    You would think conservation folk would be happy to see someone buying and renovating a property which has been empty for so long and falling to bits. They could be moreunderstanding and helpful. Beautiful restoration and the kitchen to die for.

      £5,000 profit. I suppose that location, location, location is key. A shame, its beautiful.

      Just terrible, all the stress and their funds being used to get so little money back. It is the location for sure.

    From watching this show I've learned that it's just the luck of the draw with these conservation boards. I've seen one thus far that was really keen to have the property restored as it keeps its original character with reasonable concessions and compromise, and the rest have all been like "nope, you can't take out the rotting beam, it's too meaningful to our heritage" and "no, you have to keep the giant industrial sized bread oven even if it literally takes up 40% of that entire building" and other ridiculous things.

      Yes, I find it curious too that ancient heritage buildings are allowed to crumble and no one gives a damn, but the instant someone wants to change/restore it, they get, "No! You mustn't harm our precious dwelling!" I guess they'd rather it rot to pieces than be altered.

      @CovidConQuitTheCensorship 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes. That woman was intent on saying no to everything, even though this couple were bending over backwards to not interfere with the integrity of the building. Obvious they would rather the building crumble to a ruin than have it restored. And the man who kept saying "We're not trying to be difficult". Yeah you are mate. That's exactly what you're doing. Really feel sorry for the developers

    Is it protecting our heritage if the building rots and falls down?

    Sweet that both the developer as well as Sarah are pregnant and come to think of it, both their kids will be about 17 years today. Tempi passati...

    Crazy couple. A pilot who's out of the country most of the time. A wife who's 6 months pregnant. And they decide "Hey, let's undertake a massive renovation of a huge Listed house".

  • @onlyme1373
    @onlyme1373 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Adding a sturdy wooden beam to stop the house falling down isn't preserving the character of the building apparently

    If I was a property developer I think I would avoid listed buildings like the plague. Even if you get a profit the extra cost of the development surely means that a similar investment in a new building would get you more profit.

    Paying builders by the week or by the hour is an incredibly naive and bad idea. They have great motivation to drag it out as long as possible. The end result is stunning. Too bad they may have done all that for little to no profit.

    I'm all for conservation and people not ripping the heart out of a beautiful old property but, when people are clearly treating the building with integrity, care and love - and looking to keep it as traditional as possible, there needs to be some give/take. Lets face it, without these investments, this gorgeous old farmhouse (and other houses) would go to rot and ruin. No wonder listed buildings fall into dilapidation. That said, I nearly bought a listed building where the chap had completely bodged it up with DIY and work that had not been in keeping with the building, nor its requirements, and he'd created a lot of damage. I sadly had to walk away from the purchase when the survey showed the extent the work needed, which was a direct result of his work, rather than the age or structure of the house in the first place!

    I don't understand people who are better educated than me, have more money than me and better opportunities than me...act like such idiots! Now don't get me wrong, they were a nice couple and they did a fantastic job on the house but considering he has a good, high-paying job (plus a Porsche!) why did they decide - while she was pregnant - to throw everything they had into such a monster development? I mean, they could have ended up in serious financial trouble if it had all gone tits up. Why didn't they take baby steps (before or after her pregnancy!) and started on a small project like a bog-standard terraced house in the Welsh Valley's somewhere, if only to learn about the real, practical problems of developing? That way, even if they made no profit, they wouldn't lose much and certainly not leave them with a massive debt they may never be able to repay, if you see what I mean? There are houses in Wales you can buy today, for 25K, updated and sell for 50k. Not much profit true, but little risk for people like them, with good incomes. Seemed pretty crazy to me to undertake such a risky project at that particular time...lovely house though.

    I realize that perhaps only old people have enough money for a house like that, but... why would some old couple even be thinking of buying a house that would easily house 8 or 10 people? If I was their age, I'd stay there and raise a house full of kids to fill all those bedrooms.

    Does anyone know if it ever sold and for how much.

  • @Tortise02

    They made a superb job of it...hope they sold it for a profit. But why take it on as a first project, with Dyson away, and Emma 6 months pregnant and in a full time job? How much would the house be worth now?!

    Sold for £765, so made 4k, but probably lost that in mortgage payments. What a complete waste of time, blood, sweat and tears. A first time developer should never ever try a project like this. My parents did it in the 70's and after two years and nearly a broken marriage later came out with 500 quid.

    Shocking to know how conservation rules work...if they r so interested in conserving then conserve all grade 2 yourselves. Someone is taking trouble to restore and the officers just come around dishing out their old fashioned rules...Sad, people of UK should fight this ridiculous rules
