Absolutely amazing to watch...brilliant to see Kevin still going strong and fishing...for those of us who have followed Kevin's career in awe....this is an important historical record. Thanks to Guru and Matt for filming this
Perfectly said
Thanks a lot Jason, really appreciate this!
My all time hero. The GOAT.
Kevin Ashurst, absolute legend 😍🎣
Like yourself sir!
Brilliant to see and hear Big Kevin again Brought back so many memories Thanks for this special Podcast
Thank you Clive!
Clive Branson. Another legend! Love your video diaries too👍
After reading his books as a teenager (and I still read them now) Have been waiting 40 years for this. Thankyou to Matt and Guru for nearly 4 hours of absolute class, thank goodness someone has finally done an interview with Kevin to show what a true legend and class person he is. Just wonderful.....I just want to watch it again. Made my day...
Best one yet, what a man.could listen to him for hour's.
I'm sure we could have filmed for even longer, so many stories!
There will never be another Kevin. First class podcast. Thanks Matt.
Iam 62 and let's say I have "Watched alot of TV programmes" In that time.I can honestly say this is the best "TV programme" I have ever watched bar none.
In the late 70s I was lucky to be taken under the wing of the great Bradford and England angler John Illingworth who was friends with Kevin so knew him a little and got to sit behind him a few times. He was a really nice guy and nothing was too much trouble to help an up and coming kid.
I want to sincerely thank Tackle Guru and Matt for this podcast to listen go my hero for 3 hours + was fantastic.... thanks guys!
Those were 2 proper anglers to help you on your way Richard
There's great fishermen and then there's the likes of Kevin.
Legend in his own lifetime.
Great watch.
A true legened!
i have never smiled so much in my life watching a fishing video.........without seeing a fish!!. Benny and Kevin inspired me so much in my formative years of canal and river fishing. i adore kevin. fantastic podcast, probably will go down as the best that Guru will ever do :-) Thanks Matt and the team.
I've watched all 48 podcasts, and there's been good podcasts, great podcasts, and then the Kevin Ashurst podcast, which, for me, tops the lot. Great guest and great presenter. Well done, Matt Godfrey, for getting the best out of the guests 👏
What a fantastic watch. I could have listened to Kevin talk all day. I remember him always being in the Anglers Mail and Angling times when I started fishing. Legend!
I'm so glad that you got Kevin onto the Podcast. Such an understated, modest man who inspired me to fish and fish matches in my youth. Beating 1200 anglers in one match is just crazy!! He has a fantastic memory and these memories are truly the essence of match fishing that needs capturing. What a fantastic podcast, my absolute favourite so far. Brilliant
I must have missed this bit; which match did Kevin win that was 1200 anglers?
Thank you, it was an honor having him on!
@@MarkWintleFishing It was the Evening Chronicle on the Bridgewater Canal
Best fishing Podcast on the whole of TH-cam !! .. Absolute legend and you nailed it Matt...
Made my day, year, life !
Thank you Kevin and the team for all the great memories. :)
I went for two weeks travelling Ireland with my two grandsons, ages 8 and 11, in our motorhome. We did the South and then travelled up to Lough Erne. My mate, who lives in Enniskillen took us down to the Erne and showed us where to fish. He said, "Have you any maggots?" I said no, I will get my mate to fetch you some. So his mate showed up with the maggots. It was Kevin Ashurst. They both stayed with my grandsons, showing them how to fish. Thanks, Kev.
What a story Ray!
Best 4hrs of screen time I've ever spent.
What a privelidge to watch.
Thank you Mike
That has to be the best angling podcast ever, Kevin is a true legend, thanks Matt and team, loved it.
Matt without doubt this is your best ever Podcast with the best angler this country has ever produced, met Kevin years ago at the NEC show when he still fished for England and he chatted to everyone as an equal nothing flash about him. At 85 his memory is unbelievable like a human encyclopedia and says it as it is. Brilliant, Thanks Matt , your production team and Guru for filming it.
Legend is an overused word, but not in this man's case! Straight as a dye, you get what you see with him. Also a great angler. Good god, the man can remember the pegs he drew in loads of matches and the weights he got,. I'm 64 and sometimes struggle to remember what I had for breakfast🤣...Kevin is 21 years older than me. What a man.❤❤
Incredible person, and what a memory he has!
Simply the very best angler has given us the very best podcast GOAT ❤️
Known Kevin all my angling life, great podcast, he is without question the greatest natural angler to walk the bank, brilliant 👍🎣👍
The best podcast I’ve listened to full of detail and nostalgia absolutely brilliant.
What a memory, you’ve got to love what you do and be totally immersed in it to carry those memories, brilliant watch.
Truly amazing and great to listen to hopefully people can learn from this about humbleness as well as how to approach life in general. As a 12 - 15 year old I used to fish and was taught how to fish with Benny, Kevin, Baz and Vinnie on the Bridgewater Canal at Beech Road Stockton Heath Warrington, the fishing wasn't that good as salt had come in from the Trent and Mersey Canal but they developed the loaded drinking straw floats which they could cast between the over hanging branches and catch roach that no one else ever caught. Although my Mam set on the road to fishing it was their guidance which set me up to go match fishing thanks to them I am now 68 and still fishing although not matches as I have lived in Kent for the last 17 years and there are only commercials no natural venues. Thank you Guru and Matt.
Absolutely fantastic, greatest angler ever, was my absolute hero as a kid, couldn’t stop watching this 👍
A real legend from the good old days. A great podcast. Well done Matt Godfrey.
Not blowing smoke up your arse but that was fantastic, best podcast yet. Absolute legend and he had me genuinely laughing out loud which doesn’t happen very often. And yes please to getting Steve Gardener on, read his book which was brilliant.
I shall try my very best to get Steve on!
Couldnt agree more , music to my ears . Wonderfull
Thanks for making this, it's amazing to hear Kevin's story in his own words, an absolute legend from the golden era of match fishing.
Coincidently I have just finished reading his book on World Class Match Fishing, highly recommended if you can find a copy.
Brilliant. Keep up the good work Matt. You are flying the flag for our generation.
Kevins peg in that Scottish Open was on the Kelvinhead "wides" section of the canal. Exactly where I fished my first match as a 12 year old. Now on my second watch of this podcast. Absolutely brilliant!!
What a gentleman, absolutely loved every minute of it.
Kevin.Ivan.Ray Mumford.all my heroes. Like Kevin I am now 87 , worked 12 hr shifts,.never had time for big matches but won many Club matches , all put down to reading their tactics all those years ago ..Thank you lads 👍👍
AMAZING the only word and of course when the great man is mentioning cost within angling I hope it strikes a note. It's not about the money you know it's about fishing. That was an AMAZING podcast THANK YOU so much.
Absolutely amazing , have never met Kevin but always known what a legend he is and fished in a few matches that he’s been in ,, youv certainly set the bar very high now for future podcasts, that’s going to take some beating , Brilliant 👍😃
What an absolutely fantastic Podcast, with one of the true legends of our sport.
Wow! That was something very special, a proper bloke is Big Kev, everyone holds him in such high regard. After listening to that, I now understand why.
He has so much respect and deserves it too Steve.
Absolutely loved this watch, superb podcast matt, fished an odd match some years ago now on the weaver and im sure kevin won one of them from the marina stretch with 6lb or so , all gudgeon 🎣. Absolute legend, the best of the best. 👏👏👏
Absolutely awesome pod cast Kevin was a childhood hero of mine. My first decent pole was a Sundridge red Kevin Ashurst 11m. My biggest headline in AT was when I forgot my Daiwa pole holdall for a winter league, but a team mate lent me a green Sundridge Kevin Ashurst pole & won the round. He is truly inspiring.
Absolutely loved watching and listening to 'Big Kev'. What a legend !! Along with Ivan Marks, the two of them are for me, joint GOAT's in match fishing. Thanks to Matt and the Guru team for a fantastic podcast. 🎣💪👍👏
First England angler to get more than one top three finish in World Champs; won in '82, second in '87, '90 and '91. Very unlucky not to win in '87, beaten by Welsh wizard, Clive Branson by 10g, due arguably to Kevin's fish being drier than Clive's ? That was another great story in the podcast.
Nothing short of brilliant .. I used to look up to Big Kev as a wee lad and I’m now 63yo. This podcast will probably stand head and shoulders above anything else you’re likely to do. I’d still love to see Denis White (Fatha) though. That would be another classic. Thanks very much to Guru for a fabulous few hours. 🎣🎣
Totally agree, and same here (66yrs old). It would be great to see both 'Fatha' and John Allerton, who are both still going strong on the Yorkshire circuit.
Not only an amazing angler but a truly amazing bloke .had the pleasure of meeting him through my dad & northern Anglers when I was a kid
A great guy!
No competition, Britain's finest angler. Lovely to hear Big Kev.
While theres some amazing talent coming thru im sure most would love to listen to more of the older generation ...an amazing podcast guru keep them coming 👏
What a memory that man has , thoroughly enjoyed that.
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant, Sir Kevin Hashurst if not should be, memory, recall, stunning, could have been anything, in any thing in the world with abilities of memory like he has. 85 years old, still Winning, what a inspirational for me, l ama 78years x club angler . Thanks Sir K H ,Well done Mat Brilliant. MANZY.
Amazing listening to that voice , his vision , sayings and expressions were the ones I first heard when I was about 10 in the Leigh ospreys junior section. Be still valid today Our fishing hero inspirational. Such a positive influence on my angling journey . Bought the hairs up on my arms ❤
He's as switched-on as ever, a special guy for sure.
@@TackleguruTVwe didn’t know how lucky we were at the time , I spent my childhood on that canal , when it’s was rock hard when anything from 2-5lb would win it in the early 80s when Kevin brought the poles to the forefront . He taught us to tie hooks make floats and the mentality of fishing hemp and caster and the patience of both preparing the best of both and accurate feeding in both amounts and where to fish it …. So valuable
Incidentally that featureless cut at the time is now a nature reserve and practical aquarium …. The worst canal in the country they call it now😂😂😂
One the best anglers ever for sure. Salt of the earth...
A great!
I'm 72 now so grew up reading about Benny and Kevins exploits.Got to fish a few pegs from him on the Witham and spent 4 hours watching him fish the waggler. He was a Rolls Royce, different gravy.Loved this interview, thanks for the memories big man.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
First met Kevin 5 years ago in Beltubet where it was his 80th birthday and before the draw everyone was singing to him, that was a great week. i drew next to him one day and helped him with his tackle, what a great experience to meet the very best in coarse fishing and just carry his gear. I’m half his age and he forgets nothing, We had a lovely chat about bloodworms and NW winter league fishing here from years ago. Absolute legend in our sport.
What a guest and what an episode, thanks for another brilliant podcast, long may it continue!
We'll keep trying!
Wow what a privelage truly memorable thank you so much, what a guy what a legend.
Another brilliant podcast, what a legend Kevin is, i only met him once when I was a kid. he and ivan were sat chatting on a ferry, heading to Ireland, top blokes.
Absolutely amazing podcast best yet what a legend 👍👍
What a Man, What an Angler and What a legend !!!! Amazing Podcast !!!
Thank you Kevin, you were my hero when I was young, even though I was the other end of the country, you deserved all you got
As a fellow Kevin My ultimate hero was the one and only Kevin Ashurst, even if He is from wrong side ut till.pure class.
A true legend Kevin.
Sat behind him as a kid, then went and sat behind Ivan Marks in the same match.I Didn't really know at the time how great they both were! My old man was in the same match and told me to go and sit behind them and learn something! Great memory!
Just finished watching this I don't know where to start brilliant watch well done for putting it together, Kevin what a genuine bloke very humble very modest and straight talking also think my grandfather fished with Kevin in the national team for stoke ac on the Severn 💙👍
Brilliant. Had the pleasure of watching Kevin and his dad Benny fishing Castle Lake in Cavan in the 80s. I was just a kid and Kevin never gave out to me! He was bagging up on bream in a swim I knew well. I was shocked how good he was.
Certainly a special talent.
Thanks Matt for a Brilliant Podcast, it Brought back so many memories Im 75 now so i remember the whicker basket days very well, I was once ask to set off the maroon in NELSONS FIELD after digging the hole i realised it was behind your dad so ran across the field and dug another hole. HAPPY DAYS
superb.. bit of an enigma for me was big KEV.. he was right in his prime when i was at my own modest peak of club/match angling.. he was always in the Angling times .. i loved the story of him just snapping the peacock waggler at the length needed..tippexing and colouring the tip.. and making an extra pole length from aluminium.. it sounded more mysterious oop north compared to kent where i was struggling on terrible venues.. Kevin and his like seem to have a talent for 'silver fish whispering' if you like... this vid was really interesting for me.. well done
In the early/mid 70s Ivan and Kevin were the two anglers' columns to read every week in the Angling Times/Anglers Mail respectively. Their match fishing books were bibles to me, and I was able to watch both fish on various venues over the years, the memeorable occasions being the 1977 Galdding and the 82 National. It's brilliant you've done this podcast and I'm astonished at Kevin's memory. I had hoped to get Kevin's views on Ivan when I did Ivan's biography a decade ago but I never did catch up with him.
Thanks a lot Mark!
Love this man had plenty of good times when I've drawn next to him in Ireland to many memories to write down hear
Great to see and hear Kevin on your podcast. One of the greatest anglers ever. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great podcast, and two brilliant guest, a pleasure to watch and listen.
Brilliant to listen to his stories I can remember reading about the matches he’s talking about in angling times when I was a kid great memories brilliant pod
Big Kev, what a fantastic video, I once sat behind him on the Leeds Liverpool canal, such a lovely bloke, an honour to have spent a few hours with him
Absolutely superb, the best fishing podcast I’ve seen. Well done 👏
This is the best pod cast yet well done Matt and Kev

Mega, glad this means something to you Kenneth.
A great angler and a great man ❤🎣 I remember Kevin and Ian Heaps walking past my peg on a Lancaster canal match in the 1970s. I was in awe 😎🎣(Great podcast - well done Matt n Toby.)
An amazing interview
Felt I was in the room with you
Credit to everyone involved
So enjoyable
Best podcast yet Matt , big Kev , seen it all , won it all … legend
Thanks David!
An amazing block and angler …my 1st memory of Kevin goes back to fishing the Bridgewater water canal at Thelwall catching Bream….fast forward 50+ years I fish on the River Mersey with Kevin and he’s still winning…..thanks Matt and Rod 👍
You're welcome Ian, glad you enjoyed it!
Grew up as a teen in the 70s reading in the times and anglers mail about Kevin and Ivan fishing and winning matches on the big rivers and Stillwater's. They inspired us to fish and enter matches as we got older , great memories, try to get more anglers on Matt from Kevin's era .🐟🎣
Wow brilliant watch .. legend ! Remember Kevin Ashurst Shakespeare float rods … happy days xxx
Fantastic rods!
Absolutely brilliant podcast Matt , loved every minute , legend of a man Kevin Ashurst , my claim to fame fishing two pegs from him once on the Bridgey . And no i didn't beat him 😂
The best, angler in the world forme, great interview best 4 hour video I’ve ever seen
I can remember sat behind Big Kevin on Bridgewater canal watching him fish he was/is a magician with a waggler..i was awe struck ..brilliant Angler!!

Could listen more and more from Kevin - truly brilliant, oh and fantastic host in Matt Godfrey
Kevin has been a great positive influence to my fishing career. I'm blown away with listening to his mesmerising stories. Wonderful!
I can remember our club coach trip to Kevins fishery.. "Pilsworth" when I was about 10yr old. I got food poisoning stirring my cup of tea with maggot flavoured fingers. Yuk!
Hope you've recovered now Ian! 😂 Great memories.
Great guy and great angler first met Kevin on the north west winter league in the 70s I think it was 10 teams of 33 top 12 results counted,I’ve still got a 12ft Kevin Ashurst rod I would like to wish him all the best in the future
Absolutely brilliant podcast guys. That'll be getting quite a few more watches for sure!!
First met Big Kev back in the 60s when I drew peg 93 on Newark Dyke. 100 quid winner take all. I'd never seen a stick float or casters before. I had Big Kev on 91 I think and Benny two pegs further away and a guy called Groom ( I think ) on 94.. Someone offered me two quid for my peg at the draw and I stupidly did not take it otherwise I would have watched and learnt summat rather than fish the match and caught and learnt nowt !! A brilliant angler who could catch fish that were not there as far as i could see. God to see you are still around.
I'm lucky enough to fish the mersey in Warrington most weekends with kev , absolute legend and gentleman 👏, superb blog
Cud listen to another 4 hours of Kevin’s story’s
Best yet Matt and the team 👍👍👍
Brilliant, just brilliant.
Probably the best YT Video/Podcast I've ever watched. Been next to Kev a couple of times, such a nice man, very humble. Looking forward to the Rod Scott/Gary Whalley one as well, should be a laugh 🙂
We might have to make that one 'after hours!'
Big Kev being on is the gift
What a brilliant place podcast matt was great listening to him and all the matches he had won and some of the anglers he mentioned even Kenny kendal from Leeds met him a few times was usually a with Stan Haigh & dave Thomas another good viewing

I shall try my best to keep them coming David!
One word....epic!
Brilliant he was my absolute hero back in the day . He booked onto a match I was meant to fish so I just sat behind him for 5hrs and watched a masterclass off long pole in high wind. .would off been about 1991
What an experience that must have been Geoff
@@TackleguruTV he wons the match by about 4lb i think . skiimers on bloodworm
Best yet matt well done presented it perfect
Amazing, I can’t wait!
