How can it be 6 years since someone last commented on this video? Tom Waits is one of those performers who elevated themselves into a different category. When the Pogues were on tour in America, they listened to 'Rain Dogs' on repeat. That is the sort of artist he is. Commercial? Fuck no. An exceptional talent? Fuck yes.
I don't see how a Tom Waits fan can NOT love this. It's pure eccentricity, obviously fun for the performers, and vastly entertaining...what do you want him to act like - Coldplay?
this was a rare time to see Tom do his thing, live. the studio recorded version on CD is more refined, & tweaked. This is like theater. A performance piece. Really fantastic. Striped to the bone, purer, gutsy, raw.
I've seen him in Paris in 1987 (or 86), and made lot of photos, it was an amazing incredible wonderfull show... I remember when he open an umbrella and lot of silver paper fall around all stage... like rain, "rain's dog" of course!. Great great man!
This is from the live album Big Time. When I was I high school I rented the vhs tape from I Luv Video. There was only 3 copies in the entire city. Probably rented it 50 times, so eventually they just let me keep it.
Love it and him too. I'm Romani (Gypsy) singer /dancer performed with with Eugene Hutz Gogol Bordello.... and this music reminds me of ours especially near end. Love ya Tom. Tom if ya come to NYC and do this number invite me in stage. I still perform. I have this full show on VHS ♥️
Rain Dogs is the greatest beginning to end musical experience in the history of music! I swear it is! I bought this record when it first came out without knowing who Tom Waits was and I have listened to it a minimum of a 1,000 times. I still don't know all the lyrics because he swallows a lot of his words, and the print is so tiny in the cd insert that you need a magnifying glass to read it.I never tire of this record! It's like he stole the soundtrack of my thoughts when I was napping.
Thanks for posting this. It is a song with so much cacophony that makes for the right blend to make you a little disturbed but in a good way. Love tom and he never ceases to amaze me. Again, thanks for posting this! Peace out!

Top of the Tops! I first heard Tom Waits at a dinner party Saturday night. I loved him and where have I been? lol I admire talent in all aspects such as Cirque du Soleil, too. Toms singing and music reminds me of Cirque, which is a great thing!!! I put both in the ten best ever!!!
"Oh How We Danced" is the opener of the Anniversary Waltz which they used to play at Jewish weddings before they played hip-hop. It's a gorgeous waltz and Tom makes good use of the quote here.
A truly unique and inimitable talent. There will never be another like him. Navvy51 said "music to get drunk by", oh yes, and what fun! Happy 60th, Tom.

It doesn´t get any better than this. This guy is impressive, great singer, great writter, great actor, and I just found out he is a great dancer too!. He excels at evrything he does, Tom Waits for life!!!!
..."Is this kezmer music?"...better to ask "is there any genre he hasn't touched, visited, seduced, twisted, chewed-up and spit out morphed?"....an acid nightmare chameleon....simply unbelievable...
Tom at his enigmatic best. With a voice like granite. A Yiddish dance of splendour. The band play their instruments playfully to create sound just the right side of madcap.
Im not english mother tongue so I don't understand the words at first listen . When I first heard this song 5 years ago, it sounded to me like a villain song from a Tim Burton movie lol I fell in love
It's from the Big Time movie, which I guess is out of print. So either have to track down a VHS copy or find a torrent somewhere. A lot of it is on YT though in parts.
The best indicator of musical genius is longevity. I've been absolutely loving TW's music for almost 34 years. Almost as long as I've been loving Brian Wilson, Igor Stravinsky and Jimi Hendrix. Anyone who doesn't acknowledge Tom's prodigious talent and utter dedication to his craft is a complete tool and not to be trusted.
His music is influenced by blues, jazz, even a little vaudeville and rock; he played in an R&B band in his early years, and he's won a few awards for Best Folk Album. Like others have said, it's very difficult to categorize him. He pretty much defines his own genre of music, and has remained true to it for years.
Tom Waits is just one of those people that, whenever I remember he exists and listen to his music, I'm happy.

Same here. Sorry for replying 4 yrs later but..

This comment cracks me up everytime I come back to this song. Which is often.

Superb
This is quite possibly the best live performance of all time. Just look at the way he moves!
Agreed

This man always manages to send chills down my spine.
Tom Waits remains, in my opinion, on of the greatest artists ever to have walked the Earth.
Tom Waits is a whole other musical genre and he has it all to himself. Performance art mixed with a unique musical style.
He just doesn't put on a show, he puts on an experience.

Inside a broken clock
Splashing the wine
With all the rain dogs
Taxi, we'd rather walk
Huddle a doorway with the Rain Dogs
For I am a Rain Dog, too
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away
All of the lights
We've always been out of our minds
The rum pours strong and thin
Beat out the dustman
With the rain dogs
Aboard a shipwreck train
Give my umbrella to the Rain Dogs
For I am a Rain Dog too
Oh, how we danced with the
Rose of Tralee
Her long hair black as a raven
Oh, how we danced and you
Whispered to me
You'll never be going back home
You'll never be going back home
Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away
All of the lights
We've always been out of our minds
