It sounds like your teacher is teaching you how to do synthesis, which is part of the OLD rubric (pre-2017). You CAN get the point for synthesizing, but you need to be doing it throughout your essay, not just in one spot (that's how it used to be). But on the current rubric, there are a variety of ways you can earn the complexity point. Drawing connections to other time periods or geographical areas is one. Analyzing multiple variables is another. Check the rubric for all the ways to earn it.
Another way to earn a complexity point is to EXPAND THE PROMPT. For example, if the prompt asks for economic & political changes that caused x in y period, then also talking about social changes with the same coverage may qualify.

No, you will be given the 55 questions, which you can't move to a previous question once you move forward. You will also be given 5 required SAQs and the DBQ. Hopes this helps!
