"No parent should have to bury their child."
The Catholic Monarchs had such high plans for Juan. They wanted the House of Trastamara to cease being "the house of bastards" and to not rule only Iberia but the whole of Western Europe. This was the main motive behind Ferdinand's second marriage.
Isabella never recovered from Juan's passing. From then on, she was merely a shadow of her former self, slowly edging towards passing.

This was utterly heart wrenching. The actors did an amazing job hitting home the emotion the viewers were ment to feel. It's so sad that this wont be the last time that they have to watch their child die before them. I love Isabella's line. ''God gave him to me and God took him away...'' such a heart breaking scene all around.

It must be the worst to look in the eyes of your dying child. Especially when it was the future of your realm. What a relieve in heaven must it have been for Fernando and Isabella that Juanas child Carlos/ Charles V.was such a strong ruler.
This was great acting. I am super pissed that this is not available in my country with subtitles or dubbed (only illegal you can see it somewhere). Every shitty series from the US they show on TV or put it in the streaming services but not this. 😑😑😑😑😑

I think it still came as a shock because after childhood he didn't really have serious illnesses that would put his life really in danger. Isabella and Ferdinand had great plans for him because they expected him to survive them and rule in Spain. Or at least live long enough to father some sons and secure the line. I think the fact that they let the second heir, Infanta Isabella, remain unmarried so long in her twenties, in her most fertile years, shows that they didn't really calculate with the possibility that she could inherit because John dies. If they had constantly been in fear for John's life, I think they would have married her off the moment she became a widow at 20, no matter how sad or grieving she was.
In the Middle Ages, once a child survived to adulthood, the chance of death at any time dropped a lot. Even with a weak constitution, if someone survived children sicknesses it was expected that a high born person could do well in life later (aka reach 40) if wars or plagues didn't take him. Especially if he was always well-fed and had doctors around him like John. Actually Philip II was also a week child and teenager who was seriously ill very often (his father in fact feared he would end up like John) but then reach 70 later in life.

@@Lily1127channel well, it was his parents' wishful thinking. But according to chronicles of that time, unlike his parents, nobles & advicers wondered if he'd live long & if he did what kind of king he'd be, being concerned about his health. He had been born with a cleft lip & probably palate... although sometimes that can mean nothing, most of the time they're just symptoms of other underlying syndromes. No wonder they tried having another boy, but no luck.

It’s because the Y chromosome is more susceptible to genetic diseases. The royals are pretty much all incestrous-marrying close cousins, so most of the genetic ailments were passed down to male heirs, making their bodies much weaker, but females tend to survive it more. It has nothing to do with female bodies being stronger-they aren’t. In fact on equal playing field it’s much more likely that if a woman takes on a man’s job she is more likely to get injured and fall sick and die first, that was the case with for example Isabel. Women just instinctively know when to stop doing what they are doing to avoid stress and drop what they are doing if it overtakes them for self preservation, but if they cannot avoid stress and are constantly under it, they don’t handle it nearly as well as men do and don’t last as long.

@@luceafarul579 Women have greater life expectancy than men and they are biologically stronger than men. They don't fall sick easily. Even if they take birth premature there is highly likely chance they would survive over male premature baby.
