Hate to spoil the party but people will take your advise and start washing cars out there on their drive ways. While its good for the paint on their cars, the soaps and chemicals are washed down the roads into our water bodies. Just a small amount of soap is very difficult to remove when purifying water. Water collected from designated car wash areas is considered contaminated and treated, run off on city streets is not. We are already facing a water crisis, I wouldn't be encouraging people to wash cars out there on the streets. Please do some research on that. I like your videos, just pointing out a troubling observation that I see everyday.

Scotty i used to watch your videos for years dude and i finally opened and own my own shop at the age of 21. Im a year in now, Just turned 21 this month. Honestly if it wasnt for you Scotty, Eric the car guy, the mechanic Oc and a few other guys.. i dont think my love would be as strong as it is for cars as it is today. Im loving it, and all the new experiences im observing day to day. Although i tend to be impatient with my employees i try to focus really hard on the bigger picture. EXACTLY! We have no choice. Unless you want your car to turn into a pile of rust. Now the car wash I go to is owned by a man who is normally there 4-5 days a week. He also has those hand wash stalls. He keeps the place up very well...best brushless car wash in town in my opinion. Oh yea. I always hand dry my car. Door jambs included! This is very important in the winter. 'cause if ya' don't dry those door jambs the car may freeze shut.
Hey... I put WD040 in my car locks and on the gaskets on the door jambs about twice a year. My Camry is 15 years old, runs like a top and has almost zero corrosion.
Even though people here in Iowa know how to take care of the ice situation with their autos it is amazing to see that folks still get frozen out of their cars.
+Gerry Hamm I used ballistol often on my seals, hinges, gaskets, locks. Its non toxic & cfc free. ballistol has a light pine scent. no harsh fumes.

I repair car wash equipment. Most of what he said in this video is false. I repair them then wash my work van through “ test washes” I wash the van 1000 times per year. I suggest you make sure to take off your wire whip antenna if you have one and make sure your license plates have all 4 screws securing them.
Auto wash is fine. The brushes are made of closed foam meaning no holes that can hold dirt or sand like a sponge. The brushes are under constant flushing of soapy water and centrifugal force cleans them constantly every wash. The acid based products are used on touch less washers. A good touch less facility will soak first with acid base chemical then second pass with alkaline base chemical . And no matter which wash type you chose brush or touch less they both use RO water to rinse. That means reverse osmosis purified water is used for final rinsing. That is the “ spot free rinse” they advertised. If you are getting spotting go back and get your money back The RO may not be working and you might be rinsing with tap water if the equipment isn’t properly maintained. Choose a facility that has a “ wipe down” area where you wipe the car yourself. And my last piece of advise. If you go through auto washes regularly, you should give your pride and joy a good hand wax every two or three months because the wax dispensing unit at the car wash will only keep your car shiny until the first or second rain. A hand wax is much better and protects your car especially if it’s black. Washing a black car over and over in an auto wash without a hand wax now and then could develop very fine micro scratches. If you don’t like hand waxing, try an auto detailer service.
Doing it yourself, you might notice new dents, washing rims, check you brakes and rotors, tire pressure, visual inspection

Good points! Yes, it's killing two birds with one stone. You're getting a better clean AND doing a visual inspection at the same time. Which people should be doing anyway.
But I don't want to notice the new dents. That said I don't use car washes until my car is old enough that it doesn't matter that much anyway. No way in hell I'd use one with a brand new car. That would be painful to watch.
The funny thing with hand washing your car is that people will also forget that they also need to wash the rags, towels, sponges, etc. that they need to use for the car when washing it. If not, hello swirl city
I’m watching this after using a car wash, it left multiple scratches on my car and a few large scratches
I think it depends on which carwash you go to. I used to work at a carwash that had annoyingly high standards (got a written warning for simply not promoting a seasonal sale on a busy day) but we used soft cloth type spinners instead of the scratchy bristle brush type. And our heat drying vents were so powerful that cars were 99 percent dry when they got out. One major thing we needed to watch out for was if any cars had rust before going in the wash. If a car with rust went into the wash, the rust would come off and get stuck on those cloth spinners and would indeed scratch other cars.
The place I go to is similar to that. Soft everything, and completely dry. It's expensive, but it's perfect for the lazy.

From a purist point of view, you're right. If I lived in Texas, I'd never take my vehicle to a car wash either; but I live in the Northeastern part of the country and in the winter after you've accumulated a ton of salt under your car and it's 20 degrees out, you'd be taking yours to a car wash, too.
Nope. I live in mass. I NEVER bring my car to the automated car wash. Ever. If it's 40°f or above I break out the rubber gloves and the hose and go to town. Preserves my paint far longer by getting the salt off.
I drive a 22 year old saturn sc2 manual and i've never washed it in the three years i've owned it.

live in Wisconsin lots of salt I go to a do it yourself wash and just use high pressure water to get the salt off
I agree with all of the comments from people who live in snow and salt country. You don’t have a choice when it’s 15 degrees outside and you have to get all that caked on road salt off.
You do have a better alternative. Rinseless or waterless car wash. You can do it right in your garage.

@@joeturtleneck2300 the point is that using an automatic car wash is not the end of the world. Just look for a Touchless or touch free car wash instead of one that uses brushes. Sure, maybe it won't clean quite as good as decent hand wash, but it gets the road salt off your car, which is the main concern anyways.
Nobody was just whining because we're "forced" to use these things. We were simply pointing out it's not as bad as it's made out to be; and definitely better than doing nothing.

I haven't seen too many autocar wash with those giant spinning brush, but pressure water washer.
I use the automated wash in the winter. Hand dry and spray wax in my garage. Hand washing only in the summer.
I'm handicapped and unable to hand wash. I'm thankful for automatic soft touch and or power washing for my car. There's always an exception for every rule. But nonetheless I think your 98.7% spot on.
I went to a carwash a while back and the guy that was about to wipe down my car dropped the rag, picked it up and just shook the little rocks off. As he proceeded to use it on the car, we made eye contact and he realized I saw what happen. He threw the rag into a bucket, then went inside to get a new one. Always keep a close eye on them because they WILL do a half ass job if you don't.
I would be afraid to let my car get washed by the group of kids doing a fundraiser on a Saturday morning. So afraid of how careless they would be.

I used to wash my car when it was raining. Bucket of soapy water and a rag. Let the rain rinse it off. The Jiffy Wash with wax in it. The rain just beaded up.
First and only time I went to a car wash my car got scratched up in just that way. Never again.

I used to love going through automatic car washes with my mom. Her Tahoe still looks fine and shiny, but I frankly want my shiny Mustang to be as shiny Mustangy as I can.
Scotty speaks the dang truth here. Worked a summer at an automated car wash (the guy pointing left and right to get you on the conveyor), and the wash definitely tore up people's cars over the course of a few months. We sold a subscription where you could come in daily for $12/month, and some guys would drive in with their new luxury cars almost every day. I could definitely notice degradation even over a few months. That whole summer, I don't think we washed the brushes a single time. Also, good luck keeping your antenna, mirrors, or wipers attached to your car - the machine would whack one or two off people's cars daily. The whole premises was coated in cameras to cover us on liability. Furthermore, we had a lot of dealership business and repair guys would drive through with the car you dropped off for maintenance to make a good impression on pickup - so if you're concerned, tell em not wash it.
I love the liability disclaimer board that is a mile long...that was enough to send me packing.

2 year old civic till looking brand new. Never take to car washes unless they are brushless, no one washes by hand, no brooms, no rotating machines. Only use car washes that spray the foam and rinse if it's winter and I don't feel like washing myself using Scotty's method. However its impossible to fight oxidation of paint over time like the sun, acid rain, etc. but we can slow down paint looking like crap over time.

Most contemporary car washes no longer use bristle brushes, they use soft cloths and soapy solutions...
Yes, I wash mine in one of those soft cloths, but still wonder if that scratches a bit and makes swirls
Still horrible for your paint. Those soft cloths still hold all the dirt from the cars before you. May as well wash your car with sandpaper.
Jose O They still do. A friend of mine took their black BMW through the same car wash and the clear coat looks terrible. The poor car needs a compound and polish bad.
The only okay ones are the touchless ones, but eventually you'll have to wash it yourself anyways because it can't get everything off.
Touchless ones aren't flawless either. Sure they don't use bristle brushes but they do use high pressure water streams and considering a lot of them are close to the car when running, better hope that the water doesn't take off any paint.
this is a serious case of oldschoolidous. we live in a snowy winter salty roads state and you betr wash your car thru an auto wash (without brushes) bc they get all that salty grimy mess off the underside that you can basically never get yourself. everything in moderation, now get back to work and beam me up scotty
Without brushes is fine. Just remember, if you have a coating on your car, which you should have at all times, most car washes will utilize a soap that is NOT PH neutral which means it will strip away a portion of your protection. Best option is to get a ceramic coating applied. Cleaning is nothing more than just spraying the car down at your local car wash. No soap or scrubbing needed.

@Joseph Bailey; Read carefully, he said snowy winter. When its below zero spray guns are useless as the water just freezes on the car.. Touchless washes are fine and sometimes the only method available; i.e you live in a condo. Trick is to dry the car immediately after the carwash with proper towels (I use micro fibre cloths) and then apply a spray wax such as Turtle Wax Ice.

I unfortunately already put mine through an automatic wash earlier just hours before watching this video. The wash put lots of small scratches everywhere throughout the paint on my vehicle. I really wish I had watched this first
Says the Texan. Up north, salt is a killer for cars so it is a constant battle to wash off the salt during the winter. "Pick a nice and sunny day to wash", yea ok. I'd rather roll through a car wash than drag out the hose in the snow and dealing with cold water spray in freezing temperatures.
I saw some post stating that people are washing their autos in extremely low temperatures. Honestly as a long time resident of the state of Iowa which is a frozen tundra in the winter. I really find this hard to believe. I've never seen anyone wash their car by hand in extreme cold weather.
Is there no self service pressure washer car washes where you live? I juse that when i dont want to do it at home if its cold. But not if its freezing and you will leave car outside.

Hey scotty, first off love the video, secondly I used to work at a car wash as a hand dryer, and fun fact for you, the way we cleaned the rags was by putting them in a "washing machine", which was a sink that you filled with water and it automatically moved the water, then the water would drain and you would put the rags into a dryer. So even if those rags were "just cleaned" in reality they were still dirty

EA Jam i learned the hard way.. i knew these car washes messes up your car but i was desperate so i took my brand new 2018 honda accord through one and viola!!!!! They scratched up my plastic trim left water spots on it and left a huge scratch accross the hood little scratches on the grill........ Yup never again.

Its awesome that Scotty addressed this for people. I've been talking about it for the last 4+ years. We used to have a 1999 Saturn SL2. What I noticed several years into getting my car washed at " EXPRESS WASH " here in California, was that there was "impact " damage. It could always be seen on the places on the car that would take a direct hit from the brushes: eg., edges of doors, trim, side mirrors, etc. Over time, it had literally striped off the clear coat in these areas. Also...( and Scotty almost explained how this happens ) there is a specific way to wash a car with rags or brushes. Top to Bottom. NO EXCEPTIONS. The bottom of the car is where the vast majority of debris, grit, sand and road debris accumulates. So...when you rub the bottom of the car with a rag or brush, and move that rag to the upper parts of the car, you invariably drag that sharp grit up on the finish of your car and wind up scratching the finish. I learned that from an older man I worked for back in the 1980s.And there is some serious crap on the bottom areas of your car so...DON'T DO THAT ! Dry your car the same way you should wash it. That's why you should stay away from those groups of people doing those " CAR WASH FUND RAISERS ", they typically don't know how to wash a car properly, so you wind up donating some money and getting your cars finish messed up in the process. Just donate the money...wash the car yourself.
those brushes are strong enough to fold your mirrors, enough said. they are way too rough.
I partially agree with you, Those Express Exterior Washes are 100% SAFE for cars, they use closed cell foam on the brushes which is very gentle. But Gas Station car washes, are the culprits of damaging your cars, the dirt can get stuck in the overused brushes. Hand washes are very dangerous to use, sure it can be quicker, but the rocks and dirt can get in the towels. If you still don’t trust those types of washes, use those TouchLess LaserWashes.

I worked at a popular carwash in the south for 8 years. One like he described as an automatic wash with guys that dry it off afterward. Everything Scotty says is true. We never cleaned the brushes and it should be bad for your paint. We recycled the water and it is dirty too. But it doesn't really matter for the average person. I washed my Cadillac every Saturday for 8 years at this wash. THE PAINT WAS FINE. I saw managers wash their F150's 3 or 4 times a week for years and THE PAINT WAS FINE. The worse thing you can do is not wash your car. I can almost guarantee you the person that owned his Celica washed it a handful of times a year and never waxed it. That is why the paint looks like crap. It is why my 95 Camry looks like crap. Leaving dirt on your car is far worse than washing your car in less than perfect situations. Everything I know about an automatic carwash tells me it is a bad idea. However, if you wash your car at least once a month AND DRY IT OFF it will be fine. It won't be show quality but it will be better than most cars on the road. I wash my car the way Scotty recommends, but if your lazy or busy, an automatic car wash is far better than not washing it.
All car paint eventually rusts off with time. Its just that with these automatic car washes, your paint is gonna go out even sooner. Those things literally beat the heck out of your car when youre in it.
Oddly enough, I used to detail cars. I already knew every reason you mentioned here. I was just curious what the mechanic thought.

I go through the "touchless" car wash once a week or 2 during thing the winter!! doesn't do a good/great job but I only do it to get most of the salt off.
Exactly!!! What are we supposed to use living up north?? and in freezing weather??? Can't wash it yourself everything (including self) would freeze. Sometimes I'll need to go through a regular one because the salt is caked on!!!!!

@@crashfields14 One of the local ones has no brushes. Just water jets. Seems to do a good job getting stuff off. Blowers are still just blowers, though - they will water spot in the sun.

I work in the car wash industry, and the soft brush car washes do not! I repeat do not! Scratch your car! The brushes never keep dirt and grime in them ever! Constantly wet constantly spinning they are always soft, and the friction used with the brushes actually cleans your car
When I bought my new car I was hand washing it with a soap bucket and rinse bucket and power washer and foamer but since i live in a apartment complex I don't really have access to a water holes, I would barrow my moms driveway when I washed it and my girlfriend was tired of me washing it since it was time consuming, so until I get my own house with my own driveway I'm running it though automatic car washes, by doing that I already knew what would happen, will def polish all the scratches off in future
theyre nice when you have a full size truck or suv that requires a ladder to hand wash tho!
No use paying for a car wash anyways, do it yourself save some money and get outside, spend time with family

Do you have access to a water hose? That makes it easier. I'm living on campus at college, so I don't even have that. What I do for washing/waxing my road bike (collegiate cycling), I went to dollar tree and got the following:
Bucket, car sponge, micro-fiber car wash mitt, very soft micro-fiber towel (feels similar to rabbit fur, extremely soft), dish soap, (and then Turtle wax purchased elsewhere).
Fill up the bucket half way with water, walk over to your car/bike, add the dish soap, use the car wash mitt and get dirt off, go over a second time until perfect. Dump water, refill with clean water and wash out car mitt, carry it back, wash again to remove soap. Let it dry a minute. Use the super soft (and dry) fiber towel to spread wax on your vehicle.
That's 2 trips with water, but its manageable. $5 + tax and wax (I think the Turtle wax was $4 for possibly a lifetime of bicycle waxes). $10 isn't too bad, and that bike looked race ready in shiny mint condition!

This is totally true, I just painted my car and the hood paint was scratched after taking it to a car wash.
What about "no touch" automatic washes? All they do is high pressure wash with no brushes, no towels, etc.
they're better than the brush ones, but most of them still use the acid I mentioned in the video to clean the car, so they're not ideal either, hand washing yourself is always best

High pressure water is not always good for your paint..
All fine and dandy Scotty when you live in Texas. Here in the salt belt (Iowa) we can't wash our cars by hand when it's -20F and the car is covered with salt. Just sayin"
jdretiree I do know of some automatic touch free bays near me that do have a high pressure spray on the underside of the car to get salt off, but it is automated, least it's the high pressure touchless
I've done it with it being -3 outside, it's a pain in the ass sure, but it can be done. You just gotta be patient.
jdretiree i just take it to the manual pressure wash bays. They have pressure washer gives out hot water and gets rid of all the salt, snow and grime.
I had the misfortune of hand washing my car when it was below 0 degrees Celsius...as I was drying the car, the droplets were freezing, my neighbors thought I was crazy and I lost feeling in my fingers.
Speak for yourself! I go to the manual car wash and bring my own bucket and brush in the 5 F degrees in Michigan.
Done that plenty of times once a week and a daily rinse underbody to remove Winter salt.
I wash my car when its raining...works great. Just squirt some soap (Meguires) on the roof and work my way down with a clean cloth, then just walk away. Takes me about 10min.

When I was a teen I use to ride in the back of my friends pickup and we would go through the car wash. It was a lot of fun. Great way to cool off and get clean too.

I’ve taken my Yukon XL through the same car wash for nearly 20 yrs and the paint still looks great. I know a little about paint and car washes because I owned a detail shop. I still take the Yukon plus my two Caddy’s through the car wash and they look great. Most of what Scotty points out is factual to a certain degree, but the car wash technology is ever evolving and getting better.
Any recommendations? What kind of car wash is safe for paint?

An automatic car wash cost me 1700.00 for my 2017 Tahoe in paintwork. Your absolutely correct Scotty. No matter what car wash managers say, the equipment is not cleaned. Never again. Hard lesson I learned. Hand washes with proper wash products from now on 👍

I’ve lived in Houston so I understand the blowers might not work so well in the high humidity there. They work fine at places I’ve used in Albuquerque and California because the air is so much dryer.
I only use touchless when I use an automatic car wash, but even then one should be skeptical about the filtration of the reused water.
Hand wash is the only sure way to take the best care, but automatic does have occasional advantages, such as rinsing salt off the car up north in winter (as some viewers have already pointed out) or on seashores.
The one in my neighborhood just uses water jets to blast everything off and I find it works well both on my van and Hyannis Elantra. Very clean and the blowers do work.

Ok so I normally don't leave comments but I feel I can provide good input on this subject. First of all, I work for Circle K and we have a "Soft-Touch" car wash. A lot of people can't use a car wash right. They don't put their car in park when they go in, they just stop with their food on the brake. So if they're on the phone or something and they pick their foot up and jolts the car forward, it trips the wheel sensors and then the car wash goes out of service and they're mad that the car wash stopped in the middle of it. Secondly, because it's down a lot...A LOT, I asked one of the guys who works for the company who repairs it and asked if it's bad for the car to use automatic car washes. He said he washes his work van with it 4 times a day and it looked clean and didn't seem damaged in any way. I then asked if I bought a nice European car if I should run it though the wash (since we get them discounted) several times if it would hurt it at all. He basically told me there wouldn't be any problem. Now I guess if you're keeping a car for 20+ years it might have that type of affect, but honestly I don't know many people who keep a car more than about 5 to 10 years much less 12 or 15 for that matter. In short if you don't mind spending the money, it'll do a DECENT job. Won't be as good as if you hand washed it because lets face it, you'll probably be more inclined to do a more detailed job with it. If you need to get the poop off, go for it. Our most expensive wash is like $13. Not that much money if you only wash it once every couple months or more frequently in the winter.

We have brushless car washes that do amazing jobs. You only have to get out and dry off a few water spots. They're amazing for Canada in the winter.
Love your videos, but I have been taking my car through the same car wash about 3 times a week and looks show room new. And the car is 6 years old. As for your demo, two different cars with two different paint clear coats. One was on a semi level service with direct sunlight pounding on it and the other a semi vertical service with sun light reflecting off it.
Yeah, my car's paint is junk and it's covered in scratches and dents. I'll keep using automatic. If I ever get a nice car I'll hand wash it.

I'll vouch for that! Two months ago I paid about 330 USD to get my a4 polished. It took 3 days, but it looked great! A couple of days later, I took my car to an OMV automatic car wash. BIG MISTAKE! The brushes left lusterless traces on my car's doors. Incredibly, the shine gradually returned after a couple of hand washes. It served as a warning. No more automatic car washes for my baby!
I have a 17 year old Ford Torus station wagon. I live in the rust belt of Vermont. I'm blessed by having a local car wash that is brush-less. The paint job is beautiful, looks brand new. I try to get it washed once a week or between snow storms. I used to ski and drive on salted roads to the ski areas. I've had the rocker panels fixed twice ( very expensive - like $1500). Now that I don't ski the car seems to be holding up. Also, every 18 months I have the car rusted inhibited with mineral oil. It's the same stuff the Canadian army uses. It doesn't prevent rust but slows it down. Next time I get a car it will be a lease. More expensive than buying new but after 3 years I'll turn it it before I have to start dealing with rust.

100% agree. It's much better to just do it yourself. Not to mention the bug & tar that gets on your car, those eat up your paint just as bad if you don't take care of it.

Great advice, but hard to wash your car by hand during winter time (say after a snowstorm and there's salt on your car) in the Northeast and temperatures are in the teens. That's when the soft touch auto car washes come into play regarding my vehicles.

Actually any car washes. I recall some was professional did a car was vs paint damage test. "Best" results were from automatic car washing systems. Wors from fully manual that use towel dry due to the reasons you covered. And best still means micro damage to paint. But unless you are preparing to wash yourself properly all the time, or pay $150/wash good fully automated system is the best alternative.
There is an automatic car wash in Claremore, Ok that is brushless and works fantastic. Actually gets the car clean. Don't know if the chemicals it uses is bad for the paint or not.

My brand new Mazda3 got a deep scratch the entire length of the hood, diagonally, and across the A pillar, from one of those "hand wash" places where they run your car through an automatic wash and then hand dry with a filthy rag. The scratch hit the leading edge of the hood and coincided with a slice in the hood gasket. The only way this could have happened was a sharp wire on one of those brushes whipping the hood. I didn't see the damage until a couple weeks later. The car was brand new with under 2,000 miles on it. Since I had no proof, there wasn't much I could do about it other than rub it out with a rag and Scratch-X until it was mostly unnoticeable. Never again!
I've been running my car through the cheap $6 drive through for 10 years. I will never wash my car myself.
I half to point out, most of the time our cars are battling, rain ( love when you avoid a dirty puddle and Johnny fuckface SUV splashes your vehicle)

Paint fades away regardless, unless you wax it regularly. And the automatic car washes that I live near have a touch free setting, so no brushes are gonna be creating tiny scratches in the paint.

I tried a new touchless carwash in my town. Lots of different colored foams and tremendous amounts of water. Magically, it removed the wax without ever disturbing the dirt. Thanks, but no.
The last touchless I went through left me with a bunch of swirl designs where the chemicals were sprayed. Anywhere that wasn’t directly sprayed was just as dirty as before. I might try one again someday but it seems unlikely.
@@newengland8126 Lol that's such BS. The dirt is sitting ontop of the wax. It would be literally impossible to remove the wax (that's underneath the dirt) but not the dirt itself.
I am starting to notice that Scotty makes perfect sense but a lot of times his opinions don't apply to the real world.
I have pretty good experience with a brush car wash for a long time but since I wash my car so much it only has light dirt so I am thinking of going to touch free system because the last wash dislodged my rear panel. No damage but it made me nervous.

Hi Scotty, What do you think of touchless automatic car washes? They are the ones that just use a bunch of high pressure jets to do all the washing.
I've used one, and although it does still leave water spots, it seems to do a pretty good job considering it's a five minute stop on the way to work, whereas a hand wash is 30 minutes of my weekend [ahem] down the drain.

Around the same time this video was uploaded, I made the mistake of taking my car to our brand new local Quick Quack.
After we got out, the dark blue car looked more purple than anything, there were scratches all over, it was just a nightmare. We went to complain, and the best they he was, "Our brushes are brand new and made with neoprene." Never went back again.
Some automatic car washes use ammonium bifluoride, which finds its way into crevices between metal and rubber seals. Eventually rust will be found, typically in welding spots,as a result of galvanic corrosion.
