  • Today we meet the prophet Elijah. But before that, it is important for you to know, if you don’t already, that at this point the people of God are separated into two kingdoms, the Northern Kingdom of Israel, and the Southern Kingdom of Judah. Each has its own kings, and the dates of the reigns of each are told us based on how many years the other king had been reigning. The Southern Kingdom proceeds down the lineage of David, while we see that the Northern Kingdom is plagued by constant overthrow due to the wickedness of their kings.
Elijah is raised up by the Lord to execute his justice upon the wicked King Ahab and his evil wife, Jezebel. His victory over the priests of Baal is then followed up by great depression, feeling as though he is the only one left to rightly serve the Lord. God gives him comfort, as he comforts us today.
The last two chapters of James recall the story of Elijah, whose powerful prayers were enough to affect the weather. We are likewise exhorted to use this power given us through prayer, but warned that it is only efficacious when done rightly. How do we pray rightly? Well, that’s a huge part of why we are reading through the scriptures. Let the Holy Spirit instruct you in these things as you dwell upon the Word.
