      @@clairekennedy7719 not really. Doesn't matter how good cpu precision is, if they are predictable, then you can exploit them. That's why playing against cpus can make you worse at playing actual people. People adapt.

    I for the life of me could not get an IDJ from neutral at normal speed.
    However, doing it by buffering the first jump out of anything makes it SO much easier, I didn't even need L for jump anymore.
    For example, at the near end of any move's lag, Press Y, then Y + A.

      This is an important tech for falco but yes it’s much easier to buffer the first jump you can get perfect with just one jump button. But that’s only mid combo doing it in neutral is where you could need different controls

    little note bout this tech, a short hop aerial does less damage than a full hop / double jump aerial. That means it also makes you win a few % and I think this is a kinda interesting point with characters that struggle in wracking % or killing.

    When you have to double jump with specific requirements like this, tap jump actually works pretty well. You want to full hop here, and using two buttons instead of control stick can decrease consistency by spending more energy on timing it.

    When i started using a pro-controller i put jump on L because i was like why tf would i waste 4 potential inputs on just grab and shield? I think its pretty useful

    Just a note on this: IDJ into aerials means that the aerial comes out 3 frames faster because it avoids having to wait for the jumpsquat animation to end in a regular full hop. You end up with roughly the same height with a 3 frame advantage, thereby opening up a large number of potential, previously undiscovered combos. Also, the way to know that you're doing this correct is to look for the double jump circle that appear. It should appear right at ground level, and no higher. Lastly, you can also buffer the first jump during a character animation, then initiate the second jump as soon as jump squat starts, which is much easier in certain situations.

    Did you know Sheik can actually hit a good chunk of characters with a reverse pivot-cancelled f-tilt? As in a pivot cancelled f-tilt, but you face away from the opponent rather than towards them? It also launches the opponent towards Sheik when she does this, too. I'm still not too sure if it's useful, but it might be something to look into.

    Tap jump makes this trivial, as it can be buffered. I suggest learning tap jump guys. This is a pretty crucial tech. It allows more combos with heavies such as bowser and incineroar and glass cannons like jigglypuff, pichu, sheik, etc.

    Ivysaur can use this tech too. If you grab your opponent at 0%, you can Down Throw -> IDJ Nair -> Up Air -> Up Air or Down Throw -> IDJ Nair -> Nair -> Up B

    I’ve been using this with Byleth and Marth. Turned Tap Jump on just to use it. For Byleth I use it in neutral and get people with the double fair all the time. Not to mention it gives the hitbox a little more vertical coverage. With Marth I’ve been using IDJ Uair OOS as an alternative to up b at higher percents. Since you can shift your momentum so much backwards, it seems way safer than dolphin slash.

    As a Peach player, this is just another thing to practice lol. I actually use this tech in conjunction with float-canceling (IDJCFF?) to give her just a bit more range when doing something like bair. It's a lot easy to do after already inputting something because you can actually buffer an IDJ during endlag or landing lag.

    I feel like learning this tech is like learning how to wave dash in melee. It’s weird at first, but once you have timing, you just gave yourself more options.

    I'm wanting to use both gamecube triggers for jumping and special for short-hop needles, but I think it will take about 1,000 hours of game play to become as proficient with a face button as shield. 20 years of having shields on trigger buttons is not easy to overcome. They say it takes 1,000 hours to master a new skill. Edit: It may be easier to just switch to tilt jump for needle combos and just deal with the periodic unintended IDJ.

    Throw combo for sheik: down throw -> idj fair -> drag-down up air -> imagination. Big damage nearly every time.

    a cool application to this is in gannons fair. With a normal full hop fair you have a good amount of landing lag, but with IDJ it has no lag and reaches the same height making it a better option. This is true for DKs fair aswell.

    Have jump set to a shoulder button, tap jump on x or y as if you were short hopping and then immediately after or at the same time input a jump on the shoulder button, this the easiest way to do a IDJ

    If you change your controls and haven't done World of Light, it's a pretty good excuse to kill two birds with one stone.
    Forty hours of that slog will commit the new scheme to muscle memory, and you will get all the spirits too.
    A lot of the World of Light battle mechanics are strange, so it's usually bad for practicing Smash in general. However, for something as basic as (re)learning the control scheme, it's fine.

    Meta Knights and Bayos have been doing this for a long time. Meta knight for plenty of uair starters and extensions, and Bayo for utilt bair pre and post 8.0.0

    I can't imagine it having too much utility for the Shotos, more so Ryu than Ken but they're ground based most of the time so might have to practice it with Ken nair > up air strings

    All my high level Falco mains stand up. We were on the wave waaay before everyone just found out about this 😂. The common term is “active hop” but I call it the Falco hop because that’s the character that this tech originated with. Up throw, “Falco hop” uair, drag down nair, whatever, whatever lol. Can also do it after up tilt but the window is between 20-35%

    This tech is really useful for falco, since some percentages you can do up tilt into IDJ up-air, and still being that height can get another up-air
    or on tri plat follow ups

    HUGE TIP FOR IDJ:
    You can buffer your first jump super early when you’re in endlag, giving you a 4 frame window to time your second jump.
    This can be when landing, after a tilt, after a throw, after a roll, etc.
    So doing idj is super practical and pretty easy after something like sheik f tilt but becomes much harder if you want to use it from a standing position.
    I have been doing this forever with bowser jr and didn’t even know it was a “tech” lol
    (Like so void can see. I really hope it helps him out)

    Everyone said ZSS ladders weren’t possible in the early stages of Ultimate but i learned a long while back being a a lab rat that IDJ makes her ladder combos very consistent.

      It's actually not the same thing. Double tapping jump isn't as frame perfect as doing the inputs for idj. You can see the white circle almost at ground level when doing idj

    Let’s just say with sheik, you have a quarter of a second to jump twice.
    Also void, I found that doing a full hop input instead of short hop to start is easier.

    I don’t think this will ever be consistent enough to be used a lot. I’m a pro player and labbing this I just couldn’t get this consistently. Unless someone can do it with at least a 50% success rate I can’t imagine it’s going to be a game changer. Maybe for tap jump users but I don’t use tap jump and I didn’t try it.

      @@lxvi2441 Tap jump is such a flawed solution that's more of a workaround than anything. I shouldn't have to fight the controls in order to express what I want to do. Having two designated buttons would lower the skill ceiling for casuals while not penalizing top players' options.
      Instead of jumping through all these hoops - changing your controls, burning your double jump, learning how to play with tap jump, etc. - nintendo could just give us 2 separate buttons and the problem would be solved.
      The point of controls is so that you can express yourself through your character. Better controls = better means of expressing yourself. So if you're telling me I have to grind hours to learn the exact timing of a set of inputs just so I can get instant full hop aerials, then that's a barrier that prevents me from expressing what I want to do in-game.

      YAMAHA-MEHA yessir it's called a skill barrier. tap jump works just fine as you can use it as a short hop or full hop. grind for six hours and learn the input, it's still possible. execution barriers can be passed, it's what separates good players from bad players

You are literally masquerading a design flaw(making a button function as you want it to shouldn't require skill and hours long grinding sessions ) as an intended skill barrier made by the devs. Lol no. Otherwise they wouldn't have developed the instant short hop mechanic in the first place if that were the case. It's not cool to be a bootlicker you know...

      Waterblade knights it's not being a bootlicker lmao. the devs didn't put it in there they just didn't see a reason to make an entire button dedicated to short hopping when the mechanic of the jump button already has short hop ingrained into it. it's not a design flaw either. it's something smash has lived with for 23 years and we'll continue with it. you can't expect the devs to put it in when it's a niche thing. they don't pander to the competitive community at all and that's their decision. just figure out how to do the mechanic you want properly instead of waiting weeks for the devs

    Joker can use ldj to get up air dragdown extensions especially on platforms. I've been using r jump for both this and rar bairs for a while now.

    Links use idj for boomerang fair combo because at some % and characters we can undershoot our fair and we miss the combo

    I’ve done this before with joker and i started labbing combos but i didnt think they were any good so i didnt think this was any good, its alot easier out of throws and if u use stick jump.
