Hey Michael regardless of price point, which of the would you rather buy between these two and which do you think comes closer to the Sennheiser MKH 416?
I was leaning towards the NTG-3 until post-processing. Now I'm thinking the Deity is the one. I should have included both with post processing, because when I do, the Deity, for me, is the winner. *Which one do you think sounds better?*
In the beginning S mic 2 sounded bad. NTG3 has a very nice rich tone to it (but that might not be the best for all voices). Deity is a bit tinny in comparison (and seems to have a sharper higher end). But little bit of post processing and it's workable. I'd still go for the MKH 416 if I could over either of these, but as a poor filmmaker on the way to getting his first Mic, the S Mic 2 is a no-brainer (yes, I'm ordering it now. Thanks for the review!)
I've been using the predecessor to this microphone and have been very happy with it. From all the reviews, looks like they improved on this new model. Thanks for the review as I need a second one for my kit.
Thanks D. Yeah, very close to my fav mic - the NTG-3, not as deep. I also got the Deity Vmic Pro 3 (?) and was wary of it as it is has an internal rechargeable battery Hmmmm....then I found out the charge lasts something like 72 hours. Wow. Use that for my streaming setup and love it. It probably has the best natural sound (for my voice) of them all.
I've used the NTG3 mic for years and have always liked it... but will be looking at getting this S-Mic 2 as I do like the overall sound better for my video needs.
I don't know what to make of this - perhaps due to lack of notifications at different points? When you first switched, the Deity sounded much worse, but then magically improved to the point of being indistinguishable from the Rode. This happened more than once during the video. I don't know what to make of that, but clearly it CAN be as good as the Rode (though it never sounded better to me). Perhaps it just needs post-processing to reach the same quality as the Rode? If so, you have to consider how much your time is worth.
I always post process my audio, it takes about 20 seconds as I simply run a multiband compressor with a broadcast setting over it, so the time for me is irrelevant. I wish I would have showed both processed in the comparisons.
To me the complete audio novice, the (unprocessed) Diety sounded like old time radio. However the processed sound was substantial better. Since I was able to buy my Ntg3 via eBay for less than the Diety, I’ll count myself a winner, but can see the value of the Diety. Nice job ‘Jason’ you’ve been killing it lately. If I hadn’t been fighting the over reaction weather distractions (at least to my geographic location) I’d have commented sooner. Keep up the good work.
Hmmm...I also have an NTG-3, and I am doing a test of 9 different mics, including the NTG-3 and S-Mic 2. We'll see what the actual noise floor is...I am thinking the NTG-3 is going to be better.
I think you cant go wrong with either. Both sounds good on headphones with and without 7.1 dolby. Not going to name that is mention many times, but if you stay with the ntg you got a nice backup. Nice comparision i love the story read and the minimal specs show that didnt took long i really had to stop the video to watch. Great video again as always shared on linkedin.
I think I may use the Deity for a while. I always post process my sound with a simple Broadcast compression. I am currently thinking the Deity wins, and wish I had shown that in the video.
They both sound great. The Rode NTG3 gives off a bit more in the Low-End Frequency and the Deity a bit more in the High End. To me, the Rode sounds a bit better (RAW) but a bit of Editing will make the Deity sound amazing of course like the way you did in the video. But for that price, you really can't beat it. It's definitely worth it for someone who on a budget and wants to improve their audio quality
I totally agree with your conclusion at about 6:00. I'm glad I wasn't just hearing things when I thought the same thing. Well, actually I guess I was just hearing things, but you know what I mean. 🙂
Thanks Gene. In the end, it’s all about what sounds right to our ears, and from all these comments, we all hear things slightly differently, or, it’s possible it’s like coffee or tea, and ones tastes. Still undecided, and I think I need to do another test of both processed the same. Or, I could just quit messing around with this and make another video. 😁
I think the Rode sound more fuller .. I know it's base heavy but sometimes certain voices need a boost in the right direction. Personally I think the Rode suits your voice much better and worth the little extra it costs. I do think calling the Rode VMP+ a piece of crap was a bit harsh as it's great for what it's built for a quick fix camera topper for R'n'G.
Interesting. When you switched to the Deity, I thought it made your voice sound more nasally, and not as pleasant at least at first. The deity seemed to sound different at different points in the video (without the post processing). I thought the ntg 3 sounded nicer, but hey it could be that my ears were tricked from hearing the ntg 3 from the start of the video with how it boosted the low end in your voice.
For sure. The NTG-3 definitely produces better lows for my voice. I usually do some mild post-processing on both, so when I end up with pretty much the same thing.
Pretty hard to beat the NTG3 in general.. just rugged and warm sounding. The Diety does sound a bit thin for my taste. But as you mention... a tweak here and there and they sound pretty similar.
Yeah, I love the NTG3 and using it for years. But for the $$$, if I were looking at new, I definitely would get the Deity rather than drop $700 if I were on a budget.
@@BasicFilmmaker Yeah I found an open box ...so I will give it a spin. I already have a Beyer Dynamic which I find pretty decent. I am always leery about these Chinese mics ... some people from local music shops have told me that the capsule .. specifically the diaphragm... can sometimes loose its suppleness and crack ...These things do tend to go through hell and back with humidity and temp changes fairly regularly... so in some respects it is good to save some coin but not if the product has a shorter lifespan. Now in this case the Diety mic has a 5 year warranty .. assume modestly limited... so I guess if you ran into issue you'd know within a couple years with regular use. But generally you cannot go wrong with the Rode. Even used they are pretty pricey. Not sure what the warranty on the rode is but they are battle tested .
I just got my first affiliate money $2.63 I'm rolling with the big dogs now. I bet with all the money you make from youtube you can probably pay for 2% of what you spend making the videos. Now that is big time. I'm on my third experiment on my channel. I like my last video, I think the B-roll helps a lot. It's not taking as much time as I expected now that I have my studio up and running.
To me, the NTG-3 sounds warmer and richer, kind of a full sound in comparison to the Deity (I guess it's a Roman one, Greeks don't sound like that for sure). Somehow, as someone else has mentioned, the Deity changed from sounding a bit weird at first to a better sound a bit later. But anyway, it sounds a bit more "radio-esque", like missing some of the frequencies or something. Now, one it's processed, they look very alike.
Deity sounded better had more clarity and boosted high end I think sounded richer.Ntg3 has more bass to my ears, slightly lower pattern still nice ...listened with monitor reference noise cancelling headphones.
Unless the companies want you to send them back, I'd cheerfully, gleefully, yea even enthusiastically, accept any of the 'junk' products that didn't meet your expectations as it's a step up from the $30 mic I have. (including paying shipping)
I've been seriously considering an eBay "Fire Sale", but I just don't have the time to ship over 30 different products, ranging from just OK to spectacular (i have like 3 sets of certain things). If I could just dump everything into one box and do an "all or nothing" thing I might consider it though.
I got the original deity following your first review and haven't looked back. It is perfection! Also, Rode sucks. I am never buying another Rode product. Their stuff doesn't work and they don't have any support--this NTG3 is the best I've ever heard from Rode and it didn't hold up in post. Also, if you are insane and purchase Rode products, don't buy them from Amazon because products from Amazon aren't supported. Check the Rode website.
Yeah. I haven’t had a problem with RØDE, but that Amazon thing is not cool. Part of my agreeing to do a review of something includes checking out the manufacturers support and if they don’t, I don’t. The Amazon thing doesn’t sit well with me at all.
Damon Bowe Hey, I don’t think you got that quite right. Amazon.com is an authorized RØDE dealer. The problem is third party sellers on amazon. And that includes items sold by a third party but fulfilled by Amazon. Understanding this distinction is good advice for any Amazon purchase.

I've been using the ntg2 for many many years. I like it. Does the job. (Short films) I haven't upgraded mainly because of cost. But this deity seems to be right around my budget. Would you consider this a wise upgrade from my ntg2. Lastly Whoever thumbs down your vids are complete buttholes. Thanks!
A very wise upgrade, but take note, like other higher end mics, this doesn’t have a battery for power like the NTG-2, which means your camera or the recorder you hook to has to be able to supply phantom power to the mic. This is not unusual, such as my NTG-3, no battery.
p.s.LOL! Buttholes comment. I expected at least two people would not like this video, those I referred to in the video. As far as all the others, no idea. 😁
The Deity is really a solid build, so I assume is built good for this, but haven't tested it, nor have I tested NTG3 in very humid climates, so I don't know. I know their previous mic, the original Deity, I threw in a frickin toilet in the video, dried it out, and it worked.
Ah. That is a humid place. Yes, the NTG3 is touted to be better than most. Had one for years and used all over the place...I guess the fact that it's never failed me says it all.
Both sound good with your voice! And thanks for the opening with the little Aputure light in there, made me literally LOL!
That was great !
Was fun! Thank you!
Honestly, both sound good, but I think the NTG3 has slightly more bass, and sounds ‘warmer’.
It does to me too, although it seems to lose some of the mids and highs. Should have compared both processed too.
The NTG3 ADDS some bass to make it sound better. The Deity sounds clean and therefore better.
Hey Michael regardless of price point, which of the would you rather buy between these two and which do you think comes closer to the Sennheiser MKH 416?

Deity.
In my humble opinion, the NTG3 has a more robust/rich tone where the Deity seems to lean a bit more towards the higher frequencies.
I always post process my sound with a simple Broadcast compression. I am currently thinking the Deity wins, and wish I had shown that in the video.
Rode, of course, as it is just physically different. yes, all this unimportant stuff youd id not mentioned.
Thank you for the vote of confidence and the switch-over sir, it means a great deal to us !
Thank you! If it works, I use it, and this definitely works!
Enjoyed the video, love your quirky presentation style, looks like you've got a winner there with the Deity mic
Thanks Perspective Caribbean!

What's your thoughts on azden SGM 250
Mine or Ds? I don’t have the Azden. 👍
agreed on the low-end response difference, but that does go away after your post-processing.
Should’ve compared both with the post processed sound.
I've used the NTG3 mic for years and have always liked it... but will be looking at getting this S-Mic 2 as I do like the overall sound better for my video needs.
Both are really nice, and I wouldn't trade my NTG3 ever.

He was.

I own 2 NTG3's..So how can a *half priced* mic have a lower noise floor :-(

I think I may use the Deity for a while. I always post process my sound with a simple Broadcast compression. I am currently thinking the Deity wins, and wish I had shown that in the video.

True that. Between the two, it’s a toss up. Not throwing away my NTG3 anytime soon. 😁
The Deity sounds brighter on the raw audio and the Rode more muddy, after processing I'd pick the Deity for sure.
That's where I'm leaning William.
Very happy with the Deity S-Mic 2 for voice-over.
👍
Both sounds very different actually. It's gonna depends on your speakers at the end, but for quality, Rode NTG3 is way ahead.
Thanks!

DEITY S-MIC 2 sounded tinny to me in the raw test , felt that the Rode was warmer with a little more bass
