Is Goku a bad father? No, he could’ve been better in raising his children, but he literally died for his children and has spent time with children when available. He wasn’t there for most of Gohan’s life because he was either dead or fighting for his life trying to save the universe.
The whole concept of being a better father is cringe since in these shonens father hood and being a son is a different ideology in these stories because it’s fiction. We can’t say he could be a better dad if we’re currently not fathers ourselves. It’s fiction and it’s not that big of a deal. Gokus father and son relationship is a narrative decision for a story of Saiyan warriors. This whole discussion of goku of being a good dad is annoying because at the end of the day gohan is proud of his dad and goku is proud of his son.
As for the bean toss, consider the following. Vegeta, tried to destroy Earth in desperation. Frieza, succeeded in destroying namek in desperation. Cell, has both their DNA.
One of the main things people choose to ignore is why Goku decided to stay dead for 7 years. Goku knew he attracts all the villans that came to earth and he was 100% right. Saiyans arrival, Frieza and the whole cell saga existed because he didn't finish the job. Buu was a coincidence but MAJIN VEGETA was not
Because people watch the anime where it had the filler otherworld tournament and didn't read the fucking manga, the true source material, where goku wanted to stay dead because Bulma told him he attracted all the villains. Goku is both selfish and selfless honestly, but his selfishness makes him much better than Naruto as a shonen protagonist and on the level of luffy.
@@lapplandkun9273this shows you didn’t watch the anime or read the manga. Goku couldn’t come back because the dragon balls couldn’t bring someone who died already once. Goku was using that reason as to comfort his friends not as a reason to not be resurrected.
The senzu bean toss is crazy, but that's just how much Goku believed in Gohan. Gohan didn't even care about the bean either, cause he understood the sentiment.
10:41 With Vegeta hitting both Trunks and Goten in that scene, he only did this because neither one of them would listen when Vegeta told them to leave. He knew it was the only way to get the boys to safety
Honestly the funniest thing about giving Cell the senzu bean is that Goku was 100% correct in his decision and no one sees why. First off, Gohan was literally the only person on the planet with the potential to defeat Cell, but he needed to be pushed to SSJ2 first. Get Cell back to full power and his arrogance and pride returns. That arrogance and pride is what causes Cell to practically torture the Z-Fighters and push Gohan to SSJ2 in the first place. Had Goku never given Cell that senzu bean? Surely he would've killed Gohan and the rest in his desperation, wanting to destroy the Earth and move on before he gives the Earthlings too much room to make a comeback like he did in canon. Even if you assume Gohan in SSJ alone would've killed Cell, this would mean that SSJ2 (And SSJ3 by proxy) never comes to fruition, which means everyone dies in the Buu Saga. So no, Goku didn't fuck up by giving Cell the senzu bean. What he did was give Cell just the ego boost he needed to push Gohan to SSJ2 in the first place.
Goku absolutely fucked up. Cell has Gohan in a bear hug. Gohan was literally dying . Android 16 rescued Gohan. if Gohan has broke free on his own , then I would agree with you . But Gohan required rescuing. Even then ,Gohan couldn't reach super Sayain two on its own. If Android 16 hadn't been there, then Gohan would have died.
@@MasterofVirology That is where the piccolo speech comes in which cause goku to fight cell as he saw that his plan to push gohan didn't work because the desperation didn't work as it would have for goku. Android 16 realized what push gohan needed and became the push goku wanted to give to gohan.
I don’t think Goku is a bad dad, I think ppl r just provided better examples of healthy fatherhood later on in the series and blow Goku’s admitted faults out of proportion. Best dad title is a tie between adult gohan and krillin. Both love their kids unconditionally, both provide for their family financially and in stability, both fight threats to the planet (and thus their family). Everyone knows Goku’s faults as a father cus they’ve been memed to death
Goku isn’t a bad dad, he’s just careless but supportive of his son’s decisions. ChiChi isn’t bad either, she’s one of those ‘tiger moms’ that just wants Gohan to have a good future.
I would consider Piccolo as a horrible teacher to Gohan but yet everyone praises him and calls him Gohan actually father is all the way outrageous for anyone to think of 😂.
@@PrimeShiemPiccolo was still evil. Since he became fully good , he's been a much better father to Gohan than Goku. In super Goku was bewildered why Vegeta when Bulma gave birth. He literally said it's not like you're pregnant .
@wingeddragonra3953 firstly, he wasn't. In Z, before Goku died in the Cell saga, Goku was just as present as he was (even more if you count the time he spent with Gohan before Raditz showed up), and we don't know what Piccolo was up to for the 7 years Goku was dead. DBS also likes to retroactively dumb down Gokus character, to a point that the only consistent thing about him is his design. Seeing as he was literally with Chi Chi and OX King for a good few years, I find it stupid that Super tries so hard to make him this ignorant and emotionally inept. I'll give Piccolo this, he's likely been a better figure in Pan's life than Goku, but not a better father to Gohan.
Dude ever since I saw Dragon Ball I never saw Goku as a bad Father bell he’s far from that he’s not perfect but who is?? Goku is one of the best Fathers Gohan and Goten has ever had SO THANK YOUU FOR BEING THE SAIN PEOPLE WHO KNOWS THE TRITH INSTEAD THE WHOLE FOURSTAR PARODY BULLSHIT THAT I THINK PEOPLE THOUGHT ITS THE REASON THEY THINK GOKU IS THE WORST
Goku is not the literal best father ever but he's a pretty damn good one. He genuinely cares for his sons, spending a lot of time with Gohan and as much time as he can with Goten (for the literal day he was allowed back). He dies twice for Gohan (somehow thats abandoning his family????) like he chooses to stay dead because he believes being alive will continue to cause problems and suffering for his home and people. That's so upsetting. Also Goku is so supportive of both Gohan and Goten and always tries to boost them up to show his support. Not that Vegeta or Piccolo are bad or anything but I find it glaringly obvious that people have only either watched TFS or Super and that's why they think those two are "better father figures." Vegeta - who didn't care if his infant son died, didn't hold him for the first 8 years of his life, who only does the one good act before offing himself. And Piccolo - who tried to off Goku multiple times, kidnapped Gohan, screamed at and berated him, checked a four year old at a mountain, abandoned him in the wilderness... Like I love these characters but it's like everyone forgets all that other stuff...You know who is a great dad, no questions asked? Krillin.
Piccolo and Gohan are more brothers than father/son. Piccolo is just 4yrs older than Gohan, and Piccolo was big brothering Gohan the whole time in the wilderness instead of being a father to him. Piccolo has never been a father to Gohan at the first place so why the fuck people think that way lmao.
Its mostly cause the abridged, and people take the abridged version too seriously. People be internalizing the abridged characters as actual ones. edit: also just realised, bro got 1.5 k subs lol, this is some 500k sub video quality ngl like the editing and comedy i know this channel gonna blow up lol
It's ridiculous. TFS fanboys are saying it's their true dub when TFS went out of their way to say its a parody and people should support the original show/manga by toriyama. Those people should stop.
So there's this small channel, TeamFourStar, maybe you've heard of them. They've got a modest following of about... 4 million people, no big deal. And they have this niche series called Dragon Ball Z Abridged where they essentially make Goku the Homer Simpson of anime, which is to say, a dumbass bad father who couldn't care less about his son. Now, the Goku bad father debate could have started well before the series ever hit the internet, but it certainly fanned the flames. A lot of people have not truly watched Z. I'm one of them. There simply isn't a good reliable streaming service for it. So a lot of people may very well be getting their information from Abridged, which is, and I cannot stress this enough, a *PARODY.* I love TFS's work. It's great, funny, entertaining. But I know that some people struggle to make the distinction of what is parody and what is canon. And we cannot ignore that they play an integral role in this argument anymore.
8:53 Goten and Goku's moment is canon. Toriyama has gone out of his way to say that the anime and manga are canon to each other. Specifically now it's Kai that is canon to the original manga.
@@PrimeShiem Yup! And to add onto it, since Super is a direct continuation of Kai, and the fact that Toriyama has worked personally on the anime continuity of Super and said the Super manga is different, the anime version of Super is actually the canon version while the Super manga by Toyotaro is it's own continuity.
@PrimeShiem kind of hard to cut it out. It's still a canon scene from the Manga just added a few scenes on it. Cutting for the sake of manga canon would have made it choppy. There were other situations with Kai where cutting filler would fuck with the Manga canon too.
After thinking of certain moments of the anime and the fact that Piccolo mentions the fact he never got his license, a reference to the best filler, yeah, I guess you're right.
The only shitty thing Goku did is that when he decided to stay dead he didn't once try to call and talk with the family wher he would find out another son was born. Communication through king Kai was simple. It was Goku's choice to never talk with his wife and son(a) for all those years.
THANK YOU!!! people keep slandering my boy for no reason with some scenes that shows he was an ok Dad. Not to mention team four star kinda did this to him.
Even with Goku giving a Senzu Bean one- he did that so Cell got overly confident and just didn't take out Gohan right away due to his weakened state. This allowed for his plan to potentially work, knowing Cell could likely make Gohan tap into his hidden potential.
To this day, I still find it nonsensical that people hyperfocus so much on the main character's parenting skills in a "battle shonen," where none of that is even relevant. While Goku isn't winning any father of the year rewards, who actually cares? We're in a story where the emphasis is clearly on the values of strength, self-improvement, and defending the planet from aliens. The fact that something so simple as Goku being either dead or incapacitated for massive chunks of the story getting glossed over is wild. Not to mention how the dude was genuinely remorseful during his actual screw up (the senzu) and atoned for it. That's also part of the self-improvement theme, despite parenting not even being a focus. ...That's not to mention how this dude literally couldn't rest in peace after his 2nd death because his successors couldn't step up to the mantle (which is moreso an issue with the writing of the Buu arc than Goku himself). Ever since TFS (which I love btw), this only got more and more annoying over the years. When a literal recurring joke in a parody somehow validates a pre-existing flawed argument for people, that's when I knew it was time to give up on arguing with the "Goku bad dad" crowd. It's a waste of energy.
Y'know, I genuinely think I couldn't have put that any better than you did. I never even stopped to think of the lack of significance Gokus parenting has on the story ever since it's been brought up. I also love TFS, and while the joke is great there, when people started to push it onto actual DBZ, it started to get annoying.
Ok, its actually big brained to give Cell a Sensu bean, if Cell was like 1 hp, he would kill Gohan. Because if hes confidant, he will go easy, take his time with his literal food like an animal. So the sensu bean would give confidence, and is controversial, but in a way its nice because Goku sees how powerful his son.
Gonna keep it a stack, you have this TH-camr shit down to a T despite having this (relatively) few subs and views (especially on this video specifically). Please make more content like this
AInt it ironic that people want to talk about Goku letting Cell fight with the Senzu bean yet forget that Goku prevented him from fighting Cell when he knew he would die
Goku is an extremely better father than his own father Bardock only because Bardock was a pure blooded saiyan raised on vegeta and didn't really care about Goku because of his "pathetic" power level only till then did he receive the power to see the future that he realized his son was going to be more than just some low class warrior but one of the most powerful Saiyan's in the universe it changed bardock at the end of his life when he challenged frieza now skip ahead some decades and we have Goku raising his son gohan the way his grandfather did with love and care and fuck Goku is willing to die for his son if it means he'll be safe that honestly makes Goku an incredible dad in my book
To defend Vegeta karate chopping Trunks, it was to prevent him from fighting Buu. Remember, Vegeta was going to blow up and the last thing he says to Trunks is "take care of your mother for me." Goten getting punched in the stomach on the other hand was personal.
The senzu bean was a desperate move. Goku learnt that humanity would die without him. Goku needed a successor. Remember, Cell has saiyan cells😂. When Gohan beats Cell after a zenkai boost, Goku knows he can die happy knowing his son, wife, friends, and home will be safe. Unfortunately, Gohan almost dies in the process, and Buu debunked Goku's theory.
I just find it dumb that the anime community expects a guy with no education what’s so ever to be the best father in the world it’s crazy vegeta actually had a dad who cared for him Goku only had grandpa gohan for a few years
Its crazy how alot of people say that Goku is a bad dad but those are the same ones who didn't even WATCH Dragon Ball. Goku literally agreed with Chi-Chi that he should do his studies instead of going fishing with him and Krillin and they all were shocked. If that isn't an example, I dont know what is.
To justify Vegeta only once cuz that’s all he can get: Vegeta loved his son enough to knock him out and have him taken away when he was gonna kill himself. because he didn’t want Trunks trying to stop him or see it happen. That is all for Vegeta wise being a parent.
Hey man, I want you to know that I literally do not care about dragonball. But you made this video entertaining to a MegaMan and Transformers nerd. So good job!

That was just a fact to him it was basically like playing a game going all in with a pair of tricked dice. There was nothing the other player could do to come out on top. At least, he thought so, but he realised his error and made up for it and tried to fix it like a good Dad

You can argue that in Super when Zamasu and Goku Black said that after he switched bodies with him he killed Chi Chi and Goten after killing him and look at how pissed Goku got just from hearing that. Imagine what would have happened if he saw it happen in front of him. The sheer amount of anger that would explode would probably scare Beerus to his bones.

Thank you! Also, I did plan on talking about that, with how they hugged in the manga, but it was just a quick embrace in the anime, as I found it weird.
I think Goku has his facepalm moments, but overall he's a great father. I used to be on the 'Goku is a bad father' train simply because of MY father. He loved DBZ as a teen, getting himself the nickname Goku from his close friends. He associates very heavily with Goku and sees himself in him. My father is also an abusive piece of s..t who punches holes in walls and screams at his kids and wife. I s..t you not, my dad uses a super loud kiai whenever he is angry at us and wants us to shut up. When I was a teen I thought that Goku must be a bad father, since my bad father identifies so heavily with the character. I used to say that Goku was a bad father just to get under his skin. I also looked from the childrens' perspective more when I was younger, imprinting my inherent fear of conflict and violence onto Gohan and Goten, especially since Gohan starts off very timid and weak overall. But now that I'm a proper adult finally, I can see Goku as the character is intended. Flawed, certainly, but kind and caring and good. A fictional father that serves as an excellent role model, assuming life-threatening stakes are the usual in your day-to-day lol. Currently in the process of reclaiming DBZ for myself, sans-association with my father, by watching it with a friend who's never seen it. It makes me very happy. Excellent video!
Anything that goku is a bad dad people say can literally be countered by “he was fucking dead” or “goku is just stupid” And the cell bean thing? He just was so proud of his son he thought he could beat him again.
It's bad no matter how you defend it, but the only way to explain the senzu bean thing is Goku had too much faith in his son to get the job done, parents realistically good parents have these big expectations for their kids they have faith in them, just Goku's faith in Gohan was misplaced. It's not wrong, but Goku could've trusted Gohan's agency to tell him of the plan even though Gohan immediately knew.
Yeah, that's why I ain't even bother to defend the Senzu Bean. I understood that Gohan was the only one who could best cell, but the Senzu Bean was extra
Gold being bad dad is like a meme that got out of control and now people think it’s actually true :D Great video by the way man, subscribed instantly. Really solid work!
Vegeta nearly lets wife and son die to andriod 20. Doesn't hug son for 7 years since his birth. Risks life of his family and becomes majin to fight Goku. Such a good dad.
Also people are forgetting that Goku is not human. it's like Shrek in the case where he is new to being a parent and their nature of who they are come into conflict with that. hell, kid Vegeta did not even care about his dad's approval as far as I'm concerned. and king Vegeta did not care about he own son, only his power level. and you could argue if planet Vegeta was never blown up then. prince Vegeta being a powerful king would be important. with the only real hypothetical threat being a teen or adult Broly.

Goku may not be the best father but he's not a bad father. He may have made mistakes but that's what father do as well as us. They make mistakes and try to make up for them. We can't forget that even before raditz arrived, Goku was there in Gohan's childhood. Hell, in fhe Bojack movie, Goku literally reject the resistrions of death to save Gohan from Bojack. (I know z movies aren't canon but I want to point those out there.)
Wild how everyone casually walks over the fact goku willingly didn't see his 5 year old son for a year just to train on yardrat when he could have at least gone to Earth first and then brought gohan back with him so thag they could traun together. He had options but he chose literal child abandonment for like a year lmao
His intentions were trying to control the super saiyan transformation’s power and the rage that comes with it so he wouldn’t accidentally lose it and hurt his friends and family. Him staying away for a year must’ve meant the training to master himself in his supersaiyan state must have been extremely challenging for him.

no that was in character goku’s knows what will happen because he was in gohans situation when king piccolo killed krillin and goku was on the verge of death after that fight so he knew he had to stop gohan so he wouldn’t make the same mistake as him
Understatement. Look at popo canon vs. Popo abridged. Completely different ppl.
mr popo is one of them
also can people stop being cunts to the name Karen?
Yeah, Goku's a better dad then people want to admit. Super, he's not that bad either. He says he's proud of Gohan on his strength and that he's happy for him having a child. He keeps Goten and Trunks from the tournament of power. So the people who say he's a bad father are liars.
fr i mean i get he died and wasn’t around when gohan and goten needed him but he had to do it to save the earth
That, or people have only seen DBZA and think it's a accurate.
It’s worse than that, they’ve deluded themselves into believing the lie as truth
Not true. He suggested the kids join but Vegeta declined it in Manga
True, but the Manga and Anime are different cannons
Is Goku a bad father? No, he could’ve been better in raising his children, but he literally died for his children and has spent time with children when available. He wasn’t there for most of Gohan’s life because he was either dead or fighting for his life trying to save the universe.
Right, I don't think he's the perfect dad, but I think he did a good job.
That is true.

One of the main things people choose to ignore is why Goku decided to stay dead for 7 years. Goku knew he attracts all the villans that came to earth and he was 100% right. Saiyans arrival, Frieza and the whole cell saga existed because he didn't finish the job. Buu was a coincidence but MAJIN VEGETA was not
That's true, literally the whole Buu Saga could've been avoided.

Yeah, I definitely overlooked that on purpose, so thats my bad.
yeah but come on, that gut check on goten was personal
The senzu bean did nothing for cell cuz he still got folded by gohan just proves goku was right to have faith in gohan
Honestly, when you put it like that, you right.
All I can say is that Goku is a good father to both Gohan and Goten, caring about both of them, and even dying for his oldest son twice.

Krillin.
Piccolo and Gohan’s relationship can be summed up as Stockholm/Lima syndrome
That's what I'm saying.

Goku is a W father, I wish more people realized that
So there's this small channel, TeamFourStar, maybe you've heard of them.
So a lot of people may very well be getting their information from Abridged, which is, and I cannot stress this enough, a *PARODY.*
I love TFS's work.
Ah, so if the scene is shown in Kai, it's cannon, ok.
So the kiss scene after Goku wakes up from the heart virus is canon.
People legit just watched dbz abridged and said "yeah that's canon goku now" because there's no way the slander would be as bad as it is without it.
True, wouldn't be half as bad.

Not to forget….PICCOLO KIDNAPPED GOHAN LIKE ON GOD
Flirting: Piccolo dropping Gohan into the wilderness to survive
Harrassment: Goku giving Cell a Senzu Bean
Ok, its actually big brained to give Cell a Sensu bean, if Cell was like 1 hp, he would kill Gohan. Because if hes confidant, he will go easy, take his time with his literal food like an animal. So the sensu bean would give confidence, and is controversial, but in a way its nice because Goku sees how powerful his son.

preaaach i roll my eyes whenever someone says vegeta is a better dad than goku
The prince of all saiyans? More like The prince of all foreheads and widows peaks.
Goku is an extremely better father than his own father Bardock only because Bardock was a pure blooded saiyan raised on vegeta and didn't really care about Goku because of his "pathetic" power level only till then did he receive the power to see the future that he realized his son was going to be more than just some low class warrior but one of the most powerful Saiyan's in the universe it changed bardock at the end of his life when he challenged frieza
now skip ahead some decades and we have Goku raising his son gohan the way his grandfather did with love and care and fuck Goku is willing to die for his son if it means he'll be safe
that honestly makes Goku an incredible dad in my book
I think abridged did the most damage to his reputation as a dad

Goten getting punched in the stomach on the other hand was personal.

The senzu bean was a desperate move. Goku learnt that humanity would die without him. Goku needed a successor. Remember, Cell has saiyan cells😂.

(I know z movies aren't canon but I want to point those out there.)
The amount of Vegeta meatriders is insane 💀💀💀
Nah it really is💀 like ain't no way.
Your acting like you guys dont Beatrice goku
You act like you guys dont meatride goku either
Wild how everyone casually walks over the fact goku willingly didn't see his 5 year old son for a year just to train on yardrat when he could have at least gone to Earth first and then brought gohan back with him so thag they could traun together. He had options but he chose literal child abandonment for like a year lmao
That's true, he did just stay on Yardrat, he likely had good intentions, but like some other things in the video, I ain't tryna make him look perfect.
His intentions were trying to control the super saiyan transformation’s power and the rage that comes with it so he wouldn’t accidentally lose it and hurt his friends and family. Him staying away for a year must’ve meant the training to master himself in his supersaiyan state must have been extremely challenging for him.
To be fair, him staying on yardrat and learning instant transmission has been consistently proven to be one of the smartest moves he ever made lol.
Now that I think of it, if I got so angry, I became a threat to my own son, when he did nothing wrong, I'd take some time to sort out my form as well.
So we're pretending like his ship didn't need to be repaired before he could leave? You're reaching, my guy.
For the last time Goku gave Cell the senzu bean to show Cell that even at 100% when Gohan gets serious Cell at his best doesn't stand a chance
If you're saying "for the last time," I'm assuming you mean this will be the last time I get this comment since this is your first comment on my channel. Sadly, this ain't gonna be the last one.
If goku never gave cell the senzu cell would have killed off gohan instead of being extremely overconfident toying with him until he did turn ssj2 so it’s completely defendable
