I found this same TV on the side of the road about 8 months ago and need to adjust the service menu settings with an apex remote. I have since then stored it away and never though much of it until you showed me. Thank you!

Had this very model growing up, nothing but great memories of spending hours playing Vice City for Xbox on that bad boy. Shame I had to leave it when I moved...

Way back in the day I got an Apex 1080i CRT HDTV. Got it open box and the sound didn't work but I used a Stereo for Sound anyway. It worked great and lasted a long time.

how the crap was i recommended a video about a TV I just picked up from a thrift store a few days ago? I don't even really look up stuff about TVs.
But yeah I was reasonably surprised about how alright it looked. I'm mostly using it for watching old 4:3 content from my PC, even wrote a pixel shader for mpv to adjust out some of the convergence issues, which really weren't that bad, but there was some noticeable. Unfortunately, there's some in the corners that just won't adjust out. It seems more like something about how the signal is being decoded or tube is being driven that's causing an odd color ghosting, rather than the tube itself. Could even be the cheap HDMI -> composite adapter. Either way, it's plenty decent for my needs.

I just found one of these in a trash pile on the side of the road today. It’s utterly filthy (definitely spent a long time outside in the elements) but much to my happy surprise it works nicely! I’ve got two quick questions for you:
1: can you share the model number of the remote unit?
2: do you know of any RGB modding guides for this model in particular?
    Thanks for a great video!

i agree, the APEX tvs aren't junk at all. the first tv i ever RGB modded was an APEX 27". the picture was amazing for such a cheap tv.

Haha I agree! I have a Apex CRT, has a surround system built-in amazing picture quality and I found it for free! I don't know how RGB works but the CRT also supports S-video :D

Isn´t it great to pretty much be the last generation to experience true vintage gaming on CRTs, I mean from here it will only become more and more rare to have a working picture tube display to use. I got a Grundig 28" tv which I bought when it was the last phat screen to ever buy in our country and I kept it since then, it is a bit like yours in the design and it has a sharp and vibrant picture except some off geometry. I got a few more old TVs and displays around but here it´s getting really rare to actually find them like at all. but I like to keep the CRT era going for as long as I can when it comes to real old gaming

It's such a shame these american tubes have to be modded for rgb. SCART's pretty much the bare minimum where I live, and it's a luxury to have other types of inputs.

I have a 27" Apex CRT with S-Video (Model #AT-2704S) and it looks phenomenal. The colors really pop. Unfortunately it has lately began a brightness flickering issue that I don't know how to diagnose or fix though.

Is there a way to change the size horizontally? I’m only seeing an option to change the h position.

    • @RetrofIex
      @RetrofIex ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is a typical limitation with sets 20” or smaller. If your horizontal sizing is insufficient, it may be something related to the B+ voltage. Nothing in the service manual is usually available for HSize in the 20” or smaller range

Hey, I have a question: I bought a similar Apex model recently but wasn't getting any audio from either video port coming from my smartphone's 3.5mm jack, or any of the channels' static. My question is should the TV be able to pick up the signal? Or is the headphone jack level too low? Does it also need a video signal to amplify the sound? Or is the audio potentially busted? I haven't been able to test any composite or line level inputs yet and won't be able to for a while. Any insight would be great.

My model had S-video and was 21". Not that I'm flexing😅but these did come with some nice fearures not all were "cheap". I think this was in 2002. 100 bucks from CC. It was a black Friday deal

I'm British and the 50Hz is only partially about PAL, it's because we run on 240v 50hz power, so things run slower, wouldn't say any was better than another as for TV 50hz is fine for TV and was 576i.... HOWEVER most TVs released here from year 2000+ supported NTSC 60hz... On the plus side year 2000+ had scart sockets which worked with RGB, alot supported RGB like cable/satellite, VHS and DVD. The DOWNSIDE with 50Hz was in the early gaming scene like Sega MegaDrive/Genesis some games ran SLOWER as a kid we didn't really notice as we didn't have anything to compare it with, no TH-cam etc, so when you play the games for a modern system like the MegaDrive collection for PS4 for example, it feels too fast.

I have a question.. I have taken this tv apart before to adjust the focus but does this tv have an actual H stat tuner on the tube neck for convergence adjustments? I am at work at the moment so i am not able to look right now. Just was curious before i take all the screws back out of the tv.

    • @P-0-Seventeen

no, the H stat thing's for sony. This just uses normal convergence methods to align everything up horizontally and vertically

    • @P-0-Seventeen

Not sure unless you had something in between that could split the audio connection to two sources, so you could run one to an audio receiver.

lol jk, because I like to see how these crt's differ in image quality to each other. Honestly Sony's are kind of overrated based on my experience with them and stuff like this Apex can be a good (( if not better )) alternative to one depending on your needs

@@P-0-Seventeen Honestly this Apex TV looks better than many of the Sonys I've had, I love them and the build quality of Sony TVs is the best period but image quality wise they can be hit or miss depending on the model and age and hours of use. They're clearly overrated and thus normally are sought after and can demand a high price while these TVs from random brands tend to be free or dirt cheap and people totally overlook them.
