sympathetic or something. And it does advance Po's story further in a good way.

the title of this video is so clever! its a very subtle nod to how it WAS a great finale, implying that there is a fourth movie (which there is) which makes the third one NOT the finale anymore, bravo vince
I have a cool theory about Kai. I think him and Oogway were both war lords (evil guys) but Oogway turned good thanks to the pandas. Kai wanted to conquer the pandas with Oogway but he had a change of heart. They had a disagreement fight and Oogway won (that'a the part from the movie)

I can’t understand why after this movie opened establishing that Po would now be a teacher as well as the Dragon Warrior, KFP4 would rehash that feeling with Po now being the Spiritual Leader and NOT the Dragon Warrior. Instead I think KFP 4 should have been about Shifu wanting The Furious Five to disperse across China to spread his teachings while Po stays. Have THAT be the change that Po and the rest have to deal with and then they have some conversations on how each of them feels different about that during their final mission together to take down the Chameleon (who hopefully has a much better motivation in this version) Oh and Zhen is nowhere to be found.

Oogway was always the wisest of all Kung Fu.
Kai became the polar opposite when he found out how to take chi.
He couldn't understand how his friend had been so poisoned other than the panda's being the cause, so no pandas Oogway will be back to normal right? no obv, but that's not the mindset of a warlord who rules with overwhelming power
But yeah, there was no screen time for any of this, and no real substantial development
@@ParkerCS2 it would've been so cool if Po started nerding out about Kai mid-fight about when Kai used certain moves in the past, with nobody else understanding what he's talking about.

The KFP series was perfect as a trilogy, all had an important lesson

Kai was honestly a really intimidating villain, and I’m tired of saying he wasn’t ok?
Why were you saying that he wasn't I think plenty of people would agree with you
One thing The Chameleon was good for, making Kai get more appreciation be deserves
Family friendly Kratos, and his voice acting was wild
Now, the saga is complete.
They even had J.K Simmons on board as the antagonist!
Fun fact: Mads Mikkelsen was the original casting for Kai, but his schedule couldn't accommodate it, so he was recast with J.K. Simmons. Not to downplay J.K. though, he was great.
J Jonah Jameson V.S. Walter White. Two moustached men as Kung Fu-using animals. Best crossover ever.
Didn’t he also play Ford from Gravity Falls?
@@SecretMagician That's probably for the best. I can't really imagine Kai being voiced by Mads Mikkelsen. He specialises more in cunning, soft spoken kind of villains as opposed to J.K. Simmons, who's a better fit as an angry, vengeful general.

Villains don't always have to have some grandiose emotional reason for being villains, occasionally a big scary man with at least a spec of intention is all you need

@@ey3z4yawdym? Shen did have emotional depth.
Very Sundowner in a way
Like OG Bowser
That’s actually really cool
So the main thing that I actually appreciate where others don't is the more light hearted tone and emphasis on comedy.
While it may seem like a stark contrast from 2's intense drama, I think it makes perfect sense. Finding inner peace Po is now completley happy and content with himself and his life. So while the stakes have technically never been higher, it can be handled with more fun to reflect that positive change in Po mentally.
Yeah. That’s a good way to put it

Yeah seriously. What made Shifu think Oogway would want Po to retire in his prime? What gives him the right to decide that?

1:36 THAT WAS A BAR
Schaffrilles spitin’ straight fire.
Kai isn't a deep villain, but he's a great villain. His fights are so satisfying.
Another good way to see how similar they are is the fact that both were ruined because of their sequels

@@cabrondemente1 not really when you watch the toy Story destroyed everything vid, Woodie leaves his family for a love intrest
@@10yearsspinning Please do not bring up the “How Toy Story 4 ruined Toy story” video
For me, it sounds like the guy is nitpicking for six hours and doesn’t really go anywhere.
@@UltimateDespairado yes it does, they undid Jesse's arc of being in a tight space, Buzz made into an idiot, Bo being demeaning, Forky being suicidal treated as a joke, the villian getting what she wants without changing and would've taken voice box anyway, etc
Good.
I suggest you ignore that one and stick with the first three movies.
I deadass thought this was about the most recent kung fu panda because I completely erased 4 from my mind
i was JUST rewatching schaffrillas’s stuff yesterday. him uploading today is heavensent
It was great going on this journey with you Schaff! I Love this trilogy, and I loved hearing your thoughts on each film. You always bring incredibly thoughtful and entertaining analyses to this channel. Thank you for all the great content!

THIS!!! This right here!!!
There is even concept art from the movie’s original script that literally has Kai throwing the palace OFF THE MOUNTAIN like a toy!
Wait until Kung Fu Panda 5 comes out and makes 4 just as much of a masterpiece as the first three
Fun fact: In Chinese made fantasies, chi powers are gained through cultivation, not insight.
Chi was basically a predecessor to the force from Star Wars. Something that surrounds the entire universe and all living things.
@@ParkerCS2Do you think maybe Lucas got inspiration from that for Star Wars, like how he got inspiration from samurai movies?
@@MovieFan1912 probably
Kung Fu Panda 3 is actually my favourite out the trilogy
