Great Britain is the name of the large island that forms most of England, Scotland and Wales (but not immediately adjacent islands like the Isle of Wight, Orkney and Anglesey).
However Great Britain is often used in figures of speech to include those English, Scottish and Welsh islands as it's simpler to say eg. Britain and British.
The full name of the country - itself rarely used as it's such a mouthful and one of the longest full names of any country in the world - is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which is pretty self explanatory.
As an example, at the Olympics that often gets shortened to GB+NI, or more frequently Team GB. All because the long name is a mouthful and not so easy to brand.
(Plus of course, every person born in Northern Ireland is automatically entitled to both British and Irish citizenship, if they so wish...so some Northern Irish sportspeople, such as Rory McIlroy, choose to represent the Republic of Ireland at the Olympics, despite being from Northern Ireland, which itself is part of the UK).
To be fair Thom, it's not easy and we also gloss over teaching this in schools in place of instead banging on about say...algebra 😅
