- Be your own breast advocate! Having a BI-RADS 3 (“Probaby Benign”)mammogram. You’re likely asking yourself, is it or is it not benign or non-cancerous. This designation can be very frustrating because it is usually followed by a recommendation for 6 month follow up. The anxiety may be too great at the thought of hurrying up to wait. Usually that is based on careful review by the radiologist and National standards and guidelines However, if you’re still concerned make sure you see your doctor that ordered the imaging and have a discussion about the next best approach . In addition, you may ask for a referral to a Breast Surgeon. If you’re still not satisfied, seek a 2nd or 3rd opinion.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis, and the second most common cause of cancer deaths among women in Georgia.
Early detection is key!
• There are four simple steps to early detection:
1. Know your risk: Talk to your doctor about your personal risk factors. Talk with your family to learn about your family health history.
2. Get screened: Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40, and clinical breast exams at least every 3 years starting at age 20 and every year starting at 40. Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at higher risk for breast cancer.
3. Know what is normal for you: “If you see something, say something!”
Know how your breasts look and feel. Report any changes to your doctor. If you notice any lumps, redness, warmth, dimpling, or puckering, tell your doctor.
4. Make healthy lifestyle choices: Be sure to eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and limit your alcohol intake.became very important to me to promote breast cancer awareness through community outreach, advocacy, and education

Hello, Doc. What will happen if you will wait for 6 months follow-up checkup after birads 3 classification from ultrasound? Is mammogram needed?
HI..DOCTOR ..i m 29 years old and i have pain in my right side breast arm leg also but when i went to a doctor she told me about sonomammography when i got my report there is no symptoms of any birads category in my right breast but in my left breast there is bi rads category 3 and doctor ask me to follow up but i have always pain in my both breast and also when doctor check there is discharge come in my both breasts not regularly but when doctor check only then discharge come and my maternal aunt was also died with breast cancer ..please tell me doctor what i do ...

Hello, I just came across your video and I'm 37 an I had a mammogram and ultrasound and I'm also a Bi-rads 3 and was told to come back in six months to see if the tumor has changed or grown. I have two sisters who both have had breast cancer. One of my sisters was 39 the first time she had then again at the age 44. She is now 46 and my other sister was 41 when she was diagnosed now she's 42 and just finished radiation treatments in November. How can I get the specialist to do a biopsy on me? I don't want to wait 6 months longer with this tumor in my breast. My two older sisters also had cancer in the left breast which is where my tumor is. What should I do? Thank you

I have a categorie of birads 3 due to a bump on my right breast; I'm 21 year old, so doctors don't consider it something to worry about.
However, on last August the size of it was 2 x 3 x 4mm
And now, it's size is 7.6 x 4.6 x 7.4 mm
Is it a concerning increase of its size ? Or it continues being something "probably bring" ?

Birads 3 for calcifications ? I think calcifications are benign (Bi 2) or Suspicious (Bi 4 minimum = biopsy )
How about if you dont know your family health history? Im adopted and i just had my mammo and sono birads 3.

Im 25 and I discovered a lump in my right breast a month ago along with breast pain. I went to my physician and she referred me to get an ultrasound. I received my results yesterday and I was rated a Bi-rads 3. I am less anxious now but at the same time confused because there is so much uncertainty in that category. I don’t have any history of breast cancer in my family but I just want to stop wondering what this lump is and why im having so much pain. I don’t see my doctor for two weeks so here I am searching TH-cam and google for support. Good luck to all on this journey ! 🙏🏾
I would seek a 2nd opinion for a biopsy. You deserve to know what this is and why it’s there now without having to wait for 6 months to get further clarification.

It doesn't mean it's a higher score it just means that it's in a different category that's how they categories birad it's not a higher score
Hello, 2 years ago I had stage 2b breast cancer surgery. about 6 months ago a small bump appeared, barely noticeable, after 3 months it became larger, I did an ultrasound, they said birads 3 and that it was granuloma, but there were 3 bumps. Another 3 months have passed, I see that 2 bumps have become visually larger, but they sometimes decrease and sometimes become inflamed and I want to go for an ultrasound more and more. Tell me, I read that granulomas can increase in size and hurt when touched over time, could it be that these 3 lumps are cancer that has relapsed again? more precisely, if education has become larger than before, is it bad? but at the same time, I read that granulomas can grow gradually

Birads 3 solid nodule 0.7cmto0.6 cm in usg scan report next further process tell me
They don't usually do a biopsy unless it's a birad 4 or your imaging has come back the second time with a change of stability. I know I'm in a birad I've had this explain
Teresa Nigro BI-RADS 3 is my least favorite category as a surgeon. It’s not that it’s more serious, it’s just that the recommendation is automatically designated “probably benign”. Patients usually ask out of justified frustration, “Well is it or isn’t it benign?” My response is always the only way to find out is to either observe for 6 months or biopsy now. I’m sure you got some pushback because it’s recommended to wait 6 months since it’s not currently “suspicious” but you can always ask for a 2nd opinion. Was this helpful?
@@dr.aprilspencer2444 thank you for the response. A month ago I was a birad 2 after a second opinion a week ago I was put into a birad 3 and it was strongly recommended that I return in 3 months to see if there is change. I'm so frustrated and worried. The radiologist are not sure about anything 😔.

Teresa Nigro if they both appeared stable, they likely won’t recommend a biopsy unless you insist upon it. Otherwise, the recommendation will be for repeat imaging and clinical breast exam (CBE) in 6 mos to assess for continued stability vs a change. If there is a change on repeat imaging or on the CBE, the radiology department will likely recommend a biopsy at that point.

BI-RADS 3 means “probably benign”. Make sure you F/U with a repeat MGM within 6 months from your last MGM

Was wondering if you can enlighten me if there can be any connect with me being categorized with birads3 last december and now i noticed i have a bald spot on my head, an alopecia type of bald spot? Im only 35 and my ff.up mammo will still be on june (6mos). I also just recently found out i have history of breast cancer in my family by asking my aunt which i didnt tell my surgeon. Thanks for your question. I wanted To follow up with you regarding your abnormal mammogram and your recent alopecia from several months ago. As a woman I know it must be very frustrated to suffer with any hair loss but to also have alopecia while having a abnormal mammogram must be extremely challenging to have to deal with both of those issues at one time. However we have not seen a correlation in an abnormal mammogram and alopecia. What’s important is when you see your primary care doctor you have them check your electrolytes sometimes low electrolytes can be associated with hair loss and also stress just as important of course is to make sure you get your follow up mammogram. Make sure it’s 3-D and you may need to get a diagnostic mammogram with a take extra views to reevaluate the abnormal area in your breast.
These 4 vitamin deficiencies can cause hair loss:
Not eating enough iron-rich foods, such as red meat, seafood, and beans
Blood loss from ulcers
Certain cancers, such as colon cancer
Vitamin D: When vitamin D is low, the hair may thin or stop growing.
Zinc: Zinc deficiency can cause similar hair loss to iron and may also damage any remaining hair, causing it to break.
Selenium: Monica, selenium deficiency is rare. When it occurs, it may disrupt thyroid functioning,which can cause hypothyroidism and hair loss.
Hi Doc! Thank you so much for replying to my comment and replying so thoroughly at that. This is very generous of you. Actually I did get to talk to my doctors regarding my bald spot and praise God that it went away after about 2 months. I guess it was really the stress of the year. I had a repeat breast ultrasound last June 2021 then again last December 2021. In December though, they had a repeat mammo too. Praise God so far my doctors said there is no cause for concern. The way I understand it is that they are still monitoring the several cysts they found in both my breasts. I am scheduled again for a follow-up checkup come June of this year. So right now, I am choosing to stay positive and just going on with my daily tasks. I do have to admit though that at times I wish that I do not have to go back to do medical procedures but I guess that’s life. Thank you again so much doctor for taking the time to read and answer my comment. You have blessed the world with your generosity. I pray for more success in your life! 🥰

I really need your advice. I am in a BI-RADS 3 and I have a mass on the right side, a cyst on the left side and my left arm lymph node is bigger that 3 cm. I also have a family history ( 3 Aunts had breast cancer on my mom's side) around the same age like me. I will see a breast surgeon next week and scared to find out that I have cancer. What do you think Dr.?!
I know this is a scary situation. I’m proud of you fir having the courage to go see a breast surgeon. You didn’t allow the fear to paralyze you. You definitely need a MGM, breast ultrasound and a left lymph node biopsy under your axillae (arm)
What was your final diagnosis?
Doctor I’m 44, no cancer history in my family. Did fist mammogram with Birads 3 and will have soon a control after half year. No cancer history should I do biopsy?

@@dr.aprilspencer2444 hi doctor, the first mammogram was in July 2021. Results say…. “Dense mammary gland tissue can be seen on both sides, with a few tiny, calcified lipoid necrosis. Densification can be seen on the left on the CC image, with no correlate on the MLO image; sonographically, a subseptated, measuring almost 7 mm, cystic formation is shown at 10 o'clock in a distance of 2 cm from the nipple. Another 5 mm cyst presents on the left periareolar at 2 o'clock. A 10 x 6 mm fibroadenoma is visible in the axillary extension on the right, without malignancy criteria in the elastrography. A sonographic control of the fibroadenoma on the right and the complicated cyst on the left in 3 - 6 months is recommended (of course, earlier if necessary). BI-RADS Classification: Category 3 The patient was informed of the result of the examination and the need for a check-up in 3-6 months. ACR: 4 Birads-Sono: 3
@@catta_h the speared cyst at 10 o’clock and the simple chest at 2 o’clock can continue to be observed for 6 months, if that what you’re comfortable with. The right “fibroadenoma” in your right axillary region should be biopsied in 3-6 months

My Mum just recently did her test and the result reads thus:
Both breasts are symmetrical.
There is focal density Asymmetry in favour of the right breast.
Increase density is seen on the upper outer breast with associated thickening of the trabecula.
No facial masses seen.
No calcifications (micro or macro) seen. Small axillary nodes are seen in the right axilla.
The left breast is normal.
Mild skin thickening is also seen on the right.
IMP: Density Asymmetry of the right breast (BIRADS 3).
There's no cancer related disease in the family, but I'm a bit scared letting her wait for six months before checking since it's a BIRADS 3 (which means it's probably Benign) I really would have to proceed for a biopsy, Please Doctor April what are your Thoughts?
Between she's very stable and healthy!

My apologies that my original reply was not received. However it’s been six months now and I’d like to follow up with how your mom‘s mammogram looks currently . If she has not gotten her mammogram make sure she gets her right diagnostic mammogram to reevaluate the asymmetry in the upper outer quadrant of her breast. Asymmetry can be concerning for breast cancer or other lesions in the breast. It may be helpful during this mammogram for her to have a right breast ultrasound in the upper outer quadrant to assess if there are any masses within the breast that the mammogram may not have seen as well. If on ultrasound the mass is not seen she may consider a breast MRI. The most important thing is to make sure she follows up with new imaging. Remember early detection means better protection!

Hi! I just had my 3rd, 6 month routine ultra sound because I have 4 lumps. I’m birads 3 and they said since the lumps haven’t changed that it’s probably benign and wait until a year for my last ultra sounds to complete the 2 years check. I’m 37 and my aunt has breast cancer currently and she’s in her late 40’s. Should I get a 2nd opinion or am I good to wait for a year?😅
Although most lumps that are stable in size and women your age may be benign however with your family history of premenopausal breast cancer in your aunt it would be wise to just get a 2nd opinion regarding requesting a biopsy now versus waiting six months. A one year follow up is not an option considering your Clinical findings on your breast imaging and your family history. Thank you for your question and I hope my answer is helpful. This is what my mammogram and breast ultrasound results are:
IMPRESSION: ULTRASOUND SUSPICIOUS OF MALIGNANCY No suspicious sonographic or mammographic abnormalities are seen to correspond with the patient's right-sided breast pain. Clinical follow-up and management is recommended. Interval increase in size of slightly irregular focally dilated duct in the right breast at 3:00. Findings are suspicious for a small intraductal mass at this location given change in size and new internal vascular flow by Doppler. Ultrasound-guided biopsy is recommended for further evaluation. Notification was made to the clinician's office and the results were reviewed with the patient. OVERALL STUDY BIRADS: 4 Suspicious of malignancy

Oh, and my mom found the lump. Then they did a mammogram and told her everything was fine. My mom said, "But what about the lump on my chest?" So the doctor did a manual exam and found the lump. It was too high for the mammogram to catch anyway.
Make sure you ask for an ultrasound of the breast for your mom. If the lump is still not seeing via Ultrasound it is not unreasonable to request a breast MRI with and without contrast

Six months ago I had birads 3 on diagnostic mammogram they also performed an ultrasound, they told me to come back in 6 months and I did … today I received the letter from the breast clinical saying I’m birads 3 again 😒 … what should I do ?! Thank you.
You should see a 2nd opinion. Find a breast surgeon that will do your biopsy or a PCP/Gyn that will order a breast biopsy from the radiologist

I want to know, when you give us the numbers of women who die of breast cancer, is this women who die of breast cancer only, or does this iclude women who die of the treatment of the breast cancer such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Because my mother died from radiation therapy. Nobody told us you can die from radiation therapy. My cousin was absolutely flabbergasted when I told him this. "But wait, isn't radiation therapy supposed to cure cancer, not cause cancer?" I thought it was supposed to cure cancer, but it caused another kind of cancer. So tell me. Are women dying from breast cancer? Or are they dying from the treatment?Because I keep hearing that screening mammograms are causing a lot of over treatment. If so, why are women not being told that they can die from the treatment. Women are assuming that they will be treated and live, not that they will be treated and they may die or have health problems the rest of their lives.
Great question. The mortality or death rate numbers are a reflection of women dying from breast cancer specifically. You are absolutely right that there are risks and complications that can make the treatment process very challenging including death however the benefit of the treatment should be assessed for each and every patient. If the benefit outweighs the risk then the treatment certainly will be helpful. However there needs to be a very deliberate conversation about any treatment that may be more harmful to each patient. Typically the medical oncologist and the radiation oncologist would do a risk - benefit analysis to see what direction of management for the cancer is safest for the individual patient to give maximum efficacy with minimalization of toxicity.
I hate this bi rads 3 category. Leaves the patient (me) anxious for 6 months. My mom was diagnosed with two different breast cancers in both breasts. Metastatic. It has spread to lymph nodes and in lungs. Also had an aunt on mom's side die at age of 42 with breast cancer. My gail score is 23% yet they want me to wait 6 months 🤦♀️. There is asymmetry in right breast along with a small mass at 12:00 position. They usually do biopsies on me when they find something. (Been years since I've had to have anything biopsied) Don't like being in this bi rads 3 category. Basically it means they are just guessing if you ask me.....
