    Your leaves are the factory for the plant. Photosynthesis makes everything the plant needs to live and procreate. People want to defoliate their plants because (they say) the buds need the light. Buds are the result of the light that hits the leaves that make the sugars and starches the plant needs. You defoliate your plant and a few weeks later she is full of leaves again. Then you defoliate again so the buds get light etc. Yes it stresses the plant terribly when you defoliate. How much energy did your plant use to re grow the leaves it NEEDS to live when it couldn't have given that energy to the buds. As a grower and a gardener I don't strip my corn so the ears/cobs get more light. The leaves build the cobs! I don't know any gardener that defoliates their trees to make the fruit bigger or better. Have you ever seen the owner of an orchard strip their trees of leaves to make the peaches or cherries better??? No. Don't defoliate and see if your plants grow better buds. Space them out more, get more breeze, more light on more leaves = bigger buds! Try it out for yourself.

    • @PerfectGardensTV
      @PerfectGardensTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well said! More leaves lead to more sugars stored up in the roots; which then lead to a quicker, more explosive bloom, with more flower sites. However, some strains are more prone or susceptible to botrytis in humid climates; and removing some internal leaf late in the bloom cycle, to improve air circulation in the center or middle of those plants, may be beneficial, under the right circumstances. Thanks for checking out the channel.

      Often the loss or stress created by removing a fan leaf is offset by the removal of the shadow cast on the leaves below, especially in early flower. I haven't removed many unless they are at the bottom in shade or causing a mess in the middle that I wanted to keep open, in a way.
      I am learning so much and I can take it as deep as I wish so I am trying different things but am bad at record keeping.

    Only remove leafs when they are yellow, dying or dead. If you are main lining or super cropping you can do any trimming in these processes so you can recover from the stress in vegetation. Once your babies have recovered don't touch them. Use nets to open up ereas for better light penatraition and spacing. So leave them alone and trim a week before harvest. Every time you touch the plants you are at risk of breaking the thc glands which effects potency. It took me a few times to realise the less you disturb them the better it is all round

    Stress is important in cannabis growing, you can stress the plant at certain times to force a higher yield or a higher THC content.. This technique is not exclusive to cannabis, it has been ued in the cotton industry for years to increase yield for example....Timing is everything with cannabis... I have done tests with cuttings of the same plant, defoliated 1 plant at start of flower and at day 21, and left the other go un touched, and I had an extra 25grams on the defoliated plant. Ive been doing this for a few years now, and the biggest variable with this technique is genetics... I would say 90% of the genetics i have tried responded well and some genetics, like Power plant for example, really didnt like it, with some plants turning hermie.. My recommendation would be to try it on a more modern stable strain they seem to be the one's that really thrive from it.

In general it's ok to do it if it will mean more flower sites are getting light, The plant will recover quickly from the experience if it is in good health.. Do not over do it though. Good info but contradictory in some instances. That said, one must act on a case by case basis for some of those issues. Humboldt area growers told me long ago that removing lower area fan leaves that show potential below them, if removed, allow a greater amount of sunlight to filter down to those still developing potential bud areas. The large fan leaves got there by gathering light but will later be less potent due to lack of terps etc. and will eventually be trimmed for shake. That said, shake can be used for a less potent RSO or for cannabutter. Remove to assist lower plant development AND use trim for other earthly delights. When stressing, it is often necessary to remove those leaves, as well. Toss them in a brown paper bag in a cool, dry place

    • @timp8472
      @timp8472 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dark place and let them dry slowly. Pulverize, toast and extract.
      Screening large dry fan leaves is generally fruitless. Lots of crumbled leaf matter, few cannabinoids or terps. An extract is a best practice use, especially if you trim several plants.
      After trimming and low or no light, dose with an appropriate amount, based on size of container, Cal-Mag 1-0-0 at 1 tsp/gal the evening of the trim. This encourages root hairs to interact with nutes and micros while the plant is resting from the day's work doing photosynthesis and allows increased nutrient uptake.
      CalMag may be repeated but use during the beginning of lights-out if doing anything causing stress. Google it.

    I've found a how much a plant stresses is mostly due to genetics if you have good genetics it really won't matter when you deleaf.. I still try to stick to the traditional before flower strip date 21 strip and date 45 strip but my genetics are stable enough to if I see something is too bushy I'll deleaf on day 14 day 10 whatever..

      Personally I've never understood defoliation, the plants spend alot of energy making leaves, the leaves then become a source of energy for the plant, when you take good healthy leaves from a plant it then has to use reserve energy from the roots to grow them again, if you grow inside your indoor garden should be dialed in where there is plenty of airflow and air exchange, powdery mildew and bud rot starts with stagnent air and high humidity, if you are growing inside and encounter that a complete rethink of your area is vital

    It's not so much stress as killing your solar panels leaves. Also once the plant feels winter is coming, the plant will use those fan leaves for food. Yes, if in dirt & the leaves are touching, thoes leaves should be clipped. Clip sucker branches, not leaves for best quality/yield, even colors

      So more fan leaves = more energy = more growth?
      It seems to make perfect sense to defoliate prior to flowering, but in veg fan leaves a burden to the plant or producer of energy/growth?

    • @kiddynamite3931
      @kiddynamite3931 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Americansikkunt Yes, most people think the buds are going to get more light, and swell. The fact is the fan leaves act like solar panels to the colas. When those last few weeks come, and the roots are no longer uptakeing the nutrients, the colas rely on the sugars from the fan leaves to feed the colas. I'll cut out all N at about week 6, which will cause the fan leaves to not only produce sugars as food, but will give ya some amazing fall colors. The sucker branches (the lower branches that only produce larf) are cut of, so that energy will swell your buds like crazy. 👍

If you snip off a couple of your fingers , would it stress you? Lol and if you get mildew cut em down and start over. If you don't have a good ipm then you need to get a good weekly spray like lost coast plant therapy spray and u will have a healthy grow. Tgats just my opinion that I think will help people. Like if you have a insect problem.
    Or you dont have your room dialed in.
    But from my experience.
    And from many experiments on this subject.
    And having my flower room completely dialed in.
    ( Because this is the stage that is important to me).
    And having a half brain.
    Which I mean, not going in and taking a third of your leaves all at once.
    And then expect your plant not to stress.
    But go in and take 3 or 4 leaves.
    Then wait a week or two and take another 3 or 4 leaves.
    Just to let a little more light to hit parts of the plant.
    Because if you have your temperature and humidity and your room completely dialed in.
    You shouldn't have to worry about mold and mildew.
    Anyway what I have seen in my grows.
    With taking or not taking leaves.
    Is it makes NO difference in what's important to me.

      Leaves a tiny new growth area that usually will become a 'popcorn' bud. Leave them and they will develop earlier than the uppermost ones. Watch and when ready, clip them off leaving a stump.
      Otherwise, removing all of them is stressful but old timers say it sends more available energy and nutes up to the new growth, producing bigger, better colas up top. So, up to the grower - or - use 2 sisters and remove fans and popcorn. On the other, just remove fans. Identical growth conditions will let the grower decide a preference. But caution - the lowest popcorn buds are somewhat shaded and nearer the growth media, thus close to moisture. This can cause mold or mildew so a careful watch and avoidance of unnecessary moisture is a good idea. When they are ready, remove them and wait a week to move up the plant. Feed CalMag that night.

      I have 2 outdoor plants in 5 gallon pots. Both plants are almost 6 ft tall but I found that I should have used a bigger pot as they are suffering from a little deficiency in nutrients. I gave them some fertilizer (bud booster, ) as I’m only a little into flower and didn’t want my nutrient issues to affect my plant too drastically. I cut off the worst of the branches and cloned them. I leave the leaves until they want to fall off themselves with a small tug or if they show signs of disease or chances to develop it, then I’ll remove them. I don’t remove them as soon as they start to turn yellow, as I let the plant take out the nutrients it needs from them

    I think using the term (Traumatizing) is a little bit over the top brother lol! I would say you create (little) stress when removing a few fan leaves! I mean there are people who Shwazay with GREAT results. And that involves stripping pretty much (EVERY) leaf on the plant. And they do that after the stretch in flower even. And then you see the same plants a week later and you almost can't even tell they where stripped. So I just kinda feel like that term isn't the most accurate way to describe the situation you cause by taking some fan leaves off. Most of the time when taking leaves off my plants won't even miss a beat. I'm sure it causes them something but I would say very minimal..........

    Is there any medicinal benefit to the leaves we remove during veg? I just give them to my worm bin, but wonder if there is any medicinal benefit if I made tea or something consumable out of the leaves of young plants.

      Juice them or add to a protein shake....but definitely a healthy green to incorporate in your diet.

      Dont consume your leaves if youre not going organic, any fertilizers or bug spray put on the plants id say throw them out

      Depends on when the leafs were trimmed. During flower or veg. I give all my leafs to my in-laws to make pho. They tell me it's better when I give them the leafs during flower 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

      I rinsed them, drained them, and put them in the freezer. When enough trimmed leaves clogs my freezer, I make ice water hash from the useless water leaves. It Is Good!! Not great, but not useless at all!! Puffing said hash, right now. :-)
