      I don't think he's that underrated. When he gets a dome to play in and he gets to work with the script in the flow of the passing offense, he usually performs very well and the offense can put up a load of points. Much like what JT mentions in the end, the Chargers didn't pressure and their back end didn't take care of business so Goff was cooking all day. Which is the story of much of the Lions defenses they have played on schedule. May sound under handed but what does that matter if the Lions get the 1st seed and gets to play at home in a dome game in January?

    My only thought on Goff throwing it away on 4th down, and obviously I am not a pro QB so feel free to tell me I’m wrong, is when you’re at the 1 I’d rather he throw it away and have the opposing offense start there than throw an int into the endzone to start them at the 25. A sack is worse too but a bit more negligible.
    The Lions have done this before, I think they may be coaching Goff to not force plays on 4th down at the goal line
    Otherwise, fantastic analysis as always!

    • @Aaron-kj8dv
      @Aaron-kj8dv 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I'm 100% sure that's what he was was thinking. I think it was Jonah Jackson who just sat there while the DT blew by him and the play couldn't develop.

    • @jessesteeves9876
      @jessesteeves9876 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Yeah this is my exact thought, if you don't get a pick six, you get a touchback, or a sack in significantly better field position than the goal line. Analytically, you have to factor in the odds of getting a safety against the very slim odds of getting a complete pass.

    • @Booeyyb
      @Booeyyb 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s what I was thinking. That’s a huge difference and the chance of him throwing a puck there was higher than a TD.

    That 4th down play in the end zone he threw it away because there was no option. Giving up the ball near the goal line is better than a touch back, sack or maybe a pick 6. I see that at more of a smart play by Goff. He had nothing, has a DT coming untouched and it looked like the DBs were in great protection.

      @@larkwyll7351Ben Johnson is the play caller he doesn’t come up with all the plays lol. He has an entire team that helps him with that including guys that came from the college scene in the coaching staff. His job is to coordinate which is what he does extremely well but please don’t give all the credit to him. Dan Campbell’s vision is also the biggest reason why this way of calling was accepted and why he got the job in the first place.
      Not even mentioning the fact that the biggest reason why this offense is so good are the players.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@larkwyll7351 I think what he means is that the overall design and vision of the offense playbook comes from Dan but is also (thankfully) shared by Ben Johnson. Where Ben is making his money is not the planned scripted stuff that is on the weekly gameplan. But how he sequences his plays and adapting with creative solutions when the defense tries to counter based on what they see early on. Its a big reason how Shane Steichen stood out as a play caller for the Eagles offense, got the HC job with the Colts and is showing those play calling qualities calling the offense for them.

    That throwaway on fourth town would probably be a pick six if he tried to do anything fancy. If he did try to thread it in there and got a pick six, we’d be saying why didn’t he just throw it away. 🤷‍♂️

      @user-yg5yw9dq6p 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I was going to mention this as well. You also have to remember that this is in the first quarter with the Lions ahead by seven. There is absolutely no reason to take a foolish risk here. You also cannot be sacked here. He had to throw it away as there was no one open.
      Leaving the Chargers at the one is not a bad result.
      Also, at this time the Chargers offence was not really clicking yet.

    I feel like Goff is more direct a talent based on his weapons, than a star himself. That’s what makes him underrated and great. He understands his throws, he understands his receives and plays, and can accurately use the tools. He’s not breakout, he’s not flashy, he just knows how to work cleanly with the team chemistry.

    Goff isn’t escaping any pressure, doesn’t it make more sense to throw the ball away, forcing the chargers to start their drive in the end zone? Instead of possibly throwing a pick and them at least starting on the 25. Or getting sacked, forced fumble? Anything could’ve happened, although it’s not ideal, I like that he just throws it away and eliminates any further risk.

    I don't know if I buy your analysis of the fourth down throw-away. That sets up one of the few (if not the only) stops of the night by either team.
    The odds of scoring from inside your own 1 are incredibly low. If he eats a sack there starting a drive at your own 7 the playbook opens up.
    99% of the time I just take what you say as gospel, but to me this feels like a tastes and preferences type decision.

    Goff is good. But he’s not great. He misses HOME RUN shots to wide open guys because he just doesn’t see the field well enough. His ceiling is division round playoffs, maybe NFC championship. But if we want the Super Bowl, we need a GREAT quarterback, not just a good one.

      Wild take. Our boy Goff has been to the SUPERBOWL. What are you smoking my man? I was gonna say I want some, but after thinking about it, definitely don't

      @@doctordubspt91 one bad game. Next week if we win and goff that's for over 300 yards I won't waste my timing proving a point off a single game. Sucks, we lost. Happens. Has happened a lot

    Imagine if the Lions didn't have a cake schedule and played real teams this year; unfortunately, they are walking straight to the playoffs and maybe the #1 seed simply because of a weak schedule. Come playoffs they have to play against real teams,

      That's why the Lions need the #1 seed. If they end up with the #2 or #3 seed they'll have to beat both SF and Philly but with the #1 seed they'll only have to beat 1 of them. They're not winning the NFCCG at Philly, at Ford Field maybe.

      Week 1 Kansas City Chiefs on the road isn't a cake walk matchup. They're beating the teams on their schedule it's not in their control which teams are good.

      That easy schedule is just the rest of their division. Can't blame them for that

      The Lions will just keep beating whoever is put in front of them. Bucs and the Falcons were playing pretty well when the Lions beat them both 20 - 6.
      As ourCoach says winning in the NFL, especially on the road, is hard and we don’t have to apologize for who we beat and how.
