  • Here's a full episode of To Tell the Truth from 1971 with a game one that I think fellow Northeasterners will appreciate. I know Carvel is a franchise that has its foothold in large parts of this country, but it's always going to be a Northeastern place for me considering that's where most of its actual sit down franchises are.
A panel of Larry Blyden, Peggy Cass, Bill Cullen, and Kitty Carlisle are tasked with finding the real Thomas Carvel, famed founder of Carvel ice cream. The panel is of course given ice cream and cake to enjoy (with Garry serving the ice cream, because he's of course down for anything). In the second game, actress Jennifer O'Neill is who the panel needs to identify, with her star just beginning to shine from the release of the movie Summer of '42.

I don’t understand how these NY celebrities didn’t recognize the unmistakable voice of Tom Carvel. He did the radio spots and voice-overs for Fudgy the Whale and Cookie Puss commercials!

Those commercials happened after this episode was aired.

Carvel previously appeared on an episode of What's My Line? with Wally Bruner a year earlier.

I suggest you fall down that rabbit hole, you'll be plenty surprised at what else you find ❤

Carvel was expensive--and not in Philly back then. The local joint we frequented had 4 cone sizes from 10 to 25 cents. We loved going out for soft custard in the summer.

If you've ever heard or seen the commercials, you'd know right away from his voice. Also, this ice cream was kosher.

I don't think he started doing commercials in 1971.

@@nextbarker2702 Now that you mention it, the commercials I've seen were from much later.
